In Silico And In Vitro Tudies For Identification Of Novel Egfr Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors, Duangjai Todsaporn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) has been identified as a promising target in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Mutations, including L858R/T790M double and L858R/T790M/C797S triple mutations, in the TK domain of EGFR have been linked to the severity of several cancers, especially NSCLC. A combination of comprehensive molecular modeling and in vitro kinase inhibition assay was used to unravel the mutational effects of EGFR on the susceptibility of five commercial drugs (erlotinib, gefitinib, afatinib, dacomitinib, and osimertinib) from each generation of EGFR in comparison with the wild-type EGFR. The binding affinity of five-FDA-approved drugs towards the L858R/T790M …

Receiver Function Imaging Of The 410 And 660 Km Discontinuities And Seismic Azimuthal Anisotropy Revealed By Shear Wave Splitting Beneath The Australian Continent, Kailun Ba
Doctoral Dissertations
"The Australian continent is composed the of Precambrian cratons in the west and Phanerozolc orogens in the east. Despite numerous seismological studies, controversies remain regarding the structure, evolution, and dynamics of the crust and mantle beneath Australia. In this study, we used two techniques, receiver functions and shear wave splitting analyses, to investigate the topography of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) discontinuities and mantle seismic azimuthal anisotropy, respectively. We utilized P-to-S receiver functions to map the 410 and 660 km discontinuities bordering the MTZ. The discontinuity depths obtained show a systematic apparent uplifting for both discontinuities in central and western …

When we incorporate diversity and inclusion into Library and Information Science course design and content and build communication and learning frameworks in the classroom on inclusive principles, we build a cohort of students who cannot “unsee” these basic principles as they engage in practice. By designing lecture and activity materials that allow students to read and engage with different perspectives about professional values and content, we create opportunities for awareness building and prepare students to engage with the same practices as they join the profession. This chapter provides insights for and examples of how to create courses that bring diversity, …

Privacy needs and stigma pose significant barriers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people sharing information related to their identities in traditional settings and research methods such as surveys and interviews. Fortunately, social media facilitates people’s belonging to and exchanging information within online LGBT communities. Compared to heterosexual respondents, LGBT users are also more likely to have accounts on social media websites and access social media daily. However, the current relevant LGBT studies on social media are not efficient or assume that any accounts that utilize LGBT-related words in their profile belong to individuals who identify as LGBT. Our …

Sexual harassment has been the topic of thousands of research articles in the 20th and 21st centuries. Several review papers have been developed to synthesize the literature about sexual harassment. While traditional literature review studies provide valuable insights, these studies have some limitations including analyzing a limited number of papers, being time-consuming and labor-intensive, focusing on a few topics, and lacking temporal trend analysis. To address these limitations, this paper employs both computational and qualitative approaches to identify major research topics, explore temporal trends of sexual harassment topics over the past few decades, and point to future possible directions in …

The understanding of the public response to COVID-19 vaccines is the key success factor to control the COVID-19 pandemic. To understand the public response, there is a need to explore public opinion. Traditional surveys are expensive and time-consuming, address limited health topics, and obtain small-scale data. Twitter can provide a great opportunity to understand public opinion regarding COVID-19 vaccines. The current study proposes an approach using computational and human coding methods to collect and analyze a large number of tweets to provide a wider perspective on the COVID-19 vaccine. This study identifies the sentiment of tweets using a machine learning …

Planning And Evaluating Policy To Address Information Inequalities: An Information Worlds Matrix Approach, Kim M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
One objective of public policy is to solve social problems and often it is through policy that digital inclusion efforts enter our information society. Digital technologies can help accelerate progress in fighting poverty, hunger and ill-health, in improving educational outcomes and in reducing gender and other inequalities. Digital inclusion is a means to empower underserved and marginalized populations. Policy related to digital inclusion often starts with building infrastructure and providing affordable access to information and communication technologies such as through phone connections, broadband, computers in classrooms or a computer (i.e., smartphone) in every pocket. But how can we know whether …

In an IoT environment deployed on top of fog and/or cloud nodes, offloading data between nodes is a common practice that aims at lessening the burden on these nodes and hence, meeting some real-time processing requirements. Existing initiatives put emphasis on “when to offload” and “where to offload” using criteria like resource constraint, load balancing, and data safety during transfer. However, there is limited emphasis on the trustworthiness of those nodes that will accept the offloaded data putting these data at risk of misuse. To address this limited emphasis, this paper advocates for trust as a decision criterion for identifying …

