Under Guard: A Case Study Of The S.S. Black Point And U-853 For The Production Of More Comprehensive War Memorials And Public Exhibits, Rebecca Sobus

Open Access Master's Theses

The following project addresses how the preservation of memory is affected when memorials and public exhibits develop within a dispersed material cultural landscape. To address this problem, the Battle of Point Judith in May 1945 is used a case study. The Battle of Point Judith and its associated wrecks, the German U-853 and the American SS Black Point, display the positives and negatives of memorialization and public exhibition for historical artifacts across a decentralized material cultural landscape. After analyzing the characteristics of memorials, museums, and memorial-museums through additional examples like Auschwitz-Birkenau and Hiroshima, it may be seen that the Battle …

High School Teachers' Perceptions And Application Of Robert Stahl's Decision-Making Materials In The Social Studies Classroom, Alisha Milam Jan 2022

High School Teachers' Perceptions And Application Of Robert Stahl's Decision-Making Materials In The Social Studies Classroom, Alisha Milam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study investigated high school social studies teachers’ perceptions of Robert Stahl’s decision-making materials within their content area and the relevance of curricular implementation. The primary questions addressed in this study focused on high school social studies teachers’ perception of current instructional practices, inquiry-based learning, state standards, and national frameworks regarding content and classroom instruction. The participants included seven rural high school social studies teachers selected through two-stage random sampling. Participant selection was reduced to rural areas due to the overwhelmingly disproportionate number of rural districts in the state of study. However, to gain a diverse perspective from across the …

The Morphogenisis And Analysis Of Porcine Femoral Head Mammillary Processes. A Computational Study Of The Structural Mechanisims Of Biomechanical Stability, Ronald Vincent Perrone Jr. Jan 2022

The Morphogenisis And Analysis Of Porcine Femoral Head Mammillary Processes. A Computational Study Of The Structural Mechanisims Of Biomechanical Stability, Ronald Vincent Perrone Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The capital femoral physis is a growth plate located between the head of the femur and the femoral neck and forms a temporary joint where growth cartilage differentiates into bone by endochondral ossification during development. A slip occurs when a shear stress across the physis overcomes the mechanical integrity of the bone-cartilage-bone interface, known as slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Though this disorder is widely studied the etiology is not completely understood. Joint morphology may play a critical role in stability, until the joint closes in early adulthood. During development morphological changes in the joint emerge and provide natural mechanical mechanisms …

State Takeover Of Schools And School Districts: An Examination Of The Roles Of Race, Racism, And Care In Takeover Policy, Aaren Nichole Cassidy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This research is situated at the nexus of race, racism, and care in education law, policy, and practice. State takeovers of schools and school districts in the United States have been rising for over thirty years, significantly increasing in the past decade. These takeovers raise questions of equity, accountability, integrity, and capability in many areas, specifically in terms of educating the nation's youth living in urban settings. State-led reconstitutions of schools and school districts have been and continue to be linked to racialized policy agendas, most notably those that seek to disenfranchise, dispossess, and confine Black and Brown students, families, …

Imagining Identity Beyond The Fishbowl: A Framework For Using Ethnographic Texts For Children To Cultivate A Place Of Inclusion And Belonging, Jacklyn Boggs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Bibliotherapy—the use of the literary arts for the purpose of healing—has been used by numerous professionals for a variety of reasons. Psychologists, social workers, educators, and health care professionals have specifically utilized works in the children’s genre as a tool for promoting dialogue with children around difficult topics, such as loss, trauma, oppression, self-abhorrence, and suffering. Children’s books can serve as vehicles for facilitating conversations and safe spaces of inclusion that invite them to explore the complexity of their identities and lives. Of course, not all texts are created equal, and thus this project aims to serve as a framework …

Canyon Or Crevasse? The Gender Pay Gap In Nursing, Stanley Carlton Wilkins Jan 2022

