Metabolomic Analysis Of Trypanosoma Congolense And Leishmania Mexicana Treated With Selected Antiparasitic Drugs And In Silico Modelling Of Potential Drug Targets, Laurah Nyasita Ondari

All Master’s Theses

Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is a devastating parasitic disease caused by a variety of haemoflagellate extracellular protozoa of the genus Trypanosoma. It is endemic in 37 of the 55 countries in Africa and is transmitted by the obligate blood feeder of the genus Glossina. It affects both domestic and wild animals causing huge economic losses and severe health problems. Chemotherapeutic and prophylactic agents such as Isometamidium chloride (ISM) are used to prevent the progression of AAT in endemic areas. These agents face limitations such as resistance, toxicity, low efficacy, and unknown mechanisms of action. Therefore, it is crucial to develop …

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Publications

Most traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) during military deployment or training are clinically “mild” and frequently caused by non-impact blast exposures. Experimental models were developed to reproduce the biological consequences of high-intensity blasts causing moderate to severe brain injuries. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of low-intensity blast (LIB)-induced neurological deficits have been understudied. This review provides perspectives on primary blast-induced mild TBI models and discusses translational aspects of LIB exposures as defined by standardized physical parameters including overpressure, impulse, and shock wave velocity. Our mouse LIB-exposure model, which reproduces deployment-related scenarios of open-field blast (OFB), caused neurobehavioral changes, including reduced exploratory activities, …

Saddling Up For Success: Rope Or Wrangle? Comparing Experiential Learning Programs For Developing Emotional Intelligence In The Workplace, Thomasa Sanchez Jan 2022

Saddling Up For Success: Rope Or Wrangle? Comparing Experiential Learning Programs For Developing Emotional Intelligence In The Workplace, Thomasa Sanchez

Dissertations from the Executive Doctorate in Business Administration Program

Emotional intelligence is characterized as the ability to jointly use intelligence and emotions to enhance reasoning. Corporate trainers have employed experiential learning methods to strengthen emotional competencies and often utilize experiential learning methods that involve challenge course programs that incorporate ropes and belay systems. A novel training method, equine-assisted learning, has recently gained traction and reportedly leverages the empathic nature of horses to enhance learning. This study had three primary purposes: (a) investigate the impact of a 1-day equine-assisted learning program upon emotional intelligence as compared to a 1-day challenge course program in a workplace population; (b) examine psychological safety …

A Study Protocol To Prepare An Rbd Protein For Vaccine Against Covid-19, Z.M.G. Sarwar Jahangir, Arleta Helena Marnik

Publications and Research

Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is a global threat to humans and the world’s economy. Effective and safe vaccines against this virus are essential to control and eradicate the pandemic. The currently applied vaccines carry SARS-CoV-2 spike-protein mRNA/cDNA. These vaccines go through several cellular processes in the recipients for producing antigens. On the contrary, the SARS-CoV-2 RBD (receptor binding domain)-protein is an antigen. It will directly stimulate antibody production against SARS-CoV-2. Hence, we propose to produce SARS-CoV-2 RBD-protein as a fast acting, effective and safe vaccine.

Methods: We propose to reconstruct a plasmid carrying three types of DNA sequences: RBD cDNA, FP …

Inflammatory Response To Sleep Fragmentation In Skeletal, Cardiac, And Smooth Muscle Tissues In Female Mice, Patton Allen Jan 2022

Inflammatory Response To Sleep Fragmentation In Skeletal, Cardiac, And Smooth Muscle Tissues In Female Mice, Patton Allen

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Sleep is a critical process that the body undergoes. When sleep is interrupted, so that an individual is awakened for some period before going back into sleep, the sleep can be described as fragmented. Studies in the past have shown that sleep fragmentation (SF) promotes an inflammatory environment, especially in the brain and peripheral tissue. However, studies have not been conducted to observe inflammatory responses in muscle. To examine this, C57BL/6J female mice were subjected to either a control group (no SF) or a SF group which involved using an automated SF chamber to disrupt sleep every 2 min over …

The Impacts Of Reward Salience On Rate Of Learning & Extinction, Elise Crause, Mykayla Spurlin, Davis Eddleman, Lindsey Mathews, Sarah Headapohl

