“Quietly Incomplete”: Academic Historians, Digital Archival Collections, And Historical Research In The Web Era, Donald Force, Bradley Wiles
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Since the early 1990s, archives institutions largely have approached digital archival collections with an “if we build it, they will come” mentality. But the extent and motivations of use for traditional and emerging patron groups are constantly evolving, and the factors or conditions that characterize use vary wildly in the web environment. As part of a broader study investigating how academic historians utilize and interact with digital archival collections, this paper details the findings of a pilot project involving a citation analysis, survey, and semi-structured interviews with academic historians from a medium-sized Carnegie Research 1 university. This limited exploratory study …

ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
Wear resistance is an invaluable performance metric for most metallic components found in mechanical systems. Our research focused on AR400, a steel alloy known for its wear resistance capabilities, in an effort to determine what factors might be attributed to its performance in wear applications. After establishing the processing techniques and resulting material structures that give AR400 such an edge in extreme wear conditions, our goal is to determine indicators of wear resistance that can be used to distinguish excellent wear resistant alloys from average or subpar performers against wear.

Wi-Sun Stabilization For Distributed Automation Gateways By Dynamically Controlling Acceptable Children Numbers, Lele Zhang, Iris Dai, Xue Yuan, Tonglin Yuan
Defensive Publications Series
Resilient mesh products (based on, for example, the Wireless Smart Utility Network (Wi-SUN) communication standard) have been available for many years and are widely used within Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Distributed Automation (DA) settings. A DA Gateway (which, for convenience, may be referred to herein as a ‘DAGW’) follows the AMI elements’ rules in a Wi-SUN network, but that is not highly efficient while forwarding a significant amount of the third-party traffic. The root cause of such inefficiency is that the child AMI elements are not aware of a change in the available resources in a DAGW. To address …

Ow-Detr: Open-World Detection Transformer, Akshita Gupta, Sanath Narayan, K.J. Joseph, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan, Mubarak Shah
Computer Vision Faculty Publications
Open-world object detection (OWOD) is a challenging computer vision problem, where the task is to detect a known set of object categories while simultaneously identifying unknown objects. Additionally, the model must incrementally learn new classes that become known in the next training episodes. Distinct from standard object detection, the OWOD setting poses significant challenges for generating quality candidate proposals on potentially unknown objects, separating the unknown objects from the background and detecting diverse unknown objects. Here, we introduce a novel end-to-end transformer-based framework, OW-DETR, for open-world object detection. The proposed OW-DETR comprises three dedicated components namely, attention-driven pseudo-labeling, novelty classification …

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications
Root-microbiome interactions are of central importance for plant performance and yield. A distinctive feature of legumes is that they engage in symbiosis with N2-fixing rhizobia. If and how the rhizobial symbiotic capacity modulates root-associated microbiomes are still not yet well understood. We determined root-associated microbiomes of soybean inoculated with wild type (WT) or a noeI mutant of Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA 110 by amplicon sequencing. UPLC-MS/MS was used to analyze root exudates. The noeI gene is responsible for fucose-methylation of Nod factor secreted by USDA 110 WT strain. Soybean roots inoculated with the noeI mutant showed a significant decrease …
