Evolving Tropical Cyclone Tracks In The North Atlantic In A Warming Climate, Andra J. Garner, Robert Kopp, Benjamin Horton Dec 2021

Evolving Tropical Cyclone Tracks In The North Atlantic In A Warming Climate, Andra J. Garner, Robert Kopp, Benjamin Horton

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Tropical cyclone (TC) track characteristics in a changing climate remain uncertain. Here, we investigate the genesis, tracks, and termination of >35,000 synthetic TCs traveling within 250 km of New York City (NYC) from the pre‐industrial era (850–1800 CE) to the modern era (1970–2005 CE) to the future (2080–2100 CE). Under a very high‐emissions scenario (RCP8.5), TCs are more likely to form closer to the United States (U.S.) southeast coast (>15% increase), terminate in the northeastern Atlantic (>6% increase), and move most slowly along the U.S. Atlantic coast (>15% increase) from the pre‐industrial to future. Under our modeled …

Controlled Release Of Multiple Therapeutics From Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses For Post-Cataract/Post-Refractive Surgery And Uveitis Treatment., Stephen A Dipasquale, Biaggio Uricoli, Matthew C Dicerbo, Thea L Brown, Mark Byrne

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

PURPOSE: This work demonstrates seven-day controlled and extended in vitro physiological flow dual release of multiple post-ocular surgery therapeutics from extended-wear contact lenses as a dropless alternative for treatment of uveitis and corneal inflammation, pain, and infection. Lens replacement each week optimizes treatment matching patient recall time with the ability to increase or decrease dosage.

METHODS: Lenses were synthesized using molecular imprinting to create lenses with macromolecular memory for diclofenac sodium (DS) and dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DMSP), as well as bromfenac sodium (BS) and moxifloxacin (MOX). Drug uptake and release were analyzed, and physical properties were measured and compared to …

Formalizing A High-Risk Obstetrical Initiative: Focus—Hypertensive Disorders, Elena Vulgamott Rodrigue Dec 2021

Formalizing A High-Risk Obstetrical Initiative: Focus—Hypertensive Disorders, Elena Vulgamott Rodrigue

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Background: Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy have a detrimental effect on maternal and fetal outcomes, causing low birth weights, preterm births, and stillbirths. During pregnancy, hypertensive disorders affect up to 13% of all pregnancies and make up 10% of all maternal mortality in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019). Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project was to implement and standardize a high-risk obstetrical initiative for hypertensive mothers. Summary of Evidence: Data suggest that increased education and increased surveillance for high-risk obstetric patients decreases the need for obstetric services and decreases the evolution of hypertensive …

Anti-Racist Pedagogy: A Practical Means Of Building Bonds Between Marginalized Students And Instructors In The Composition Classroom, Santa-Victoria Pérez Dec 2021

Anti-Racist Pedagogy: A Practical Means Of Building Bonds Between Marginalized Students And Instructors In The Composition Classroom, Santa-Victoria Pérez

English (MA) Theses

Framed by the existing scholarship in anti-racist pedagogy, this thesis is inspired by Charise Pimentel and Octavio Pimentel’s dream of building coalitions with marginalized students, Steven Alvarez’s framework for academic biliteracy, and Marcos del Hierro’s advocacy for incorporating discussions about contentious social issues in the classroom. This research draws mainly from works by rhetoricians and compositionists of color who report that working through and pushing past the discomfort and tensions of politically charged topics in the classroom are crucial for an anti-racist writing program (Prendergast, 1998; Villanueva, 1999; Clary-Lemon, 2009; Inoue, 2015; García de Müeller and Ruiz, 2017). By reflecting …

Heidegger On The “Futural” Poet Rilke Poetizing The Essential Truth Of Being?, James Magrini Dec 2021

Heidegger On The “Futural” Poet Rilke Poetizing The Essential Truth Of Being?, James Magrini

Philosophy Scholarship

This essay poses and responds uniquely to the following crucial questions: Does Rilke’s poetry poetize the event of Being for Dasein? Does Rilke indicate that the human being can yet achieve such a mode of “historical” existence in relation to the Earth or the holy? Heidegger responds to the first query in the affirmative; Rilke does poetize this event, albeit through a “tempered” and somewhat traditional view of Western metaphysics. To the second query, it appears that Heidegger responds in a slightly cryptic and ambiguous manner, and to clarify this response, I turn to Heidegger’s interpretation of Rilke’s “Angel” as …

