The Control Of Safeguarding Children Social Work: A Mixed Methods Study Of The Interaction Between Managerial And Professional Control In A Social Policy Context, Julie Brown Jan 2021

The Control Of Safeguarding Children Social Work: A Mixed Methods Study Of The Interaction Between Managerial And Professional Control In A Social Policy Context, Julie Brown

Other Faculty of Health Theses

While central government guidance has standardised children’s social work processes, social work practice remains fundamentally the application of professional knowledge in complex and unpredictable situations. Existing empirical studies have prioritised the perspective of social workers and their frustration with the changes imposed on them by central government and local management and have neglected the view of management. This mixed methods study includes content analysis of official guidance and an analysis of interviews with local authority managers and social workers. This evidence reveals both the roles and attitudes towards control, of policy makers, managers and practitioners in their exercise of control …

Improving Visual Field Tests For Populations With Advanced Glaucoma And Visual Field Loss In The Periphery, Catherine Bain Jan 2021

Improving Visual Field Tests For Populations With Advanced Glaucoma And Visual Field Loss In The Periphery, Catherine Bain

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The visual field can extend up to 100° in the temporal visual region; however, in patients with glaucoma and other diseases that affect peripheral vision, only the central 30° of the visual field is monitored regularly in clinical practice using static perimetry. These static tests are rapid and robust against human errors due to their testing strategies. However, approximately 80% of the rest of the visual field is less regularly examined due to the length of time it takes to measure, using both static and kinetic stimuli. Currently, there is not an established automated kinetic test to measure the visual …

Can The Value And Acceptability Of A Patient Feedback Tool For Revalidating Psychiatrists Be Improved For Both Patients And Psychiatrists Through Its Co-Production? An Action Research Approach., Rebecca Baines Jan 2021

Can The Value And Acceptability Of A Patient Feedback Tool For Revalidating Psychiatrists Be Improved For Both Patients And Psychiatrists Through Its Co-Production? An Action Research Approach., Rebecca Baines

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Background: Co-production is often suggested as an alternative approach to patient feedback design. However, critical exploration of how co-production may affect the perceived value and acceptability of a patient feedback tool is severely limited, particularly in the context of revalidation for practising psychiatrists. Aim: This research sought to address four research questions: i) how are patients and the public involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of patient feedback tools for practising psychiatrists, if at all; ii) what are patient and psychiatrist perceptions, experiences and aspirations for patient feedback tools in revalidation; iii) how do these compare and iv) can …

The Role Of Daxx In The Selective Autophagy Receptor Sqstm1/P62 Phase Condensation, Yi Yang Jan 2021

The Role Of Daxx In The Selective Autophagy Receptor Sqstm1/P62 Phase Condensation, Yi Yang

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Macroautophagy (‘autophagy’ hereafter) is a lysosome-dependent degradation system for intracellular protein quality control. Autophagy can selectively remove cargo materials, which is dependent on cargo receptors. SQSTM1/p62 (‘p62’ hereafter) is one of the best characterised receptors mediating the autophagic degradation of misfolded proteins, and its body formation is essential for its cargo recognition and clearance. Mounting evidence has revealed that membraneless compartments, participating in various biological processes, are assembled via liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). These phase-separated condensates ensure that cellular activities occur in a spatiotemporally controlled manner and provide a method for concentrating and segregating cellular components. Liquid-like non-membrane condensates present …

An Assessment Of Universal Tumour Associated Antigens In Primary Liver Neoplasms, Oliver Rupar Jan 2021

An Assessment Of Universal Tumour Associated Antigens In Primary Liver Neoplasms, Oliver Rupar

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Rates of primary liver cancer are increasing in the Western world, a fact yet to be reflected in research with most currently undertaken in Asia. Whilst here in the UK, during a diagnostic and therapeutic workup within the NHS, surgically resected tumours are routinely kept in storage for up to thirty years. Meaning there is a huge, currently unused, resource that could potentially be included in clinical research. The regional specialist centre in the Southwest of England has been performing liver resections since 2005, no basic-science research has been performed using these archived specimens. In this research I have assessed …

Exploring The Influence Of Social Relationships On Multisource Feedback Assessments For Uk General Practitioners: A Social Network Analysis, Sebastian Andrew George Stevens Jan 2021

Exploring The Influence Of Social Relationships On Multisource Feedback Assessments For Uk General Practitioners: A Social Network Analysis, Sebastian Andrew George Stevens

