Female Puma (Puma Concolor) Highway Crossings In The Yucatan Peninsula, Carlos A. López González, Fernanda Cruz Torres, Mircea G. Hidalgo Mihart
Western North American Naturalist
Human infrastructure, particularly highway infrastructure, has proven to be a hazard for the resilience of large felid populations throughout the world. The Yucatan Peninsula is no exception and is presently confronted with the establishment of the “Tren Maya,” a continental railway that will reshape the road network of the peninsula. We describe 12 successful crossings of a 4-lane highway on the peninsula by a female puma (Puma concolor) fitted with a GPS radio-transmitter. The median time between sequential locations was 24 h (range 8–56 h), and the average number of days between crossings was 4.33 (SD = 2.50). …

The Qualitative Report
Using a testimonio methodology, this study provides insight on how language ideologies, family, and education in the Texas Borderlands impacted two Latina teachers’ view and understanding of their identity. Through our personal experiences as PK-16 students, classroom teachers, and doctoral students, we were able to understand the colonization of our language and the subsequent endangerment of our bilingualism, which upon reflecting, had an impact on how we see ourselves as individuals, bilinguals, teachers, and Latinas. Our experiences with our bilingualism affected the way in which we perceive ourselves and our community. The reflection and analysis of our experiences allowed us …

Intracavity Phase Interferometry Based Fiber Sensors, Luke Jameson Horstman
Intracavity Phase Interferometry Based Fiber Sensors, Luke Jameson Horstman
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Intracavity Phase Interferometry (IPI) is a detection technique that exploits the inherent sensitivity of a laser's frequency to the parameters of its cavity. Intracavity interferometry is orders of magnitude more sensitive than its extracavity alternatives. This dissertation improves on previous free-space proof-of-concept designs. By implementing the technique in fiber optics, using optical parametric oscillation, and investigating non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and dispersion tailoring enhancement techniques, IPI has become more applicable and sensitive. Ring and linear IPI configurations were realized in this work, both operating as bidirectional fiber optical parametric oscillators. The benefit of using externally pumped synchronous optical parametric oscillation is …

Regulation Of P53 And Cancer Signaling By Heat Shock Protein 40/J-Domain Protein Family Members., Atsushi Kaida, Tomoo Iwakuma
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones that assist diverse cellular activities including protein folding, intracellular transportation, assembly or disassembly of protein complexes, and stabilization or degradation of misfolded or aggregated proteins. HSP40, also known as J-domain proteins (JDPs), is the largest family with over fifty members and contains highly conserved J domains responsible for binding to HSP70 and stimulation of the ATPase activity as a co-chaperone. Tumor suppressor p53 (p53), the most frequently mutated gene in human cancers, is one of the proteins that functionally interact with HSP40/JDPs. The majority of p53 mutations are missense mutations, resulting in acquirement …

Robotic Olfactory-Based Navigation With Mobile Robots, Lingxiao Wang
Robotic Olfactory-Based Navigation With Mobile Robots, Lingxiao Wang
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Robotic odor source localization (OSL) is a technology that enables mobile robots or autonomous vehicles to find an odor source in unknown environments. It has been viewed as challenging due to the turbulent nature of airflows and the resulting odor plume characteristics. The key to correctly finding an odor source is designing an effective olfactory-based navigation algorithm, which guides the robot to detect emitted odor plumes as cues in finding the source. This dissertation proposes three kinds of olfactory-based navigation methods to improve search efficiency while maintaining a low computational cost, incorporating different machine learning and artificial intelligence methods.

Restricted Microbial Presence, Activity, And Community Structuring Within Dry Valley Soils Of Antarctica, Scott Fillerup George
Theses and Dissertations
The McMurdo Dry Valley region is the largest ice-free area of Antarctica. Harsh abiotic conditions of the polar desert ecosystem, including extreme cold, aridity, and limited nutrient availability select for unique taxa. The comparatively simple terrestrial ecosystem is well-suited for investigating edaphic influences on microbial presence, activity, and community structuring. The Dry Valleys are viewed as a useful analog for Mars astrobiology investigations. However, most biotic investigations have been focused on lower elevations, where an understanding of edaphic effects on microbial communities within its generally more favorable conditions has emerged. Transiently wetted Dry Valley water tracks may be analogous to …
Antipsychotic Medication Administration In Oregon Assisted Living/Residential Care Settings: Analyzing An Action Situation, Sarah Dys
Dissertations and Theses
Antipsychotic medication use (APU) in assisted living and residential care (AL/RC) settings is an under-studied and controversial health policy issue. APU in older adults with dementia is associated with an increased risk of falls, hospitalizations, and early mortality. I operationalize the Institutional Analysis and Development Framework using a situational analysis approach, an extension of grounded theory methods, to explore the APU in Oregon AL/RC settings. Regulatory deficiency citations, Oregon AL/RC population data, and semi-structured interviews suggest that staff role clarity, organizational characteristics, and perceived agency influence decision-making around APU. AL/RC providers and caregivers are forced to simultaneously balance and prioritize …