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Salience of rewards is a critical component to learning and motivation, without salience, motivation would be insubstantial (Berridge, 2012). This study aims to investigate the relationship between reward salience and rate of learning. Rate of learning will be measured by the number of correct lever presses within twenty-to-twenty-five-minute periods. Extinction will additionally be measured to further examine the impact reward salience has on learning. Using standard operant chambers, six female food-restricted rats were trained to lever press the left front lever to obtain a food reward. Rats were separated into two groups, (n=3 per group), an experimental group of rats …

Justified, Evidently False Belief, Levi Yakuber Jan 2022

Justified, Evidently False Belief, Levi Yakuber

Bouwsma Paper Contest

In The Theory of Epistemic Rationality, Foley writes that the framing goal of epistemic rationality is, “now to believe those propositions which are true and now not to believe those propositions which are false,” with respect to non-trivial propositions.1 This “nowness” for truth distinguishes epistemic rationality from other domains of rationality, on the basis that epistemic rationality is concerned only with now believing what is true, regardless of what believing the truth will mean for one’s other goals as a person. Though very restrictive, this is the founding framework of the epistemic domain. Epistemic rationality being concerned only with the …

Rethinking Higher Education Models: Towards A New Education Paradigm For The Un 2030 Agenda For Sustainable Development, Jon-Hans Coetzer, Lucia Morales, Cormac Macmahon

Papers

The United Nations 2030 Agenda unfolded a comprehensive package of Sustainable Development Goals that seek global cooperation, participation, and coordinated efforts to 2030 for the betterment of humanity within the ecological constraints of the planet. However, it has become evident that the agenda is very ambitious and afflicted by a lack of solid governance principles vital to ensuring the successful achievement of the goals and targets. This paper offers critical insights into the pivotal role of higher education in promoting and implementing the goals. We argue that there is a need to raise awareness of the goals and educate relevant …

An Adaptive Hegselmann–Krause Model Of Opinion Dynamics, Phousawanh Peaungvongpakdy Jan 2022

An Adaptive Hegselmann–Krause Model Of Opinion Dynamics, Phousawanh Peaungvongpakdy

HMC Senior Theses

Models of opinion dynamics have been used to understand how the spread
of information in a population evolves, such as the classical Hegselmann–
Krause model (Hegselmann and Krause, 2002). One extension of the model
has been used to study the impact of media ideology on social media
networks (Brooks and Porter, 2020). In this thesis, we explore various
models of opinions and propose our own model, which is an adaptive
version of the Hegselmann–Krause model. The adaptive version implements
the social phenomenon of homophily—the tendency for like-minded agents to
associate together. This is done by having agents dissolve connections …

Re-Inventing Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Therapeutics, Nishant S. Kulkarni Jan 2022

Re-Inventing Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Therapeutics, Nishant S. Kulkarni

Theses and Dissertations

Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) is a rare malignancy affecting the mesothelial cells lining major physiological tissues. There is currently no cure for MPM and there is a growing need to bolster the therapeutic arsenal for MPM management. With that in mind, multiple small molecules were screened against MPM models, in-vitro, and it was revealed that Niclosamide (Niclo), an anthelmintic drug, was the most potent against MPM (IC50 values between 1.2-2.2 M) with the ability to inhibit colony formation in MPM cells and is efficacious against 3D tumor models. However, small molecule systemic therapy has resulted in negligible improvement in patient survival …

Evolving Evolutionary Psychology, Darcia Narvaez, David S. Moore, David C. Witherington, Timothy I. Vandiver, Robert Lickliter

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Which evolutionary theory can best benefit psychological theory, research, and application? The most well-known school of evolutionary psychology has a narrow conceptual perspective (a.k.a., “Narrow Evolutionary Psychology” or NEP). Proponents of NEP have long argued that their brand of evolutionary psychology represents a full-fledged scientific revolution, with Buss (2020) recently likening NEP’s scientific impact to that of a Copernican or Darwinian paradigm shift. However, NEP stands on two traditions that are now the subjects of serious debate and revision: the neo-Darwinian adaptationist framework within evolutionary biology, and the computationalist “mind-as-computer” framework within cognitive science. Although NEP calls itself revolutionary, the …

Leveraging Developmental Psychology To Evaluate Artificial Intelligence, David S. Moore, Lisa M. Oakes, Victoria L. Romero, Koleen C. Mccrink

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems do not exhibit human-like common sense. The principles and practices of experimental psychology – specifically, work on infant cognition – can be used to develop and test AIs, providing insight into the building blocks of common sense. Here, we describe how the evaluation team for DARPA’s Machine Common Sense program is applying conceptual content, experimental design techniques, and analysis tools used in the field of infant cognitive development to the field of AI evaluation.

