An Occupational Therapy Guidebook For Individuals With Substance Use Disorder, Cassidy B. Ardoin Aug 2022

An Occupational Therapy Guidebook For Individuals With Substance Use Disorder, Cassidy B. Ardoin

Student Capstone Papers

Individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) experience barriers and challenges that impact their daily occupational performance, engagement, well-being, and quality of life. In addition to disrupting and distorting an individual’s unique occupational outcomes, SUDs can limit, replace, and dictate an individual’s daily meaningful activities, habits, routines, and skills that support healthy occupational engagement. Occupational therapy (OT) practitioners have a unique and valuable role in SUDs treatment as they are equipped to identify these barriers and implement strategies for supportive skill development or restoration. Based on the literature review conducted, OT practitioners do not have an OT practice guideline, protocol, or …

Associations Of Rare Caddisflies With The Western Dwarf Salamander Eurycea Paludicola, Lillie Hawkins Aug 2022

Associations Of Rare Caddisflies With The Western Dwarf Salamander Eurycea Paludicola, Lillie Hawkins

Biology Theses

There is limited information on the three species of caddisflies Philopotamidae Chimarra holzenthali, Hydropsychidae Cheumatopsyche morsei, Hydroptilidae Hydroptila ouachita and the western dwarf salamander Eurycea paludicola. In particular, there is a lack of any habitat associations between these caddisflies and the western dwarf salamander. Museum specimens of the caddisflies are scarce; however, the literature suggests they are spring dwelling like the western dwarf salamander. The goal of this project was to sample previously known and new habitats where these organisms might be found and report overall quality of the habitats and whether the caddisflies were associated with …

Snapping Shrimp Have Helmets That Protect Their Brains By Dampening Shock Waves, Alexandra C.N. Kingston, Sarah A. Woodin, David S. Wethey, Daniel Isaac Speiser Aug 2022

Snapping Shrimp Have Helmets That Protect Their Brains By Dampening Shock Waves, Alexandra C.N. Kingston, Sarah A. Woodin, David S. Wethey, Daniel Isaac Speiser

Faculty Publications

Shock waves are supersonic high-amplitude pressure waves that cause barotrauma when they transfer kinetic energy to the tissues of animals.1, 2, 3, 4 Snapping shrimp (Alpheidae) produce shock waves and are exposed to them frequently, so we asked if these animals have evolved mechanisms of physical protection against them. Snapping shrimp generate shock waves by closing their snapping claws rapidly enough to form cavitation bubbles that release energy as an audible “snap” and a shock wave when they collapse.5, 6, 7, 8 We tested if snapping shrimp are protected from shock waves by a helmet-like extension of their exoskeleton termed …

Impacts Of Drugs On Neurotransmission, Wenrong He Aug 2022

Impacts Of Drugs On Neurotransmission, Wenrong He

Theses

The most sophisticated and mysterious human organ is the brain. The human brain is made up of billions of neurons, which are working nonstop to send and receive messages to regulate the body’s basic functions. Neurons communicate by releasing neurotransmitters from a sending neuron into the synapse, then a receiving neuron picks up the signals on its receptors from neurotransmitters. Drugs can interfere with the communication between neurons in the brain. They can affect the way people feel, react or behave. Drug use impacts the brain’s neuronal circuits which may lead to inflexible behaviors, lack of self-control, and compulsive drug …

The Effects Of Task Novelty On Memory For Everyday Meal Preparation Tasks Among Young Adults And Older Adults, Michael Persin Aug 2022

The Effects Of Task Novelty On Memory For Everyday Meal Preparation Tasks Among Young Adults And Older Adults, Michael Persin

Psychology and Counseling Theses

The use of nonsensical information in the study of learning and memory goes back to the beginning of the field of psychology. Nonsensical information makes it difficult to rely on previous learning, increasing task novelty and providing insight into the learning of new tasks. However, little research exists investigating the role of task novelty in everyday activities such as cooking, which involve overlearned skills. This study aims to investigate the role of task novelty in everyday memory for meal preparation tasks in virtual reality. Young adults (n = 41; age M = 18.77, SD = 1.40) and older adults …

Assessing The Current State Of Louisiana's Crawfish Fishery: Trends And Challenges In Wild Capture And Aquaculture, Mahala G. Gambill Aug 2022

