State Administrative Review Of Local Constraints On Housing Development: Improving The California Model, Christopher S. Elmendorf, Eric Biber, Paavo Monkkonen, Moira O’Neill
State Administrative Review Of Local Constraints On Housing Development: Improving The California Model, Christopher S. Elmendorf, Eric Biber, Paavo Monkkonen, Moira O’Neill
Faculty Scholarship
Starting in the 1970s, the West Coast states coalesced around roughly similar responses to the problem of excessive local restrictions on housing supply. Local governments were charged with making plans to accommodate projected population growth, subject to review and approval by a state agency. In California, a city’s housing plan must also analyze, mitigate, and remove “constraints” to the development of housing in general. This component of the plan has received little attention, and, according to a recent report of the State Auditor, it hasn’t accomplished much. We argue that it could accomplish much more—if the state housing agency develops …
Phylogeny And Systematics Of The Superfamily Diplostomoidea Poirier, 1886 (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda), Tyler Joseph Achatz
Phylogeny And Systematics Of The Superfamily Diplostomoidea Poirier, 1886 (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda), Tyler Joseph Achatz
Theses and Dissertations
The Diplostomoidea is a large superfamily of digeneans which possess a unique holdfast organ. Members of the superfamily are distributed worldwide and are known to parasitize a wide variety of animals, both invertebrates and vertebrates. In some cases, diplostomoideans have been associated with diseases such as ocular diplostomiasis and ‘black spot’ disease in fishes. The taxonomic and systematic history of diplostomoideans is complex and includes numerous revisions based on morphology and host associations. Prior to this study, the Diplostomoidea included 6 families and 16 subfamilies. Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed the Diplostomidae and the Strigeidae to be non-monophyletic and …
Numerical Simulations Of Hydraulic Fracturing Through Perforated Wellbores, Omar Akash
Numerical Simulations Of Hydraulic Fracturing Through Perforated Wellbores, Omar Akash
Theses and Dissertations
Unconventional reservoirs such as tight formations and plays, are known by their ultra-low permeability. To economically produce hydrocarbon from these reservoirs, technology-based solutions need to be deployed. hydraulic fracturing is a widely accepted and applied technology for successful development of unconventional reservoirs.
The fractures initiated near wellbore can have different lengths, widths, and heights. As a result, a complex fracture network is expected to be formed near wellbore. The hydraulic fracturing design is related to several parameters. Some of these parameters cannot be altered such as the geological attributes and mechanical properties of the targeted formation and the field in-situ …
Role Of Gravin/Akap12 Variants In Regulating Endothelial Cell Behavior, Ashrifa Ali
Role Of Gravin/Akap12 Variants In Regulating Endothelial Cell Behavior, Ashrifa Ali
Theses and Dissertations
A functional endothelium must maintain an equilibrium among processes such as endothelial cell (EC) migration, barrier function and angiogenesis. The endothelium is constantly exposed to external factors that that result in a complex network of signaling wired to several possible cellular outcomes. A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) have a critical role in regulating cell signaling by providing spatial and temporal control of signaling proteins to increase downstream target specificity. Several studies have linked gravin (also called SSeCKS or AKAP12), an AKAP, to migration, barrier function, and angiogenesis. However, the functional significance of each gravin variant in ECs has not been investigated …
Development Of Image Processing Techniques For Core-Scale Characterization And Synthetic 3d-Printed Core Replicas, Ahmed Galal Alqassaby Almetwally
Development Of Image Processing Techniques For Core-Scale Characterization And Synthetic 3d-Printed Core Replicas, Ahmed Galal Alqassaby Almetwally
Theses and Dissertations
Fluid-flow physics in porous media has been continually simplified by assuming isotropic homogeneous media with minimal rock-fluid interactions. Such simplification did not reflect reality and retained the ability to understand the flow behavior essence in unconventional reservoirs. The developed physics should be reevaluated on ideal porous media, indeed, which has minimal geometrical and interaction uncertainties. Therefore, image processing techniques were utilized to processs the CT scans of core samples to construct ideal 3D-printed replicas for coreflooding experiments and simulation models. The results from both were then compared for vcalidation and cross check. Methods, Procedures, Process: Grayscale CT-scan of a Berea …

Development Of A Dynamic Force Sensor, Olusola Andrew Bolaniran
Theses and Dissertations
Sensors are employed for various applications in different industries. Chief of these applications is in the process and equipment monitoring. Most sensors used in the equipment monitoring are mostly after-market devices. This research answered the question of how can we include the condition monitoring of equipment into the design phase of the equipment. This research developed a dynamic force sensor using a PolyVinyliDene Fluoride (PVDF) film. The piezoelectric film attached to a fixed-fixed substrate which serves to support film and the properties of which the sensor equations were based. The sensor was tested in the laboratory by subjecting it to …
Intron Retention Of Jarid2 Regulates Gene Expression During Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination, Jacob Robert Bierstedt
Intron Retention Of Jarid2 Regulates Gene Expression During Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination, Jacob Robert Bierstedt
Theses and Dissertations
Temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) is the developmental process in which cell fate decisions in the bipotential gonads are influenced by temperature and drive the gonad toward one of two distinct organs, an ovary or testis. In species with TSD, temperature establishes the gene expression patterns required for cell fate decisions and gonad differentiation. However, the precise mechanism that temperature regulates gene expression is unknown. Here we have shown that Jarid2, which encodes a Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2) accessory protein, exhibits temperature-dependent intron retention that results in three distinct transcripts encoding distinct proteins with functional similarities and differences in TSD. …

