Exploitation Of Space And Patent Law: How The Current Legal System Ineffectively Protects Private Companies In The Commercial Space Industry, Malmen, Liz

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Over fifty years ago man first landed on the moon. Since then, outer space has become increasingly closer with the direction and development of the commercial space industry. What was once an exclusive government function is turning into a private business. It is no longer difficult to imagine the possibility of going to space when companies like SpaceX have launched private crews into orbit. However, encouraging technological advancements to support the commercial space industry requires adequate legal protections of such innovation. This can be challenging when international space law has had little growth since man was first on the moon, …

Development Of A 2d Numerical Model For Pollutant Transport Using Ftcs Scheme And Numerical Filter, Tias Ravena Maitsa, Qalbi Hafiyyan, Mohammad Bagus Adityawan, Ikha Magdalena, Arno Adi Kuntoro, Hadi Kardhana

Makara Journal of Technology

This study used the finite difference method to develop a numerical model for pollutant transport phenomenon simulation. Mathematically, the phenomenon is often described by the advection–diffusion differential equation, which is obtained from a combination of the continuity equation and Fick’s first law. The Forward Time Central Space (FTCS) scheme is one of the explicit finite difference methods and is used in this study to solve the model due to its simplicity in solving a differential equation. Yet, this method is currently unstable, which results in oscillations in the model. Thus, a numerical filter (Hansen) is added to the FTCS method …

Quantification Of Eccentricity In Stems Of Two Species Of Purshia, Lance S. Evans Dec 2021

Quantification Of Eccentricity In Stems Of Two Species Of Purshia, Lance S. Evans

Western North American Naturalist

Plants of Purshia tridentata and Purshia stansburyana, 2 shrub species from the western United States, naturally display eccentric stem growth. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively document stem eccentricity for these 2 species. Stem segments were obtained from 3 different plants of each species at locations in central Utah. Each stem was sawed into 8-mm sections and photographed for analysis. Every stem section was then marked at a 36° interval to produce 10 wedge-shaped sectors. The areas of each sector were determined and analyzed. Stem segment areas were about 40, 60, and 100 mm2 for stem …

Mistrust, Neighborhood Deprivation, And Telehealth Use In African Americans With Diabetes., Barry W. Rovner, Robin J. Casten, Anna Marie Chang, Judd E. Hollander, Kristin Rising

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

This study explored the relationship between trust in physicians and telehealth use during the COVID pandemic in 162 African Americans with diabetes. More than 90% of patients had internet-capable devices and internet service but only 61 patients (39%) had a telehealth visit. Compared to the latter, participants with no telehealth visits had less trust in physicians' ability to diagnose COVID, less trust in physicians' ability to treat via telehealth, and resided in more deprived neighborhoods. There were no differences in age, sex, education, nor literacy. For African Americans with diabetes, health disparities may increase unless fundamental issues such as trust …

Fabrication Of Advanced Materials For Chromatography, Sample Preparation, And Separations, And Accompanying Material Characterization, Dhananjay I. Patel

Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation primarily focuses on the fabrication of materials for solid phase microextraction (SPME) and separation devices. In my first project, I used direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) to prepare sputtered silicon coatings on fused silica fibers. These fibers were then subjected to the chemical vapor deposition of 6-phenyhexylsilane (6-PH) as a stationary phase. Six different types of fibers were made using two different throw distances (4 cm and 20 cm) and three different silicon thicknesses (0.5, 1.8, and 2.8 µm). These coatings were characterized by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), …

Weak Cayley Table Groups Of Crystallographic Groups, Rebeca Ann Paulsen Dec 2021

Weak Cayley Table Groups Of Crystallographic Groups, Rebeca Ann Paulsen

Theses and Dissertations

Let G be a group. A weak Cayley table isomorphism $\phi$: G $\rightarrow$ G is a bijection satisfying two conditions: (i) $phi$ sends conjugacy classes to conjugacy classes; and (ii) $\phi$(g1)$\phi$(g2) is conjugate to $\phi$(g1g2) for all g1, g2 in G. The set of all such mappings forms a group W(G) under composition. We study W(G) for fifty-six of the two hundred nineteen three-dimensional crystallographic groups G as well as some other groups. These fifty-six groups are related to our previous work on wallpaper groups.

Islamist Terrorism And The Classical Islamic Law Of War, Joseph Hoelz Dec 2021

Islamist Terrorism And The Classical Islamic Law Of War, Joseph Hoelz

International Law Studies

Islamist terrorists have had a large influence on U.S. foreign and domestic policy for more than twenty years, and yet policy makers, legal practitioners, and the public know very little about what motivates these violent extremist organizations. A primary unifying principle among the various Islamist terrorist groups is their desire to return to a religiously ordered State, justified and based upon their interpretation of the Shari’a, or Islamic law. This article explores the Islamist terrorist interpretation of Shari’a law and how it generally contradicts that of mainstream Islamic scholars. The article begins with a review of the primary and secondary …

