Expanding On The Involvement Of Primary Cilia In Neurological Function Through Observing Eeg/Emg Changes In Different Genotypic Mice, Gabriella M. Palermo

Honors Theses and Capstones

Primary cilia have been known to regulate neurological functions, as primary cilia exist on astrocytes and neurons in the mature brain. More is being discovered about primary cilia and their role in the vertebrate nervous system; however, little is known about their functions and molecular pathways in the mature brain. There also lacks methods of diagnosis for primary cilia-related defects and diseases. The purpose of this project was to provide more information on the involvement of cilia in the neurological functions and offer a potential means for diagnosis of cilia-related disorders by comparing the EEG and EMG signals of wildtype …

Public Monuments In Changing Societies And Political Orders, Jake M. Connolly Jan 2021

Public Monuments In Changing Societies And Political Orders, Jake M. Connolly

Honors Theses and Capstones

Abstract

This thesis looks at the ongoing issues and debates involving monuments and more specifically Confederate monuments. This issue picked up steam in 2015-2017 with events such as Dylan Roof’s church shooting and the Charlottesville rally and fatal car-ramming. In these times, society and leaders have turned their eyes to monuments. A conversation developed on whether these monuments are necessary and if it is appropriate to celebrate figures who fought for the cause of slavery. Proponents argued that it was a celebration of Southern heritage, the Lost Cause, and the right of self-determination and seceding from an unjust government. Others …

Increased Abundance Of The Common Raven Within The Ranges Of Greater And Gunnison Sage-Grouse: Influence Of Anthropogenic Subsidies And Fire, Jonathan B. Dinkins, Lindsey R. Perry, Jeffrey L. Beck, Jimmy D. Taylor Jan 2021

Taylor

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The common raven (Corvus corax; raven) is native to North America and has increased in abundance, especially throughout western North America, during the last century. Human subsidies have facilitated raven dispersal into less suitable habitats and enabled these populations to maintain higher annual survival and reproduction. Concomitantly, overabundant raven populations are impacting other native at-risk species such as the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and potentially the Gunnison sage-grouse (C. minimus). Using Breeding Bird Survey data from 1995–2014, we evaluated raven count data to quantitatively describe changes in abundance and expansion into sagebrush ( …

Tuesday Afternoons With Schlegel, Barry Cushman Jan 2021

Tuesday Afternoons With Schlegel, Barry Cushman

Journal Articles

I confess that I’m not at all certain why I was invited to this distinguished gathering. I suppose that it’s because Schlegel and I are friends; but that just pushes the mystery back a remove. Because as Jack surely recognizes, it is not at all obvious that (or why) we should be friends. We are from different generations—Schlegel is my senior by nearly twenty years. I don’t imagine that anyone would suggest that our personal styles bear a strong resemblance to one another. And our approaches to scholarship are almost antagonistic. Jack’s message accompanying the invitation to this conference strongly …

Anem: A Simple Web-Based Platform To Build Stakeholder Understanding Of Groundwater Behavior, Bruce Huber Jan 2021

Anem: A Simple Web-Based Platform To Build Stakeholder Understanding Of Groundwater Behavior, Bruce Huber

Journal Articles

Groundwater supports essential societal and ecological functions by acting as a reservoir that buffers against natural variability. Increasing water scarcity and climate variability have resulted in more intensive management of groundwater resources, but groundwater often remains difficult to understand and manage. With this in mind, we develop a simple platform that provides a straightforward, web-based user interface applicable to a wide variety of end-user scenarios. Groundwater behavior is modeled using the method of images in a new R package, anem, which serves as the engine for the web platform, anem-app, produced using R Shiny. Both tools allow users to define …

Variations In Anterior Segment Vasculature Of The Eye And Their Implication In Strabismus Surgery And Other Surgical Procedures, Adam L. Lewis, Clayton Marolt, M. Scott Draper, Victoria Gordon, Kenneth S. Johnson, Joanna Rowe, Kanwalgeet Hans, Steven M. Silverstein, Anthony Olinger

Faculty and Staff Publications

Objective:

Anterior segment ischemia (ASI) is a serious complication of strabismus surgery and other ocular procedures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate variation of the long posterior artery (LPCA). These variations may predispose patients to anterior segment ischemia following strabismus surgery, and proper mapping may provide surgical “danger zones” for other invasive ocular procedures.

Subjects:

A total of 100 preserved cadaveric eyeballs from University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), Creighton University, and Kansas City University (KCU) were utilized for this study.

Methods:

LPCAs were identified, isolated, and counted prior to removal of the choroid. Two distances were measured …

The Influence Of Religious Belief On Burnout In Medical Students, Megan Haghnegahdar, Palash Sharma, Kevin P. Hubbard, W. Abraham White

Faculty and Staff Publications

Objective: Approximately half of all U.S. medical students are experiencing burnout. A previous study has demonstrated that higher levels of spirituality are associated with less burnout in medical students, yet no studies have examined the relationship between religious affiliation and burnout in medical students. The purpose of this study is to determine if specific religious affiliation and level of religious involvement is associated with less burnout in medical students.

Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was sent to all students attending five different osteopathic and allopathic medical schools in Kansas and Missouri. It contained a validated burnout measure, an item to …

Leverage, Randy J. Kozel Jan 2021

Leverage, Randy J. Kozel

Journal Articles

Sometimes government operates by inducement rather than order. Congress distributes money to the states. A state grants funds to nonprofit organizations. An administrative agency offers wages and professional opportunities to its staff. A high school provides instruction to its students. In each situation, the government furnishes something of value. And in each situation, it asks something in return-whether implementation of a government program, forbearance from activities deemed inconsistent with operational goals, conduct in pursuit of an employment mission, or compliance with standards of academic discipline. Though they arise in different contexts, these varied forms of government action present the same …

Twenty-Third Amendment Problems Confronting District Of Columbia Statehood, Derek T. Muller Jan 2021

Twenty-Third Amendment Problems Confronting District Of Columbia Statehood, Derek T. Muller

Journal Articles

Proposals to make the District of Columbia a state would leave behind a new, substantially smaller District named "Capital." The Twenty-Third Amendment guarantees that the new District would have three electoral votes, no matter how few people reside in it. Proposals that would make the District of Columbia state do not adequately address this issue. Statehood, if it proceeds, should be conditioned on repeal of the Twenty-Third Amendment. Potential alternative statutory solutions to the Twenty-Third Amendment--which do not exist in recent bills that Congress has considered--present constitutional, legal, and practical problems.

In one sense, the scope of this Article is …

Weaponizing The Ballot, Derek T. Muller Jan 2021

Weaponizing The Ballot, Derek T. Muller

Journal Articles

State legislatures are considering passing laws to prevent presidential candidates from appearing on the ballot if they fail to disclose their tax returns. These proposals exceed the states' power under the Elections Clause and the Presidential Electors Clause. States have no power to add qualifications to presidential or congressional candidates. But states do have constitutional authority to regulate the manner of holding elections and to direct the manner of appointing presidential electors. "Manner" regulations that relate to the ballot are those that affect the integrity and reliability of the electoral process itself or that require a preliminary showing of substantial …

Reducing Election Litigation, Derek T. Muller Jan 2021

Reducing Election Litigation, Derek T. Muller

Journal Articles

Election litigation has exploded, and judges have increasingly been asked to evaluate ever-finer points of election administration. This Article posits some reasons that the judiciary has done so, and it offers potential ways to reduce election litigation.

Part I examines the increase in litigation and attributes at least some of that increase to several causes: increased campaign expenditures on litigation; increased partisanship in state legislatures yielded more contentious election laws; the decline of preclearance under the Voting Rights Act after Shelby County v. Holder; and Supreme Court extensions of the Anderson v. Celebrezze framework to broad areas of election …

Development And Validation Of A Psychometric Scale To Assess Attitude Towards Safe Abortions In Pakistan, Xaher Gul, Junaid-Ur-Rehman Siddiqui, Miraal Mavalvala, Waqas Hameed, Muhammad Ishaque

Community Health Sciences

Despite severe health and economic consequences that women face because of the negative attitude of healthcare providers towards safe abortion and post-abortion care (SA/PAC), no psychometric tool has yet been validated for assessing the attitude towards SA/PAC. Only a handful of studies have attempted to assess healthcare providers' attitude towards safe abortions in Pakistan. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate a psychometric scale to assess attitude towards safe abortions in Pakistan. The study collected data from 106 workers of an NGO that provides SA/PAC through an online and anonymous survey using the organisation's network. The study used factor …

Using Machine Learning On Diverse Datasets To Predict Drug-Induced Liver Injury, Temidayo Adeluwa Jan 2021

Using Machine Learning On Diverse Datasets To Predict Drug-Induced Liver Injury, Temidayo Adeluwa

Theses and Dissertations

A major challenge in drug development is safety and toxicity concerns due to drug sideeffects. One such side effect, drug-induced liver injury (DILI), is considered a primary factor in regulatory clearance. To develop prediction models of DILI, the Critical Assessment of Massive Data Analysis (CAMDA) 2020 CMap Drug Safety Challenge goal was established with an ultimate goal to develop prediction models based on gene perturbation of six preselected cell-lines (CMap L1000), extended structural information (MOLD2), toxicity data (TOX21), and FDA reporting of adverse events (FAERS). Four types of DILI classes were targeted, including two clinically relevant scores and two control …

Methods For Weighting Decisions To Assist Modelers And Decision Analysts: A Review Of Ratio Assignment And Approximate Techniques, Barry Ezell, Christopher J. Lynch, Patrick T. Hester

VMASC Publications

Computational models and simulations often involve representations of decision-making processes. Numerous methods exist for representing decision-making at varied resolution levels based on the objectives of the simulation and the desired level of fidelity for validation. Decision making relies on the type of decision and the criteria that is appropriate for making the decision; therefore, decision makers can reach unique decisions that meet their own needs given the same information. Accounting for personalized weighting scales can help to reflect a more realistic state for a modeled system. To this end, this article reviews and summarizes eight multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques …

