Skin Bacterial Metacommunities Of San Francisco Bay Area Salamanders Are Structured By Host Genus And Habitat Quality., Shannon Buttimer, Obed Hernandez-Gomez, Erica Bree Rosenblum

Host-associated microbial communities can influence physiological processes of macroorganisms, including contributing to infectious disease resistance. For instance, some bacteria that live on amphibian skin produce antifungal compounds that inhibit two lethal fungal pathogens, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). Therefore, differences in microbiome composition among host species or populations within a species can contribute to variation in susceptibility to Bd/Bsal. This study applies 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize the skin bacterial microbiomes of three widespread terrestrial salamander genera native to the western United States. Using a metacommunity structure analysis, we identified dispersal barriers for these influential bacteria between salamander …

The language of the circus and dance movement highlight the physical potential of the acrobatic body as performers are confronted by a landscape in transformation. Circus and danced movement induce a slow metamorphosis of humans and organic matter, as performers confront nature, accompany it, dodge it, collide, and merge with it. Nothing here has a beginning or an end, but is part of a continuum.

Russia’S Constitutional Dictatorship: A Brief History, Cindy Skach
Russia’S Constitutional Dictatorship: A Brief History, Cindy Skach
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Why is the word impeachment so terrible? After all, if the Congress passed such a motion it would have no legal force. A popularly elected president could not be removed from power by the Congress, especially this Congress, which had long ago lost the people’s trust.1
Voter Id: Combating Voter Fraud Or Disenfranchising? A Comprehensive Analysis Of Voter Id Laws, Native American Disenfranchisement, And Their Intersection, Will Hyland
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
This note discusses the contentious issue of voter ID laws and their ability to disproportionately affect various racial and ethnic groups, with specific attention paid to such laws’ effects on Native Americans. Since the 2000 election catastrophe and subsequent changes to our election system, voter ID laws have become a hot-button issue. Many states have enacted voter ID laws in the years since, some of which have resulted in restrictive voting requirements that may result in disproportionately discriminatory voter disenfranchisement. This note willa first give a general overview of the complicated and convoluted recent development voter ID laws, a history …

Antonio Caballero: Conflicting U.S. Anti-Terrorism Law And U.S. International Bankruptcy Law, Jordan M. Zornes
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Antonio Caballero sought retribution for his father’s kidnap and murder in the way Congress has made it possible: the American Court System. Caballero obtained a default monetary judgment against Colombian guerrilla forces, but as expected in collecting against a terrorist organization, it was an uphill battle. When finding attachable assets, Caballero must act fast, but in the present case, an international bankruptcy proceeding sought to thwart his legitimate efforts to satisfy his judgment. The question is: should Caballero win in “race to the courthouse” fashion, or does the international bankruptcy stay lead to an orderly distribution of assets? This note …

Legal Education Reform In Africa: Time To Revisit The Two-Tier Legal Education System, Okechukwu Oko
Legal Education Reform In Africa: Time To Revisit The Two-Tier Legal Education System, Okechukwu Oko
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
The two-tier legal education system has become increasingly ineffective by virtue of the evolution of changes in legal practice and Africa’s unique conditions and circumstances. The problem is rooted in the fact that some African countries adopted the two-tier legal education system on the assumption that what worked in Britain offered a prescription for success in Africa. However, the two-tier legal education system has been ineffective in Africa because the infrastructure—pupilage, apprenticeship, continuing legal education—that complements and anneals it is not widely available in Africa. Where these elements exist, they tend to be frail and unreliable. Africa’s urgent challenge is …

Selective Oxidation Of Alkenes In Air Catalyzed By Mn3o4 Nanoparticles, Brojo Kishor Shachib Dhali
Selective Oxidation Of Alkenes In Air Catalyzed By Mn3o4 Nanoparticles, Brojo Kishor Shachib Dhali
Dissertations and Theses
Catalytic oxidation is a process where compounds are oxidized using catalysts. Solid catalysts exhibit several advantages over homogeneous systems, such as catalyst recovery and excellent stability. Various supported transition-metal oxides (for example: CuO, ZnO, CeO2, Fe2O3 and WO3), metal nanoparticles (for example: Pd and Ru) and polyoxometalate clusters (for example: [W10O32]4-, [Mn2ZnW(ZnW9O34)2]10- and [XW12O40]n- (X = P, Si)) have been applied to selective oxidation of organic compounds, but high associated product conversion still remains a challenge. Recently, a number of materials containing Mn3O4 have been used successfully in different catalytic applications, such as degradation of phenols, reduction of nitrobenzenes, and …

Does Digital Literacy Empower Adolescent Girls In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Salima Meherali, Komal Abdul Rahim, Sandra Campbell, Zohra S. Lassi
School of Nursing & Midwifery
Background: The vast majority (90%) of the world's adolescents aged 10-19 live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs); and in those resource-limited settings, girls face distinct challenges across multiple health, social, and economic domains. Gender equality and girls' empowerment are key goals in their own right and are central to all other development goals. Digital literacy is a great enabler for the empowerment of young girls. This systematic review aims to assess the range and nature of digital literacy interventions implemented to empower adolescent girls in LMICs and identify evidence about adolescent girls' access and use of digital technologies in …

A Distance-Based Clustering Framework For Categorical Time Series: A Case Study In Episodes Of Care Healthcare Delivery System, Lauren Staples
A Distance-Based Clustering Framework For Categorical Time Series: A Case Study In Episodes Of Care Healthcare Delivery System, Lauren Staples
Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations
Understanding how compensation structures influence overall healthcare costs is a central issue in health economics. Episodes of Care (EoC) is a compensation structure that bundles payments for healthcare interventions that belong to a well-defined health event. Since the variation of clinical pathways can drive the cost of healthcare, this research uses sequences of medical billing codes in Perinatal Episodes of Care claims data to study the extent of that variation by equating it to the number of reproducible clusters found. This research proposes a methodological framework to detect reproducible clusters in an unsupervised problem where the true number of clusters …

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 16, 2021) – Jacob Nelson’s parents owned and operated a hardware store in his hometown of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, but rather than follow their footsteps into the family business, he always felt driven to provide a different kind of service to the community.
Nelson once thought he might become a physician, but decided that he wanted a different type of interaction with patients. Today, the U.S. Navy veteran and the first in his family to attend college is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at East Tennessee State University’s Sevierville campus.