Integers And Polynomials With Integer Coefficients For High School Students, Gabriella Nowobilski Dec 2021

Integers And Polynomials With Integer Coefficients For High School Students, Gabriella Nowobilski

Mathematics Capstone Projects

Recently, many mathematics educators have tried to explore the potential for aspects of abstract algebra to improve the teaching of high school algebra. As a high school math teacher, I am specifically interested in how I can tie the ring theory in abstract algebra into a high school level algebra course. More precisely, this thesis concerns the possible application of the irreducibility of polynomials (with integer coefficients over rational field in high school algebra. We will explore the differences between a reducible polynomial and an irreducible polynomial. In detail, concepts such as the following will be explored and addressed: the …

Determining The Psychosocial Needs Of The Nurses Of Covid-19 Patients, Allison Stevens Dec 2021

Determining The Psychosocial Needs Of The Nurses Of Covid-19 Patients, Allison Stevens

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

Nurses are a vital element of the COVID-19 healthcare crisis and have been since the beginning of the COVID-19 response. The professional strain put on nurses included, but is not limited to: changing professional roles, rapidly changing policies and procedures, an influx of patients—particularly of high acuity, and change in workplace morale. However, nurses also had to carry the burdens of living as a member of society, family member, friend, community member, and above all, simply as a person surviving a pandemic themselves. With all of the stressors nurses have endured, it stands to reason that their psychosocial needs have …

Perceptions Of High Achieving High School Students Regarding The Professionalization Of Teaching And Their Interest In Becoming Teachers, Jonathan Crossley Dec 2021

Perceptions Of High Achieving High School Students Regarding The Professionalization Of Teaching And Their Interest In Becoming Teachers, Jonathan Crossley

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

This study was designed to highlight the factors that contribute to high-achieving high school students not deciding to join the teaching profession. There is growing evidence to indicate that the teaching profession is comprised mostly of educators in their first five years in the profession and educators with more than 25 years of teaching experience. Increasing numbers of educators are leaving the profession within their first five years in a classroom. On the other end of the spectrum, as teachers with more than 25 years of experience ultimately retire, the question remains about the viability of the profession for younger …

Social Inflation: Rising Tides In The Insurance Markets, Noah E. Heim Dec 2021

Social Inflation: Rising Tides In The Insurance Markets, Noah E. Heim

University Honors College

Social inflation, despite its relative recency, has been a strong concern for some of the largest insurance carriers in the world. With claims costs increasing across broad markets, especially in casualty markets, insurers are racing to find the reason why. Increased claims costs can result in a number of negative effects on both insurance carriers as well as insurances buyers. Social inflation seems to be a key driver of these increased costs. Doing a deep dive into the validity of this claim and studying some potential causes as well as markets in which social inflation is occurring has led to …

Oklahoma Public Comprehensive Universities: The President’S Role In Financial Management And Fundraising, Mark B. Shields Dec 2021

Oklahoma Public Comprehensive Universities: The President’S Role In Financial Management And Fundraising, Mark B. Shields

Journal of Research on the College President

Among the top challenges facing Oklahoma public comprehensive university presidents is the quest for adequate funding of their institutions, including adequate levels of support from state resources. Low levels of public support by the state have become a pattern, rather than an anomaly and statewide reductions in appropriations for higher education funding have had a disproportionate effect on Oklahoma’s public comprehensive universities because they have fewer diversified revenue sources. This pattern has forced presidents to become more adept at budgeting, financial management, fundraising, and finding the resources necessary for their institutions to not only be successful, but to simply survive. …

A Critical Examination Of Contemporary Legal Issues Important To College Presidents, Arleene Breaux, Jennifer M. Miles, John W. Murry Jr., G. David Gearhart

Journal of Research on the College President

This discussion provides a highlight of the legal dimensions that college presidents must consider in providing oversight for college operations. Many of these issues are driven by the behaviors of campus constituents, but several key legal issues are also the result of federal legislation and involvement in higher education.
