Parental Perceptions Of Family Management Styles In Families With A Child With Asthma, Annette Hines Dec 2021

Parental Perceptions Of Family Management Styles In Families With A Child With Asthma, Annette Hines

Dissertations

Asthma is the most common chronic illness among children in the United States, and families who have a child with asthma face daily challenges to maintaining a normal family life. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed that studied four risk factors and four protective factors derived from the literature that impact these families, in order to better understand how nurses can meet the health care needs of the children with asthma and their families. Knafl's (1990, 1996) family management styles framework was applied as the theoretical framework of the study, and the concept of normalization was measured using the Family …

Hit The Lights On Your Way Out, Ryan Zimmerman Dec 2021

Hit The Lights On Your Way Out, Ryan Zimmerman

Theses

Artifacts of industry remain scattered throughout the American rustbelt. A region built and reliant upon manufacturing, destined to fail when companies found themselves in jeopardy. Jobs came and went, businesses folded. What remains in their place are vacant factories, warehouses, and the workforce itself. This area of the country is where my life began and where I have found myself once again. Growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, part of a family that endured this cycle of ups and downs, I have a certain familiarity and fondness for this post-industrial landscape and its inherent struggles. "Hit the Lights on Your Way …

Task Classification During Visual Search Using Classic Machine Learning And Deep Learning, Devangi Vilas Chinchankar

Master's Projects

In an average human life, the eyes not only passively scan visual scenes, but most times end up actively performing tasks including, but not limited to, searching, comparing, and counting. As a result of the advances in technology, we are observing a boost in the average screen time. Humans are now looking at an increasing number of screens and in turn images and videos. Understanding what scene a user is looking at and what type of visual task is being performed can be useful in developing intelligent user interfaces, and in virtual reality and augmented reality devices. In this research, …

Nitrogenase Iron Protein Classification Using Cnn Neural Network, Amer Rez Dec 2021

Nitrogenase Iron Protein Classification Using Cnn Neural Network, Amer Rez

Master's Projects

The nitrogenase iron protein (NifH) is extensively used to study nitrogen fixation, the ecologically vital process of reducing atmospheric nitrogen to a bioavailable form. The discovery rate of novel NifH sequences is high, and there is an ongoing need for software tools to mine NifH records from the GenBank repository. Since record annotations are unreliable, because they contain errors, classifiers based on sequence alone are required. The ARBitrator classifier is highly successful but must be initialized by extensive manual effort. A Deep Learning approach could substantially reduce manual intervention. However, attempts to build a character-based Deep Learning NifH classifier were …

Mrna-Sequencing Pipeline For Differential Gene Expression Analysis, Crystal Han

Master's Projects

Endothelial cells (ECs) line the insides of blood vessels and play a key role in the coagulation and vascular repair system. Under normal circumstances, ECs are constantly expressing anticoagulants to prevent clots and maintain healthy blood flow. But when there is an injury to the vessel, endothelial cells become centrally involved in orchestrating the complex series of events that would lead to the clotting of the wound. Thus, ECs are dynamic and respond accordingly based on changes in their local environment. Unfortunately, endothelial cells can sometimes misinterpret cues from the environment and initiate coagulation when there is no vessel damage …

Diabetic Education In An Uninsured Patient Population, Amanda Whistler

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

Patient education is an important factor in the management of Type 2 Diabetes. Successful outcomes can be causally related to proper patient education. Many times, patients are left with more questions than answers about their newly diagnosed condition. Some groups of patients are affected by prediabetes and diabetes more than other groups. Differences in health status or access to health care among racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic groups are referred to as health disparities. This is a major concern in the United States for health care providers.

