The Prevalence Of Trauma In The Dunning Cemetery Population (1849 - 1861), Sofia Ponce
The Prevalence Of Trauma In The Dunning Cemetery Population (1849 - 1861), Sofia Ponce
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Bone fractures are extremely common, whether they come from high-energy or localized force. They are often found in skeletal remains from past populations. Examining fractures of past populations can give insight into their lives, the conditions of their environment, and interpersonal violence. This study examines fractures noted in the Chicago Dunning Poorhouse skeletal population, which has been dated from 1849 to 1861. In total, 120 individuals were excavated at the archeological site and 14 individuals appeared to display evidence of bone fractures from trauma. The frequency, location, and time of fractures will be analyzed and compared to similar archeological populations.

I have been lucky in my upbringing and education, and especially in having advisors who let me do what I wanted to even when they didn’t think it was a good idea. This allowed me to have a deeply rewarding career devoted to two entirely different topics – basic theory and research on emotion, and applied theory and research in psychology and law. My career spanned the period from when women were considered unsuitable for scientific or academic work through the rise of feminism, so although I faced obstacles, the culture was changing quickly enough that my unusual choices soon …
Buying Goodwill: Local And Regional Consumer Relationships In Nineteenth Century New Mexico, Erin Nicole Hegberg
Buying Goodwill: Local And Regional Consumer Relationships In Nineteenth Century New Mexico, Erin Nicole Hegberg
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation uses comparative analysis of four nineteenth century Hispanic sites to examine the daily practices by Hispanic residents of acquiring and consuming material goods (1821–1912). Through the practice of consumption, Hispanics created and reinforced social relationships with the groups who bartered or sold them goods. In frontier New Mexico consumer relationships reflected important networks that may have played a role in the creation and maintenance of modern Hispanic identity after U.S. annexation. The nineteenth century was a key moment in the developing racialization of Hispanic identity in New Mexico, which makes it a vital period of study for archaeologists …
Assessing Methods For Thin-Sectioning Teeth, Luz Castrejon
Assessing Methods For Thin-Sectioning Teeth, Luz Castrejon
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The goal of this study is to determine best techniques for thin sectioning, while also examining the necessity of this destructive method. Several parameters of the thin-sectioning technique were assessed, including epoxy type, epoxy block production, and de-gassing versus non-de-gassing the epoxy. Results show that alternative epoxy types are functional (Epo-Tek 301) as long as they are low viscosity. Placing the tooth in the mold first and de-gassing the epoxy prior to curing resulted in the fewest number of air bubbles, improving the accuracy of the sawing process. In conclusion, these updated parameters are recommended for future work.
Colonial Myths: The Conquest Of Cabeza De Vaca, Willie Hurst
Colonial Myths: The Conquest Of Cabeza De Vaca, Willie Hurst
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis examines the relaciónes (report) Naufragios (1542) and Comentarios (1555) with the intention of expanding upon the ample publications already existent on Cabeza de Vaca. With this thesis I offer a contrasting reading and reexamination of both of Cabeza de Vaca’s works. I argue that a number of the scholarly publications on Cabeza de Vaca fail to understand, define, and explore the identity and goals of Cabeza de Vaca as his own unique version of a conqueror which ultimately leads to a misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the texts. After an initial chapter discussing how Cabeza de Vaca never underwent …
Shocking: Using Machine Learning Techniques To Nowcast Lightning Strikes From Station Level Data, Michael D. Broussard
Shocking: Using Machine Learning Techniques To Nowcast Lightning Strikes From Station Level Data, Michael D. Broussard
LSU Master's Theses
Lightning strikes are incredibly common and potentially hazardous. Lightning can lead to loss of life, property damage, or can trigger other hazardous events like wildfires. They are also the result of incredibly complex physical processes in the atmosphere, making it challenging to predict strikes. However, given the extensive data and robust analytical techniques available, machine learning methods could be used to establish data relationships between lightning strikes and ground-level atmospheric measurements. Such a model could be used to provide any surface-based weather station with a method for predicting incoming strikes, making it easier to avoid the potentially hazardous effects of …