Emotional Intelligence And Resonant Leadership: Investigating School Principals' Preparation And Professional Development In Response To Covid-19 And Other Challenges, Ashlie Kaye Miller
Dissertations and Theses
Research has shown that high levels of emotional intelligence and resonant leadership can reduce workplace stress and increase the health, wellness, satisfaction, and performance of employees. Many K-12 principals face a myriad of challenges that tend to produce chronic stress, including the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Yet, it is unclear how the preparation and professional development (PPD) programs available to principals incorporate and encourage resonant leadership practices that are needed to effectively cope with these challenges. This study used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design to examine the perceptions of K-12 principals in Oregon regarding: (a) their needs and challenges, especially …

Prediction Of E.M.F. Variation Due To Shifting The Resultant Field In Dwr Synchronous Generator., Hassan Abou-Tabl
Prediction Of E.M.F. Variation Due To Shifting The Resultant Field In Dwr Synchronous Generator., Hassan Abou-Tabl
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In this paper the e.m.f. equation of an idealized synchronous generator, having a divided-winding-rotor, is derived. The equationis obtained in two alternative forms whereby the effect of shifting the resultant field around the rotor on the sinusoidal induced e.m.f. can be approached. Shifting the resultant field axis from its original diraction results actually in considerable distortion in the resultant no – load m.m.f. distribution. This distortion affects the induced e.m.f. , as exhibited by the measured values on machine model . A comparative study of the results, obtained by applying the method of harmonic analysis to the different m.m.f. waveforms …

This paper reports an expermintal investigation into the effect of different factors on the leakage current in power cables. The leakage current of different cables was studied using installed cables under actual operating conditions and also cable samples in HV-laboratory under well-controlled conditions. The results obtained showed that, the leakage current in any power cable depends on many factors, including the value and type of the applied voltage, time of voltage application, cable type and construction, and the type of the surrounding soil and its resistivity. These results showed also that leakage current in power cables can be considered as …
Molecular Mechanisms Of Aberrant Protein Glycosylation In Pancreatic Cancer Stemness And Metastasis, Frank Leon
Molecular Mechanisms Of Aberrant Protein Glycosylation In Pancreatic Cancer Stemness And Metastasis, Frank Leon
Theses & Dissertations
A myriad of genetic and other abnormal changes underlies the aggressiveness and dissemination properties observed in pancreatic cancer (PC). Aberrant protein glycosylation is a commonly observed feature in PC. The modification of protein O-glycosylation is mediated by glycosyltransferases, which attach and sequentially elongate monosaccharides on Serine/Threonine (Ser/Thr) motifs. Aberrant glycosylation is recognized as an emerging hallmark of cancer where a disruption in normal glycosylation results in irregular O-glycans.
This dissertation research has investigated the consequences of aberrant protein glycosylation on stemness and enhancement of metastatic properties in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Several publications have reported aberrant O-glycosylation increases in oncogenic …