Literacy As A Means Of Stress Relief In A Domestic Violence Homeless Shelter: Listening To Childrens' Voices, Vonda L. Dahl
Theses and Dissertations
It is well-documented that children who experience housing insecurities, transience and homelessness, whether short or long term, may suffer from anxiety and/or chronic stress (Perry, 1997, 2004; Jensen, 2009). What is less known, or researched, are ways to address that anxiety through the efforts of volunteers and other non-custodial persons and the simple act of reading a book together. This study is social science in nature with a focus on phenomenological research with children that explores the affective value that a literacy event may have on a child’s perceptions of their own level of stress. Participants were recruited from a …

Systemic Veterinary Parasitcides For Residual Malaria Vector Control In Central America, Staci Michele Dreyer
Systemic Veterinary Parasitcides For Residual Malaria Vector Control In Central America, Staci Michele Dreyer
Theses and Dissertations
Malaria continues to be one of the most severe public health concerns worldwide. The malaria parasite, Plasmodium, is transmitted from person to person through the mosquito vector Anopheles. Vector control is a crucial element of anti-malarial campaigns and works best when there is thorough knowledge about an Anopheles vector’s biology and behavior in a given region. To fully eradicate malaria, new vector control strategies must be developed that exploit the behaviors of different vector species. One promising strategy to target vectors that primarily bite outdoors and display generalist feeding behaviors (zoophagic) is the use of veterinary systemic parasiticides. Veterinary parasiticides …

Landslide Remediation Methodology For Low-Volume Roads In North-Central Pennsylvania, Will Ned Brandenberger
Theses and Dissertations
The study of landslides in north-central Pennsylvania is not well developed, and remediation methodology for landslide-prone and low-volume forest roads in the region can benefit from targeted and innovative engineering design strategies. Rockery walls may be an underutilized remediation methodology for low-volume forest roads in north-central Pennsylvania. Two landslide remediation projects in north-central Pennsylvania within the Lycoming and Sullivan counties can provide valuable insight into the existing methodology associated with low-volume forest road remediation in north-central Pennsylvania and outline a potentially under-utilized methodology that may improve engineering design, construction efficiency, and result quality. A review of the two landslide remediation …
Modulation Of The Hyperfine Coupling In A Tbpc2 Single-Molecule Magnet With Electric Fields, David Fehr
Modulation Of The Hyperfine Coupling In A Tbpc2 Single-Molecule Magnet With Electric Fields, David Fehr
Theses and Dissertations
In theory, a quantum computer can do everything a classical computer can do, and more. This is possible because of the principal difference between their respective fundamental units of computation. Classical computers use bits that can take on values of 0 or 1, but quantum computers use quantum bits, called qubits, that can take on values of 0, 1, or any combination of 0 and 1 by exploiting the rules of quantum mechanics. However, this quantum nature is extremely fragile and therefore it is imperative that qubits are protected from their environment. Conversely, qubits cannot be so isolated that their …
The Production Of Bio-Based Chemicals And Materials From Renewable Sources, Ian Foerster
The Production Of Bio-Based Chemicals And Materials From Renewable Sources, Ian Foerster
Theses and Dissertations
Widespread concern with the impacts of global emissions and climate change plays an active role in driving global renewable markets, developing scientific research communities, and setting environmental pollution regulations. Efforts to confront this rise in global emissions are primarily focused on the reduction and replacement of non-renewable fuels and materials. It has become increasingly apparent that reducing global greenhouse gas emissions will require more than just the replacement of fossil fuels, but the development of technologies to convert a diverse set of renewable feedstocks into fuels, chemicals, and materials. The goal of the work documented herein, was to expand the breadth …

