Analysis Of Black Female Belizean Stereotypes In Visual Media: Jezebel, Mammy, Sapphire, And Their Contributions To Violence Against Women, Kiesha Warren-Gordon, Deborah Mencias Mcmillan

Journal of International Women's Studies

Around the world, the representation of Black women in media is often flawed, as ideologies shaped by racism and white supremacy dominate the social construction of the representation of Black women in print media. This paper examines the use of “click speech” responses to a Facebook post where we condemn the use of what we perceive to be negative images of Black women used to market rum. Specifically, we ask the question: How do Belizeans respond to our request and our framing of the marketing campaign as being racist and sexist? Using a Belizean feminist lens, we analyze click speech …

Personal Narrative As Shaping The Activist Identity Of Religious Women In Israel, Ayelet Makaros, Edith Blit-Cohen Feb 2022

Personal Narrative As Shaping The Activist Identity Of Religious Women In Israel, Ayelet Makaros, Edith Blit-Cohen

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article is based on the life stories of 14 religious activist women in Israel. It aims to understand the extent to which these women’s stories and their childhood and maturation experiences shaped their activist identity. In this qualitative, critical-feminist study, the women activists’ life stories were examined using semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that personal or social events perceived as significant in the women’s lives as children and adolescents acted as catalysts for activism. These events were central to their personal narratives and became embedded in the women’s activist identity, as they came to perceive activism as the most …

Is Women’S Beauty Used As A Means To Achieve Certain Ends?:Pakistani Women’S Perceptions Of Body Objectification, Subaita Zubair

Journal of International Women's Studies

This qualitative ethnographic paper analyzes women’s perceptions of whether their beauty is utilized to achieve certain ends in Pakistani society. It highlights the objectification of the female body particularly in the field of academia and various job sectors. Female participants were both students and professionals. The age range of study participants included late adolescents (aged 18-24) and early adults (24-34) from the area of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Pakistan. In-depth, semi-structured interviews (17 interviewees) and focus group discussions (8 respondents, age 20-24) were used, and a thematic analysis was conducted. Results showed that women whose bodies reflect the commodified and sexualized …

Mobilizing Masculinity: Conscription, Gender, And Community Wellbeing In Lithuania, Frances Harrison Feb 2022

Mobilizing Masculinity: Conscription, Gender, And Community Wellbeing In Lithuania, Frances Harrison

Journal of International Women's Studies

In the wake of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, the conscription law in Lithuania has been reinstated for men, and partnerships with Western security structures reinforced. While young men are otherwise mobilizing to navigate socioeconomic uncertainty to improve their livelihoods under depressed conditions, the revitalization of mandatory military service increasingly polices individual experiences of wellbeing in gendered and nationalistic ways. Drawing from feminist analyses of securitization and from theories of gender performativity, this article examines how the Lithuanian State, together with the Lithuanian Armed Forces (LAF), mobilize masculinity and the construction of militarized identities in order to shape public support …

Tolkien As A Folk Horror Author, Monica Sanz Feb 2022

Tolkien As A Folk Horror Author, Monica Sanz

Online Midwinter Seminar (OMS)

Folk Horror, although being identified as a cinematographic genre quite recently, sinks its roots in an undeniable tradition of English writers who used English rural landscapes, ancient beliefs and culturally differentiated communities as humus for their prose and poetry. From the literary tradition of the 8th Century on, creatures and beliefs belonging to dark times have left their mark on our literature, traditions and folklore. Tolkien, as a philologist, was well aware of the hints and bits of these almost unknown legends and creatures left in our language, in the form of loose words, etymologies and fragmentary texts. In this …

Christianity And Critical Race Theory: A Flirtation With The Spirit Of This Age, Hayden B. O'Connor Feb 2022

Christianity And Critical Race Theory: A Flirtation With The Spirit Of This Age, Hayden B. O'Connor

Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy

Critical Race Theory is sweeping across the country, changing the way people see the world and creating its own version of American history. Critical Race Theory proclaims a different path towards “freedom” and “liberation”, yet it is a mirage, and the tactics they use to fight the systemic racism in the United States only produce more racism. Key terms like "intersectionality" and "racial equity" are used to describe how they plan to dismantle hierarchies and racism, yet these ideas are not what they seem at first glance. Critical Race Theory is a worldview that is not just about race: it …

Hiding In Plain Sight: Black Panther, International Law And The “Development Frame”, Christopher Gevers Feb 2022

Hiding In Plain Sight: Black Panther, International Law And The “Development Frame”, Christopher Gevers

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article explores the “troubling antinomies” of the 2018 film Black Panther and its entanglements with the collective fantasies of the West—and those of international lawyers and development technocrats in particular—through its reliance on the “lost world” genre, as typified by H. Rider Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines and John Buchan’s Prester John. The article then situates these troubling antinomies within the tradition of Black Internationalism and the novels of Pauline Hopkins, George S. Schuyler, and Peter Abrahams as practices of “poetic revolt.” Doing so, it is argued, reveals much about the conditions of possibility of the “development frame” and international …

Looking Into Law And Development: Pedagogies And Politics Of The Frame, Ruth Buchanan Feb 2022

Looking Into Law And Development: Pedagogies And Politics Of The Frame, Ruth Buchanan

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

International development can be understood as a particular way of seeing the world that is both a pedagogical and a political project. It frames the citizens of “underdeveloped” states as subjects, available to be both “seen” and “known” in particular ways that have important implications for governance and law. This Special Issue approaches development as a discourse and as a set of practices that encompass a “way of seeing” and operate as a “frame” through which the subjects of development are apprehended and acted upon.

“Making Up” With Law In Development, Kerry Rittich Feb 2022

“Making Up” With Law In Development, Kerry Rittich

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article draws on Ian Hacking’s idea of “making up people” to reflect on the relationship between development knowledge, practice, and expertise. Using Hacking’s five-part model as a counterpoint to mainstream accounts of development and its tasks, it (re)describes the manner in which development vision informs practice, while practice itself reconstructs the horizon of possibilities for developing states and their populations. The picture that emerges is one of tight interconnections between expertise-driven institutional practice and what we come to see and therefore to “know” about development. It is also one in which iconic figures such as the entrepreneurial woman emerge …

Structural Tightness And Social Conformity: Varying The Source Of External Influence, Lance W. Roberts, Edward D. Boldt, Anne Guest Feb 2022

Structural Tightness And Social Conformity: Varying The Source Of External Influence, Lance W. Roberts, Edward D. Boldt, Anne Guest

Great Plains Sociologist

This study reconceptualizes the term structural tightness in order to clarify the equivocal empirical findings in cross-cultural conformity research. Structural tightness is defined as the ability to impose collective role expectations on members of a community. The results often exploratory test of the theoretical proposal are reported and the implications for fiuture research are discussed. In general, the findings suggest that further investigation of the theoretical proposal is warranted. Researchers working within the social structure and personality framework continue to generate useful pure and applied research hypotheses (House, 1981; Spenner, 1988; Turner, 1988). Such advances are sustained by research that …