A spreadsheet was used to record the blood glucose levels of each …

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in children. Over the past twenty years, research on the disease and its characteristics and treatment options has grown exponentially. The first-line pharmacologic treatment of ADHD is stimulants, which have a response rate of ~70%. With the support of four phase 3 studies involving more than 1,000 pediatric patients 6–17 years old, the FDA has approved the non-stimulant, serotonin-norepinephrine modulating agent (SNMA) viloxazine in an extended-release capsule (viloxazine ER) for treatment of ADHD in children aged 6–17. Viloxazine modulates serotonergic activity as a selective 5-HT22B receptor antagonist and 5-HT2C …

It’S Hapi Hour: An Action Plan On Preventing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries, Emira Maureen A. Romero Dec 2021

It’S Hapi Hour: An Action Plan On Preventing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries, Emira Maureen A. Romero

Master's Projects and Capstones

Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPIs) are detrimental to both the hospital and the patient as they are costly, painful, and can lead to further infection and an increased length of stay. Although this problem is seen across the country, this action plan focuses on a microsystem (i.e. medical-surgical telemetry unit) in Hospital A in the San Francisco Bay Area. The target population includes medical-surgical telemetry patients at high risk for HAPIs (i.e. Braden score <18, moisture/mobility scores <2, patients with devices at risk for device-related pressure injuries). The proposed intervention is an evidence-based HAPI prevention bundle that includes utilization of wound care champions and turn teams, increasing attendance of daily huddles, implementing a standardized algorithm for escalation and documentation, and reinforcement of evidence-based HAPI prevention measures. Effectiveness of this bundle will be measured through chart audits, nursing questionnaires, and staff interviews. These measures will be conducted 12 months post-implementation and findings will be compared to the baseline data in order to investigate whether there is a reduction in HAPI incidence. Since this project is currently in the Study phase of the proposed Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycle, this action plan concludes with recommendations of how the team can continue to move forward in addressing the project’s specific aim.

AIDET and commit to sit are ideal tools for addressing those deficits.

Context: The microsystem being addressed is an outpatient surgery unit that specialized in general surgery for the pediatric population. The pediatric population that the …

Poor Acclimation To Experimental Field Drought In Subalpine Forest Tree Seedlings, Alex Goke, Patrick H. Martin Dec 2021

Poor Acclimation To Experimental Field Drought In Subalpine Forest Tree Seedlings, Alex Goke, Patrick H. Martin

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The ability of tree species to acclimate and tolerate projected increases in drought frequency and intensity has fundamental implications for future forest dynamics with climate change. Inquiries to date on the drought tolerance capacities of tree species, however, have focused almost exclusively on mature trees with scant in situ work on seedlings, despite the central role that regeneration dynamics play in forest responses to changing conditions. We subjected naturally established seedlings of co-dominant subalpine conifer species (Abies lasiocarpa and Picea engelmannii) in the southern Rocky Mountains to 2 years of in situ summer precipitation exclusion, simulating summer drought …

Prediction Equations To Determine Induced Force On Reinforcing Elements Due To Laterally Loaded Piles Behind Mse Wall And Lateral Load Test On Dense Sand, Pedro David Garcia Montesinos

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers performed 35 full-scale lateral load tests on piles driven within the reinforcement zone of a mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSE wall). Data defining the induced tensile force on the reinforcements during lateral pile loading was used to develop multi-linear regression equations to predict the induced tensile force. Equations were developed by previous researchers that did not consider the diameter of the pile, the fixed head condition, relative compaction, or cyclic loading. The purpose of this research was to include this tensile force data and develop prediction equations that considered these variables. Additionally, a full-scale lateral load test was performed …

Effective Cancer Detection Using Higher-Order Genome Architecture And Chromatin Interactions, My Chung Dec 2021

Effective Cancer Detection Using Higher-Order Genome Architecture And Chromatin Interactions, My Chung

Master's Projects

Cancer is a complex disease which requires interactions between cell-intrinsic alterations and tumor microenvironment. The connection between epigenetics and genomic structure plays a key role in chromatin interaction which promotes enhancer-promoter interactions for transcriptional activities. Alterations of chromatin states in oncogenic signaling pathway potentially cause cancer cell-intrinsic changes and inappropriate instructions to normal cell cycles, leading to abnormal cell growth. Resulting phenotypic changes are correlated to underlying changes in higher-order chromatin structure such as topologically associating domains (TADs) and compartments. In cancer cells, TAD structure is usually altered to facilitate the communication between enhancers and promoters in addition to higher …