Complex system governance (CSG) is an emerging field encompassing a framework for system performance improvement through the purposeful design, execution, and evolution of essential metasystem functions. The goal of this study was to understand how the domain of asset management (AsM) can leverage the capabilities of CSG. AsM emerged from engineering as a structured approach to organizing complex organizations to realize the value of assets while balancing performance, risks, costs, and other opportunities. However, there remains a scarcity of literature discussing the potential relationship between AsM and CSG. To initiate the closure of this gap, this research reviews the basics …

Enhancing Preservice Teachers' Intention To Integrate Engineering Through A Multi-Disciplinary Partnership (Evaluation), Francisco Cima, Pilar Pazos, Jennifer Jill Kidd, Kristie S. Gutierrez, Stacie I. Ringleb, Orlando M. Ayala, Krishnanand Kaipa

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Driven by the need to broaden participation and increase recruitment in STEM fields, considerable efforts are underway to promote the infusion of engineering into elementary and secondary grade levels. The benefits of engineering education and the strong support from professional and educational groups are well documented, yet the actual integration of engineering content in the K-12 setting remains a challenge. Pre-college educator programs that train future teachers are a natural target for the integration efforts. Although elementary educators recognize the importance of integrating engineering in their classrooms, they often lack the confidence to teach engineering content. The absence of effective …

Interactive Agent-Based Simulation For Experimentation: A Case Study With Cooperatve Game Theory, Andrew J. Collins, Sheida Etemadidavan

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Incorporating human behavior is a current challenge for agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS). Human behavior includes many different aspects depending on the scenario considered. The scenario context of this paper is strategic coalition formation, which is traditionally modeled using cooperative game theory, but we use ABMS instead; as such, it needs to be validated. One approach to validation is to compare the recorded behavior of humans to what was observed in our simulation. We suggest that using an interactive simulation is a good approach to collecting the necessary human behavior data because the humans would be playing in precisely the …

Prioritizing Countries By Concern Regarding Access To Weapons Of Mass Destruction Materials, Susan Caskey, Barry Ezell

VMASC Publications

This article presents a global prioritization methodology that evaluates the relative risks of non-state actor acquisition of materials that could be used in chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high explosive Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) from the country's relevant infrastructure. Prioritization is based on three domains: 1. Assessing relative scale of materials in each country, 2. The country's corresponding security posture, and 3. The presence of threat actors. The output is a list of countries prioritized from greatest risk to least. Rather than providing an overall 1 to N ranking, however, the results are placed into tiers based upon their …

Pricing Drugs Fairly, Govind Persad

Publications

Dissatisfaction with drug prices has prompted a flurry of recent legislation and academic research. But while pharmaceutical policy often regards fair pricing as a goal, the concept of fairness itself frequently goes undefined. Legal scholarship—even work ostensibly focused on fairness—has not defined and defended an account of fair pricing. Recent legislative proposals passed by the House and proposed by Sens. Ron Wyden and Chuck Grassley have similarly avoided a determinate position on fairness. This Article explains and defends an account of what makes a price for a drug fair that identifies fair price with social value, argues for implementing fair …

The Destabilizing Effect Of Terrorism In The International Human Rights Regime, Wadie E. Said Jan 2021

The Destabilizing Effect Of Terrorism In The International Human Rights Regime, Wadie E. Said

Publications

This Article explores the counterterrorism apparatus maintained by the United Nations from a critical perspective. It argues that the international counterterrorism regime reflects American and European priorities and structures to a significant degree, a situation that positions the threat of Islamist terrorism as preeminent. The existence of this regime results in significant distortion to concepts and laws governing citizenship, national security, and civil liberties, not to mention overstating the threat of terrorism itself. Further, there is a clear racial component in linking the terrorist threat to Islam itself, the majority religion in many countries of the Global South, specifically those …

Measuring State Capture, Pamela J. Clouser Mccann, Douglas M. Spencer, Abby K. Wood

Publications

How do we know when an executive branch actor is captured or is at risk of capture? And what is the risk that other branches of government could be captured? In this project, we offer a critical review of regulatory -- or industry-related -- capture that we use to build a concept of state capture that extends beyond agency-specific accounts and incorporates both the structures and processes of governing, while centering our examination on the public. We use state-level data on campaign finance, lobbying, industry size, ethics, and transparency to measure the degree to which the fifty state executive, legislative, …

Allocating Medicine Fairly In An Unfair Pandemic, Govind Persad

Publications

America’s COVID-19 pandemic has both devastated and disparately harmed minority communities. How can the allocation of scarce treatments for COVID-19 and similar public health threats fairly and legally respond to these racial disparities? Some have proposed that members of racial groups who have been especially hard-hit by the pandemic should receive priority for scarce treatments. Others have worried that this prioritization misidentifies racial disparities as reflecting biological differences rather than structural racism, or that it will generate mistrust among groups who have previously been harmed by medical research. Still others complain that such prioritization would be fundamentally unjust. I argue …