Canyon Or Crevasse? The Gender Pay Gap In Nursing, Stanley Carlton Wilkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Despite good progress toward gender equality in recent decades, women continue to lag significantly behind men in wages and compensation at workplaces. This study examines the gender pay gap in the nursing profession – one traditionally female dominated field. By analyzing the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) data, I conduct cross-tabulation and multivariate linear regression analyses to test two core hypotheses: (1) men are more likely to work in the nursing fields with higher pay; and (2) male nurses tend to have higher wages than female nurses. I find that female nurses predominate in the fields with lower pay, such …

Policymaker Discourse In Colorado Public Higher Education Appropriations, Nathan Willers Jan 2022

Policymaker Discourse In Colorado Public Higher Education Appropriations, Nathan Willers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

State funding for higher education is one of the most pressing issues facing both institutions and policymakers in 2022. Colorado has seen significant declines in the amount of state funding per student over the past two decades, resulting in increases in student burdens for tuition. Policy discourse analysis through a poststructural and neoliberal lens provided insight towards the legislative process and the discursive themes utilized by Colorado policymakers during the 2021-22 legislative budgeting cycle. Twelve artifacts were analyzed, including a mix of policy briefs, hearings, and budget and appropriations reports, for discursive data related to the state’s appropriations for public …

A Media Archaeology Of Technologies Of Enchantment, Jane Hutchinson Jan 2022

A Media Archaeology Of Technologies Of Enchantment, Jane Hutchinson

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis explores how an understanding of an immaterial dimension of human experience was expressed and experienced in the context of nineteenth century engagement with science and technology. Drawing upon methods of media archaeology, it presents examples of visual technologies where apparatus and images representative of scientific and technological objectivity appear to have been appropriated and modified for the purpose of experiencing this dimension, an experience this thesis calls enchantment. The thesis suggests that some period specific behaviours associated with these visual technologies are sophisticated and subtle mechanisms that contribute to the affective and cognitive experience of enchantment. The flickering …

Unstacking The Matryoshka Nesting Doll: A Self-Study Of Playful Language Instruction For Adult Second Language Learners, Marine Pepanyan Jan 2022

Unstacking The Matryoshka Nesting Doll: A Self-Study Of Playful Language Instruction For Adult Second Language Learners, Marine Pepanyan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the recent three decades teaching second language (L2) vocabulary has expanded from sentence-level morphosyntactic features and pragmatics to the promotion and advancement of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Nevertheless, the L2 instructors are constantly seeking alternative strategies for vocabulary teaching and assessment due to a superficial level of vocabulary memorization and lack of student engagement. As an instructor-practitioner, I undertook a self-study of the process of implementing Playful Language Instruction (PLI) of L2 vocabulary in an Intensive English Program. In this self-study I combined conceptual lenses of theories of play, CLT, and the Adult Learning Theory to examine how playful …

Then the method section describes the methods of journaling and scripting writing, and then …

Advancing Feminist Innovation In Sport Studies: A Transdisciplinary Dialogue On Gender, Health And Wellbeing, Holly Thorpe, Sheree Bekker, Simone Fullagar, Nonhlanhla Mkumbuzi, Sophia Nimphius, Madeleine Pape, Stacy T. Sims, A. Travers Jan 2022

Advancing Feminist Innovation In Sport Studies: A Transdisciplinary Dialogue On Gender, Health And Wellbeing, Holly Thorpe, Sheree Bekker, Simone Fullagar, Nonhlanhla Mkumbuzi, Sophia Nimphius, Madeleine Pape, Stacy T. Sims, A. Travers

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Athlete health and wellbeing requires a holistic, multidimensional approach to understanding, supporting, and treating individual athletes. Building more supportive, inclusive, and equitable environments for the health and wellbeing of women and gender expansive people further requires gender-responsive approaches that promote broader cultural change. Feminist sport and exercise medicine practitioners, sports scientists, and social science researchers are increasingly coming together in their efforts to do this work. However, working across disciplines inevitably includes an array of ontological, epistemological, and political challenges. In this paper, we offer a curated ‘dialogue’ with a group of feminist scholars engaged in research and practice across …

"Blood, Sweat, Tears:" A Muslim Woman Law Professor's View On Degenerative Racism, Misogyny, And (Internal) Islamophobia From Preeclampsia And Presumed Incompetent To Pandemic Tenure, Nadia B. Ahmad Jan 2022