Synthetic Aperture Optical Imaging Interferometric Microscopy With Improved Image Quality, Preyom K. Dey
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The resolution limit of optical microscopy can be extended by using Imaging Interferometric Microscopy (IIM), which uses a low numerical aperture (NA) objective lens to achieve resolution equivalent to that of a high-NA objective lens with multiple sub-images. Along with the resolution enhancement challenge, IIM often suffers from poor image quality. In this dissertation, several image quality improvement methods are proposed and verified with simulation and experimental results. Next, techniques to extend the resolution limit of IIM to ≤ 100nm using a low-NA objective lens are demonstrated. An experimental technique of using a grating coupler on …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Carbon-rich habitats can provide powerful climate mitigation if meaningful protection is put in place. We attempted to quantify this around the Tristan da Cunha archipelago Marine Protected Area. Its shallows (<1000 m depth) are varied and productive. The 5.4 km2 of kelp stores ~60 tonnes of carbon (tC) and may export ~240 tC into surrounding depths. In deep-waters we analysed seabed data collected from three research cruises, including seabed mapping, camera imagery, seabed oceanography and benthic samples from mini-Agassiz trawl. Rich biological assemblages on seamounts significantly differed to the islands and carbon storage had complex drivers. We estimate ~2.3 million tC are stored in benthic biodiversity of waters <1000 m, which includes >0.22 million tC that can be sequestered (the proportion of the carbon captured that is expected to become buried in sediment or locked away in skeletal tissue for at least 100 years). Much of this carbon is captured by cold-water coral reefs as a mixture of inorganic (largely calcium carbonate) and organic compounds. As part of its 2020 Marine Protection Strategy, these deep-water reef systems are now protected by …1000>

A flax fabric reinforced acrylic thermoplastic matrix component has been manufactured as two half blades (front and back respectively) with the parts bonded together with a wood dust acrylic polymer to produce a component with the same thermoplastic polymer used for the composite matrix and the adhesive. The mould profile is for a floating offshore wind (FLOW) turbine blade at scale 1:50. This model represents the NREL 5 MW reference wind turbine. The blades are not scaled geometrically, but instead have been adapted to produce Froude scaled thrust, in spite of much lower Reynolds numbers at reduced scale and when …

Introduction To Symposium On Birth Rights And Wrongs, By Dov Fox, Peter Schuck
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
This symposium consists of four essays by leading academic commentators developing their distinctive takes on the book, followed by a conclusion by Professor Fox containing detailed responses to each of them. This introduction provides a very brief, largely descriptive tour d’horizon of the commentators’ essays.
The Moral Cost Of Compensatory Damage Claims In Reproductive Negligence Cases, David Wasserman
The Moral Cost Of Compensatory Damage Claims In Reproductive Negligence Cases, David Wasserman
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
In this original and important work, Dov Fox makes a compelling case for rethinking and reformulating the way that negligent conduct by reproductive health professionals is understood, and in the way the harms resulting from that misconduct are rectified. He seeks a unified account of this negligence and harm that recognizes the “gravamen of the offense” as the wrongful interference with reproductive planning while also recognizing three distinct categories of adverse outcomes: deprived, imposed, and confounded procreation. Fox argues that the injuries in each category differ from each other sufficiently to justify the recognition of three distinct torts.
Birth Rights And Wrongs Extended, Reuven Brandt
Birth Rights And Wrongs Extended, Reuven Brandt
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
Dov Fox’s Birth Rights and Wrongs offers a largely compelling argument for expanding the scope of legal actions and remedies available to those whose reproductive choices are wrongfully frustrated by the actions of others. The dominant focus of the book is individuals who, due to the negligence and/or malice of medical professionals, suffer harms arising from reproduction imposed, denied, or confounded. A serious examination of these kinds of injuries is certainly appropriate given that medical professionals are increasingly involved in individuals’ reproductive plans and that serious harms may arise when desired medical interventions are improperly implemented. I will not take …

Birth Rights And Birth Wrongs Through A Common Law Lens: Why The No Liability Regime Is Likely To Endure, Richard A. Epstein
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
Dov Fox’s recent book, the aptly named Birth Rights and Wrongs, is, as its title suggests, a study of the stark conflicts that arise in the highly contested area of reproductive rights. Fox makes the powerful case that the legal protection of reproductive rights, in all their protean forms, is systematically under-protected relative to two key benchmarks: the standards of ordinary decency, and social expectations. In my view, he has an acute awareness of these failures. But his greatest strength is also his greatest weakness, as he systematically ignores the great successes wrought through the current system, as disjointed …

A doctor botches a vasectomy. Or says it’d be dangerous to keep a healthy pregnancy. Or misses a risk of passing along disease. Our laws do little to deter such reproductive negligence or compensate its victims. Some of this misconduct leaves people without the baby they desperately want. Other times, it foists on parents a child they’d set out to avoid. Or one with meaningfully different traits than what they were led to believe.
I call these three harms procreation deprived, procreation imposed, and procreation confounded.
