Problems And Suggestions To Improve Pronunciation Skills Of English Language Learners In China, Yi Fang
Problems And Suggestions To Improve Pronunciation Skills Of English Language Learners In China, Yi Fang
Master's Projects and Capstones
This project is based on the input hypothesis theoretical framework. The literature review explores the importance of pronunciation in English communication, problems with pronunciation and what causes them will be talked about for people learning English. Lastly, since the goal of this field project is to help English language learners in China improve their pronunciation, the third theme is about how to solve pronunciation problems and what learners need. One of the conclusions is that Chinese language learners' performance in the English language is significantly influenced by motivation, attitudes, parental support, openness to communication, and other linguistic and nonlinguistic factors. …

Fertility Considerations In Prescribing Hormonal Contraceptives In Individuals With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Andrea M. Reichle, Justin Gambini
Fertility Considerations In Prescribing Hormonal Contraceptives In Individuals With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Andrea M. Reichle, Justin Gambini
Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a highly prevalent endocrine disorder and the most common cause of infertility among females of reproductive age.1 While the name “polycystic ovary syndrome” implies people diagnosed with PCOS have numerous cysts on their ovaries, this is not always the case. Clinicians currently use the Rotterdam criteria to diagnose PCOS.2 These criteria include: irregular periods/anovulatory cycles, clinical or biochemical signs of androgen excess (acne, hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, etc.), and numerous ovarian cysts seen on imaging.2 A diagnosis of PCOS can be made when at least two of three criteria are met.2 As this has become a …

Faculty Research 2022
We describe a pipeline for optimized and streamlined multiplexed immunofluorescence-guided laser capture microdissection allowing the harvest of individual cells based on their phenotype and tissue localization for transcriptomic analysis with next-generation RNA sequencing. Here, we analyze transcriptomes of CD3+ T cells, CD14+ monocytes/macrophages, and melanoma cells in non-dissociated metastatic melanoma tissue. While this protocol is described for melanoma tissues, we successfully applied it to human tonsil, skin, and breast cancer tissues as well as mouse lung tissues. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Martinek et al. (2022).
A Higher Synthesis: The Problem Of The Monument And A Radical Dr. King, A. E. Thibus
A Higher Synthesis: The Problem Of The Monument And A Radical Dr. King, A. E. Thibus
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
This paper attempts to tackle state revisionism of monumental figures in American history through the case of Martin Luther King Jr., a radical who has been reimagined and whitewashed through conservative efforts for political purposes. I use examples of other historically revised prominent figures by the state to demonstrate the phenomenon. King's case can be connected to Derrick Bell and Critical Race Theory (CRT), an obscure legal study and fellow victim of conservative revisionism. I explore the history of CRT and show how the backsliding of the United States government coincides with a factitious honoring of diversity through cleansed figures …

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This essay explores investigative deceptions, intentional lies used to gather information that is in the public interest, across different areas of law. In some contexts, such falsehoods are viewed as producing great social benefits. For example, civil rights laws embrace intentional lies by testers to smoke out discriminatory conduct. Under federal labor law, union 'salts' are allowed to hide their identity and acquire jobs with employers whose workers they wish to organize. In most cases, law enforcement officers may engage in elaborate subterfuges when operating 'stings' and interrogating witnesses. In these contexts, the law permits a person to lie in …
Assessments Of Water Chemistry And Fish Community Structure In The Buffalo Creek Watershed, Tributary To The Allegheny River In Armstrong And Butler Counties, Pennsylvania, Kathleen Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Buffalo Creek watershed has experienced water quality impairments for various reasons, including but not limited to, agricultural influence, abandoned mine drainage (AMD), on-site wastewater malfunction, and stormwater. The source and cause of the most prevalent impaired areas remains unknown. The goal of this study was to analyze water chemistry using state water quality standards and mass ratio analysis, then to conduct fish community analysis. We found toxic metal pollution across the watershed, with iron, cadmium, copper, and selenium frequently exceeding criteria. We determined which streams are polluted by resource extraction activities by conducting mass ratio analysis. We found conventional …

Spreadsheets And Spaceships: How The Outer Worlds Critiques Corporatocracy, Colonialism And Revolution, Trevor R. Mcnally
Political Science Student Papers and Posters
With limitations of reality it is difficult for a Political Scientist to explore theoretical government establishments. Multi-media publications allow for the exploration of such governments which may never come to be. The video game “The Outer Worlds” by developer Obsidian Games does just that. Throughout the game the philosophy of Corporatocracy, colonialism and revolution is displayed in an explorative format allowing for a deeper insight into this governmental system. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the fictional government “Halcyon Holdings Corporation” and their control over the colonial planetary system of Halcyon.