Assessing The Current State Of Louisiana's Crawfish Fishery: Trends And Challenges In Wild Capture And Aquaculture, Mahala G. Gambill

LSU Master's Theses

Crawfish are found throughout the southern U.S.; however, Louisiana is by far the largest producer. The state’s industry includes harvesting wild crawfish from natural habitats such as bayous, swamps, and marshes, and crawfish reared in outdoor ponds. Although commercial harvest records are available, characterization of Louisiana’s wild capture crawfish fishery in recent years is undocumented, and analysis of environmental variables that could be correlated with annual harvest totals have not yet been explored. Using trip ticket data from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, I characterized monthly and annual trends within Louisiana basins to assess changes in crawfish harvest …

Finite Element Modeling Of Force Amplification At The Spindle Due To A Tire’S Cavity Mode: Experimental Verification, Won Hong Choi, Kyosung Choo, J Stuart Bolton Aug 2022

Finite Element Modeling Of Force Amplification At The Spindle Due To A Tire’S Cavity Mode: Experimental Verification, Won Hong Choi, Kyosung Choo, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Reduction of tire road noise is an important issue when developing luxury cars and electric vehicles. In this context, the air cavity mode is an important source of spindle forces transmitted to the suspension that then increase interior noise levels. When a tire rotates, the cavity mode near 200 Hz splits into two adjacent modes due to a Doppler effect and tire deformation. That split can lead to increased levels of both longitudinal and vertical spindle forces at the spindle since the two acoustic modes each contribute to both forces when the tire rotates. Thus, it is important to develop …

Deaccession Decision-Making During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Multi-Site Case Study Of Art Museums In The United States, Shannon Hahn Aug 2022

Deaccession Decision-Making During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Multi-Site Case Study Of Art Museums In The United States, Shannon Hahn

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

At the beginning of the pandemic, museums were forced to close, resulting in significant losses in earned revenue. To address budgetary shortfalls across the museum field, the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) temporarily relaxed their deaccessioning guidelines to allow museums to sell works of art from their collections and use proceeds to support the direct care of collections. This project utilized a qualitative multi-site case study and textual analysis to examine deaccession decisions of four art museums in the United States that deaccessioned works of art during the pandemic. Textual data was collected from online newspaper articles, press releases, …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In the internet era, the digital architecture that keeps us connected and informed may also amplify the spread of misinformation. This problem is gaining global attention, as evidence accumulates that misinformation may interfere with democratic processes and undermine collective responses to environmental and health crises1,2. In an increasingly polluted information ecosystem, understanding the factors underlying the generation and spread of misinformation is becoming a pressing scientific and societal challenge3. Here, we studied the global spread of (mis-)information on spiders using a high-resolution global database of online newspaper articles on spider–human interactions, covering stories of spider–human encounters and biting events published …

Differential Progression Of Unhealthy Dietinduced Hepatocellular Carcinoma In Obese And Non-Obese Mice, Emma Hymel, Elizabeth M. Vlock, Kurt W. Fisher, Parashevi A. Farazi

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Background

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) ranks first among liver diseases in Western countries. NAFLD is typically associated with obesity and diabetes, however it also develops in lean individuals without metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of lean NAFLD is 7 percent in the U.S. and 25–30 percent in some Asian countries. NAFLD starts with excess liver fat accumulation (NAFL), progresses to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The pathogenesis of lean NASH-HCC and how it differs from obese NASH-HCC is not well understood.

Methods

In this work, we generated a mouse model of lean and obese NASH-HCC using a …

Plant And Animal Body-Part Terms In Shiwulu Grammar: Classification, Nominalization, And Incorporation, Pilar M. Valenzuela

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"The goal of the present study is to offer an account of the principal constructions containing body-part terms in Shiwilu. These involve inanimate classifiers, three lexical nominalizers (instrumental, habitual agent, and resultative), and incorporated nouns and classifiers. While articles have previously been written addressing the Shiwilu system of classifiers and nominal incorporation (Valenzuela 2016, 2019, to appear), this chapter focuses on the role that body-part terms play in the grammar of the language."

