Palestinian American Women’S Marriages Within And Beyond Borders, Enaya Othman Jul 2022

Palestinian American Women’S Marriages Within And Beyond Borders, Enaya Othman

Arabic Languages and Literatures

This article explores American Palestinian women’s discursive strategies and identity politics by which they take control of their marital choices. Through the analysis of sixteen in-depth interviews with second-generation Palestinian women and personal observations within the community, the article shows that nationalist and religious discourses produced by the historical contexts respectively stimulated (semi)arranged in-group marriages in the 1990s and self-initiated exogamous marriages as of the early 2000s. Among the group, Islam has become the primary form of identification, and religious discourse has been circulating within Islamic institutions post-1980s. Based on this transformation, the study draws on the strategic use of …

Trauma Exposure And Trauma Symptoms As Predictors Of Police Perceptions In Latinx Youths, Amanda Venta, Germán Cadenas, Alfonso Mercado, Luz M. Garcini, Melanie M. Domenech Rodríguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

Objective: The Latinx immigrant youth population composes nearly a quarter of all children in the U.S. and are a high-risk group for police encounters. Based on perceptions of Latinxs as criminals, increased enforcement actions against Latinxs in the U.S., and failures of policing and police brutality in immigrants’ home countries, we expected that immigrants who reported increased trauma exposure and symptoms would have more negative perceptions of police. Method: This study utilized data from 107 recently immigrated Latinx youth to examine how trauma exposure (Child Trauma Screen) and symptoms (Child PTSD Symptoms Scale) related to perceptions of police (Criminal Sentiments …

Cranial Thickness In Relation To Age, Gender And Head Circumference In Thai Population, Sumas Ruenhuns, Vijarn Vachirawongsakorn

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background: The skull is one of the most studied materials of the human bone. To date, several studies have investigated the range of cranial vault thickness variation in modern human. Objective: To investigate the average thickness of cranial vaults in different positions and their relation to individual variables in the Thai population. Methods: Cranial vaults of 118 male and 59 female cadavers aged over 20 years were eligible for the study. The measurement of the cranial vault was conducted as described: frontal cranial thickness (FCT), occipital cranial thickness (OCT), left and right lateral cranial thickness (LCT). The relationship between the …

Analyzing Identity Trajectories Within The Physics Community, Gina M. Quan, Chandra Turpen, Andrew Elby Jul 2022

Analyzing Identity Trajectories Within The Physics Community, Gina M. Quan, Chandra Turpen, Andrew Elby

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We analyze the identity trajectory of a single case study, Cassidy, within the physics community. We focus our analysis on two settings in the physics community: an undergraduate research experience, and undergraduate coursework. We use video data from three interviews (spanning roughly fifteen months) to longitudinally analyze shifts in participation. We discuss Cassidy's experience through two constructs: normative identities, Cassidy's sense of the valued roles within physics, as well as personal identity, who Cassidy is within the physics community and the extent to which she aligns with normative identities. In attending to shifts in the alignment between personal and normative …

Addressing The Issue Of Low Discipleship Among Adults, Sylvestre Bea Jul 2022

Addressing The Issue Of Low Discipleship Among Adults, Sylvestre Bea

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research aims to help EndTime Christ Discipling Ministries identify the root causes for low levels of adult discipleship. It supports the church’s collective construction of measurable actions that members can implement to fulfill its disciple-making mandate effectively. The literature review reveals that many churches experience this problem, identify common causes, and discuss diverse solutions that better fit churches with predominantly North American culture. However, EndTime Christ Discipling Ministries is composed of mostly African immigrants and their families, and no literature specifically addresses its immediate context. As a result, the remedies proposed to tackle the discipleship challenge are not fully …

Knowledge Engineering and Data Science

Cranial anthropometric reference points (landmarks) play an important role in craniofacial reconstruction and identification. Knowledge to detect the position of landmarks is critical. This work aims to locate landmarks automatically. Landmarks positioning using Surface Curvature Feature (SCF) is inspired by conventional methods of finding landmarks based on morphometrical features. Each cranial landmark has a unique shape. With the appropriate 3D descriptors, the computer can draw associations between shapes and landmarks using machine learning. The challenge in classification and detection in three-dimensional space is to determine the model and data representation. Using three-dimensional raw data in machine learning is a serious …

A yearlong collective auto-ethnographic stories of three colleagues at a Hispanic Serving Institution at the U.S.–Mexican frontera culminated in the realization that our disparate experiences, the multiple voices used in articulating these, and the diverse ways these manifested in classroom practices and interactions had crafted the only academic space where we-three felt to belong.

