Numerical Behavior Of Steel H-Plies Repaired Using Layered Concrete Jacket, Fareh Waleed Abudawaba Jan 2021

Numerical Behavior Of Steel H-Plies Repaired Using Layered Concrete Jacket, Fareh Waleed Abudawaba

Masters Theses

“This study developed finite element models (FEMs), using LS-Dyna software, to investigate the repair of corroded steel H-piles using concrete jacket. The concrete modeled as a layered material simulating 3D printed concrete. 3DPC is a new technology that can be used to repair or build structures without formwork by depositing concrete mixture layer by layer. For the 3DPC, this study investigated the feasibility of using alkali-activated concrete (AAC) synthesized using class C fly ash as the main binder. The fresh properties, extrudability, and buildability of the proposed concrete were investigated through open time and deformation tests, respectively. Hardened properties were …

Neural Network Supervised And Reinforcement Learning For Neurological, Diagnostic, And Modeling Problems, Donald Wunsch Iii Jan 2021

Neural Network Supervised And Reinforcement Learning For Neurological, Diagnostic, And Modeling Problems, Donald Wunsch Iii

Masters Theses

“As the medical world becomes increasingly intertwined with the tech sphere, machine learning on medical datasets and mathematical models becomes an attractive application. This research looks at the predictive capabilities of neural networks and other machine learning algorithms, and assesses the validity of several feature selection strategies to reduce the negative effects of high dataset dimensionality. Our results indicate that several feature selection methods can maintain high validation and test accuracy on classification tasks, with neural networks performing best, for both single class and multi-class classification applications. This research also evaluates a proof-of-concept application of a deep-Q-learning network (DQN) to …

A Systematic Analysis Of Eye-Tracking Metrics For Sleepiness, Debasis Roy Jan 2021

A Systematic Analysis Of Eye-Tracking Metrics For Sleepiness, Debasis Roy

Masters Theses

”Sleepiness or sleep deprivation is a serious hazard that can be life-threatening in carrying out certain tasks (e.g., when driving or executing attention-critical tasks). Eye movement can provide cues on sleepiness. Hence, eye-tracking metrics have the potential to detect sleepiness.

In this research, we used a systematic analysis approach to identify eye-tracking metrics for sleepiness. We used several databases to identify independent experimental studies that have used eye-tracking metrics to assess sleepiness. We identified 25 studies that included 674 participants where the participants’ data were captured both in an alert state and in a sleep-deprived state. In the analysis, we …

A Meta-Analysis: Gamification In Education, Yalin Wang Jan 2021

A Meta-Analysis: Gamification In Education, Yalin Wang

Masters Theses

“Gamification has been used in a variety of contexts including education. In order to understand the effects of gamification in education, a meta-analysis was conducted. A bottom-up approach was used to analyze the effects of game design elements on learning outcomes found in the literature search. The result suggests that gamification can enhance student learning outcomes. Elements such as points, leaderboards, competitions, progress bars, feedback, and collaboration have medium to large effect sizes. Gamification also has larger effects on young children in elementary education than learners at other education levels. The study offers suggestions and guidelines for educators on the …

A Combined Experimental And Computational Study Of Mechanical Properties After Balloon Kyphoplasty, Philip Purcell, Fiona Mcevoy, Stephen Tiernan, Derek Sweeney, Seamus Morris Jan 2021

A Combined Experimental And Computational Study Of Mechanical Properties After Balloon Kyphoplasty, Philip Purcell, Fiona Mcevoy, Stephen Tiernan, Derek Sweeney, Seamus Morris

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Vertebral compression fractures rank among the most frequent injuries to the musculoskeletal system, with more than 1 million fractures per annum worldwide. The past decade has seen a considerable increase in the utilisation of surgical procedures such as balloon kyphoplasty to treat these injuries. While many kyphoplasty studies have examined the risk of damage to adjacent vertebra after treatment, recent case reports have also emerged to indicate the potential for the treated vertebra itself to re-collapse after surgery. The following study presents a combined experimental and computational study of balloon kyphoplasty which aims to establish a methodology capable of evaluating …

Evaluating The Anticancer Properties And Real-Time Electrochemical Extracellular Bio-Speciation Of Bis (1,10-Phenanthroline) Silver (I) Acetate Monohydrate In The Presence Of A549 Lung Cancer Cells, Prabhakar Sidambaram, John Colleran Jan 2021

Evaluating The Anticancer Properties And Real-Time Electrochemical Extracellular Bio-Speciation Of Bis (1,10-Phenanthroline) Silver (I) Acetate Monohydrate In The Presence Of A549 Lung Cancer Cells, Prabhakar Sidambaram, John Colleran

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

According to the American Cancer Society report (2019–2021), the majority (63%) of stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients are prescribed with chemo and/or radiation therapies, with 5-year relative survival rates of just 19%. Thus, directed drug development, toward personalised cancer treatment, is widely recognised as a necessary strategy in drug discovery research. However, broad generalisations on the modes of action of bioinorganic compounds are not conducive to tailored drug design, hence, fundamental mechanistic research is essential in realising personalised healthcare. In this work, anticancer properties of bis (1,10-phenanthroline) silver (I) acetate monohydrate (Ag-Phen), toward A549 lung cancer cells …

Escape Velocity Walks The City: Kindness And Intimacy In Public Space In The Transgender And Gender Diverse Teen Experience, Renée Newman Jan 2021

Escape Velocity Walks The City: Kindness And Intimacy In Public Space In The Transgender And Gender Diverse Teen Experience, Renée Newman

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Escape Velocity Walks the City took place 23rd-26th October 2019 as part of the Future Echoes Festival in Melbourne, Australia. Created by Rosana Cade with Ivor MacAskill, Laurie Brown and St Martins Youth Theatre, audience and performer walk and talk together through the inner city of Melbourne. Walking and sitting, hand in hand with transgender and gender non-conforming teens, the performance was often silent, uneasy and yet, kind. Simultaneously fragile and powerful the work provoked a gentle expectation to open our hearts and minds. From the surreal zone of isolation (mid COVID-19 pandemic) this paper is a memory of a …

Repair Of Vesicouterine Fistula By Not Using Traditional O' Connor Method, Lubna Razzak, Raheela Mohsin Rizvi Jan 2021

Repair Of Vesicouterine Fistula By Not Using Traditional O' Connor Method, Lubna Razzak, Raheela Mohsin Rizvi

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

A 25-year-old female patient visited our clinic with complaint of cyclic haematuria. She had previous two Caesarean Sections at a secondary care hospital. Her complete urinalysis showed abundant red blood cells. Through computed tomography a fistula tract between the posterior wall of the bladder and the anterior wall of the lower uterine segment was diagnosed. The Cystoscopy revealed a fistulous opening with a diameter of nearly 1.5 cm localized between the bladder and uterine cavity. Fistulae was repaired by abdominal approach without transection of bladder. Surgery was performed by mobilization of bladder and wide anterior uterine dissection. A 2cm defect …