Intervention: This DNP QI project implemented a safety intervention for HHCs, including nurses, aides, medical social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and …
Human Composting Is Changing The Landscape Of Death Care (Literally) — And It Could Be Legal In New York State As Soon As Next Year, Rachael Robertson
Human Composting Is Changing The Landscape Of Death Care (Literally) — And It Could Be Legal In New York State As Soon As Next Year, Rachael Robertson
Capstones
Soon New Yorkers might have a new option for end of life care: Natural Organic Reduction, or human composting. Rather than being buried or cremated, New Yorkres might have the option of having their body composted and turned into soil as an environmentally friendly burial alternative. A bill legalizing Natural Organic Reduction in NYS and setting regulations similar to cremation is sitting on Governor Hochul's desk. Death, remembrance, and disposition are especially difficult in New York City, where there is not enough cemetery space for the number of people who die annually. Through audio, data, and print, I explore how …

Raj Karega Khalsa! - The Evolution Of The Sikh Identity, Vineet Mehmi
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Generally, religion has served as a method of creating a unique identity and history for many groups across history. This concept is especially true for the Sikh community, to the point that they have carved their own niche across the different places they inhabit in the world, whether that be their homeland of Panjab or their extensive population in places like Canada or the United Kingdom. However, this expansion and development of their culture did not come without a cost, formed through countless battles, martyrdom, and revolutions. Chardi Kala, a foundational idea in Sikhi that refers to eternal optimism even …
The Ethical Imperative Of Inclusion In Healthcare Innovation: Scaling And Sustaining Digital Health Equity, Lukas E. Chandler
The Ethical Imperative Of Inclusion In Healthcare Innovation: Scaling And Sustaining Digital Health Equity, Lukas E. Chandler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the harm of digital health exclusion. Excluded groups could not benefit from virtual care due to device access gaps, broadband connectivity, and digital and language literacy levels. A lack of engagement with historically excluded populations in digital health innovation is an ethical harm and a maleficent form of social exclusion. Digital tools in healthcare delivery represent more than just a strategy for promoting health equity; they signify an opportunity to address health inequities in the health technology design process.
The historical focus of healthcare ethics on bedside decision-making issues largely explains why the field lacks concerted …

The focus of the study was on the ever-dynamic landscape between modern analytically-informed practitioners and their clients in psychotherapeutic exchange(s) that the practitioners believed encompassed joining and/or mirroring interventions. Participants were six experienced practitioners who described their clinical work as being informed by modern psychoanalysis and who have engaged or were currently engaging in individual psychotherapy with a client. …
Redefining Safety: A Reproductive Justice Ethics Of Care Approach To Maternal Health, Elizabeth Balskus
Redefining Safety: A Reproductive Justice Ethics Of Care Approach To Maternal Health, Elizabeth Balskus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will argue for the adoption of a multi-dimensional concept of safety in healthcare to include emotional, psychological and communal health. It will then illustrate how this concept of safety is foundational to a dignity-enhancing ethics of care approach that finds its normative grounding in Reproductive Justice and human capabilities, given that both patient and provider need to feel safe in order to fully engage in a dialogical-interpretive process of care and that caring efforts must strive to be equitable on both interpersonal and structural levels. This framework will then be applied to maternal health, showing how an approach …