Odontometric Sex Estimation Using A Modern Forensic Skeletal Collection, Andrea Sbei Jul 2022

Odontometric Sex Estimation Using A Modern Forensic Skeletal Collection, Andrea Sbei

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Forensic anthropologists are responsible for estimating the biological profile—the age, sex, population affinity, and stature—of unknown deceased individuals. Many methods used for estimating the biological profile are sex-specific, which implicates sex estimation as one of the most important components of the biological profile. Historically, the skull and postcranial elements have been heavily utilized for morphological and metric sex estimation methods, whereas odontometric methods have been overlooked and underutilized. Odontometric data has proven to be a worthwhile avenue for the estimation of sex in several population-based studies (Acharya et al., 2011; Adams & Pilloud, 2019; Angadi et al., 2013; Cardoso, 2008; …

Sociodemographic Determinants Of Librarians’ Psychological Wellbeing: An Ex-Post Facto Research, Christian S. Ugwuanyi Phd

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Considering the enormous responsibilities placed on school librarians, this study explored the sociodemographic determinants of school librarians’ psychological wellbeing in Nigeria. This study used an ex-post facto research design. Drawing from the scientific research paradigm and quantitative research approach, data were obtained on 145 school librarians using the Psychological wellbeing scale (α = .82). The 145 librarians were sampled from both Federal and state Universities in southeast Nigeria. The data were analysed using the mean and analysis of variance. The study found that, while age had no significant (p > .05) influence on librarians' psychological wellbeing, qualification had a significant …

The Bluff And Blanding Fights: Race, Religion, And Settler Colonialism In Progressive-Era America, Reilly Ben Hatch Jul 2022

The Bluff And Blanding Fights: Race, Religion, And Settler Colonialism In Progressive-Era America, Reilly Ben Hatch

History ETDs

This project uses the Bluff War of 1915 and the Posey War of 1923—both of which took place in southeastern Utah—to look at the complex relationship between race, religion, and culture in American Indian policy at the beginning of the twentieth century. It shows how White Mesa Utes, local Mormon settlers, the federal government, and Progressive activists used the conflicts to argue the place of Indians in a “frontier-less” America. It also examines the complex relationship between Mormons and Indians and draws conclusions on how that relationship was influenced by an American government which sought to assimilate “others” into the …

Relational Peace In Colombia: An Ethnography Of Multi-Scalar Affective Relations Among Peace Practitioners, María Del Pilar File-Muriel Jul 2022

Relational Peace In Colombia: An Ethnography Of Multi-Scalar Affective Relations Among Peace Practitioners, María Del Pilar File-Muriel

Anthropology ETDs

Following the 2016 National Peace Accords in Colombia, violence targeting human rights activists and community leaders increased. Thus, it is essential to study peacemaking beyond the state’s implementation of the peace accords. I look at the process of relationship making among the assemblage of peace practitioners that constitute peace work in Colombia. The data comes from ethnographic fieldwork during 2016- 2018. I provide three chapter-length ethnographies of spatializations of peace: Humanitarian and biodiversity zones/spaces (Buenaventura), indigenous territorial practices of peace (Cauca), and a transnational alliance between the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó (Antioquia) and a group of Syrian …

The Political Urgency Of Black Manhood: Frederick Douglass On Constitutional Theory, John M. Kang Jul 2022

The Political Urgency Of Black Manhood: Frederick Douglass On Constitutional Theory, John M. Kang

Faculty Scholarship

How did Frederick Douglass—one who was born a slave, one who had been denied all formal education, one who had been sundered from his family, one who had been starved, tortured, and, on occasion, nearly killed—manage to muster the courage to do something as bold as challenge the United States Supreme Court? This Article suggests that Douglass, in order to assert his right as an American citizen, first had to assert his right as a man in an explicitly gendered sense. That is, Douglass had to muster a powerful sense of manliness that could elevate him psychologically to assert his …

"We Make New Families:" Findings From A Family Court Mediation Study, Alexandra Crampton Jul 2022

"We Make New Families:" Findings From A Family Court Mediation Study, Alexandra Crampton

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Mediation was brought into family court cases as a divorce litigation alternative. Today, parents are not only encouraged but mandated across most U.S. states to consider mediation before further court action can be taken. Research has not kept up with understanding how publicly mandated and subsidized mediation services become part of court cases and possible case resolution. This article reviews how mediation has evolved from outside alternative to family court “workhorse” within a family dispute resolution paradigm centered on shared parenting as in the best interest of children. Research results from a family court mediation program are presented to highlight …

Publications and Research
