Cultivating Agrobiodiversity In The U.S.: Barriers And Bridges At Multiple Scales, Kaitlyn A. Spangler May 2022

Cultivating Agrobiodiversity In The U.S.: Barriers And Bridges At Multiple Scales, Kaitlyn A. Spangler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The diversity of crops grown in the United States (U.S.) is declining, causing agricultural landscapes to become more and more simplified. This trend is concerning for the loss of important plant, insect, and animal species, as well as the pollution and degradation of our environment. Through three separate but related studies, this dissertation addresses the need to increase the diversity of these agricultural landscapes in the U.S., particularly through diversifying the type and number of crops grown. The first study uses multiple, openly accessible datasets related to agricultural land use and policies to document and visualize change over recent decades. …

Previous research has shown that women with children face a motherhood bias that results in negative career outcomes such as reduced wages, fewer high-quality assignments, and decreased chances for promotion and leadership opportunities. This research investigates how professional mothers respond to that bias by analyzing interviews with forty-seven women in the field of law about their professional experiences: their experiences before and after having children; the challenges they face navigating their careers and families; and the strategies they’ve …

Bts Army: Melampaui Narasi Stigmatisasi Identitas Perempuan Penggemar, Jasmine Floretta Vasthia Devi

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Decades have passed, but female fans who like male idols are still stigmatized, judged, and reduced to exist in society and popular culture. This is also what happened to ARMY, fans of the male idol group BTS. The research uses a qualitative research methodology elaborated through a feminist perspective to discuss how ARMYs are stigmatized because of the perceived inferiority of women and the existence of male domination in society, and also their love for the male group, regarded as the subordinated male group within the circle of hegemonic masculinity. However, the stigma and gender stereotypes attached to them were …

Kalimat Interogatif Dialek Gyeongsang Dalam Reply 1997, Adinda Noviana Carlissa, Putu Pramania Adnyana

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

The Gyeongsang dialect is phonologically and morphologically unique, yet current research generally focuses only on its prosody characteristics. Research related to language style and sentence-final ending in the Gyeongsang dialect has received less attention. Therefore, this study focuses on sentence-final ending or jeongyeol eomi in Korean interrogative sentences to fill the research gap. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive analysis method. Data is collected from the Korean drama Reply 1997 from the first three episodes. The result shows that a closed-ended interrogative sentence is the type of interrogative sentence most commonly used in the data, while the most …

Motivating First-Generation Factory Employees: A Case Study Of The Garment Industry In Myanmar, Eitaro Kojima, Akihiko Ohno

Design/methodology/approach: A total of 728 employees of the garment sector in Myanmar were surveyed using a structured questionnaire.

Research Findings: The results of this study indicate 1) that employees’ maladaptation to factory discipline leads to workplace stress and fuels employees’ counter-productive behaviour and 2) that employees who perceive benevolence from the factory manager take on pro-organizational (vs counter-productive) behaviour based on social exchange rooted in indigenous patron-client ties.

Theoretical Contribution/Originality: This study discusses the singular aspects of human resource …

Life After Steel: How Covid-19 Shed Light On Canton Township's Industrial Past, Daniel D. Dillon

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

Undeniably, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the ways in which life carries on, whether this manifests in the forms of altering how people interact or how individuals work to further career goals. In the field of archaeology, attending an accredited field school takes central importance to developing much-needed skills; however, the virus made such opportunities nonexistent. Seeking a remedy for this rapidly-changing situation, I decided to make the decision to run a “field school” in my parents’ backyard. What was uncovered went beyond the nearly 300 recovered artifacts, extending into the largely unexplored history of Canton Township, Washington, Pennsylvania. Just …