Editorial: Biodiversity, Connectivity And Ecosystem Function Across The Clarion-Clipperton Zone: A Regional Synthesis For An Area Targeted For Nodule Mining, Craig R. Smith, Malcolm R. Clark, Erica Goetze, Adrian G. Glover, Kerry L. Howell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the equatorial Pacific Ocean is a vast region of abyssal plains and hills, polymetallic nodule fields, and seamounts. Because of the cobalt, nickel and copper content of polymetallic nodules in this region, the CCZ is targeted for deep-seabed mining. In order to safeguard seafloor biodiversity and ecosystem functions across the region in the event of mining, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2012 designated nine 400×400 km no-mining areas, called Areas of Particular Environmental Interest (APEIs) (Wedding et al., 2013). The APEIs were designed based on environmental correlates of biodiversity and ecosystem function to …

Inflection Points, Kinks, And Jumps: A Statistical Approach To Detecting Nonlinearities, Peren Arin, Maria Minniti, Samuele Murtinu, Nicola Spagnolo

All Works

Inflection points, kinks, and jumps identify places where the relationship between dependent and independent variables switches in some important way. Although these switch points are often mentioned in management research, their presence in the data is either ignored, or postulated ad hoc by testing arbitrarily specified functional forms (e.g., U or inverted U-shaped relationships). This is problematic if we want accurate tests for our theories. To address this issue, we provide an integrative framework for the identification of nonlinearities. Our approach constitutes a precursor step that researchers will want to conduct before deciding which estimation model may be most appropriate. …

To Scrutinize The Status Of Library Staff In The High School Libraries In Goa, Pravin Vasant Kamat Mr., Shambhavi Nikhil Joshi Mrs., Nikhil Arvind Joshi Mr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Few studies have reported the status of high school libraries from Goa. Keeping the importance of early education the present study highlights major issues through qualitative as well as quantitative methods. This study focuses on the library staff of High school libraries, their qualification and pay scale. Librarians in High schools are often treated as non–teaching staff and are given office-related clerical work. The authorities have shown negligence in setting up the required standards for High school libraries in Goa. No proper guidelines are formed which could help librarians to develop their school library. It was found that the majority …

The Global Burden Of Adolescent And Young Adult Cancer In 2019: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2019, Elysia M. Alvarez, Lisa M. Force, Rixing Xu, Kelly Compton, Dan Lu, Ismaeel Yunusa Ph. D., Et Al.

Faculty Publications

Background

In estimating the global burden of cancer, adolescents and young adults with cancer are often overlooked, despite being a distinct subgroup with unique epidemiology, clinical care needs, and societal impact. Comprehensive estimates of the global cancer burden in adolescents and young adults (aged 15–39 years) are lacking. To address this gap, we analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, with a focus on the outcome of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), to inform global cancer control measures in adolescents and young adults.

Methods

Using the GBD 2019 methodology, international mortality data were collected …

The Centennial Of The Pecking Order: Current State And Future Prospects For The Study Of Dominance Hierarchies, Eli D. Strauss, James P. Curley, Daizaburo Shizuka, Elizabeth A. Hobson

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A century ago, foundational work by Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe described a ‘pecking order’ in chicken societies, where individuals could be ordered according to their ability to exert their influence over their group-mates. Now known as dominance hierarchies, these structures have been shown to influence a plethora of individual characteristics and outcomes, situating dominance research as a pillar of the study of modern social ecology and evolution. Here, we first review some of the major questions that have been answered about dominance hierarchies in the last 100 years.Next,we introduce the contributions to this theme issue and summarize howthey provide ongoing insight in …

Classrooms Into Courtrooms, Naomi M. Mann Dec 2021

Classrooms Into Courtrooms, Naomi M. Mann

Faculty Scholarship

The federal Department of Education’s (DOE) 2020 Title IX Rule fundamentally transformed the relationship between postsecondary schools (schools) and students. While courts have long warned against turning classrooms into courtrooms, the 2020 Rule nonetheless imposed a mandatory quasi-criminal courtroom procedure for Title IX sexual harassment investigatory proceedings in schools. This transformation is a reflection of the larger trend of importing criminal law norms and due process protections into Title IX school proceedings. It is especially regressive at a time where calls for long-overdue criminal justice reform are reaching a boiling point across the nation. Its effects are especially troubling because …

Ambiguity, Rinoi Imada Dec 2021

Ambiguity, Rinoi Imada

Theses

Ambiguity explores the sense of ambiguous identity through conceptual investigations of glass and language structure. This body of work and thesis refer to my personal experience and scholarly research to observe transformation and transition of identity. My thesis considers glass as a phenomenal substance through its transformative materiality; my body of work reflects materiality of glass as an ephemeral identity of humanity. Utilizing glass as a transformative material, my body of work is the result of experimental art practices which are observations of photography, fusing glass techniques, live and site-specific gestures, and hotshop glass techniques.

The New Negro Has No Fear, Abiose Spriggs Dec 2021

The New Negro Has No Fear, Abiose Spriggs

Theses

THE NEW NEGRO HAS NO FEAR, is the title of my thesis for my Master of Fine Arts candidacy. This body of work focuses on the heroic stature of Marcus Garvey and my contemporary reflection on the philosophy and principles of the UNIA (United Negro Improvement Association) and its founder. In my artwork I try to convey the story of Garvey and the UNIA by removing the figure and focusing more on simplistic yet timeless imagery like boats, chairs, cars and articles of clothing. In many paintings I explore the significance each object that is being depicted as pieces to …
