A Win-Win: Utilizing Human Services Students To Run A Campus Food Pantry, Carly L. Redding, Michallene G. Mcdaniel, Dominique Allen Feb 2022

A Win-Win: Utilizing Human Services Students To Run A Campus Food Pantry, Carly L. Redding, Michallene G. Mcdaniel, Dominique Allen

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Abstract

Recent studies have examined the growing problem of food insecurity among college students in the United States. In recent reports, as many as 30% of all college students are food insecure (CUFBA, 2020). It is imperative that college campuses address this issue, as many students are forced to leave college without completion in order to address financial concerns (Johnson, 2009). Over the last decade, campus-based food pantries have emerged as one means of addressing growing food insecurity among students. However, colleges and universities are facing budget cutbacks and other funding restrictions, creating greater challenges for meeting the needs of …

Men At Peace: A Creative Ethnography, Henriette Blecher Feb 2022

Men At Peace: A Creative Ethnography, Henriette Blecher

Postgraduate

Men at Peace is a creative ethnography aiming to facilitate a functional bridge between polarising gender assumptions around communication and to communicate this bridge using poetry. Using an ethnographic approach underpinned by feminist gender theories, this project is a study of masculinities in contemporary Australian society. Stories of men’s experiences were gathered and then transformed into randomised five-lined cut up poems to reveal and understand social, emotional, spiritual, cultural, relational, and material realities of men. The stories men told during this ethnography supported the heteronormative understanding of masculinities that reinforced the narrative that “real men” should not express a wide …

From Abortion Rights To Reproductive Justice: A Call To Action, Erica Goldblatt Hyatt, Judith L.M. Mccoyd, Mery Diaz Feb 2022

From Abortion Rights To Reproductive Justice: A Call To Action, Erica Goldblatt Hyatt, Judith L.M. Mccoyd, Mery Diaz

Publications and Research

As aggressive cultural and legislative attacks on abortion rights and access continue, we call upon social workers to pursue the liberatory aims of the reproductive justice (RJ) movement. We argue that the RJ framework, rooted in feminist theory, aligns with social work’s social justice ethos and goals, appropriately guiding advocacy and intervention. After outlining the central aims and tenets of the RJ movement, we consider policies that impair RJ and those that could promote RJ, focusing on enhancing body sovereignty, childbearing, and parenting. We conclude with concrete recommendations for how social workers can pursue RJ professionally and personally.

Procedural Injustice: Indigenous Claims, Limitation Periods, And Laches, Kent Mcneil, Thomas Enns Feb 2022

Procedural Injustice: Indigenous Claims, Limitation Periods, And Laches, Kent Mcneil, Thomas Enns

All Papers

When Indigenous peoples go to court to seek justice for the historical wrongs they have endured, the Crown often tries to prevent their claims from even being heard by pleading statutes of limitations and laches. The application of these barriers raises serious constitution issues that have been taken account of by the Supreme Court only in the context of declarations of constitutional invalidity. Arguments based on the constitutional division of powers and section 35(1) of the Constitution Act, 1982 have not been addressed by the Court. As a result, limitations statutes that vary from province to province have been applied …

Contextualized Marketplace Ministry, Jamilah Merrick Feb 2022

Contextualized Marketplace Ministry, Jamilah Merrick

Doctor of Ministry

The United States has conducted genocide and weaponized its institutions by the perpetuation of structural racism against African Americans both historically and contemporarily. These methods have been co-opted covertly and overtly by governmental entities, institutions, and Americans themselves. Though the Federal government and individual states have initiated potential policies on reparations, the United States has failed to implement systematic reforms. To address these disparities, my NPO states: The historical persistence of structural racism and genocide against African Americans nullifies fiduciary reparations until comprehensive reforms are adopted.

Based on the research methodology and iteration processing, my NPO concentrates on African Americans …

How To Use A Theory Of Change To Monitor And Evaluate Social And Behavior Change Programs, Breakthrough Research

Reproductive Health

Breakthrough RESEARCH has developed a guide on how to use a theory of change to monitor and evaluate social and behavior change (SBC) programs. This guide will help managers support research, monitoring, and evaluation staff and ensure they have the programmatic data required to track results, and it will ensure the program is guided by robust theory-driven evidence with results tracked over time and at the program’s end. This guide is one of a series of Compass SBC how-to guides that provide step-by-step instructions on how to perform core SBC tasks. From formative research through monitoring and evaluation, these guides …

The Instrumental Case For Corporate Diversity, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone, Nancy Levit Feb 2022

The Instrumental Case For Corporate Diversity, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

The moral case for diversity in businesses is compelling. The business case for diversity (that “diverse companies do better”) is mixed: studies in the business literature do not prove that simply adding diversity causes the improvement; instead, they posit that the improvement is likely to be “endogenous,” that is, the factors that encourage and sustain diversity, such as greater transparency, also improve financial performance. In this article, we make what we call “the instrumental case for diversity.” If the same factors that correlate with greater diversity also correlate with improved performance, then greater diversity can be a benchmark for better …