“Me Adjacent”: Alternate Personas And Virtual Worlds, Nichole Bresee, Katie Snow, Whitney Hall, Gracie Wilkinson, Leah Downey
Student Research Symposium
Research shows that people who engage in role-playing games (RPG), from video games to tabletop games, can derive feelings of achievement, as well as social and immersive experiences which can help them reach eudaimonic and hedonic states (Snodgrass et al. 2019). However, gaming has also been linked to negative emotions related to “problematic” and “addictive” play, related to toxic communities and compulsive gameplay. In this project, we examine how avatars — digital and imaginary representations of players — shape emotional states. Through free listing and pile sorting interviews, our results show how gamers relate to their avatars, and how these …
Making The Old New: The Recontextualization Of Tree Spirits In Video Games, Alexandria Ziegler
Making The Old New: The Recontextualization Of Tree Spirits In Video Games, Alexandria Ziegler
Student Research Symposium
Folklorists study the active rituals between humans and deities, as well as the inactive participation between them in narrative. However, they do not study the active participation that comes in the form of video games between them, though with shifts in society, this new way of engaging through digital forms is widespread and accessible. In my research, I studied Russian and Japanese tree spirits in a variety of video games to understand this new form of engagement with ancient deities. Through the lens of hypermodern and folkloresque folklore, I use the concepts of recontextualization and traditionalization to explain why video …

Mendelian Randomization Supports Bidirectional Causality Between Telomere Length And Clonal Hematopoiesis Of Indeterminate Potential, Tetsushi Nakao, C Charles Gu, Lisa De Las Fuentes, Et Al
Open Access Publications
Human genetic studies support an inverse causal relationship between leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and coronary artery disease (CAD), but directionally mixed effects for LTL and diverse malignancies. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), characterized by expansion of hematopoietic cells bearing leukemogenic mutations, predisposes both hematologic malignancy and CAD.
“Researcher-As-Instrument” In Qualitative Research: The Complexities Of The Educational Researcher’S Identities, Bogum Yoon Dr., Christine Uliassi
“Researcher-As-Instrument” In Qualitative Research: The Complexities Of The Educational Researcher’S Identities, Bogum Yoon Dr., Christine Uliassi
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study was to reexamine the principle of researcher-as-instrument to provide insights on methodological ways of engaging critically and reflexively. There are few published pieces that have given attention to the complexities of the educational researcher’s identities through the method of critical self-analysis. The researcher’s nine published case studies were critically reanalyzed by using the criteria of excellent qualitative research such as rich rigor to examine the relationship between the researcher’s identities and the quality of qualitative research. The findings suggest that the researcher’s published studies lack sincerity most among other criteria. The layered identities of the …

Desertification Risk Analysis For Wildlife In The Desert Renewable Energy Conversation Plan Area Of California, Serdar Sagdic
Desertification Risk Analysis For Wildlife In The Desert Renewable Energy Conversation Plan Area Of California, Serdar Sagdic
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Desertification is one of the primary threats facing the sustainability of the Earths’s natural resources. Desertification it is an outcome of human impacts to ecosystems and alterations of climate patterns resulting in land degradation and adverse effect on natural resources, vegetation loss, soil infertility, and water scarcity. These changes influence the existence and distribution of wildlife by reducing the availability and quality of habitat that provides food, water, cover, and other life requisites. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluation of potential desertification risks on wildlife species in the Desert Renewable Energy and Conservation Plan (DRECP) area of California.

Nature Deserves Rights, Too: The Case For A ‘Rights Of Nature’ Constitutional Amendment, Michelle Mandler
Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development
(Excerpt)
Picture this: Every day, millions of Americans enjoy the great outdoors. People of all ages dive into cool, blue oceans and babbling rivers across the United States. Others visit local and National parks, hiking steep mountains and running through green fields sprinkled with tall trees and sweet-smelling flowers in every color. They pick and snack on apples and berries along their paths, breathing in the crisp outdoor air. Birds soar overhead. Insects buzz and flutter through the breeze. Sunshine gleams down upon the earth.
Now, picture this: The surrounding environment is actually deteriorating— silently suffering—and harming these people all …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference
Thailand has struggled with malnutrition rates in young children. Rice is a key component of Southeast Asian diets and a whole grain rice varietal (Sin Lek) may support improved nutrition. Diet can influence cognitive function and human gut microbiota, which were explored in the context of a rice intervention. We conducted a pilot study using a non-randomized, crossover clinical trial of Sin Lek rice versus traditional white rice consumption in elementary school children in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Outcomes related to diet, anthropological factors, cognitive function (e.g., short-term working memory, attention, impulsivity), and gut microbial populations were measured at baseline and …