"Blood, Sweat, Tears:" A Muslim Woman Law Professor's View On Degenerative Racism, Misogyny, And (Internal) Islamophobia From Preeclampsia And Presumed Incompetent To Pandemic Tenure, Nadia B. Ahmad

FIU Law Review

From classical literature, popular press, law, everyday conversations, and social media rampages, society scrutinizes visible Muslim women even though they are a part of a vast global population. From E.M. Forrester’s A Passage to India—the Orientalist summer reading I endured in high school—to the incessant online attacks on U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, the hatred has no end and no bounds. Visible Muslim women are accustomed to erasure and censure for simply existing. In France, legislators sought to expel visible Muslim women under the age of eighteen from the public space. Women’s rights have been used as a pretext to invade …

Crisis, Rupture And Structural Change: Re-Imagining Global Learning And Engagement While Staying In Place During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shruti Rana, Hamid R. Ekbia

FIU Law Review

The COVID-19 pandemic led to unprecedented closures of national borders and the withdrawal of much of the social and cultural activities of society into the walls of the home. For us, educators focused on global engagement and analyzing international law and society, the abrupt retreat into the shelter of domestic walls disrupted the very subjects we were studying—inside and outside the classroom. In the pandemic’s first wave, most study abroad and international experiential programs were cancelled indefinitely, and the programs that continued had to operate in an environment of social distancing and uncertainty. We were forced to scramble to accommodate …

Homography Of Inventorship: Dabus And Valuing Inventors, Jordana Goodman Jan 2022

Homography Of Inventorship: Dabus And Valuing Inventors, Jordana Goodman

Faculty Scholarship

On July 28, 2021, the Device for the Autonomous Bootstrapping of Unified Sentience ("DAB US") became the first computer to be recognized as a patent inventor. Due to the advocacy of DAB US's inventor, Dr. Stephen Thaler, the world's definition of "inventor" has finally fractured - dividing patent regimes between recognition of machine inventorship and lack thereof This division has sparked many scholarly conversations about inventorship contribution, but none have discussed the implications of a homographic inventorship.

This Article addresses the implications of international homographic inventorship - where countries have different notions and rules concerning patent inventorship - and the …

Performing Kayepa Dordok Living Waters In Noongar Boodjar, South-Western Australia, Clint Bracknell, Pierre Horwitz, Trevor Ryan, Jonathan W. Marshall

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Performance through language, song and dance provides alternative knowledges and ways of understanding, in this case, developing deeper relationships with living water. Drawing on Indigenous Noongar culture from south-western Australia, this paper addresses the question: How can relationships between living underground, estuarine and riverine water bodies (kayepa dordok) be performed? Two new interlinked Noongar works in response to local riverscapes were developed for, and performed as part of, the 2021 Perth Festival. The first was to embody the return journey of the bullshark, from the salt water to the riverine fresh water; the second was to enact the …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study compares the efficacy of computer and human analytics in a commemorative setting. Both deductive and inductive reasoning are compared using the same data across both methods. The data comprises 2490 non-repeated, non-dialogical social media comments from the popular touristic site Tripadvisor. Included in the analysis is participant observation at two Anzac commemorative sites, one in Western Australia and one in Northern France. The data is then processed using both Leximancer V4.51 and Dialectic Thematic Analysis. The findings demonstrate artificial intelligence (AI) was incapable of insight beyond metric-driven content analysis. While fully deduced by human analysis the metamodel was …

Voicing Derbarl Yerrigan As A Feminist Anti-Colonial Methodology, Vanessa Wintoneak, Mindy Blaise Jan 2022

Voicing Derbarl Yerrigan As A Feminist Anti-Colonial Methodology, Vanessa Wintoneak, Mindy Blaise

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The paper voices Derbarl Yerrigan, a significant river in Western Australia, through three imperfect, non-innocent, and necessary river-child stories. These stories highlight the emergence of a feminist anti-colonial methodology that is attentive to settler response-abilities to Derbarl Yerrigan through situated, relational, active, and generative research methods. Voicing Derbarl Yerrigan influences the methodological practices used as part of an ongoing river-child walking inquiry that is concerned with generating climate change pedagogies in response to the global climate crises and calls for new ways of thinking and producing knowledge. In particular, the authors found that voicing as a methodology includes listening and …

