“Sometimes Education Will Help You Lead The Life That You Really Want To Lead”: Factors Influencing Undergraduate Women’S Motivation To Pursue A Bachelor’S Degree, Debra Lynne Radi Jan 2021

“Sometimes Education Will Help You Lead The Life That You Really Want To Lead”: Factors Influencing Undergraduate Women’S Motivation To Pursue A Bachelor’S Degree, Debra Lynne Radi

Theses and Dissertations

As a collective, women’s experience in higher education has been disparate and differential to some men’s experience over the last two centuries, fundamentally based on the societal influences of the time. In the formative years of higher education women attended higher education institutions for social stratification reasons or for marital choice opportunities and to a lesser degree for college outcomes. This study’s purpose was to explore the current motivations of freshmen individuals who identified as female undergraduate students in their first year of pursuing a bachelor’s degree in higher education. This study used a qualitative research design with semi-structured interviews …

Seismic Response Of Liquid-Filled Thin-Walled Steel Cylindrical Tanks, Wiriyachai Roopkumdee Jan 2021

Seismic Response Of Liquid-Filled Thin-Walled Steel Cylindrical Tanks, Wiriyachai Roopkumdee

Theses and Dissertations

Seismic response plays an important role in the design of liquid-filled thin-walled steel cylindrical tanks because of the small thicknesses of the walls as compared to their diameter. The liquid-filled thin-walled cylindrical tanks are vulnerable when they are subjected to earthquake accelerations. This dissertation aims to estimate and improve the seismic buckling strength of the liquid-filled thin-walled steel cylindrical tanks under earthquake excitation. The structural response to the base excitation is modeled using the concept of effective earthquake forces. The time steps in numerical analysis are divided to be small enough to accurately capture the periods of oscillations. The finite …

The purpose of the research work was to develop image processing algorithms for automatic and objective assessment of psoriasis to aid in more effective management and treatment of patient symptoms. For this purpose, multiple classical machine learning-based unsupervised approaches are proposed which achieve a maximum average accuracy of ~94% on a dataset of 45 images of various resolutions. This accuracy improves performance by 14% in comparison to existing approaches reported in the literature on the same dataset of images. An alternative deep learning neural network-based approach was proposed that achieves an average accuracy of ~87% for the same set of …

Pathological Role Of Interferon (Ifn)-Gamma During Influenza Pathogenesis, Taylor Marie Schmit Jan 2021

Pathological Role Of Interferon (Ifn)-Gamma During Influenza Pathogenesis, Taylor Marie Schmit

Theses and Dissertations

Influenza virus continues to cause severe disease globally, especially in elderly and immunocompromised populations. While at-risk populations are encouraged to get the yearly influenza vaccine, high mutation rates of the virus result in seasons of diminished vaccine efficacy. While there is an apparent need to devise an influenza vaccine to fight antigenic drift, research has also currently been pushing toward investigating the pathological response to influenza disease. More specifically, how the dysregulation in the host immune response contributes to influenza disease pathology in the lungs. The importance of dissecting the mechanism at which influenza-mediated tissue pathology occurs is an important …

Mapping Of Debris Covered Ice Masses; Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica, Miranda Noel Shanks Jan 2021

Mapping Of Debris Covered Ice Masses; Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica, Miranda Noel Shanks

Theses and Dissertations

Global climate change threatens glacial ice, which contains vital information on paleoclimate, paleo-atmosphere, and ancient organisms due to rising temperatures and CO2 levels (IPCC, 2014). Throughout the Transantarctic Mountain Range, a minimal number of buried ice masses have been previously discovered which have the potential to contain ice that exceed the ages of most glaciers on Earth. These ice masses are buried under < 1 meter of till, which thermally shields them and limits sublimation, thus preserving the ice. An example of such buried ice mass is found in Ong Valley, Antarctica where a sublimation till completely covers the ice and is dated at > 1.1 Ma years old, consequently making it one of the oldest known ice masses on Earth. In addition to two published locations, no systematic effort has been made to map such ice masses in Antarctica. This research is …

Likewise, teachers need support in creating and applying effective policies and strategies to manage these devices in the classroom. …

Military Combat Veterans, Sentencing Reform, And Problem-Solving Courts, Andrea Sivanich Jan 2021

Military Combat Veterans, Sentencing Reform, And Problem-Solving Courts, Andrea Sivanich