Other Faculty of Health Theses

One of the most common approaches to assess the performance of qualified doctors is that of multisource feedback (MSF). Previous research often cites MSF to be a valid, reliable and feasible method of assessing performance. However, potential biases in the self-selection of raters has been highlighted as a concern for the utility of MSF, particularly when used in high-stakes assessments such as medical Revalidation. This research uses general practice as the study setting to explore the extent to which social relationships influence the rater selection choices made by doctors. A case study approach was adopted recruiting three GP practices varying …

Exploring The Design, Use And Impact Of Companion Pet Robots And Automata For Older Adults And People With Dementia, Hannah Bradwell Jan 2021

Exploring The Design, Use And Impact Of Companion Pet Robots And Automata For Older Adults And People With Dementia, Hannah Bradwell

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Companion robots, socially assistive robots typically possessing zoomorphic features, have shown potential in the care of older adults and people with dementia. Previous research demonstrated reduced agitation, anxiety, loneliness and blood pressure for older adults, and reduced carer burden. However, many literature gaps and methodological flaws remained, and there was limited evidence of real-world adoption into health and care practice. In particular, most research involved Paro, the robot seal costing ~£5000, a prohibitive cost for most intended end-users. Furthermore, contradictory research results, robot failures and variable responses of older people suggested sub-optimal robot design. This thesis therefore aimed to expand …

Modulation Of Macrophage And Epithelial Cell Immune Defences By Probiotic Bacteria: Immune Stimulation Versus Suppression, Luma S.Abdulqader Al-Abdulwahid Jan 2021

Modulation Of Macrophage And Epithelial Cell Immune Defences By Probiotic Bacteria: Immune Stimulation Versus Suppression, Luma S.Abdulqader Al-Abdulwahid

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Abstract Probiotic bacteria are live organisms, if consumed in adequate amounts might confer health benefits. These bacteria, such as Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), include a number of strains that have specific health promoting activi-ties, attributed to their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Gut mucosal macrophage subsets play a fundamental role in driving muco-sal immune responses. These include, tolerance, associated with an M2-, regulatory macrophage phenotype and inflammatory activation with an M1-like phenotype. The cross-link between mucosal tolerance and inflammatory cytokine suppression, and augmentation of IL-10 production in the gut relate to endotoxin tolerance. Endotoxin tolerance is a context; it could present …

Collaboration Practices In Intellectual (Learning) Disability Services’ Multidisciplinary Teams, Madeleine Tremblett Jan 2021

Collaboration Practices In Intellectual (Learning) Disability Services’ Multidisciplinary Teams, Madeleine Tremblett

Other Faculty of Health Theses

This thesis takes an approach that combines discursive psychology, conversation analysis and ethnography to explore how collaboration works in practice. Clinical guidance refers to collaboration as the chosen form of teamwork for multidisciplinary teams (MDT). Professionals in intellectual (learning) disability (I(L)D) services are advised by NHS England to collaborate in MDTs to address the multiple and complex needs of clients. However, clinical guidance for healthcare professionals uses the term collaboration without explaining what collaboration might look like. Previous research on collaboration focuses on the barriers and facilitators to collaboration, again treating collaboration as a concept that does not need explanation …

Birth Trauma: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Grace Baptie Jan 2021

Birth Trauma: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Grace Baptie

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Approximately one-third of women appraise their childbirth experience as traumatic and many women experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result. Whilst earlier work concentrated on prevalence and risk factors of clinically significant trauma, recent research focuses on the large group of women who experience childbirth as traumatic but do not necessarily meet the threshold for PTSD. This thesis comprises a mixed-methods design to investigate predisposing factors associated with presentation of postnatal posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and the appraisal of childbirth as a traumatic experience. Specifically, this thesis aims to address the following questions: What perinatal risk factors …

Developing And Embedding A Feasible Digital Health Champion Scheme Into The Nursing Curriculum: A Collaborative Action Research Approach, Toni Page

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Technology can help meet the health needs of service users and carers. However, both local communities and our future workforce require support in becoming aware of and in using such technologies. Universities must do more to prepare our future nurses but these students can also support local communities in the transition to this digital future. This PhD aimed to develop and embed a feasible model offering nursing students the opportunity to support their local community in health technology, while listening to and learning from people’s experiences of healthcare. This study comprised three collaborative action research cycles with multiple stakeholders using …