Current cancer prevention recommendations advise limiting red meat intake to <500g/week and avoiding consumption of processed meat, but do not differentiate the source of processed meat. We examined the associations of processed meat derived from red vs. non-red meats with cancer risk in a prospective cohort of 26,218 adults who reported dietary intake using the Canadian Diet History Questionnaire. Incidence of cancer was obtained through data linkage with Alberta Cancer Registry with median (IQR) follow-up of 13.3 (5.1) years. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were adjusted for covariates and stratified by age and gender. The median (IQR) consumption (g/week) of red meat, processed meat from red meat and processed meat from non-red meat were 267.9 (269.9), 53.6 (83.3), and 11.9 (31.8), respectively. High intakes (4th Quartile) of processed meat from red meat was associated with increased risk of gastro-intestinal cancer Adjusted Hazard Ratio (AHR) (95% CI): 1.68 (1.09-2.57) and colorectal cancers AHR (95% CI): 1.90 (1.12-3.22), respectively in women. No statistically significant associations were observed for intakes of red meat or processed meat from non-red meat. Results suggests that the carcinogenic effect associated with processed meat intake may be limited to processed meat derived from red meats. The findings provide preliminary evidence toward refining cancer prevention recommendations for red and processed meat intake.

We study the non-linear causal relation between uncertainty-due-to-infectious-diseases and stock–bond correlation. To this end, we use high-frequency 1-min data to compute daily realized measures of correlation and jumps, and then, we employ a nonlinear Granger causality test with the use of artificial neural networks so as to investigate the predictability of this type of uncertainty on realized stock–bond correlation and jumps. Our findings reveal that uncertainty-due-to-infectious-diseases has significant predictive value on the changes of the stock–bond relation.