Impact Of Introductory Physics For The Life Sciences In A Senior Biology Capstone Course, Benjamin D. Geller , '01, Jack Rubien , '20, Sara Hiebert Burch, Catherine Hirshfeld Crouch

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

A goal of introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS) curricula is to prepare students to effectively use physical models and quantitative reasoning in biological and medical settings. To assess whether this goal is being met, we conducted a longitudinal study of the impact of IPLS on student work in later biology and chemistry courses. We report here on one part of that study, a comparison of written responses by students with different physics backgrounds on a diffusion task administered in a senior biology capstone course. We observed differences in student reasoning that were found to be associated with prior or …

Gender Differences In High School Students’ Perceptions Of Math And Science Identity, Self-Efficacy, And Utility, Lauren Mauel Jan 2022

Gender Differences In High School Students’ Perceptions Of Math And Science Identity, Self-Efficacy, And Utility, Lauren Mauel

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative dissertation examined the differences between young men and women’s perceptions of mathematics and science identity, self-efficacy, and utility. There are gender norms and stereotypes that impact identity, self-efficacy, and perceived utility of mathematics and science. The secondary data analyzed were drawn from the follow-up High School Longitudinal Survey (HSLS:09). The survey was administered to 20,594 11th-grade students enrolled at 904 eligible public, charter, and private schools from all states and the District of Columbia. The study investigated whether there are gender-based statistically significant (p < 0.05) differences in 11th grade students’ perceptions of mathematics and science identity, mathematics and science self-efficacy, and mathematics and science utility. The results of the study suggest that there are statistically significant differences between the genders in mathematics identity, science identity, mathematics self-efficacy, and science self-efficacy, but not statistically significant differences in mathematics utility and science utility. Continued research could prove useful to continue analyzing the gender gaps present.

Ifn-Γ Transforms The Transcriptomic Landscape And Triggers Myeloid Cell Hyperresponsiveness To Cause Lethal Lung Injury, Atul K. Verma, Michael Mckelvey, Md Bashir Uddin, Sunil Palani, Meng Niu, Christopher Bauer, Shengjun Shao, Keer Sun

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is an inflammatory disease that is associated with high mortality but no specific treatment. Our understanding of initial events that trigger ARDS pathogenesis is limited. We have developed a mouse model of inflammatory lung injury by influenza and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) coinfection plus daily antibiotic therapy. Using this pneumonic ARDS model, here we show that IFN-γ receptor signaling drives inflammatory cytokine storm and lung tissue damage. By single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis, we demonstrate that IFN-γ signaling induces a transcriptional shift in airway immune cells, particularly by upregulating macrophage and monocyte expression of genes …

Profiling The Plasmid Conjugation Potential Of Urinary Escherichia Coli, Cesar Montelongo Hernandez, Catherine Putonti, Alan J. Wolfe

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Escherichia coli is often associated with urinary tract infection (UTI). Antibiotic resistance in E. coli is an ongoing challenge in managing UTI. Extrachromosomal elements – plasmids – are vectors for clinically relevant traits, such as antibiotic resistance, with conjugation being one of the main methods for horizontal propagation of plasmids in bacterial populations. Targeting of conjugation components has been proposed as a strategy to curb the spread of plasmid-borne antibiotic resistance. Understanding the types of conjugative systems present in urinary E. coli isolates is fundamental to assessing the viability of this strategy. In this study, we profile two well-studied conjugation …

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)

Purpose: The purpose of this review is to explore whether plant-based (vegan) diets result in greater reductions in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) than high-fat carbohydrate-restricted (ketogenic) diets in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Search Criteria: PubMed and Cochrane library databases were systematically searched for all relevant studies using MeSH terms (("diet, high fat" AND "diet, carbohydrate restricted") OR "diet, ketogenic" OR "diet, vegan") AND "diabetes mellitus, type 2/therapy". Limiting the research to meta-analyses and systematic reviews narrowed the results to six articles. One systematic review was excluded because it examined the effects of ketogenic diets on the quality …
