Educational Pandemic Impacts In Applied Behavior Analysis (Aba) Classrooms: Qualitative Outcomes From Board Certified Behavior Analyst (Bcba) And Registered Behavior Technicians (Rbt) Perspectives, Chana S. Josilowski-Max, Nicole Lambright Dec 2021

Educational Pandemic Impacts In Applied Behavior Analysis (Aba) Classrooms: Qualitative Outcomes From Board Certified Behavior Analyst (Bcba) And Registered Behavior Technicians (Rbt) Perspectives, Chana S. Josilowski-Max, Nicole Lambright

The Qualitative Report

The current COVID-19 pandemic has led to unprecedented changes in how Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services are provided to students/clients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and scant literature is available from which to determine the best course of action for providing safe services during a pandemic. The research question for this study is: What is the essence of experiences of parents, teachers, and Board-Certified Behavior Analysts of students with ASD who are now receiving ABA services remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic school closures? Generic qualitative design was used to analyze the responses of nine participants who are either Board …

“I Am More Than My Country Of Origin”: An Arts-Based Engagement Ethnography With Racialized Newcomer Women In Canada, Danielle J. Smith, Amy Green, Sarah Nutter, Anusha Kassan, Monica Sesma-Vazquez, Nancy Arthur Prof, Shelly Russell-Mayhew

The Qualitative Report

Many women immigrate with the hope that they will gain new opportunities for themselves and their families, however, they often face significant challenges due to the intersectional stigmas related to their gender, immigration status, and other aspects of their social location. In this study, we sought to understand the holistic experience of racialized newcomer women to better support their integration process. Using Arts-Based Engagement Ethnography (ABEE), we employed the use of cultural probes and qualitative interviews to gain an in-depth understanding of the experience of ten newcomer women. An ethnographic analysis of this data yielded four overarching structures which include …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Investigating human platelet function in low-oxygen environments is important in multiple settings, including hypobaric hypoxia (e.g., high altitude), sea level hypoxia-related disease, and thrombus stability. These studies often involve drawing blood from which platelets are isolated and analysed at atmospheric conditions or re-exposed to low oxygen levels in hypoxia chambers before testing. However, it remains unknown how the in vitro handling of the samples itself changes their dissolved oxygen concentration, which might affect platelet function and experimental results. Here, we prepared healthy donor platelet-rich plasma and washed platelet (WP) suspensions and exposed them to 2% oxygen. We found that the …

Method For Creating Subject-Specific Models Of The Wrist In Both Degrees Of Freedom Using Measured Muscle Excitations And Joint Torques, Blake Robert Harper Dec 2021

Method For Creating Subject-Specific Models Of The Wrist In Both Degrees Of Freedom Using Measured Muscle Excitations And Joint Torques, Blake Robert Harper

Theses and Dissertations

Two-thirds of repetitive strain injuries affect the wrist joint. Although force is believed to be one of the major factors, the forces involved in wrist movements have not been thoroughly characterized in vivo. Computer simulations with a musculoskeletal model of the wrist have been used to estimate wrist muscle forces, but only at maximum voluntary contraction and only involving a single degree of freedom (DOF). In this study we present a method for creating a subject-specific model that can be used to estimate muscle forces and joint torques in both degrees of freedom of the wrist over a range of …

The Development Of A Social And Emotional Well-Being Scale Using Esem And Cfa: Synergistic Stories In Complex Models, Christopher Hughes Busath

Theses and Dissertations

School districts face unique challenges as they implement social and emotional learning (SEL) initiatives, particularly when choosing or developing a high-quality scale to measure non-academic competencies. Like collaborations with the CORE school districts described by West, Buckley, et al. (2018) and the Washoe County School District described by Davidson et al. (2018), Alpine School District (ASD) partnered with Brigham Young University (BYU) to develop a scale (80 items) that reflected their Vision for Learning framework. In this pilot study, I describe the collaborative and iterative process used to develop a shortened version of the ASD Social and Emotional Well-Being Scale …

Fibrin Prestress Due To Platelet Aggregation And Contraction Increases Clot Stiffness, Suyog J. Pathare, Wilson Eng, Sang Joon J. Lee, Anand K. Ramasubramanian Dec 2021

Fibrin Prestress Due To Platelet Aggregation And Contraction Increases Clot Stiffness, Suyog J. Pathare, Wilson Eng, Sang Joon J. Lee, Anand K. Ramasubramanian

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Efficient hemorrhagic control is attained through the formation of strong and stable blood clots at the site of injury. Although it is known that platelet-driven contraction can dramatically influence clot stiffness, the underlying mechanisms by which platelets assist fibrin in resisting external loads are not understood. In this study, we delineate the contribution of platelet-fibrin interactions to clot tensile mechanics using a combination of new mechanical measurements, image analysis, and structural mechanics simulation. Based on uniaxial tensile test data using custom-made microtensometer and fluorescence microscopy of platelet aggregation and platelet-fibrin interactions, we show that integrin-mediated platelet aggregation and actomyosin-driven platelet …