The Effects Of Mindfulness Meditation On Attention Regulation, Paul Sharpe Jan 2021

The Effects Of Mindfulness Meditation On Attention Regulation, Paul Sharpe

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The research in this thesis tested the claim that mindfulness meditation regulates attention. Attention regulation was operationalised as an improvement on alerting, orienting or executive attention measured using the Attention Network Test (ANT), or a reduction in the attentional blink (AB) effect, measured using a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) task. Chapter 1 reviews the relevant literature. Chapters 2 and 3 report five experiments which tested the effects of Focused Attention Meditation (FAM) on the ANT. In Chapter 2, no effects of brief FAM were found on the ANT in novices (Experiment 1), or long-term meditators (Experiments 2 and 3). …

Dll4 And Jag1 In The Glioblastoma Response To Temozolomide Chemotherapy, Carly Bunston Jan 2021

Dll4 And Jag1 In The Glioblastoma Response To Temozolomide Chemotherapy, Carly Bunston

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Introduction: Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common aggressive primary malignant brain tumour in adults. The current gold standard treatment comprises of surgery followed by radiotherapy and adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy. Prognosis is poor, with a median survival of 14.6 months following diagnosis. Treatment often fails due to intrinsic or acquired TMZ resistance of a small population of cells termed glioma cancer stem cells (GCSCs). A promising target for glioblastoma therapy is the Notch signalling pathway, which can be suppressed using gamma-secretase inhibitors such as dibenzazepine (DBZ). We investigated the effects of the Notch ligands, Delta-like 4 (DLL4) and Jagged-1 (JAG1) …

Music And The Brain: Composing With The Electroencephalogram, Rachel Horrell Jan 2021

Music And The Brain: Composing With The Electroencephalogram, Rachel Horrell

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The field of brain-computer music interfaces have been expanding ever since the first development in the 1960s. Although many brain-computer music interfaces have been developed for the purpose of composing music, these systems have not been accessible to musicians due to the use of complex programming and signal processing mathematics. In addition, these systems have often focused on the process of composing music by allowing for specific note selection, or the formation of structure. While these systems are beneficial for those who cannot compose music the traditional way, such as those with motor disabilities, they do not offer a new …

Social And Commercial Enterprise Interactions: Insights From Uk Business Incubators, Eleanor Browne Jan 2021

Social And Commercial Enterprise Interactions: Insights From Uk Business Incubators, Eleanor Browne

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

With numbers of social enterprises in the UK continuing to grow and innovate, this research responds to the scarcity of information surrounding social and commercial enterprises co-located in business incubators, and asks: how and why do social and commercial enterprises interact in a business incubator? The research provides qualitative insights for a rich understanding of the network dynamics, subtle interactions and influences that occur amongst peer groups of mixed social and commercial enterprises during business incubation. Drawing on social capital theory, the study utilises multiple methods through a practice-led, qualitative methodology. Employing novel observation techniques in business incubation and semi-structured …

A Practice-As-Research Project Utilizing Butler’S (1990) Feminist/ Post-Structuralist Theory Of Gender Performativity, As Well As Connells (2001) System Of Hegemony, Complicity, And Subordination To Interrogate The Formation Of Toxic Masculinities Through Practice-As-Research And Live Art Methodologies, Charlie Cornforth Jan 2021

A Practice-As-Research Project Utilizing Butler’S (1990) Feminist/ Post-Structuralist Theory Of Gender Performativity, As Well As Connells (2001) System Of Hegemony, Complicity, And Subordination To Interrogate The Formation Of Toxic Masculinities Through Practice-As-Research And Live Art Methodologies, Charlie Cornforth

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In the past twenty years or so, the concept of masculinity has come under increasing scrutiny. What used to constitute as socially acceptable behaviour for men to engage in, has increasingly become challenged by developments such as the MeToo movement. There are now stable grounds to argue that there is such thing as a toxic masculinity, an understanding that has been brought about through a series of questions that ask what grounds masculinity is constructing its position of authority and power upon, what behaviours associated with masculinity are bringing harm to both society as a whole, the individual man and …

Norman Lewis On The Peripheral: The Relationship Of An African American Artist And The Abstract Expressionist Movement Through The Decades, 1930-1950, Ione Church

