UNLABELLED: Clonal hematopoiesis resulting from the enhanced fitness of mutant hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) associates with both favorable and unfavorable health outcomes related to the types of mature mutant blood cells produced, but how this lineage output is regulated is unclear. Using a mouse model of a clonal hematopoiesis-associated mutation, DNMT3AR882/+ (Dnmt3aR878H/+), we found that aging-induced TNFα signaling promoted the selective advantage of mutant HSCs and stimulated the production of mutant B lymphoid cells. The genetic loss of the TNFα receptor TNFR1 ablated the selective advantage of mutant HSCs without altering their lineage output, whereas the loss of TNFR2 resulted …

The invasion of pathogenic fungi poses nonnegligible threats to the human health and agricultural industry. This work exploited a family of hydroxyethyl naphthalimides as novel antifungal species with synergistic potential of chemical and dynamic treatment to combat the fungal resistance. These prepared naphthalimides showed better antifungal potency than fluconazole towards some tested fungi including

Discrete computational models known as cellular automata (CA) utilize discrete spatial cells, each existing in one of a set of possible states at any given moment. Transition rules specify how a given cell’s state evolves in subsequent time steps and is dependent on the states of the given cell’s neighborhood of surrounding cells. A cellular automaton model can also account for the influence of other external or physical factors on the evolution of a given cell’s state. These capabilities afforded by CA models make it an ideal tool to simulate the propagation of wildfires. One specific study carried out by …

Biotechnology engineering is a complex domain that explores the use of living systems and organisms to develop products or any technological application that uses biological systems and living organisms to make or modify products or processes for specific use in the production of raw food, feed, and food processing. English as a foreign language in biotechnology engineering reflects the complexity in terms of content knowledge, language skills, and strategies characteristic of biotechnology. The article focuses on the knowledge and skills a biotechnology engineer should acquire with the emphasis on communicative language ability in English as a foreign language for specific …

Reperfusion Injury In Acute Myocardial Infarction Shock- Role Of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices, Finn Gustafsson
Reperfusion Injury In Acute Myocardial Infarction Shock- Role Of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices, Finn Gustafsson
Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics
The efficacy of mechanical circulatory support in acute myocardial infarction is dependent upon the size of the infarct. If applied early, mechanical support to reduce reperfusion injury appears to be effective in reducing infarct size in animal studies. The optimal timing of reperfusion is uncertain and requires further investigation. Efficient unloading appears to be essential in increasing the efficacy of the type of mechanical support and may favor one over another.

Overflow Tests On Grass-Covered Embankments At The Living Lab Hedwige-Prosperpolder: An Overview, André R. Koelewijn, Stephan J.H. Rikkert, Patrik Peeters, Davy Depreiter, Myron Van Damme, Wouter Zomer
Protections Conference
In regions with a temperate climate, a well-maintained grass sod on a clay layer is considered a reliable protection for dams and dikes. In the Living Lab Hedwige-Prosperpolder, on the left bank of the Scheldt river straddling the border between Belgium and the Netherlands, a series of 27 overflow tests with a purpose-built overflow generator has been executed to determine the strength of the protective layer against erosion at various conditions. The goal of this paper is to inform on the executed test program and the initial results. From the results, it was concluded that in general, a high-quality grass …

Recent Case Histories Of Cascade Failures And Overflowing Events Of Embankment Dams, Alexius Vogel, Jean-Robert Courivaud, Katarzyna Jarecka
Protections Conference
Excessive rainfall and extensive flooding within the context of a changing environment show the fact that resistance to overflowing erosion of embankment dams needs to be better assessed because of the increasing number of dam failures caused by overflowing, implying the necessity of a reaction to this kind of challenges. Better understandings of the embankment failure processes and the dominant parameters affecting these kinds of failures are necessary for predicting and modeling the breach processes. Acquiring this better understanding of the physical processes and a numerical prediction capability requires progressing in parallel in laboratory and field test investigations of embankment …

A Qualitative Study Of Mindfulness, Sustainable Consumption And Consumer Well-Being And Their Interrelationships, Saba Resnik
Economic and Business Review
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental degradation, negative economic consequences and social injustices caused by the unsustainable consumption of clothing products. Overall, therefore, sustainability requires more sustainable production of fashion apparel products as well as more responsible consumption behaviours by individual consumers. To gain a clearer picture of the concepts of mindfulness, sustainable consumption and consumer well-being and their interrelationships, in-depth interviews were conducted with individual consumers. The results of this study indicate a positive relationship between these three concepts as well as an overlap between the concepts of mindfulness and well-being.
Exploring The Strategic Elements Of Backers’ Persuasion In Reward-Based Crowdfunding, Sabina Grižančič, Mateja Drnovšek
Exploring The Strategic Elements Of Backers’ Persuasion In Reward-Based Crowdfunding, Sabina Grižančič, Mateja Drnovšek
Economic and Business Review
In this paper we investigate the strategic elements that project founders' use in reward-based crowdfunding campaigns to achieve a higher level of persuasion. Exploration of these elements not only provides insights into an entrepreneur's experience with crowdfunding but also provides material for comparing results reported by other (quantitative) studies. We conducted an empirical study with 13 Kickstarter project founders through in-depth, semi-structured interviews which were analysed through a reflexive thematic analysis approach. Drawing from our findings, we propose four strategic elements that founders use to persuade backers and achieve success drawing from individual-level experiences and observations.
Ethically Minded Consumer Behavior Of Apparel: An Examination Of Antecedents And Consequences, Maja Hrlec Gorše, Mateja Kos Koklič, Anže Zalokar
Ethically Minded Consumer Behavior Of Apparel: An Examination Of Antecedents And Consequences, Maja Hrlec Gorše, Mateja Kos Koklič, Anže Zalokar
Economic and Business Review
This research examines the ethically minded consumer behavior (EMCB) and its antecedents and consequences in the context of ethical clothes. Its objective is to test the relationships among the reasons for and against buying, subjective knowledge, EMCB and intention to purchase ethical clothes. The authors use survey data from 280 consumers to test the conceptual model. Support is provided for the majority of the hypothesized relationships: reasons for buying and subjective knowledge positively and reasons against buying negatively affect EMCB, and EMCB in turn positively influences the intention to purchase. Additionally, reasons against buying decrease the intention. The study also …
