Connecting Communities During Crisis: A Case Study Of Nonprofit Agencies, People With Disabilities And Access To Covid-19 Vaccines, Brittany R.. Blomquist

Honors Capstones

Individuals with disabilities often face unique challenges not experienced by the general population. These circumstances are further exacerbated in rural communities where health care equity is disrupted by a lack of access to transportation resources to health care providers and economic hardships. The COVID-19 pandemic further amplified these inequities, creating new barriers in rural regions, to health access and health information, by demanding virtual access in place of physical access, requiring individuals to own, afford, and knowledgeably operate technology. This case study explores methodologies employed by three nonprofit Centers for Independent Living (CIL) agencies assisting people with disabilities, in rural …

Dynamic Mass Loss From Greenland’S Marine-Terminating Peripheral Glaciers, Ellyn M. Enderlin, Katherine Bollen, Rebecca Muhlheim Dec 2021

Dynamic Mass Loss From Greenland’S Marine-Terminating Peripheral Glaciers, Ellyn M. Enderlin, Katherine Bollen, Rebecca Muhlheim

CryoGARS Glaciology Data

Balance has decreased rapidly over the last two decades, exceeding mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. In Greenland, peripheral glaciers and ice caps (GICs) cover only ~5% of Greenland’s area but contributed ~20% of the island’s ice mass loss between 2000-18. Although Greenland GIC mass loss due to surface meltwater runoff has been estimated using atmospheric models, mass loss due to changes in ice discharge into oceans (i.e., dynamic mass loss) remains unquantified. We use the flux gate method to estimate discharge from Greenland’s 585 marine-terminating peripheral glaciers between 1985-2018, and compute dynamic mass loss as the …

Host Range, Biology, And Species Specificity Of Seven-Segmented Influenza Viruses—A Comparative Review On Influenza C And D, Chithra Sreenivasan, Zizhang Sheng, Dan Wang, Feng Li

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Other than genome structure, influenza C (ICV), and D (IDV) viruses with seven-segmented genomes are biologically different from the eight-segmented influenza A (IAV), and B (IBV) viruses concerning the presence of hemagglutinin–esterase fusion protein, which combines the function of hemagglutinin and neuraminidase responsible for receptor-binding, fusion, and receptor-destroying enzymatic activities, respectively. Whereas ICV with humans as primary hosts emerged nearly 74 years ago, IDV, a distant relative of ICV, was isolated in 2011, with bovines as the primary host. Despite its initial emergence in swine, IDV has turned out to be a transboundary bovine pathogen and a broader host range, …

Improving Academic Success: Creating A College Planning Resource For Students, Hannah Grunden

Honors Projects

Academic performance of students is a major concern for colleges, especially with the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Research has shown that active involvement, the development of self-regulation skills, and improved mental health all have a considerable impact on college students’ academic success. Colleges like Bowling Green State University need to consider how they can use these factors and leverage resources to improve student performance. In this project, a solution is proposed in the form of a college/personal planner which is directly based off research on early academic success. While further, more specific research is needed to fully understand the issue and …

Physics - All Scholarship

Infection of human cells by pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, typically proceeds by cell surface binding to a crucial receptor. The primary receptor for SARS-CoV-2 is the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), yet new studies reveal the importance of additional extracellular co-receptors that mediate binding and host cell invasion by SARS-CoV-2. Vimentin is an intermediate filament protein that is increasingly recognized as being present on the extracellular surface of a subset of cell types, where it can bind to and facilitate pathogens’ cellular uptake. Biophysical and cell infection studies are done to determine whether vimentin might bind SARS-CoV-2 and facilitate its uptake. Dynamic …

Hiv/Aids After The Crisis: The Evolution Of An Epidemic, Emma Paras

Honors Projects

HIV and AIDS has affected the world for over four decades. In the past, a positive HIV diagnosis could very well be a death sentence, as well as signal that an individual was a social outcast. In the past ten years, however, treatments for HIV/AIDS allow a person to live a long and relatively healthy life. In addition to examining current and future trends in HIV treatment, this paper will also discuss how the virus affects different regions of the world. Particularly in certain parts of Africa, HIV/AIDS remains deadly for many who don’t have proper access to health care …

Rearguard Or Vanguard? A New Look At Canada’S Constitutional Act Of 1791, Philip Girard Dec 2021

Rearguard Or Vanguard? A New Look At Canada’S Constitutional Act Of 1791, Philip Girard

Articles & Book Chapters

The Constitutional Act 1791, which provided representative governments to Upper and Lower Canada, has often been regarded as a reactionary document. Here, a comparison with the constitutions of the eastern colonies of British North America as well as the pre-revolutionary constitutions of the Thirteen Colonies reveals a variety of ways in which the 1791 Act was more liberal and more committed to the popular element of the constitution than its comparators. The significance of the statutory form of the 1791 Act is emphasised and contrasted with the much less secure position of the popular element under prerogative constitutions. Significant concessions …

Chert Formation At Iodp Site U1521 As A Proxy For Variations In Marine Geochemistry At The Onset Of The Miocene Climate Optimum, Finlay T. Mcelmeel

