The Role Of Occupational Therapy In The Adaptive Scuba Diving Industry, Erin Wallace, Karen Park Dec 2021

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In The Adaptive Scuba Diving Industry, Erin Wallace, Karen Park

Fall 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Background: Adaptive scuba diving is an activity that provides many therapeutic benefits to individuals living with physical, visual, and/or cognitive disabilities. Occupational therapists (OTs) specialize in using valued activities as therapeutic interventions, however, the literature supporting the profession’s value in the adaptive scuba diving industry is limited. There are no clearly defined job descriptions for OTs contributing to the adaptive scuba diving industry although evidence shows the therapeutic potential that OTs can contribute to it.

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to demonstrate OT’s value in the adaptive scuba diving industry by creating an adaptive diving reference …

Assessing Occupational Access And Enhancing Occupational Engagement At Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities, Cristina Ruelas, Susan Macdermott, Ingrid Leu Dec 2021

Assessing Occupational Access And Enhancing Occupational Engagement At Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities, Cristina Ruelas, Susan Macdermott, Ingrid Leu

Fall 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Many individuals at inpatient psychiatric facilities experience limited participation in activities of daily living, minimal opportunities for purposeful occupations, very few productive roles, and almost no occupational choice and autonomy (Murphy & Shiel, 2019). Many people report experiencing boredom throughout their stay (Marshall, et. al., 2020). This boredom can lead to poor patient satisfaction, frustration, aggression, or incidents of self-harm (Foye, et al., 2020). Individuals at psychiatric facilities are deprived of participation in daily occupations (Murphy & Shiel, 2019) and they experience an injustice of occupational deprivation.

Occupational Therapy And The Transition Into Fatherhood, Rheanne Sager, Karen Park, Aaron Bonsall Dec 2021

Occupational Therapy And The Transition Into Fatherhood, Rheanne Sager, Karen Park, Aaron Bonsall

Fall 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Background: There are few resources that address the postpartum time period in fathers and the transition period of becoming a new parent specifically for males (Goldstein et al., 2020). Males experience postpartum symptoms almost as frequently as women (Madsen, 2009); however, men display different symptoms than women and are often not thought of because they did not physically carry the infant (O’Connell-Binns, 2009). The transition period for becoming a new parent is stressful on males as well as females, yet the male role is not always clear for the individuals (Asenhed et al., 2014).

Purpose: The purpose of …

KIP Articles

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) issued its Publication 137, Occupational Intakes of Radionuclides: Part 3 in which the radon equilibrium factor is fixed as 0.4 for tourist caves; however, several studies have reported a different value for the factor and its seasonal variation has also been observed. In this study, the radon concentration, equilibrium equivalent radon concentration and meteorological data were measured, and the equilibrium factor was evaluated in a tourist cave, Gyokusen-do Cave located in the southern part of Okinawa Island in southwestern Japan. Radon concentrations were measured with an AlphaGUARD and their corresponding meteorological data were …

Machine Learning And Radiomic Features To Predict Overall Survival Time For Glioblastoma Patients, Lina Chato, Shahram Latifi Dec 2021

Machine Learning And Radiomic Features To Predict Overall Survival Time For Glioblastoma Patients, Lina Chato, Shahram Latifi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain tumor with a low survival rate. Understanding tumor behavior by predicting prognosis outcomes is a crucial factor in deciding a proper treatment plan. In this paper, an automatic overall survival time prediction system (OST) for glioblastoma patients is developed on the basis of radiomic features and machine learning (ML). This system is designed to predict prognosis outcomes by classifying a glioblastoma patient into one of three survival groups: short-term, mid-term, and long-term. To develop the prediction system, a medical dataset based on imaging information from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and non-imaging information is used. A …

Strategies For Teaching Based On Autism Research (Star Program) Curriculum Review And Implementation, Cassidy Harrington Dec 2021

Strategies For Teaching Based On Autism Research (Star Program) Curriculum Review And Implementation, Cassidy Harrington

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is becoming more prevalent in school systems. Researchers began tracking the prevalence of ASD in the year 2000. It is estimated that 1 in 68 children have ASD in the United States of America (1 in 42 prevalence for boys and 1 in 189 prevalence for girls) (Landa, 2018). Medically a child can be diagnosed with ASD but school systems themselves are not able to formally diagnose ASD in children. (ECTA, 2012). ASD can be hard to diagnose as some cases are more severe than others and the earlier that a child is found to have …

Organizational Context, Shared Governance Structure, And Outcomes In Veterans Affairs Hospitals, Bonnie J. Charland Dec 2021

Organizational Context, Shared Governance Structure, And Outcomes In Veterans Affairs Hospitals, Bonnie J. Charland

Dissertations

For decades nurse executives have implemented shared governance structures as a nursing management innovation to transform the nursing organization from a bureaucratic hierarchy to a more organic, relational partnership. However, there is little generalizable evaluation of the effects of shared governance on nurse and patient outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine organizational context and quality outcomes in relation to shared governance structures at VA hospitals. Structural contingency theory guided this ex post facto descriptive correlational study of the relationships between organizational context, nursing shared governance, and outcomes in VA hospitals in the United States.

A Comparison Of Evaluation Methods Of Intravenous Catheter Insertion Skills In Third-Term Associate Degree Nursing Students, Dara Jones Murray

Dissertations

Nursing programs are responsible for ensuring student nurses are competent in performing psychomotor skills before clinical experience to ensure patient safety. Traditional, face-to-face methods of evaluating skills are time-consuming for nursing faculty. However, online video recording tools provide a potential solution to provide a quality evaluation while creating a more efficient process. The purpose of this study was to compare faculty work hours, the number of student errors identified by the faculty, and the number of students achieving a passing score when using an online video recording tool versus the traditional face-to-face approach in the evaluation of peripheral intravenous catheter …

Element Contamination In Port Everglades – Preparing For Ecological Impacts, Laura White

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Port dredging is of economic importance worldwide but its impacts to the marine environment through the remobilization of elemental contaminants are not well understood. A massive deepening and widening of Port Everglades, Florida, will begin in 2023. Contaminated sediment disturbed during the dredging process could be released and prove to be harmful to three coral reef tracks located beginning 1.5 miles away from the port. This study focused on identifying and quantifying 14 different trace elements: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), tin (Sn), …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Atherosclerosis is a lipid-driven chronic inflammatory disease that leads to the formation of plaques in the inner lining of arteries. Plaques form over a range of phenotypes, the most severe of which is vulnerable to rupture and causes most of the clinically significant events. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of nanoparticles (NPs) to differentiate between two plaque phenotypes based on accumulation kinetics in a mouse model of atherosclerosis. This model uses a perivascular cuff to induce two regions of disturbed wall shear stress (WSS) on the inner lining of the instrumented artery, low (upstream) and multidirectional (downstream), which, …
