The Effects Of Activity-Based And Inquiry-Based Teaching Methods On Student Attitude And Perception Toward Geometry, Wade Hukriede
The Effects Of Activity-Based And Inquiry-Based Teaching Methods On Student Attitude And Perception Toward Geometry, Wade Hukriede
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
This quantitative action research project evaluated high school students’ attitude and perceptions toward geometry before and after two units that were taught. The first unit was taught using a more traditional style of teaching while the second method incorporated activity-based and inquiry-based lessons into a traditional method of teaching. The students were surveyed by using a modified version of Bauer’s (2008) Attitude Toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory. The survey was changed to focus on the students’ attitudes and perceptions toward geometry. Survey scores in the subscales: interest and utility, anxiety, intellectual accessibility, fear and emotional satisfaction were compared through …

Control Of Hvdc Bridges Under Light Load Conditions., E. El-Konyaly, Youssif Abed, Mahmoud Kandil
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The performance of a HVDC transmission system under light load conditions is investigated. Two types of control schemes are used , namely constant igintion delay and constant power factor. The study has been carried out as a digital simulation. An algorithm is designed to arrive at the results. It has been shown that a reactive power is needed to reduce the over voltages induced across the bridges. This reactive power requires more switching operation in case of ignition delay angle however smaller in magnitude than in case of power factor angle. It has been advised that for reliability of operations …

Stocker
A Case Study Of The Conflicts Experienced By Staff Nurses In A Medical-Surgical Setting, Susan J. Stocker
Dissertations
The United States is currently facing an unprecedented nursing shortage. The current shortage is being driven by much broader factors than previous shortages (Kimball & O'Neil, 2002). Efforts to deal with this impending crisis have focused on recruiting individuals into nursing with very little attention paid to retention. Job conflict among staff nurses has a significant inverse relationship with the level of job satisfaction (Gardner, 1992). Few research studies have examined the nature of conflict in nursing.
This case study sought to identify and describe the experiences of registered nurses in an acute care medical-surgical setting in order to identify …
The Lived-Experience Of Novice Nurse's Actualizing Clinical Reasoning In Academic Simulation, Mary Catherine Brinker
The Lived-Experience Of Novice Nurse's Actualizing Clinical Reasoning In Academic Simulation, Mary Catherine Brinker
Dissertations
The purpose of this existential-phenomenological study was to address the first-person perspective of what it is like to experience clinical reasoning during a simulation. It was not known how a novice nurse would describe the experience of actualizing clinical reasoning during the academic simulation experience. In order to maintain the firstperson perspective, all presuppositions were eliminated. There were no instruments used in the data collection process, and no theories or models that guided this research. The researcher integrated Amedeo Giorgi's method of analysis to discover the psychological acts of the first person (novice nurse) to address the unknown. The research …