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Abstract Expressionism took the American Art World by storm. However, the contribution of African America artist Norman Lewis is often overshadowed. In recent years Lewis has come to light as a significant artist involved with this movement, although there has been little research identifying this. My research identifies three decades of Lewis’s career as a working artist from 1930- 1950 and examines how the style of his work, politics and society form ideals on his position with the art group. The current history on Lewis is placed within the post colonial theory of race, my research will give a greater …

Governance Of High Sea Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas From A Maltese Perspective, Christopher Cousin Jan 2021

Governance Of High Sea Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas From A Maltese Perspective, Christopher Cousin

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The conservation of marine resources is gaining importance as more research is carried out leading to an increase in public awareness through campaigns and news. One conservation tool that is attracting more attention is commonly referred to as marine protected area (MPA). This tool has been used over many years but its use is increasing. There are various legal instruments that either obligate or encourage the use of MPAs. MPAs can be applied in all areas irrespective of the jurisdiction. However, jurisdiction of the area where a MPA is to be designated, influences the nature of regulations with which the …

Philip Guston’S Absurd And The Sisyphean Affirmation In The Battle For Existentialism, Jason Blacklock Jan 2021

Philip Guston’S Absurd And The Sisyphean Affirmation In The Battle For Existentialism, Jason Blacklock

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Abstract Philip Guston’s Absurd and the Sisyphean Affirmation of the Battle for Existentialism – By Jason Blacklock This dissertation offers an Existentialist interpretation of the life and work of Philip Guston. Discourse regarding avant-garde New York School artists and their knowledge and manipulation of Existentialism has an illustrious rollcall. Dore Ashton and Harold Rosenberg, amongst others have added their powers of exegesis to contemporary work by Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Amongst this canon of America’s great twentieth century Abstract-Expressionists Philip Guston’s work is often noted, but rarely aligned fully with Existentialist and particularly Absurdist values. I …

Lut Lut Lut A Collection Of Poems Accompanied By A Critical Thesis: The Poetics Of The Dérive And Détournement With Reference To The Situationists, Susan Howe And Peter Riley, Sam Kemp

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This project investigates the role of the artistic techniques of the dérive and détournement in the work of contemporary poets Susan Howe and Peter Riley, exploring the ways in which these poets adapt, develop and draw inspiration from Situationist avant-garde practices of the mid to late twentieth century. The study consists of two chapters, preceded and followed by an introduction and conclusion. My introduction introduces the key features of the Situationist theory of psychogeography, a radical walking technique aimed at undermining the spectacle of urban commercialism in 1950s Paris, and demonstrates how the frameworks of the dérive and détournement, key …

William Blake’S Selfhood And The Atomistic Materialism Of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura, Joshua Schouten De Jel Jan 2021

William Blake’S Selfhood And The Atomistic Materialism Of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura, Joshua Schouten De Jel

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis demonstrates for the first time the way in which William Blake aligned his idiosyncratic concept of the Selfhood – the lens through which the despiritualised subject beholds the material world – with the atomistic materialism of the Epicurean school as it was transmitted through the first-century BC Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura. Not only will I argue that Blake was aware of classical atomistic cosmogony and sense-based epistemology, but that he systematically mapped postlapsarian existence onto the philosophical framework of Epicurean cosmogony. As a result, when the subject succumbs to the Selfhood and once the …

Light Dance: Beyond The Dichotomy Of Light And Vision, Seth Riskin Jan 2021

Light Dance: Beyond The Dichotomy Of Light And Vision, Seth Riskin

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

ABSTRACT Light Dance: Beyond the Dichotomy of Light and Vision Seth Riskin This practice-based dissertation focuses on Light Dance, an original artistic practice developed by the author that, in reducing light to its core elements in a setting devoid of other sources of illumination, centers the equivalence of light and vision in experience. Moving with projection instruments attached to his body, the artist articulates geometrically elemental light forms on the boundaries of the room. Through unique artistic technologies and methods, Light Dance creates a visual environment in which light is perceived as a reflexive experience of vision, an inversion of …

Ideas Exchange: Design And The Post Bio-Tech-Body, Agatha Haines Jan 2021

Ideas Exchange: Design And The Post Bio-Tech-Body, Agatha Haines

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis situates speculative design as a valuable tool for thinking about design issues and the body. Bringing together historical, theoretical criticism and practice to show that speculative design is intimately linked with the body. The thesis’ arguments build on the basis that both the body and design have gone through a processes of anatomisation: they have been dissected, separated and segmented into parts and terms. Those parts and terms are then ordered in a fashion which may not necessarily be advantageous intra-disciplinarily, that is for collaborations and discussions within a discipline. A different anatomisation is proposed for more contemporary …