Viagra Did Not Work, But Michael Jordan Still Made It: Trademark Policy Toward The Translation Of Foreign Marks In China, Jyh-An Lee, Lili Yang Aug 2022

Viagra Did Not Work, But Michael Jordan Still Made It: Trademark Policy Toward The Translation Of Foreign Marks In China, Jyh-An Lee, Lili Yang

Duke Law & Technology Review

Most multinational enterprises (MNEs) register their original trademarks in Roman letters in China upon entering the Chinese market. However, many fail to develop and register corresponding Chinese marks because they do not understand local culture and consumers, overvalue consumers’ presumed brand loyalty, or neglect the accompanying trademark issues. This failure enables trademark squatters to register and hold the Chinese marks for ransom or local competitors to free ride on foreign marks using their Chinese translations or transliterations. This Article first introduces the complexity of translating a foreign mark into Chinese, which concerns complex linguistic, cultural, and business challenges. Based on …

Niche Overlap In Sympatric Rocio (Teleostei: Cichlidae) Of Guatemala, Cesar Estuardo Fuentes Montejo Aug 2022

Niche Overlap In Sympatric Rocio (Teleostei: Cichlidae) Of Guatemala, Cesar Estuardo Fuentes Montejo

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Rocio is a small genus of Neotropical freshwater fishes that is distributed in Atlantic drainages of northern Middle America. Two species in the genus exhibit sympatry in the Río Dulce basin (in Izabal, Guatemala), where one species is endemic (R. spinosissima), while the other only includes this area as part of a larger geographic range (R. octofasciata). Unfortunately, the ecology of these species has been poorly studied. This study sought to determine the ecological and morphological differences between these two closely related sympatric freshwater fishes. We hypothesized that R. octofasciata would exhibit greater ecological and morphological …

Temperature Effects On The Development Of The Axial Skeleton And Body Shape In Astyanax Mexicanus (Teleostei: Characidae), Joseph David Forberg Aug 2022

Temperature Effects On The Development Of The Axial Skeleton And Body Shape In Astyanax Mexicanus (Teleostei: Characidae), Joseph David Forberg

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Humans are causing large-scale changes in environmental conditions across the planet including in temperature. Changes in the environmental conditions can lead to phenotypic changes in ectotherms that affect adaptively important traits like body shape and the axial skeleton. Previous studies have shown that temperature changes during development significantly affects body shape and vertebral number in the Mexican tetra Astyanax mexicanus. How these changes arise early in development is not clear. In this study, I examine how changes in developmental temperature affect body shape in larval and juvenile fish, the order of ossification of elements of the axial skeleton, the size …

Characterization Of A Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia Bacteriophage, Edward Eshoo Aug 2022

Characterization Of A Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia Bacteriophage, Edward Eshoo

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a ubiquitous Gram-negative, multidrug resistant, opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes various infections in humans. Recently, the use of bacteriophages as therapeutic agents, has gained interest as an alternative to traditional antibiotics. This thesis describes the isolation, purification, and characterization of S. maltophilia bacteriophage Bfi2 and discusses its activity against related, and often co-isolated, bacterial pathogens. Amplification of the phage resulted in clear, well-defined plaques and a titer of 1.73 ± 0.38 x 1011 PFU/ml. Bfi2 demonstrated the ability to lyse 55% of the S. maltophilia strains tested, suggesting that it has a moderate host range. However, the …

Seasonality Of Precipitation In The Southwestern United States During The Late Pleistocene Inferred From Stable Isotopes In Herbivore Tooth Enamel, Matthew J. Kohn, Kathleen B. Springer, Jeffrey S. Pigati, Linda M. Reynard, Amanda E. Drewicz, Justin Crevier, Eric Scott Aug 2022

Seasonality Of Precipitation In The Southwestern United States During The Late Pleistocene Inferred From Stable Isotopes In Herbivore Tooth Enamel, Matthew J. Kohn, Kathleen B. Springer, Jeffrey S. Pigati, Linda M. Reynard, Amanda E. Drewicz, Justin Crevier, Eric Scott

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The late Pleistocene was a climatically dynamic period, with abrupt shifts between cool-wet and warmdry conditions. Increased effective precipitation supported large pluvial lakes and long-lived spring ecosystems in valleys and basins throughout the western and southwestern U.S., but the source and seasonality of the increased precipitation are debated. Increases in the proportions of C4/(C4+ C3) grasses in the diets of large grazers have been ascribed both to increases in summer precipitation and lower atmospheric CO2 levels. Here we present stable carbon and oxygen isotope data from tooth enamel of late Pleistocene herbivores recovered …