Global Climate Change is arguably one of the most important global crises of our times. Global Climate Change is the result of increasing global ambient temperatures around the world. These increased temperature changes have been impacting all aspects of human life and activity as wells as impacting all biological and physical systems of Earth. The primary cause of Global Climate Change are anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide and other Greenhouse Gases. Fossil fuel combustion is a primary source of these emissions. The initiation of anthropogenic Global Climate Change has been scientifically traced back to the Industrial Revolution. From the Industrial …
Riemann Integration In Nqa+: The Role Of Geometric Subdivision And Its Consequences For The Continuum, Matthew J. Lorenz
Riemann Integration In Nqa+: The Role Of Geometric Subdivision And Its Consequences For The Continuum, Matthew J. Lorenz
Theses and Dissertations
In the mid 1990s mathematicians Rolando Chuaqui and Patrick Suppes developed a constructive axiomatic system of nonstandard analysis. This project, now called NQA+ (later developed as Elementary Recursive Nonstandard Analysis by Suppes and Richard Sommer) is notable because it has a finitary consistency proof with which we can develop a large fragment of infinitesimal analysis, which they claim represents the mathematical practice characteristic of physics in a manner that does justice to the geometric intuition that facilitated, for example, 17th century indivisible methods. In this thesis I develop the authors’ formulation of geometric subdivision and of the integral as a …
Impacts Of Vertical Grid Resolution On The Representation Of A Convective Environment, Caitlyn Mensch
Impacts Of Vertical Grid Resolution On The Representation Of A Convective Environment, Caitlyn Mensch
Theses and Dissertations
In a pre-convective environment, modeled atmospheric conditions can be presented as discrete parameters, which serve as valuable resources both in forecasting potential severe weather events and also in assessing changes in convective potential over time. However, the value of these parameters may depend on the vertical resolution of the simulation that is used to do the calculation. Upper-air radiosonde sounding data from various research campaigns (e.g., PECAN, DC3, TRMM-LBA, etc.) in both midlatitude and tropical convective regimes are analyzed and later interpolated to the pressure levels in a range of atmospheric reanalysis and operational models. Indices such as CAPE, CIN, …
Photometric And Astrometric Analysis Of Three Near-Earth Asteroids, Steven D. Newcomb
Photometric And Astrometric Analysis Of Three Near-Earth Asteroids, Steven D. Newcomb
Theses and Dissertations
Asteroid astrometry can provide precise information on an object’s orbital position and motion, while lightcurve photometry can help determine its rotational spin rate, its shape, and the possible presence of a binary satellite object in orbit around it.
This thesis therefore reports the astrometric and photometric study of three near-Earth objects (NEOs): 68347 (2001 KB67), 494999 (2010 JU39), and 455432 (2003 RP8). Because NEOs represent a record of the early solar system, serve as possible sources for minable material, and sometimes present an impact hazard to the planet Earth, the study of these asteroids is important for understanding their orbital …
"The Last Major Front": Special Education's Transition To Adulthood And North Dakota, Matthew David Mccleary
"The Last Major Front": Special Education's Transition To Adulthood And North Dakota, Matthew David Mccleary
Theses and Dissertations
The thesis examines the development and implementation of special education’s transition policy in the United States and North Dakota from the 1980s to the 1990s. Researchers have primarily sought to further evidence-based practices in preparing adolescents with disabilities for adulthood, but the history of this effort has rarely been discussed. In the late 20th century, policymakers, researchers, and educators attempted to turn around negative socio-economic outcomes for people with disabilities by helping youth with disabilities and their families plan for the future and get connected to post-school services and employment. Assumptions about people with disabilities influenced transition programming and the …
An Evaluation Of Ci Asteroid Regolith As A Plant Growth Medium For Space Crop Production, Steven Jon Russell
An Evaluation Of Ci Asteroid Regolith As A Plant Growth Medium For Space Crop Production, Steven Jon Russell
Theses and Dissertations
Asteroids are small, undifferentiated bodies that materialized during the formation epoch of the solar system. With a concerted effort to establish a long-term presence in space, crewed missions to asteroids should not be ignored. A critical aspect of human missions is self-sustainability, primarily growing crops via in-situ resource utilization. CI carbonaceous asteroids are a primitive type of asteroid that retain elements found during that early solar system formation. More importantly, the regolith on these asteroids contains soluble elemental nutrients, such as phosphorous and potassium, that crops can use for growth and development. This thesis focuses on the ability of CI …
The Impact Of Social Anxiety On Co-Witness Suggestibility, Susan Schober
The Impact Of Social Anxiety On Co-Witness Suggestibility, Susan Schober
Theses and Dissertations
Misleading post-event information, especially presented through co-witness discussion, has consistently shown to be a powerful way to alter a witness’s memory for an event. Less is known about how misleading co-witness information affects those with specific individual difference traits, however. The current study analyzed the impact of social anxiety on susceptibility to co-witness misinformation and memory conformity (i.e., co-witness suggestibility). Participants viewed a short film of a simulated home robbery and some discussed the film with a confederate posing as a co-witness. During the discussion, the confederate introduced either accurate or misleading information about events in the film. After the …

Sensitization To A Milk Allergen Induces Differential Behavioral And Neurological Responses In Allergic C57bl/6j And Balb/Cj Mice, Nicholas Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Studies have highlighted an association between food allergies and neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Though the precise mechanism behind this relationship is unknown, it marks a potential novel therapeutic strategy outside of traditional neuropharmacological intervention. Food allergy is a heterogeneous disorder of the immune system characterized by an immune response that occurs reproducibly to a given food. Chronic allergen exposure in patients with mild or non-anaphylactic food allergies may cause or exacerbate psychiatric conditions. However, the variability in food allergies due to factors like genetic background introduces selection bias for individuals with overt anaphylactic …
