Finding Aids

The Laine-Buset Family Collection consists of 13 photographs, two news articles, a leather bound Little Blue Book, and an Abraham Lincoln pamphlet. Several hundred Little Blue Books, published in Girard, Kansas by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, were also donated and added to the library’s Little Blue Book Collection.

Frank E. Laine (1909 - 1999) and Della Buset (1910 - 1992) grew up in the mining communities in Crawford County, Kansas, attending schools in Arma, Kansas. In 1938 they married. Della worked as a teacher in Crawford County schools, after attending what is now Pittsburg State University.

The Lillian Knadle Collection consists of personal correspondence, photographs, sampler, genealogy records, maps, and other miscellaneous materials.

Ann (Meats) Long was born in 1836 in Burghill, Herefordshire, United Kingdom. She came with her family to the United States around 1848. Ann married McHenry Long and they lived in Benton, Missouri until her death in 1900. Her granddaughter, Lillian Eureka Long was born in 1905 in Cass County, Missouri. Lillian attended the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) and afterwards worked as a teacher in Independence, Kansas. Lillian married Harold P. Hall (1893 - 1950), and after his …

Finding Aids

The Isaac Tharpe collection consists of personal correspondence, personal writings, account books, sermons, essays, photographs, legal documents, and other miscellaneous materials related to Isaac Tharp.

Isaac Tharp was born in 1837 in Ohio. Tharp married Abigail Adam Miller (b. 1840, d. 1928) around 1860. They moved from Bushnell, Illinois eventually settling in Monmouth, Kansas during 1865 and 1866. The Tharp family were homesteaders claiming land in the new state of Kansas. Isaac was a farmer, store owner, and Methodist Episcopal preacher. They had a total of eight children. Isaac Tharp died in 1883.

NXS began as an experimental bilingual school in a major urban city in Taiwan. Over its twenty-year history, the school transitioned from offering English language instruction for local students to a fully WASC accredited and IB authorized World School. The foreign staff grew from a few staff to comprising two-thirds of the 150-teaching faculty. Despite the size and potential impact of foreign teachers, they have no voice in the school, are excluded from setting the direction of the school, and are largely absent from the life of the school community. Junggar Basin is a typical arid inland region in the northern temperate zone of the Earth. The surrounding high mountains form runoff, which flows into the basin and develops oasis. Oasis and desert are interdependent. Oasis needs to leach out its naturally accumulated salts through drainage. This drainage provides water and nutrients to desert vegetation. Desert vegetation, in turn, provides an ecological protection for oasis. Hence, oasis and desert have a symbiotic relationship. With excessive exploitation of land and water resources with water-saving technologies, salts cannot be leached out of the oasis region anymore. As a result, the groundwater level …

While the adult multiracial population in the United States accounts for approximately 6.9 % of Americans, current growth trends suggest that numbers will triple within the next 40 years. Evidence suggests that Asian multiracial and Black multiracial groups are emergent racial categories, yet little research exists on dual minority populations. Premise for this qualitative study stems from my prior research on Black Asian American identity development that revealed an emergent theme of hypersexualization experienced by Black Asian American women. How does status affect foreign policy outcomes? Scholars have long argued that status is a salient foreign policy driver and that states even fight for status, but there is no consensus on how to think about this relationship. I propose that unpacking the link between status and role in international relations can help scholars analyze how status shapes national security outcomes. I illustrate the usefulness of this framework on the processes leading to Australia’s intervention in the Solomon Islands. The materials used to make contact lenses have evolved drastically, but ultimately resulted in a specific plastic, silicone-derived hydrogel, which provides maximal comfort and clear vision, while also maintaining the eye health of the user. Manufacturers have been hesitant to adopt the Internet of Things (IoT) due to a lack of understanding of factors related to IoT adoption. This correlational study uses a combination of diffusion of innovation theory and technology–organization–environment framework to examine if a relationship exists between relative advantage, complexity, compatibility, technology readiness, top management support, firm size, competitive pressure, and regulatory support and intent to adopt IoT in U.S. manufacturing organizations. A sample of 168 IT leaders was used. Developing suitable material precursors of reduced metal films plays an important role inflexible electronics. We introduce a relatively low-temperature sintering liquid material that may be used to pattern a conductive layer. The liquid material is made of oxidized metal carboxylate salts along with liquid amines or carboxylic acids. When heated above ca. 220 C, this material spontaneously decomposes into reduced metal and various gas-phase products. Inideal (albeit not this) cases, this yields an adherent, electrically conducting perfect metal mirror.Such materials, inks if you will, conserve metal and plate only where deposited, thus meeting an important ecological goal of metal conservation. …

Micro-mobility has become a growing market that has altered transportation withincities. While helping people reach their destination efficiently while using fewer fossil fuels and resources, e-scooters lack tailored safety protocol. Using depth and ego-motion machine learning estimation through a live video stream, we hope to identify possible oncoming hazard for e-scooter users. To approach this problem, we tested methods that removed the pose network with a scaling transformation which was derived via linear regression. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are affected by large-scale climate variability. We investigate how ARs and snowpack are shaped by arctic oscillation (AO) by examining the synoptic conditions and characteristics of ARs and snowpack in the different phases of AO using forty years (1980-2019) of Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) data, Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA2) reanalysis data, and in-situ observation data over the eastern Pacific and western U.S. region. More precipitation is found in lower latitudes during negative AO months and farther north in latitude during positive AO months. These are associated with …

According to the Implicit Leadership Theory, leadership roles are assigned in the process of social construction and depend upon the level of congruence with the cognitive representation of a leader. Previous studies show that this cognitive representation is much more likely to involve a leader being a male rather than a female. The article presents the results of an experiment aimed at tentatively verifying whether the use of the feminine forms could increase the cognitive availability of the representation of a woman as a leader.