The study consisted of two parts: (1) the acute effects of EMR from MP on electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure (BP), heart rate variability (HRV), and body’s surface temperature; and (2) the chronic effects of EMR from MP on ECG, echocardiography, BP, cardiac biomarkers (i.e., cardiac troponin I–cTnI), HRV, and body’s surface temperature in healthy conscious …
Effect Of Occupational Welding Fume Exposure On Hemostatic & Inflammatory Blood Parameters And Cardiovascular Risks On Welders And Non-Welders In Confined Space: A Longitudinal Study, Ning Li
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Occupational welding fumes contains varies of toxic metal particles and may affect cardiovascular system like the Particulate Matters (PM). The hypothetical mechanisms of welding fume toxicity center on oxidative stress and inflammatory, similar as the mechanisms that link PM2.5 and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The popular mechanisms on toxicity of welding fumes agreed that PM was associated with increased WBC and neutrophil counts, and increased WBC counts lead to higher Cardiovascular risks and Coronary heart disease risks.Urine Mn and Cr level in the welder group was significantly higher than the non-welder group (Mn: 0.96 VS 0.22 ug/g creatinine, p < 0.001; Cr: 0.63 VS 0.22 ug/g creatinine, p < 0.01). One third of the non-welders were in the high metal-exposed group. When all the participants were divided by occupation type, two times measurements revealed that Hct, WBC and Eosinophil indices of the welder groups were significantly higher (all p < 0.05). Linear regression models showed that, comparing to non-welders, welding could cause alterations to most hemostatic indices majorly by effecting an increase: Hct (β = 0.015, p = 0.007), WBC (β = 0.047, p = 0.033), Eosinophil ratio % (β = 0.345, p = 0.001). When all the participants were divided by metal level groups, there was bidirectional relationship between urine Mn level and WBC count in the linear regression models ((β = - 0.049, p = 0.045 and β = 0.059, p = 0.007, separately for starting and ending point). The study participants (both welders and non-welders) had an average systolic BP in the “high normal” range (Welders: 125.21 ± 11.23 mmHg for systolic BP Non-welders: mean = 126.33 ± 11.41 mmHg for systolic BP). Systolic blood pressure of the welder group increased significantly higher than the non-welder group after one year follow up (welder group VS non-welder: 4.13 ± 11.76 VS - 0.15 ± 6.60 mmHg, p = 0.037).
Family And Household Characteristics And Violent Disciplinary Practices Towards The Children In Myanmar: An Analysis Of 2015-2016 Myanmar Demographic And Health Survey, Nyan Linn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: Violence against children is one of the challenging public health problems. Violent disciplines not only affect negative health impacts but also are against children's right. However, those violent methods are still widespread across the countries, especially within the family. For prevention and control, it is required to clearly understand the country-specific information of violent child disciplines. In Myanmar, there are very few studies focusing on this area. This study was aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with violent disciplines against children in Myanmar.Methodology: This study was a secondary data analysis of nationally representative 2015-2016 Myanmar Demographic and …
Neuroprotective Effect Of Passiflora Edulissims Against Amyloid Beta-Induced Neurotoxicity, Shuqin Cao
Neuroprotective Effect Of Passiflora Edulissims Against Amyloid Beta-Induced Neurotoxicity, Shuqin Cao
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a common and devastating disease characterized by pathological aggregations of beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaques extracellularly, and Tau tangles intracellularly. While our understandings of the aetiologies of AD have greatly expanded over the decades, there is no drug available to stop disease progression. This study involves two parts. First, we demonstrate the potential of P. edulis pericarp (PP) extract in protecting against Aβ-mediated neurotoxicity in mammalian cells and Caenorhabditis elegans models of AD. We show PP protects against memory deficit, neuronal loss, and promotes longevity in the Aβ model of AD via stimulation of mitophagy, the selective cellular …
Development Of Asiatic Acid-Loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles For Nose To Brain Delivery: Ex Vivo And In Vivo Evaluation, Tissana Rojanaratha
Development Of Asiatic Acid-Loaded Solid Lipid Nanoparticles For Nose To Brain Delivery: Ex Vivo And In Vivo Evaluation, Tissana Rojanaratha
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Asiatic acid (AA) has neuroprotective properties potential for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Natural waxes with various ratios of tween 80 and span 80 or soybean lecithin were formulated to obtain AA-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (AA-SLN) in order to improve direct nose to brain transport. Optimal AA-SLN had particle size below 200 nm with uniform size distribution as confirmed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) results and zeta potential of nearly -30 mV indicating low risk on particle aggregation. Formulation with rice bran wax, tween80 and soybean lecithin (AA-RwS100) showed the highest drug content and entrapment efficiency of >98%. Differential …
Melanogenesis-Stimulating Isoflavonoids From Dalbergia Parviflora, Ponsawan Netcharoensirisuk
Melanogenesis-Stimulating Isoflavonoids From Dalbergia Parviflora, Ponsawan Netcharoensirisuk
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Melanin, a cellular pigment, found in skin, hair and eyes is produced by melanocytes located at the basal layer of epidermis. Abnormal melanin production causes various pigmentation diseases. Low melanin content or dysfunction of melanogenesis not only decreases self-confidence and the quality of life but also enhances skin damage by external stimuli. Until now, there has been no reported remedy that possesses high efficacy and safety profile for hypopigmentation treatment in human. Development of novel darkening compounds from natural resources has recently become of an interest. In this study, the potent melanin-stimulating agents were screened from 45 compounds isolated from …
Study Of Self-Assembled Hyaluronic Acid Based Nanogel As Solubilization And Stabilization System For Asiatic Acid, Yu Yu Win
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Asiatic acid (AA), natural triterpene found in Centalla asiatica, possesses polypharmacological properties that can contribute to the treatment and prophylaxis of various diseases. However, its hydrophobic nature and rapid metabolic rate lead to poor bioavailability. The aim of this research is to study nanogel system from hyaluronic acid (HA) for solubilization and stability enhancement of AA. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) was conjugated onto HA using carbodiimide reaction followed by 1H NMR characterization. pNIPAM-grafted HA (HA-pNIPAM) nanogels were prepared with three concentrations of polymer, 0.1%, 0.15% and 0.25% w/v in water by sonication method. AA was loaded into the nanogel by incubation method. …

Root-knot nematodes pose a severe threat to worldwide agricultural development. Due to the high toxicity of chemical nematicides, eco-friendly control strategies against root-knot nematodes need to be established. A pot and in vitro experiment were performed to estimate nematicidal potential of Pochonia chlamydosporia. P. chlamydosporia was used alone or in combination with two botanicals for controlling Meloidogyne incognita in chickpea. The laboratory assessment was performed with four prepared concentrations (S, S/2, S/10, S/25) of fungal inoculum of P. chlamydosporia against egg hatching and second-stage juvenile's mortality of M. incognita. All four concentrations reduced egg hatching and increased mortality of J2s. …

Process mining is the art and science of (semi)automatically generating business processes from a large number of logs coming from potentially heterogeneous systems. With the recent advent of Industry 4.0 analog enterprise environments such as floor shops and long supply chains are bound to full digitization. In this context interest in process mining has been invigorated. Multilayer graphs constitute a broad class of combinatorial objects for representing, among others, business processes in a natural and intuitive way. Specifically the concepts of state and transition, central to the majority of existing approaches, are inherent in these graphs and coupled with both …
