A Survey Of Stainless Steel In Medical And Surgical Application, Noah Slack, Clint Balch
A Survey Of Stainless Steel In Medical And Surgical Application, Noah Slack, Clint Balch
ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
Stainless steels can be separated into four families based on the microstructure of the material: Austenitic, Ferritic, Martensitic, and Duplex. Each family provides a specific set of advantages and disadvantages, and material selection should be based on the specific application the material will be used for. For this study, the processing, microstructure, and performance of the four families of stainless steels will be compared in the context of medical device applications. The most important factors in medical device materials are biocompatibility, surface properties, mechanical properties and life span/corrosion resistance. This study will focus on medical devices that will be permanently …

The Process-Structure-Property-Performance Of Aisi 1020, Jonathan Wellman, Tate James, Robbie Christman, Brian Broom
ME 4133/6133 Mechanical Metallurgy
AISI 1020 is widely used in many different industries due to its high strength, high ductility, high machinability, and good weldability. AISI 1020 has a number of applications. Low carbon steel can be used on a macroscale to build bridges, and low carbon steel can be used on smaller scales such as Lawnmower blades. Low carbon steel is the material of choice for lawn mower blades because of its ability to bend before it breaks. The ductile attribute of low carbon steel also has many other benefits.

Alterations In Glycemic Variability, Vascular Health, And Oxidative Stress Following A 12-Week Aerobic Exercise Intervention-A Pilot Study, Joshua R. Sparks, Mark A. Sarzynski, J. Mark Davis, Peter W. Grandjean, Xuewen Wang
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 14(3): 1334-1353, 2021. The state of being overweight or obese leads to an increased risk of development of cardiometabolic disease. Increases in glycemic variability have been associated with greater induction of oxidative stress and declined vascular health, which may be exacerbated by higher weight status and improved through exercise. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a twelve-week aerobic exercise intervention on continuous glucose monitor (CGM) assessed glucose concentrations and glycemic variability, and biomarkers of vascular health and oxidative stress in overweight or obese adults. Eight adults (Age = 48.9 ± …

Acute Changes In Arterial Function Post High-Intensity Lower Extremity Cycling, Alyssa Weatherholt, William R. Vanwye, Jeffery L. Short, Alyssa A. Andreis, Guoyuan Huang
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 14(2): 1363-1374, 2021. The purpose of this study was to assess the acute arterial blood flow velocity of the lower extremity (LE) immediately after a bout of high-intensity LE cycling exercise. Twenty-eight healthy males (n = 14) and females (n = 14) aged 20.9 ± 1.7 years participated in this study. All subjects performed a single bout of high-intensity cycling (70% of HRR) for 45 min. The subjects' LE blood flow velocity, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured at rest, immediately post-, post-15 min., …
Remote Ischemic Preconditioning Does Not Improve The Six Minutes Walk Test Performance In Chronic Heart Failure Patients: A Randomised Pilot Trial, Sarah-Maude Martin, Francois Lalonde, Elise Legault, Paula Ribeiro, Alain Steve Comtois, François Tournoux
Remote Ischemic Preconditioning Does Not Improve The Six Minutes Walk Test Performance In Chronic Heart Failure Patients: A Randomised Pilot Trial, Sarah-Maude Martin, Francois Lalonde, Elise Legault, Paula Ribeiro, Alain Steve Comtois, François Tournoux
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 14(2): 1354-1362, 2021. Cycles of ischemia and reperfusion induced with a pressure cuff on a skeletal muscle, also know as remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC), appears to improve performance in different time-trial events in healthy individuals. Our primary goal was to assess the effect of RIPC in heart failure (HF) patients’ functional capacity using the six-minute walk test (6MWT). A randomized crossover design comparing RIPC (4 x five-minutes of upper arm ischemia) to the SHAM procedure was done in 15 patients prior to a 6MWT. The primary outcome measure was the total distance walked in a …

The Naval Career Of John Eliot, Governor Of West Florida, Robert R. Rea
The Naval Career Of John Eliot, Governor Of West Florida, Robert R. Rea
Florida Historical Quarterly
The Royal Navy offered a promising career to the younger sons of many an English county family in the eighteenth century, and when political influence could be brought to bear, prospects for rapid advancement were considerably increased. The case of John Eliot offers an interesting example of the making of a naval officer during the Seven Years War and demonstrates the heights to which family connections could raise a very young man, for Eliot’s elevation to the governorship of the colony of West Florida at the age of twenty-four far surpassed the claims of his service at sea. Eliot’s naval …
Policing Miami's Black Community, 1896-1930, Paul S. George
Policing Miami's Black Community, 1896-1930, Paul S. George
Florida Historical Quarterly
When Miami, Florida, was incorporated in 1896, most white residents mirrored the prevailing attitude toward blacks. Negroes, they assumed, were inferior people who represented a potential threat to the white community. This attitude resulted in the consignment of blacks to cramped quarters with inadequate municipal services, creation of a dual system of justice, and semi-official tolerance of white terrorism. The symbol and guardian of this order was the police.
An Empty Victory: The St. Petersburg Sanitation Strike, 1968, Darryl Paulson
An Empty Victory: The St. Petersburg Sanitation Strike, 1968, Darryl Paulson
Florida Historical Quarterly
St. Petersburg, Florida, has long had the image of being a haven for retirees and tourists. People are drawn to the city by its beaches, its sunshine, and its tranquility. The peaceful climate of St. Petersburg was shattered in 1968 when a work stoppage in the sanitation department mushroomed into a four-month strike. What started as a nonviolent effort using marches, picketing, and economic boycotts in an attempt to increase wages, transformed itself into fire bombings, arson, gunfire, and riots. At the conclusion of the strike, the workers found their situation no better than before the walkout, but the strike …
Governor Leroy Collins Of Florida And The Selma Crisis Of 1965, Thomas R. Wagy
Governor Leroy Collins Of Florida And The Selma Crisis Of 1965, Thomas R. Wagy
Florida Historical Quarterly
On Tuesday, March 9, 1965, a bright sun shone on Selma, Alabama, replacing the gray, gloomy weather which had blanketed the city for days. Despite the sixty degree temperature, the air held a winter crispness. Most of the people gathered at Brown’s Chapel wore heavy overcoats and gloves. The nervous conversations grew into an expectant murmur and then applause as a young black man came into view. He walked among the crowd, touched the extended hands, and moved to the church steps to speak. He was their leader. Arguments about whether or not to march ended. They would abide by …