State-Of-The-Art Of Thermal Control Solutions To Establish A Modular, Multi-Orbit Capable Spacecraft Thermal Management System Design Methodology, Robert C. Consolo Jr
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Today, the exploration and exploitation of space continues to become a more common occurrence. All types of spacecraft (S/C) utilize various types of thermal management solutions to mitigate the effects of thermal loading from the unforgiving vacuum of space. Without an appropriately designed thermal system, components on-board the S/C can experience failure or malfunction due to fluctuations in temperatures either beyond the designed operational parameters or unstable oscillating temperatures. The purpose of this study is to perform a comprehensive review of technologies available today that are being used for thermal management onboard S/C in addition to investigating the means to …
Numerical Simulation Of A Cryogenic Spray, Neel Kishorkumar Shah
Numerical Simulation Of A Cryogenic Spray, Neel Kishorkumar Shah
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Cryogenic sprays have many applications in modern engineering. Cooling of electronic equipment subject to high heat flows, surgical ablation of gastrointestinal mucosae or orbital maneuvering are a few examples of their versatility. However, the atomization of a cryogenic liquid is a complex process. During such an event, aerodynamic effects associated with secondary atomization are further affected by thermodynamic flashing. A better understanding of the characteristics of cryogenic sprays is then necessary to allow for improved design and optimization in applications. The overarching objective of this study is to document such characteristics. The numerical simulation was performed over cryogenic nitrogen spray …
In-Situ Monitoring Of Additive Manufacturing Using Digital Image Correlation, Martina Jani
In-Situ Monitoring Of Additive Manufacturing Using Digital Image Correlation, Martina Jani
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Advances in additive manufacturing over the past decade have led to applications in multiple fields. In particular, additive manufacturing answers the need for high flexibility in designing complex structures, however, the rapid thermal fluctuations during processing lead to numerous defects and processing-induced residual stresses. In this research, an in-situ approach using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is developed to monitor the deformation during the processing, and thereby analyze the formation of defects and residual stresses. DIC is a visual technique that compares the changes in speckle pattern in consecutive images of a specimen to determine the displacements and strains. This research …
Noise And Time Pressure Effects On Situation Awareness And Aviation Maintenance Tasks, Syaza R. M. Haris
Noise And Time Pressure Effects On Situation Awareness And Aviation Maintenance Tasks, Syaza R. M. Haris
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Aircraft maintenance technicians (AMTs) working in a line maintenance work setting are very susceptible to the deafening occupational noise from the airport vicinity or the maintenance machinery itself. Compared to a base maintenance working period, a line maintenance job requires AMTs to complete a task within a short time frame. The current study's objective is to determine if different noise levels and time pressure influence AMTs' performance and situation awareness (SA). Sixteen Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University students majoring in Aviation Maintenance Science participated in a within-subject experimental design. Each participant's performance, SA level, and perceived workload were measured during maintenance tasks …
Ecological Exposure And Effects Of Microplastics In Crabs Along The Pacific Coast, Dorothy A. Horn
Ecological Exposure And Effects Of Microplastics In Crabs Along The Pacific Coast, Dorothy A. Horn
Dissertations and Theses
Microplastics have been documented across the global oceans as an ubiquitous pollutant. Found in the water column, sediment, shorelines, estuaries, freshwater streams and rivers along with terrestrial soils, flora and fauna. The continuous input of plastic waste into the marine environment doesn't seem to be slowing as the amount of plastic created each year increases globally.
This study investigated (1) the effects of microplastic ingestion in the indicator species, the Pacific mole crab (Emerita analoga), testing the predator avoidance behavior, reproductive output and parasitism effects when an adult female gravid crab had ingested microplastics (2) adult mortality, hatching …
An Examination Of Nurses' Schedule Characteristics, Recovery From Work, And Well-Being, Sarah Elizabeth Van Dyck
An Examination Of Nurses' Schedule Characteristics, Recovery From Work, And Well-Being, Sarah Elizabeth Van Dyck
Dissertations and Theses
Recovery from work refers to the replenishment of energetic and affective resources depleted while meeting job demands, predominately conceptualized as a process that unfolds throughout the day. This study examined the shift work schedule demands presented by round-the-clock patient care needs on health care providers, and potential recovery opportunities during mid-shift meal and rest breaks. The cross-sectional data were collected via electronic questionnaire among registered nurses (N = 134) working in direct patient care roles in 24-hour healthcare organizations in the Northwestern United States (91.0% female-identified; mean age = 45.3 years). The main effects of adverse scheduling characteristics common …

Nature-Based Solutions In Environmental Planning: Ecosystem-Based Adaptations, Green Infrastructures, And Ecosystem Services To Promote Diversity In Urban Landscapes, Lorena Alves Carvalho Nascimento
Dissertations and Theses
Nature-based solutions encompass strategies that explore ecosystem-based adaptations, green infrastructures, and ecosystem services in environmental planning and landscape management. However, nature-based solutions do not always consider ecological values and perspectives from Black, Indigenous, and Global South population. This dissertation has three independent papers that explore the application of ecosystem-based adaptations, green infrastructures, and ecosystem services in communities unheard by environmental planning agencies. The first paper is a conceptual framework that used literature review and observations of current human-nature interactions to reflect how the criminalization, acculturation, and cultural appropriation of cultural ecosystem services have burdened Black and Indigenous identities. Recommendations for …