2022 Launch, Seminar 1; Sovereign Systems: Following The Trade Routes, Wayne Jowandi Barker, Karl Hampton, Steve Kinnane
Talking Heads Seminar Series
‘Following the Trade Routes’ is a country centred project revitalising critical cultural practices and networks that once brought together Aboriginal groups from three States of Australia. Existing anthropological research recognises a long history of Aboriginal peoples travelling on country, following deeply spiritual song lines and exchanging significant items or tools. Aboriginal Elders with lived experience of the trade routes have been brought together to share their cultural knowledge and to compare it with contemporary practice. This project is empowering the cultural bosses to reinvigorate fundamental and foundational cultural governance systems founded in sovereignty and trade. This presentation will highlight the …
Unmarked Human Burial Site Policy In Louisiana: Pre-Columbian Context And Community Perspectives, Sadie M. Schoeffler
Unmarked Human Burial Site Policy In Louisiana: Pre-Columbian Context And Community Perspectives, Sadie M. Schoeffler
LSU Master's Theses
Since the passing of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990 (NAGPRA), state governments have implemented similar policies that allow for Native American tribes without federal recognition to petition for the repatriation of human remains and objects significant to their culture (Seidemann, 2010). Per La. R.S. 8:671-681, which is the Louisiana Unmarked Human Burial Sites Preservation Act of 1992 (UBA), the Division of Archaeology in the Louisiana State Office of Cultural Development is responsible for overseeing the protection and preservation of unmarked burials. These burials are often of pre-Columbian or historic cultural and temporal context, which warrants …

The Symptom Of Ethics: Rethinking Ethics In The Face Of The Machine, David J. Gunkel
The Symptom Of Ethics: Rethinking Ethics In The Face Of The Machine, David J. Gunkel
Human-Machine Communication
This essay argues that it is the machine that constitutes the symptom of ethics— “symptom” understood as that excluded “part that has no part” in the system of moral consideration. Ethics, which has been historically organized around a human or at least biological subject, needs the machine to define the proper limits of the moral community even if it simultaneously excludes such mechanisms from any serious claim on moral consideration. The argument will proceed in five steps or movements. The first part will define and characterize “the symptom” as it has been operationalized in the work of Slovenian philosopher Slavoj …

Framing The Psycho-Social And Cultural Aspects Of Human-Machine Communication, Leopoldina Fortunati, Autumn P. Edwards
Human-Machine Communication
In this introduction to the fourth volume of the journal Human-Machine Communication, we present and discuss the nine articles selected for inclusion. In this essay, we aim to frame some crucial psychological, sociological, and cultural aspects of this field of research. In particular, we situate the current scholarship from a historical perspective by (a) discussing humanity’s long walk with hybridity and otherness, at both the cultural and individual development levels, (b) considering how the organization of capital, labor, and gender relations serve as fundamental context for understanding HMC in the present day, and (c) contextualizing the development of the HMC …

Spatiotemporal Changes Of Eco-Environmental Quality Based On Remote Sensing-Based Ecological Index In The Hotan Oasis, Xinjiang, Yao Kaixuan, Abudureheman Halike, Chen Limei, Wei Qianqian
Journal of Arid Land
The rapid economic development that the Hotan Oasis in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China has undergone in recent years may face some challenges in its ecological environment. Therefore, an analysis of the spatiotemporal changes in ecological environment of the Hotan Oasis is important for its sustainable development. First, we constructed an improved remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and implemented change detection for their spatial distribution. Second, we performed a spatial autocorrelation analysis on RSEI distribution map and used land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) data …

Nationalized Cosmopolitanism With Communist Characteristics: The Esperanto Movement's Survival Strategy In Post-World War Ii Bulgaria, Ana Velitchkova
Faculty and Student Publications
The case of the Bulgarian Esperanto movement under state socialism demonstrates a social movement can survive under authoritarianism by establishing a legitimate activist culture acceptable to the regime while pursuing its intrinsic goals. Bulgaria, a close Soviet ally, was a difficult case of movement survival. In the early years following World War II, the national Esperanto periodical Bulgara Esperantisto was a key organizing tool for the movement reporting on its activities, reaching out to potential recruits, and legitimizing the movement under the new communist-led regime. Examining the periodical's discourse over a two-year period, I find that the movement managed to …

Postorbital Discard And Chain Of Custody: The Processing Of Artifacts Returning To Earth From The International Space Station, Justin St. P. Walsh, Alice C. Gorman, Paola Castaño
Art Faculty Articles and Research
Few items that comprise the material culture of the International Space Station ever return to Earth. Most are left on the station or placed on cargo resupply ships that burn up on atmospheric re-entry. This fact presents a challenge for archaeologists who use material culture as their primary evidence. Together with a sociologist, we observed the processes that have been developed by NASA contractors to handle and return items that come back to Earth on the Cargo Dragon vehicle. We observed two missions, CRS-13 and CRS-14, in January and May 2018, respectively, traveling to the locations of work and interviewing …