Blue Light, Rachael Greenfield Dec 2021

Blue Light, Rachael Greenfield

Theses

During a steamy afternoon at the beach, a seagull makes its way through crowds of phone-distracted humans in its search for a meal. When it lays its eyes on a fresh box of french fries, the seagull stops at nothing to get a taste, even while increasingly strange fates are befalling the humans. While everyone is distracted, by fries or by cell phones, a vortex opens in the sky and carries everyone into the unknown. Finally, with the people vanished, the seagulls reap the benefits of an abandoned beach full of snack foods left behind. Blue Light began as an …

School of Medicine Publications

Candida pericarditis is a rare condition which has previously been described after cardiothoracic surgery and immunosuppressive states (Geisler et al., 1981; Eng et al., 1981; Kraus et al., 1988; Kaufman et al., 1988; Tang et al., 2009; Glower et al., 1990; Carrel et al., 1991; Rabinovici et al., 1997; Canver et al., 1998; Farjah et al., 2005; Gronemeyer et al., 1982 [1-11]). We describe the case of a 19-year-old male blunt trauma patient, who survived a damage control thoracotomy and laparotomy with splenectomy, who later developed a loculated Candida pericardial effusion, complicated with cardiac tamponade and multiple organ failure, and …

Single-Cell Regulatory Network Inference And Clustering Identifies Cell-Type Specific Expression Pattern Of Transcription Factors In Mouse Sciatic Nerve, Mingchao Li, Qing Min, Matthew C. Banton, Xinpeng Dun

School of Biomedical Sciences

Advances in single-cell RNA sequencing technologies and bioinformatics methods allow for both the identification of cell types in a complex tissue and the large-scale gene expression profiling of various cell types in a mixture. In this report, we analyzed a single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) dataset for the intact adult mouse sciatic nerve and examined cell-type specific transcription factor expression and activity during peripheral nerve homeostasis. In total, we identified 238 transcription factors expressed in nine different cell types of intact mouse sciatic nerve. Vascular smooth muscle cells have the lowest number of transcription factors expressed with 17 transcription factors identified. …

Intake Estimation Of Rams Under Grazing Condition In A Deferred Pastures Of Panicum Coloratum By Two Techniques, C. M. Ferri, M. A. Brizuela, N. P. Stritzler, H. J. Petruzzi Dec 2021

Intake Estimation Of Rams Under Grazing Condition In A Deferred Pastures Of Panicum Coloratum By Two Techniques, C. M. Ferri, M. A. Brizuela, N. P. Stritzler, H. J. Petruzzi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The goal of this study was to quantify the organic matter intake (OMI) of Pampinta rams grazing in a Panicum coloratum cv Verde differed pasture. The OMI was compared by two methods: a) the difference between the forage measured in pre and post-grazing condition, and b) the faecal production:digestibility ratio of the diet, estimated by total faecal gathering, and from the quantity of total faecal N in g per 100 g-1 of OMI and the concentration of total faecal N, respectively. The OMI estimated by difference between the forage measured in pre and post-grazing was 9 % higher (P …

Estimation Of Organic Matter Digestibility And Intake From Faecal Organic Matter And Daily N Excretion And Concentration, C. M. Ferri, N. P. Stritzler, M. A. Brizuela Dec 2021

Estimation Of Organic Matter Digestibility And Intake From Faecal Organic Matter And Daily N Excretion And Concentration, C. M. Ferri, N. P. Stritzler, M. A. Brizuela

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

This study was performed with grazing sheep, to establish: a) if the amount of total faecal N (C; in g 100g-1 of organic matter intake (OMI)) remains constant at three feeding levels, in four utilisation periods of deferred Panicum coloratum cv. Verde; b) the relationship between C and faecal N fractions, and c) the relationship between faecal daily excretion of OM and N, and OMI. Intake increased (P< 0.01) with utilisation period, and was related (r = - 0.82; P< 0.01) to the protein content of food, the insoluble N fraction (r = -0.49; P< 0.01) and the soluble:insoluble N ratio (r = 0.41; P< 0.01) in faeces. No relation with total N concentration (r = -0.22; P> 0.05) or soluble N fraction (r = -0.02; P> 0.05) in faeces could be found. Daily excretion of OM and N were positively related (R2 = 0.93 and 0.96, respectively; …

Effects Of Fertilization And Legume Introduction On The Forage Production Of Brachiaria Decumbens Pastures, M. R. Correa, Tsutomu Kanno, Manuel C. M. Macedo, J. D. G. Santos Junior, L. G. Beretta Dec 2021

Effects Of Fertilization And Legume Introduction On The Forage Production Of Brachiaria Decumbens Pastures, M. R. Correa, Tsutomu Kanno, Manuel C. M. Macedo, J. D. G. Santos Junior, L. G. Beretta

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A grazing experiment was conducted to examine the effects of P and K fertilization and legume introduction on the forage production of Brachiaria decumbens (BD) pastures. Amount of biomass, dry matter production and forage quality were evaluated on BD pastures where three treatments were applied: without maintenance fertilizer (BD-N), with maintenance fertilizer (BD-F), and BD and Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Mineirao (SG) mixture with maintenance fertilizer (BD-FL). The fertilizer application increased an annual average of biomass and the contents of P and K in the leaves. On the other hand, the legume introduction had a positive influence on crude protein and …