Sense And Sensing: A Critical Enquiry Into Relations Between Hearing-Impaired Children, Vision And Photography, Kevin Robinson Jan 2021

Sense And Sensing: A Critical Enquiry Into Relations Between Hearing-Impaired Children, Vision And Photography, Kevin Robinson

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis explores and critiques attitudes and assumptions related to hearing-impaired, school-level students and their engagement with the educational discipline of photography. It is not uncommon to find that hearing-impaired children are described as visual learners. This thesis argues that the conceptualisation of children as visual learners merely reflects a wider discourse that aims to legitimise a certain practice of schooling as normative. In appearing as common-sense and value neutral, the discourse has the tendency to perpetuate the marginalisation of those senses deemed less noble and the pedagogical insistence on a premise that posits a link between looking, seeing and …

Place And Identity In Italian Photography Through A Study Of The Town Of Lugo, Luca Nostri Jan 2021

Place And Identity In Italian Photography Through A Study Of The Town Of Lugo, Luca Nostri

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This research is framed by the specific context of Italian photography since the late 1970s, which has defined its own aesthetic and cultural identity in relation to the idea of place. The definitive reference point for this context is the group project Viaggio in Italia conceived and curated by photographer Luigi Ghirri and presented in 1984, when an exhibition of three hundred photographs was held in Bari and a catalogue for the project was published. Viaggio in Italia brought together a generation of photographers who were creating a new cultural atmosphere around photography in Italy: they shared a new and …

Prosthetic Realities, Prosthetic Futures: Challenging The Status Quo Of External Breast Prosthesis Design, Rosie Brave Jan 2021

Prosthetic Realities, Prosthetic Futures: Challenging The Status Quo Of External Breast Prosthesis Design, Rosie Brave

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This practice-based research identifies the need and opportunity to update the design approach used in the production of external breast prostheses (EBP) for women post mastectomy. Spurred by accounts of some women’s negative experiences with their EBP, this research took influence from colour psychology, emotional design and consumer psychology to explore the potential to create a satisfying and transformative product and user-experience. Drawing on grounded theory, design ethnography and human-centred design practices, an iterative, empathic and participant-centred design process and methodology emerged. Insights from interviews, cultural probes, co-design activities and solo practice were combined to inform the making of speculative …

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

The argument in this summary concerns intuition as creative decision method in observational documentary film practice and is based upon three films produced, directed, edited and published by the author: In Transit [2011]; Prosperous Mountain [2013]; and Pseudotachylyte [2019]. The films are created with digital technologies employing state of the art High Definition Video cameras, and digital post-production software . This summary will use reflection and analysis to make explicit three aspects of the documentary cinematic process of creation: image, sound, and edit. It will highlight where a space is created to facilitate intuition. The summary will revisit some processes …

Deciphering The Silence: A Literary Journey To Alice E. Kober, Regina Dürig Jan 2021

Deciphering The Silence: A Literary Journey To Alice E. Kober, Regina Dürig

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

On Thursday, 28 September 2017, I embarked upon my Journey to Alice Kober: 48 hours in trains taking me from New York City, where she had lived all her life, to Austin, Texas, where everything that she left behind is stored today. 48 hours of shades of green and mustardy yellow, 48 hours of train whistles, drip coffee and blunt panic attacks from being tucked away under the plastic roof of the compartment at night. 48 hours of hope and expectations regarding the archive material, of finding what has been lost. My journey to Alice Kober’s archive, to her still-existing …

A Relational Ecology Of Photographic Practices: Towards A Non-Anthropocentric Approach To Photography, Jacqueline Knight Jan 2021

A Relational Ecology Of Photographic Practices: Towards A Non-Anthropocentric Approach To Photography, Jacqueline Knight

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis argues that as photography’s technological basis has become more complex and increasingly detached from human vision, a thicker account of photographic practice that moves away from humanist discourse and single authorship can assist in demonstrating a continuity between film and new technological photographic practices. It revisits key concepts in documentary photography such as the ‘decisive moment’ through the filter of particular historical, technological and philosophical ideas that have informed the critical engagement with photography as a media of representation. It reconsiders some orthodox assumptions about photography including the idea that photography is fundamentally a human-centred practice and that …
