Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
⦁ Background: Despite the continuous interest in the search for therapeutic agents, little attention has been given to the medicinal relevance of earthworm casts, with even less interest in over-seasoned worm-casts. Therefore, this study determined the phytochemical, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic properties of over-seasoned worm-casts of the earthworm Hyperiodrilus africanus (Eudrilidae). Methods: The earthworm casts were extracted with n-hexane, ethanol, and water and the crude extracts were evaluated for the presence of chemical constituents and antimicrobial properties. Cytotoxicity was inferred from the antimitotic effects of the extracts on the radicles of germinating seeds of Sorghum bicolor. Results: The chemical constituent determinations …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Aristolochia longa L. is a plant native to Algeria and Morocco that has been used by the locals to combat different arrays of infections and diseases found among them. This particular plant is well-known for its therapeutic qualities that could be traced back to the presence of many effective phytochemicals that have been extrapolated from the different parts of the plant, like the leaves and roots: flavonoids, saponins, tannins, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, β-carotenes, limonenes, and palmitic acids. This plant has been identified in different research articles to be able to manage diseases effectively because it possesses some pharmacological attributes such as; …

Review Of Madeleine L.H. Campbell's Animals, Ethics And Us, Teddy Duncan Jr.
Review Of Madeleine L.H. Campbell's Animals, Ethics And Us, Teddy Duncan Jr.
Between the Species
In Animals, Ethics, and Us, Dr. Madeleine L.H. Campbell offers insight into the moral landscape of human-animal relations through a specific ethical framework that rejects the rights of non-human animals, opting instead for a “qualified utilitarian approach” (2019, 9). For Campbell, animal ethics should not be bound to animal rights or the autonomy of individual animals; she asserts that animal rights should not factor into the moral consideration of animals at all. Since she does not confer animals a moral status or form of rights and instead relies on the utilitarian approach, Campbell attempts to locate the justifying logic …

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
Endogenous biomolecules and soft tissues are known to persist in the fossil record. To date, these discoveries derive from a limited number of preservational environments, (e.g., fluvial channels and floodplains), and fossils from less common depositional environments have been largely unexplored. We conducted paleomolecular analyses of shallow marine vertebrate fossils from the Cretaceous-Paleogene Hornerstown Formation, an 80-90% glauconitic greensand from Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park in Mantua Township, NJ. Twelve samples were demineralized and found to yield products morphologically consistent with vertebrate osteocytes, blood vessels, and bone matrix. Specimens from these deposits that are dark in color exhibit excellent …

The Impact Of Delayed Surgical Care On Patient Outcomes With Alimentary Tract Perforation: Insight From A Low-Middle Income Country, Hasnain Zafar, Taha Ahmad Zaka-Ur-Rehman, Muhammad Sohaib Khan, Shayan Ahmed, Amir Hafeez Shariff
Section of General Surgery
Introduction: In-patient delay is associated with increased mortality in patients with alimentary tract perforations. Access to surgical care is a glaring health issue in low-middle income countries (LMICs), where patient presentation is also delayed for a myriad of reasons, which can be broadly categorized as social/cultural, financial, and structural in their nature. The impact these delays have on surgical outcomes in low-middle income countries is not known.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent emergency laparotomy for alimentary tract perforation from July 2015 to June 2018 was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Time was …

Invariant natural killer T cell (iNKT) subsets are differentially distributed in various immune organs. However, it remains unclear whether iNKT cells exhibit phenotypical and functional differences in different peripheral organs and how thymic iNKT cells emigrate to peripheral organs. Here, we used single-cell RNA-seq to map iNKT cells from peripheral organs. iNKT1 cells from liver, spleen, and lymph node appear to have distinct phenotypic profiles and functional capabilities. However, iNKT17 transcriptomes were comparable across peripheral organs. In addition, by integrating data with a thymic iNKT cell study, we uncovered a transient population of recent thymic emigrants, a cluster of peripheral …
Yoga As Property: A Century Of United States Yoga Copyrights, 1937–2021, Roopa Bala Singh
Yoga As Property: A Century Of United States Yoga Copyrights, 1937–2021, Roopa Bala Singh
Denver Law Review
Public debate on yoga as property fixates on whether yoga should be owned, asking if yoga can be Indian property. Framed as such, the public discourse obscures a century-long, ravenous arc of yoga ownership in the United States, accumulated by whiteness, beginning in the early twentieth century. What do the stories of yoga in American law tell us and hide about property and intellectual property? In this critical intellectual property (IP) study, I present the first map of U.S. yoga copyrights grounded in quantitative data. The map reflects that yoga has been exponentially “propertized” by U.S. copyright law. My evidentiary …

Foreword: Mapping Critical Geographies In Virtual Space, Shelley Cavalieri, Saru M. Matambanadzo, Lua Kamal Yuille
Denver Law Review
In this Foreword to the LatCrit Symposium, the authors introduce the work of the 2021 LatCrit Biennial Meeting. They frame the movement as one of critical and liberatory theorizing in a time of retrenchment of opposition to the antisubordination project, highlighting the many strands of Critical Legal Studies that find home in the big tent of the LatCrit community. They introduce and contextualize within the broader critical theory literature four Articles written by members of the LatCrit community. Finally, they assert their own challenge to the movement, calling on critical legal scholars to question more seriously the meritocratic and productivist …

Heavy Metal Levels And Sources In Suspended Particulate Matters Of The Glacier Watersheds In Northeast Tibetan Plateau, Rui Wu, Zhiwen Dong, Xiping Cheng, Janice Brahney, Xiaoyu Jiao, Lihua Wu
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
This study collected summer meltwater runoff samples from several glacier watersheds of the northeast Tibetan Plateau during June-July 2017, and measured the concentrations of 17 trace elements (Li, Be, Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Mo, Cd, In, Sb, Cs, Ba) in meltwater suspended particulate matter (SPM), in order to reveal the elemental concentration, spatial distribution, and water quality in remote glacier watershed under regional anthropogenic activities. Results showed that, the concentration of heavy metal elements was relatively high in Yuzhufeng Glacier basin, ranging from 0.57 μg/L (In) to 1,551.6 μg/L (Ba), whereas in Qiyi Glacier basin …
Exploring Bipoc Student Experiences And The Teacher’S Role In Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Elizabeth Cheesman
Exploring Bipoc Student Experiences And The Teacher’S Role In Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Elizabeth Cheesman
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Though there have been efforts to address racism in schools, there is a lack of anti-racist pedagogy discussion and its role in changing education and therefore changing the world. Teachers often are able to grasp an understanding of racism and how that may impact their students through professional development. There is a significant lack of action in working to dismantle the racism seen in schools, however. Racism in the classroom may look like a colonized curriculum and implicit biases that influence the way students are perceived and treated in the school. Anti-racist pedagogy works to actively join the fight against …