It Takes A Village: Tribalism As A Premise To Understand Societal Responsibility And Impact Of Mass Violence, Paige D. Schultz Jan 2022

It Takes A Village: Tribalism As A Premise To Understand Societal Responsibility And Impact Of Mass Violence, Paige D. Schultz

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

What is a mass shooter? This is difficult to answer as there is no single definition. The definition of a mass shooter depends on contextual factors including victim count, setting, and motivation (Gramlich, 2019). The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines active shooters as “one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area” (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2021, page 1). While other definitions are used to identify a mass shooter, given the breadth of study in this area by the FBI, this paper will use the FBI definition.

Psilocybin And The Psychologist: A Proposed Methodology For Exploring The Effects Of Clinicians’ Psychedelic Experiences On Their Clinical Practice, Brian N. Iliescu Jan 2022

Psilocybin And The Psychologist: A Proposed Methodology For Exploring The Effects Of Clinicians’ Psychedelic Experiences On Their Clinical Practice, Brian N. Iliescu

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

This paper proposes a phenomenological exploration of the perceived influence of psychedelic experiences on clinical psychologists’ practice of psychotherapy. The goal of the proposed study is to open-endingly explore the psychedelic experiences of psychologists to identify common themes, underlying phenomena, and the impact that those experiences may have on their individual practice of psychotherapy. At present, no published studies have explored or identified how the perceived long-term effects of psychedelics influence professional mindsets and practices. This paper aims to synthesize the current literature, identify a gap, provide rationale for future queries into the non-clinical uses and effects of psychedelic medicines, …

Spanish-Speaking Caregivers’ Use Of Referential Labels With Toddlers Is A Better Predictor Of Later Vocabulary Than Their Use Of Referential Gestures, Janet Y. Bang, Manuel Bohn, Joel Ramírez, Virginia A. Marchman, Anne Fernald Jan 2022

Marchman, Anne Fernald

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Variation in how frequently caregivers engage with their children is associated with variation in children's later language outcomes. One explanation for this link is that caregivers use both verbal behaviors, such as labels, and non-verbal behaviors, such as gestures, to help children establish reference to objects or events in the world. However, few studies have directly explored whether language outcomes are more strongly associated with referential behaviors that are expressed verbally, such as labels, or non-verbally, such as gestures, or whether both are equally predictive. Here, we observed caregivers from 42 Spanish-speaking families in the US engage with their 18-month-old …

"For Better Or Worse": Imagining Innovation In Smart City Municipal Design, Kevin M. Kochever Jan 2022

"For Better Or Worse": Imagining Innovation In Smart City Municipal Design, Kevin M. Kochever

Master's Theses

The smart city concept recently (ca. 2010) emerged as a corporate-led system-as-a-service (SaaS) tool to meet city needs of accessibility and efficiency. I looked at three Western cities—Reykjavík, San José, and Toronto—to discover what it meant for city managers to meet municipal needs by embracing smart initiatives. Senior-level city managers, consultants, and technologists invoked vocabularies of smartness and innovation, adopting Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) as tools to facilitate human resource and service efficiency needs. I found persistent ambiguity in how city managers described and measured outcomes for city smartness. I also found stakeholders used smartness to …

“Cancel Culture” And Criminal Justice, Steven Arrigg Koh Jan 2022

“Cancel Culture” And Criminal Justice, Steven Arrigg Koh

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores the relationship between two normative systems in modern society: “cancel culture” and criminal justice. It argues that cancel culture—a ubiquitous phenomenon in contemporary life—may rectify deficiencies of over- and under-enforcement in the U.S. criminal justice system. However, the downsides of cancel culture’s structure—imprecise factfinding, potentially disproportionate sanctions leading to collateral consequences, a “thin” conception of the wrongdoer as beyond rehabilitation, and a broader cultural anxiety that “chills” certain human conduct—reflect problematic U.S. punitive impulses that characterize our era of mass incarceration. This Article thus argues that social media reform proposals obscure a deeper necessity: transcendence of blame …