Some Thoughts On Spanish East And West Florida, James G. Cusick Apr 2022

Some Thoughts On Spanish East And West Florida, James G. Cusick

Florida Historical Quarterly

As Andrew McMichael points out in Atlantic Loyalties, the eastern Spanish borderlands of Louisiana and the Floridas suffered constant upheaval in the 40 years between 1778 and 1818. During those years, some fourteen different episodes of conspiracy, revolt, or invasion shook colonial society, beginning with the raids of James Willing in 1778 and carrying on through the First Seminole War of 1817-1818 (see Table 1).1 Although several of these upheavals stemmed from general warfare in the region, many were instigated by fairly small groups of men who played upon the discontent of fellow settlers or who drew on a base …

2010 Friends Of The Florida Historical Society Keynote Lecture: The First Coming Of Judeo-Christian Religion To Florida, Michael Gannon

Florida Historical Quarterly

We are foregathered this evening in what I like to call the United States' City of Centuries- four and a half to be exact come 2015. Among this city's many claims is that it served as the American nation's cradle of Western religion. Here in 1565 was founded the first Christian parish, named after the fifth century North African bishop and theologian Augustine of Hippo. Here, too, in 1587, was established the first Christian mission, named Nombre de Dios, to the native peoples of North America north of Mexico. In turn, those religious institutions gave rise to our state's and …

"The Most Exotic Of Our Cities": Race, Place, Writing, And George Allan England's Key West, Philip Levy Apr 2022

"The Most Exotic Of Our Cities": Race, Place, Writing, And George Allan England's Key West, Philip Levy

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the late 1920s, a prominent American writer arrived in Key West. He and his wife came to this Florida backwater to escape chilly winters and to carve out time for writing. Once settled in town, the writer gradually eased into the rhythms of Key West life. He built personal connections and began observing local characters who, in time, would re-emerge in his stories. He liked boats and the outdoors life. He had an inclination toward dangerous adventures and enjoyment of killing animals as well as an ability to convey these sentiments to audiences through popular literature. While in the …

A Translation History Of Fontaneda, Peter Ferdinando Apr 2022

A Translation History Of Fontaneda, Peter Ferdinando

Florida Historical Quarterly

The captivity of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda by the Calusa Indians led to the creation of a series of documents that vividly depict the indigenous peoples of southern Florida. These writings clearly have proto-ethnographic qualities. Students of Florida history and archaeology have frequently utilized this information to better understand native peoples who lived on the peninsula.2 In the case of Fontaneda's writings, however, we must ask vital questions about translation. He wrote in sixteenth century Spanish, yet the current lingua franca of the academic and research community in the United States is the English of the twenty-first century. This paper …

Unearthing The Witch: Reckoning With Gender, Magic, And The Unusual Dead Within Anglo-Saxon Deviant Burials, Samantha Melvin Apr 2022

Unearthing The Witch: Reckoning With Gender, Magic, And The Unusual Dead Within Anglo-Saxon Deviant Burials, Samantha Melvin

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The fifth to seventh centuries CE, or the Migration Period, marked the development of Anglo-Saxon culture and society in England. The early Anglo-Saxons are known largely through their material culture and mortuary practices, left behind in medieval cemeteries that twist their way across the English landscape. The remains of early Anglo-Saxons tell rich and interesting histories about past peoples, but within the broader landscapes of these cemeteries are deviant burials. These are burials that are specifically typified as ones that ‘deviate’ from the norm, usually indicating that the inhumed individual was punished in death for actions committed in life. These …

Barriers To Public Health In Latino American Indigenous Communities, Wilzave Quiles Guzman Apr 2022

Barriers To Public Health In Latino American Indigenous Communities, Wilzave Quiles Guzman

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

This paper focuses on barriers to public health in Latino American Indigenous communities. Indigenous people throughout the world are at a public health disadvantage due to a lack of clearly defined practices within the decision-making processes to plan, evaluate, and control finances from governmental and non-governmental entities in charge of managing health services. I argue that political, social, and institutional changes are still needed to achieve health equity in Indigenous communities and that these changes should go beyond implementing a universal health care program. I must recognize improvements made by many Latino American countries like Brazil, which prepared a plan …