Situating Heirloom Presence Within The Family Narrative: That Is/Was Then, This Is/Was Now, Rachel Savorelli
Situating Heirloom Presence Within The Family Narrative: That Is/Was Then, This Is/Was Now, Rachel Savorelli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intramundane objects often become “intergenerational transfers of contaminated objects,” commonly known as heirlooms (Belk 151; Heisley and Cours 425; Holmes). Rather than priceless possessions, heirlooms are mostly ordinary objects, such as photographs and gardening tools. Regardless of rarity or monetary value, as familial artifacts, heirlooms compel an ethic of responsibility. For this project, the term “heirlooming” is a performance of communicative practices of story-telling, ritualizing, and kin-keeping that contribute to heirloom preservation and continuation. A narrative ethics background structures family communication to both make meaning and make sense of ongoing and changing practices across generations. Heirlooms situated within family narratives …
Computational Symmetric Grain Boundary Energy Of Thorium Dioxide, Brendan J. Carroll
Computational Symmetric Grain Boundary Energy Of Thorium Dioxide, Brendan J. Carroll

This study aims to do computational experiments on Thorium Dioxide (a potential new nuclear fuel source) to look for the lowest grain boundary energy and what the effect of grain boundary conditions on the energy. Different orientations of the materials grain boundary were modeled and molecular dynamic …
Advancing Fluorescent Contrast Agent Recovery Methods For Surgical Guidance Applications, Brook Kennedy Byrd
Advancing Fluorescent Contrast Agent Recovery Methods For Surgical Guidance Applications, Brook Kennedy Byrd
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) utilizes fluorescent contrast agents and specialized optical instruments to assist surgeons in intraoperatively identifying tissue-specific characteristics, such as perfusion, malignancy, and molecular function. In doing so, FGS represents a powerful surgical navigation tool for solving clinical challenges not easily addressed by other conventional imaging methods. With growing translational efforts, major hurdles within the FGS field include: insufficient tools for understanding contrast agent uptake behaviors, the inability to image tissue beyond a couple millimeters, and lastly, performance limitations of currently-approved contrast agents in accurately and rapidly labeling disease. The developments presented within this thesis aim to address such …
The Process Of Growing In Small Firms: Exploring Dialectic Adjustments To Nonroutine Disruption, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass, Mary Uhl-Bien
The Process Of Growing In Small Firms: Exploring Dialectic Adjustments To Nonroutine Disruption, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass, Mary Uhl-Bien
Management Faculty Publications
Studies examining small firm growth have suggested that growth is complex due to the multitude of internal and external factors that disrupt it. However, in focusing mainly on external factors and paying less attention to internal factors, the process of growing – or what is happening inside a small firm as it grows – remains undertheorized. Using findings from a real-time case study of a small firm and insights from the dialectical perspective, we develop a theoretical model that illustrates growth as a dynamic process occurring through dialectic adjustments in response to disruptions that cannot be resolved with routine practices. …

Powers And The Metaphysics Of Fundamentality, Benjamin Cook
Powers And The Metaphysics Of Fundamentality, Benjamin Cook
Dissertations - ALL
In this dissertation, I address the question of whether ground, the relation that obtains between entities e1...en and a further entity e when e ontologically depends on, and is metaphysically explained by, e1...en, should be understood causally and, if so, whether this has any substantive implications. I answer both in the affirmative. I argue that ground and causation are similar enough to motivate characterizing ground as a special kind of causation, and that this can be done if we adopt a powers-theoretic account of causation. Moreover, I argue that the resultant view of ground, what I call “powerful, existential causation,” …
Assessing The Mental Health Of Women At The Intersection Of Intimate Partner Violence And Animal Cruelty: Personal And Population Level Risk Factors For Co-Victimization, Alaina M. Beauchamp
Assessing The Mental Health Of Women At The Intersection Of Intimate Partner Violence And Animal Cruelty: Personal And Population Level Risk Factors For Co-Victimization, Alaina M. Beauchamp
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
One predictor of intimate partner violence (IPV) occurring in the home is pet abuse. The high prevalence of pet cruelty among IPV relationship can create a significant barrier to seeking help due to the inability to bring the pet or concern for the pet’s wellbeing. This human-animal bond is a more common source of emotional support among victims with experiences of pet abuse, as opposed to women whose pets had not been abused. This study 1) explored the relationship between victims of IPV and their pets, the dynamics and characteristics of situations of co-victimization (i.e., abuse of both a human …