Honors Capstones

The goal of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 374 in the Ross Sea, Antarctica was to collect marine sediment drill cores that would demonstrate the changes in the Antarctic Ice Sheets mass balance during times of Earth history when global temperatures and atmospheric CO2 were higher than today. Intervals such as the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO; ~17-14.5 million years ago) provide insights into what a future world could look like (Shevenell et al., 2004; Levy et al., 2016). Ice-proximal records from the near-Antarctic coast, such as those collected during IODP Exp 374, may hold critical information to understanding far-reaching …

Standardizing Surgical Skin Antisepsis, Crystal Vackar Dec 2021

Standardizing Surgical Skin Antisepsis, Crystal Vackar

MSN Capstone Projects

Skin antisepsis is one of the most critical factors for preventing postoperative surgical site infections, but with the lack of high-quality research, the choice of which preoperative skin antiseptic is best remains a puzzling problem for clinicians (Chen, Chen, Guo, & Xu, 2020). Minimizing the patient’s risk of a surgical site infection by removing skin contaminants at the surgical site is the goal of surgical skin antisepsis. Therefore, the hospital or organization must choose the right product that is cutting costs, is the most effective, saving surgical time, and has the safest results for the patient. Before prepping the skin, …

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Bundle Care, Jeemole Kattezham Binnichan Dec 2021

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Bundle Care, Jeemole Kattezham Binnichan

MSN Capstone Projects

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most significant nosocomial infections in intensive care units (ICU) worldwide. Patients who have this infection due to lengthy hospital stays face excessive hospital expenditures and are forced to spend more time away from their families than is necessary. VAP is a prominent cause of morbidity and mortality in ICUs, prompting plenty of studies. The most crucial target is its prevention. Understanding how to reduce VAP would help patients live longer, have a better quality of life, and reduce hospital liability. Ventilator-associated pneumonia bundle (VAPB) has been shown in numerous studies to be an …

A Formal Antibiotic Stewardship Protocol To Reduce Antibiotic Use, Shalese Ladawne Collins Dec 2021

A Formal Antibiotic Stewardship Protocol To Reduce Antibiotic Use, Shalese Ladawne Collins

MSN Capstone Projects

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is a nationwide public health crisis which is a result of indiscriminate antibiotic use. Inappropriate antibiotic prescribing for infections have been overlooked for several years in long-term care facilities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been compelled to require long-term care facilities to start an antibiotic stewardship program that is a key measure to combat antimicrobial resistance and seeks to accomplish this by improving antibiotic use. Many healthcare workers report presumed urinary tract infections to the provider without the accurate understanding of what criteria is required for the need of antibiotics.

Objective: Create a protocol …

The Use Of Tele-Health Rehabilitation In Chronic Disease: A Benchmark Project, Emily C. Powers

MSN Capstone Projects

Chronic health issues such as heart disease or COPD are very common in the demographic of patients of an older age. Management often requires multiple medications and specific diets. However, an aspect of care that can often be neglected is that of exercise rehabilitation. Either due to distance, time-constraints, or simply just not wanting to do it, patients can easily neglect an aspect of their care that can have physical and mental benefits. One potential solution is that of tele-health rehabilitation which uses personalized exercise plans, a health watch, and communication through phone or video chat in order to bring …

Aim: To see the relationship between nursing satisfaction and patient safety outcomes through the implementation of a shared governance program.

Background: The adoption of shared governance in hospitals across the country would enable more nurses to have more resources, more autonomy in their practice, and thus higher satisfaction in their work environments which would improve patient outcomes.

Implications for future research, clinical practice and policy development: The following paper summarizes that shared governance programs increase the amount of satisfied nurses and improve patient outcomes. Further research is needed to develop effective guides for implementation of shared governance in healthcare facilities …

Bedside Shift Reporting: A Benchmark Project, Clydea C. Hale Dec 2021

Bedside Shift Reporting: A Benchmark Project, Clydea C. Hale

MSN Capstone Projects

Patient care is forever changing to improve satisfaction, safety, and overall treatment. Over the past few years, patients and their families are more invested in their overall care in the hospital and expect to be informed every step of the way. A common complaint from patients or their families is that one nurse or staff did not know the individuals care or treatment plan, there were no shift goals to work toward discharge, and the nurse did not update the patient/family with changes in care. All of these complaints along with the patient satisfaction scores and communication between the treatment …

Evidence-Based Individualized Discharge Educational Intervention For Coronary Artery Disease (Cad) Patients; A Benchmark Project, Sumita Thapa Dec 2021

Evidence-Based Individualized Discharge Educational Intervention For Coronary Artery Disease (Cad) Patients; A Benchmark Project, Sumita Thapa

MSN Capstone Projects

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, whereas, in the United States, 16,800,000 people are affected, resulting in 450,000 deaths annually. Patients’ perceptions of self-management related to treatment adherence, lifestyle modifications, and risk-factor management are significant indicators of outcomes following a cardiac event. To promote self-management in CAD patients, this benchmark project aims to determine the impact of individualized education interventions by establishing a standardized nurse-led educational intervention in the cardiac unit that emphasizes adherence to self-management and treatment regimen to improve quality of life and prevent rehospitalization due to worsening cardiac events. The evidence-based findings …
