Adjusting Equalizer Settings Based On Learned User Preferences, Michael D. Townsend
Adjusting Equalizer Settings Based On Learned User Preferences, Michael D. Townsend
Defensive Publications Series
Currently, the equalizer settings for media playback via a headset are selected based on a limited number of user studies. Equalizer preferences depend on various factors, including earbud fit (which impacts audio leakage levels) and the genre of audio being listened to. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically set or recommend equalizer settings using machine learning models that are trained on a crowdsourced dataset of user preferences, obtained with user permission. Equalizer settings, audio genre, and magnitude of acoustic leakage are obtained from deployed media playback devices and are used to train the machine learning model. During operation, the trained …

Teaching And Assessing College Stem Courses Online During Covid-19: Evidence-Based Strategies And Recommendations, Santanu De, Georgina Arguello
FDLA Journal
Since the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, most schools, colleges, and universities worldwide underwent a paradigm shift by transitioning to digital teaching and learning modalities. This phenomenon was essential to mitigate the contagion; however, the academic institutions needed to quickly come up with ways to ensure that the quality and rigor of education were maintained, especially the active and experiential learning required by undergraduate and graduate courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This paper highlights key approaches reported or proposed to effectively conduct college-level, in-person STEM courses online owing to the pandemic. These would range from synchronous versus asynchronous pedagogies …

This mini-study will be viewed in the lens of human capital theory guided by Gary Becker (1964).
Philosophical Foundations Of African Women's Indigenous Knowledge For Food Security: Towards Narrative Feminist Pedagogy, Humphrey Jeremiah Ojwang, Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira, Penninah Amolo Ogada
Philosophical Foundations Of African Women's Indigenous Knowledge For Food Security: Towards Narrative Feminist Pedagogy, Humphrey Jeremiah Ojwang, Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira, Penninah Amolo Ogada
FDLA Journal
This paper explores the pedagogical value of African Women’s Indigenous Knowledge or Food Security. The approach is narratological and takes into account oral testimonies and life-stories of women farmers in Homa Bay County, Kenya. The paper proposes African feminist epistemology as a viable approach in the pedagogy of food security and agricultural extension in rural Kenya. This is a paradigm shift which incorporates women farmers’ indigenous knowledge in formal agricultural education and extension programmes. The paradigm shift to African feminist epistemology is a response to a pedagogical anomaly where women’s indigenous knowledge has been relegated to the sidelines, with hegemonic …

Maintaining Privacy And Security In Cyberspace: What Everyone Needs To Know, Maureen Mcdermott, Jennifer L. Reeves, Gabriela Mendez, Berta Hayes Capo, Jason Karp
FDLA Journal
The growth of technology will always outpace legal and ethical understanding concerning maintaining privacy and security in cyberspace. Remote network security breaches are a common method for taking sensitive information from companies, K-12 school districts, institutions of higher learning, and from social media accounts. Parents, university/college personnel, teachers and other adults working in the K-12 systems are held accountable to higher standards when determining levels of technology infusion especially with distance education.

Linguistic Ability As A Major Component Of Foreign Language Communicative Competence, Diyora Pardaeva Tahirovna Teacher
Central Asian Journal of Education
А substantial number of studies have been conducted on these three competences, they have not been conflated for discussion in a single study. Adding this piece to the jigsaw, the current paper explores these three competences in depth. This paper had a twin purpose of 1) providing a historical account of the linguistic, communicative and interactional competences, and 2) reviewing of the literature on them in order to identify gaps, if any, with the intention to propose new research ideas pertinent to the three types of competences. In order to achieve the study aims, an intensive literature survey was conducted. …

Citric Acid/Β-Alanine Carbon Dots As A Novel Tool For Delivery Of Plasmid Dna Into E. Coli Cells, Anju Pandey, Asmita Devkota, Anil Sigdel, Zeinab Yadegari, C. Korsi Dumenyo, Ali Taheri
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Successful delivery of plasmid DNA into the microbial cells is fundamental in recombinant DNA technology. Natural bacterial transformation is limited to only certain species due in part to the repulsive forces between negatively charged DNA and bacterial membranes. Most common method of DNA delivery into bacteria is artificial transformation through heat shock and electroporation. These methods require sophisticated instruments and tedious steps in preparation of competent cells. Transformation by conjugation is also not applicable to all plasmids. Nanoparticles have been used successfully in therapeutics for drug delivery into animal cells. They are starting to gain popularity in plant sciences as …

Commonalities Between Urban Mental Health And Rural Mental Health, Casey Bohlman
Commonalities Between Urban Mental Health And Rural Mental Health, Casey Bohlman
Counselor Education Capstones
During research into mental health, a common theme is the needs of urban and rural communities. There are entire journals dedicated to the mental health needs of these groups. Some common problems faced in both areas are access to mental health services as well as value systems that create barriers to accepting mental health services. The struggle to accept the help from very limited and often underfunded mental health services provides a perfect storm for rampant mental health and drug abuse problems. This is a review the current literature regarding the mental health services and barriers in these communities to …