Theses and Dissertations

Military veterans involved with the criminal justice system may have unique behavioral health and physical needs, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or traumatic brain injury (TBI), and could benefit from sentence mitigation that emphasizes rehabilitation. This research is related to sentencing reform and how it may support problem-solving court sentencing, as a subset of community-based treatment options within the criminal justice system. This research is important in that it attempts to determine whether the law distinguishes veteran offenders, as a specific population, from other offenders with treatment needs. To do that, this dissertation examines the role of legal texts in …

Accurate Threshold Estimation For Electronic Control Unit (Ecu) Signatures In Vehicular Environments, Niroop Sugunaraj Jan 2021

Accurate Threshold Estimation For Electronic Control Unit (Ecu) Signatures In Vehicular Environments, Niroop Sugunaraj

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid digitization of modern vehicles using electronic control units (ECUs) has made the modern automobile to realize autonomous operations. ECUs within a vehicle are capable of handling multiple functions within the vehicle pertaining to vehicular control, infotainment system, or electronic control of mirrors, wipers, and seats. Such data are relayed through various communication buses within a vehicle that allows for wired communication between multiple ECUs when referring to in-vehicle communication or wireless communication between a vehicle's ECUs and other vehicles and/or roadside infrastructure. Though network traffic can be intercepted from these communication buses, identifying an ECU responsible for a particular …

Assessment Of Goes-16 Satellite And High-Resolution Rapid Refresh Model Data For Blowing Snow Impact-Based Decision Support Services, Elizabeth Sims

Theses and Dissertations

Regions of the globe, including the Northern Great Plains, are subject to adverse conditions during the wintertime. Among these conditions is blowing snow, which can cause significant societal and economic impacts by reducing visibility. The lack of this process in numerical weather prediction models creates a forecasting challenge for the region. In recent years, however, forecasters have gained access to a variety of National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) modeling and satellite tools such as the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) that may improve Impact-Based Decision Support Services (IDSS) goals for blowing snow. This project …

Methods: A secondary analysis of data from the 2011–12 and 2013–14 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was performed on U.S. adults aged 20 years and older. HGS was measured using handheld dynamometry. MetS was measured as the presence of three or more cardiometabolic risk factors according to the American Heart Association criteria. Crude and fully adjusted receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to identify gender- and age group-specific cut-points for HGS associated …

Characteristics Of School Success As Identified By School Leaders, Dave Wheeler Jan 2021

Characteristics Of School Success As Identified By School Leaders, Dave Wheeler

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how school leaders in the state of North Dakota define success in their schools or districts without using test scores as a measurement. The information shared by these school leaders will be shared with other school leaders in North Dakota with the intent that test data becomes less of a driving force in schools and student engagement, while positive climate and culture become more emphasized for school and district leadership.

This study’s purpose was to diminish the emphasis on state assessment as a singular resource that defines success in schools. Communities, staff …

The Architecture Of The Un Refugee Convention And Protocol, James C. Hathaway Jan 2021

The Architecture Of The Un Refugee Convention And Protocol, James C. Hathaway

Book Chapters

The heart of international refugee law is the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees, with some three-quarters of the world’s governments having bound themselves to respect the standards set by these treaties. Contracting States may—and often have—accepted additional refugee protection responsibilities under national or regional law. But, as a matter of international law, these additional duties complement rather than supplant the fundamental commitments made under the Refugee Convention and Protocol.

The architecture of this core normative standard is in many ways unusual. As a formal matter, it derives …

Principles For Policymakers, James R. Hines Jr. Jan 2021

Principles For Policymakers, James R. Hines Jr.

Book Chapters

Multinational corporations are global goliaths, but they have not conquered the world, nor are they responsible for every economic ill, as is sometimes alleged. These firms contribute to global prosperity by improving productivity and efficiency, innovating, and creating jobs-mostly good jobs-in both home and host countries. Governments lavish attention on multinational corporations, seeking the good that accompanies their investments even as policymakers worry about the influence multinational firms have on the local environment, social conditions, and politics. In this regard, governments face the tradeoffs that commonly afflict economic policymaking. Efforts to control the actions of multinational firms typically come at …

Characterizing Galectin And Lysosomal Rupture's Role In Spreading Parkinson Disease Pathology, Kevin Burbidge Jan 2021