A Step-By-Step Guide To Implementing A Multidisciplinary Endocarditis Team, Sami El-Dalati, Daniel Cronin, James Riddell, Michael Shea, Richard L. Weinberg, Emily Stoneman, Twisha Patel, Kirra Ressler, George Michael Deeb
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Over the last several years multiple studies, primarily from European centers have demonstrated the clinical and outcomes benefits of multidisciplinary endocarditis teams. Despite this literature, adoption of this approach to patient care has been slower in the United States. While there is literature outlining the optimal composition of an endocarditis team, there is little information to guide providers as they attempt to transform practice from a fragmented, disjointed process to an efficient, collaborative care model. In this review, the authors will outline the steps they took to create and implement a successful multidisciplinary endocarditis team at the University of Michigan. …
Fighting Against Black Money By Offering Amnesty For Economic Development In Bangladesh: A Stigma Can Never Be A Beauty Spot, S M. Solaiman
Fighting Against Black Money By Offering Amnesty For Economic Development In Bangladesh: A Stigma Can Never Be A Beauty Spot, S M. Solaiman
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Black money is a global concern. However, black money has disproportionately affected Bangladesh. To combat the proliferation of black money in the country, successive governments of Bangladesh have offered amnesties to black money holders (BMHs) in contravention of the national Constitution, legislation, and international conventions. Nonetheless, responses to such incentives have been notably poor, mainly because the wrongdoers do not fear the superficial threat of law enforcement. This article examines the BMHs’ responses to amnesties so far and explains the substantial harm caused by such discriminatory favors, including increases in corruption, the price of real estate, money laundering, deposits by …
Does The Lack Of Binding Precedent In International Arbitration Affect Transparency In Arbitral Proceedings?, Emily F. Ariz
Does The Lack Of Binding Precedent In International Arbitration Affect Transparency In Arbitral Proceedings?, Emily F. Ariz
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
This note explores how the lack of binding precedent in both international commercial and investment arbitration affects transparency in arbitral proceedings. As arbitration increases in popularity, its deficiencies have become more apparent. The lack of binding precedent in arbitration is convenient in some ways, but problematic as it leaves arbitrators an immense amount of discretion when deciding cases. With many decisions unpublished to maintain confidentiality and those decisions that are published sometimes lack reasoning to support the award, transparency in arbitral proceedings is practically nonexistent. In recent years, there is a trend toward more transparency in certain types of arbitral …
Energetic Tradeoffs, Infection, And Immunity In Wild Chimpanzees Of Uganda And Tanzania, Sarah Renee Phillips
Energetic Tradeoffs, Infection, And Immunity In Wild Chimpanzees Of Uganda And Tanzania, Sarah Renee Phillips
Anthropology ETDs
Infectious disease is a primary source of mortality for most mammal species, but scientists have little understanding of factors driving variation in infection and immunity between individuals, populations, and species in the wild. Life history theory provides an evolutionary framework for delineating distribution of available energy to competing physiological demands, including growth, reproduction, and maintenance. Early life reproduction should be favored over late life survival, but, in long-lived species, reproductive success is strongly tied to survival to old age. Slower pace of reproduction could allow investment in immunity, reducing risk of morbidity and mortality to infectious disease. Additionally, several host …

Behaviour Of Rotating Field In Slip-Ring Induction Motors With Chopper Control., Hassan Abou-Tabl
Behaviour Of Rotating Field In Slip-Ring Induction Motors With Chopper Control., Hassan Abou-Tabl
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Stator currents of slip-ring induction motor having chopper control in the rotor circuit, are no more sinusoidal. The analysis of the air-gap resultant field , due to such currents , results in a different expression for the established rotating field. The derived expression is examined in order to study the rotating field behavior under chopper control. In addition to some of the well known behaviours , a new one had been distinguished and proved by constructing the geometrical pattern of the air-gap resultant field. An effective winding factor is introduced to give the effect of nonsinusoidal stator currents on the …