Characterizing Galectin And Lysosomal Rupture's Role In Spreading Parkinson Disease Pathology, Kevin Burbidge

Dissertations

The misfolding and subsequent accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) is central to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Several lines of evidence suggest pathological α-syn spread cell-to-cell via a "prion-like" mechanism. Furthermore, this pathological α-syn is capable of "seeding" further misfolding of non-pathological α-syn, converting them to the pathological form. While a vast body of both genetic and experimental evidence indicates that α-syn is critical to PD development, how α-syn induces progressive neuronal dysfunction and cell death remains unclear.Autophagy, conventional for macroautophagy, is the primary degradation pathway for α-syn aggregates. Autophagy also influences the unconventional secretion of both pathological and non-pathological …

Characterizing A Novel Cocksackievirus B3 Protease Mutant And Its Response To Polyamine Depletion, Bridget Hulsebosch Jan 2021

Characterizing A Novel Cocksackievirus B3 Protease Mutant And Its Response To Polyamine Depletion, Bridget Hulsebosch

Master's Theses

Enteroviruses, including Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3), are pervasive pathogens that cause significant disease, including cardiomyopathies. Unfortunately, no treatments or vaccines are available for infected individuals. We identified the host polyamine pathway as a potential drug target, as inhibiting polyamine biosynthesis significantly reduces enterovirus replication in vitro and in vivo. Here, we show that CVB3 is sensitive to polyamine depletion through the polyamine analog diethylnorspermidine (DENSpm) which enhances polyamine catabolism through induction of polyamine acetylation. We demonstrate that CVB3 acquires resistance to DENSpm via mutation of the 2A protease, which enhances proteolytic activity in the presence of DENSpm. Resistance to DENSpm occurred …

Civil Rights, Access To Counsel, And Injunctive Class Actions In The United States, Maureen Carroll Jan 2021

Civil Rights, Access To Counsel, And Injunctive Class Actions In The United States, Maureen Carroll

Book Chapters

According to a familiar story about class actions in the United States, aggregation promotes access to counsel by increasing the amount of money from which counsel fees can be taken. Courts usually award class counsel a percentage of the monetary recovery obtained on behalf of the class, and class treatment can turn a $30 case into a $3 million case. But what about class actions that do not involve monetary relief at all? Some civil rights plaintiffs seek to stop a violation, rather than to obtain compensation for past harm, and therefore choose to pursue only an injunction or declaratory …

Christianity And Antitrust, Kenneth G. Elzinga, Daniel Crane Jan 2021

Christianity And Antitrust, Kenneth G. Elzinga, Daniel Crane

Book Chapters

The purpose of this chapter is to consider whether the Christian faith has a nexus with the institution of antitrust. It turns out it doesn’t – and it does. For example, Christianity cannot explain why the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index is superior to the four-firm concentration ratio as a measure of industry concentration. Economics can. On the other hand, economics cannot explain why the per se rule against price-fixing is morally appropriate. The Bible can.

Offenders And Sorn Laws, Amanda Agan, J.J. Prescott Jan 2021

Offenders And Sorn Laws, Amanda Agan, J.J. Prescott

Book Chapters

Chapter 7 describes what we know about the effects of SORN laws on criminal behavior. A coherent story emerges from this review: there is virtually no evidence that SORN laws reduce recidivism or otherwise increase public safety. The chapter first delineates the various ways registration and notification alter the legal environment not only for registrants but also for nonregistrants, the public, and law enforcement. There are many channels through which SORN laws might impact the frequency of sex offenses, including some that would produce an increase in overall offending. The chapter assesses these possibilities in light of a large body …

A New Approach To Executory Contracts, John A.E. Pottow Jan 2021

A New Approach To Executory Contracts, John A.E. Pottow

Book Chapters

Few topics have bedeviled the bankruptcy community as much as the proper treatment of executory contracts under section 365 of the Bankruptcy Code. The case law is "hopelessly convoluted" and a "bramble-filled thicket." While many have struggled in the bootless task of providing coherence to the unwieldy corpus of case law and commentary, all would agree Jay Westbrook has been at the modern vanguard of this Sisyphean task. (1 assign Westbrook to the "modern" forefront, thereby relegating Vern Countryman, whose legacy in this domain rightly persists, to the annals of history, choosing as my perhaps arbitrary dividing line the adoption …
