A Quality Improvement Evaluation Of An Emergency Department Response System For Psychiatric Patients, Kathryn J. Clagg Jan 2021

A Quality Improvement Evaluation Of An Emergency Department Response System For Psychiatric Patients, Kathryn J. Clagg

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The DNP project was a quality improvement evaluation of an emergency department (ED) response system for psychiatric patients. The identified problem within the organization was a breakdown in care for psychiatric patients in the ED. The practice-focused question was twofold to address whether: (a) the development of a new ED response team would significantly reduce ED wait times, positively affect the left without being seen (LWBS) rates, and improve patient satisfaction for psychiatric patients and (b) the development of a new emergency room response team would improve the perceptions of ED staff on the process. The context, input, process, and …

Knowledge And Perceptions Of Antibiotic Resistance Stewardship Among Prehealth And Agriculture Students, Claudia Maria Da Silva Carvalho

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The global threat of antibiotic resistant infection has resulted in health organizations to compile an antibiotic stewardship program, in which the education of current/future medical prescribers and farmers is central for the preservation of current and future antimicrobial treatments. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the knowledge and perceived threat of antibiotic and antibiotic resistance, as well as the perceived benefit of antibiotic stewardship, among undergraduate students in biology and agriculture at a state university in Kansas. Framed by the health belief model, a cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured online survey of 136 undergraduate …

Exploring The Influences Of Culture On Hand-Hygiene Beliefs Of Foreign-Born Healthcare Workers, Sheila Blanche Davis Jan 2021

Exploring The Influences Of Culture On Hand-Hygiene Beliefs Of Foreign-Born Healthcare Workers, Sheila Blanche Davis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe hand-hygiene practices of nonadherent health care workers (HCWs) are a major threat to patient safety and thus continue to be a concern for healthcare leaders and administrators worldwide. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), which are linked to HCWs' unclean hands, are prevalent throughout global healthcare settings. Global migration in the nursing profession and intercontinental travel among direct patient care providers make it challenging for healthcare leaders to sustain HCWs' adherence to hand-hygiene practices. The purpose of this grounded study was to explore the influence of the cultural beliefs about hand-hygiene practices of foreign-born HCWs. The theory of planned behavior was used …

Nonprofit Strategies For Alternative Revenue Generation And Sustainability, Aretha Lepearl Day

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractIn the post-2008 Great Recession era of a highly volatile global business environment of increased competitiveness, diminishing predictable revenues, and depleting philanthropy, many nonprofit leaders struggle to sustain their organizations. Volatility is important to nonprofit leaders because such fluctuations create unpredictability, which threatens their organizations' financial stability for short-term survivability and long-term sustainability. Grounded in Elkington's triple bottom line conceptual framework, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore nonprofit leaders' strategies for short-term survivability and long-term sustainability. The participants comprised 3 senior leaders in a nonprofit located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States who …

The conceptual framework applied in the study was the technological, pedagogical, content knowledge (TPACK) model, as …

Stress Perceptions And Verbal Commands For Law Enforcement In High-Stress Situations, John Kenneth Gibson Jan 2021

Stress Perceptions And Verbal Commands For Law Enforcement In High-Stress Situations, John Kenneth Gibson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Acute stress can have a negative effect on the physiology and cognitive performance of peace officers when they are engaged in high-stress situations. This could lead to injury or loss of life if a mistaken perception occurs or incorrect decision is made by the officer or suspect. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of stress for peace officers who issue verbal commands to an aggressive role-playing suspect in a use-of-force scenario. The theoretical framework was Lazarus and Folkman's transactional theory of stress and coping. Data were collected from observations, field notes, and semi-structured interviews …

Interactions Among Learning Style Preferences, Generational Cohorts, And Gender, Cassaundra De-Vonne Gilchrist Jan 2021

Interactions Among Learning Style Preferences, Generational Cohorts, And Gender, Cassaundra De-Vonne Gilchrist

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe body of literature on learning -style preferences reflects differences among generational cohorts in the constructs of values, attitudes, and personality. While scholars have theorized learning, styles vary based on membership in generational cohort, very little research has been conducted on generational preferred learning preference. The problem was the need to understand the preferred learning style of multiple generations due to individuals 55 years and older having a longer life expectancy and working beyond retirement age. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental comparative survey study was to determine the learning style score based on generational cohort, gender, and the interaction …

Haitian Informal Entrepreneurs' Ability And Motivation To Formalize Their Microbusinesses, Samanthessa Ramona Jacob

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Microbusiness owners or informal entrepreneurs in developing countries make up 40 to 60% of the informal economy. With a steady increase in unemployment in rural areas of developing countries, individuals live under poverty levels and start microbusinesses as a mean to survive. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the factors that contribute to Haitian informal entrepreneurs' ability and motivation to transition into the formal sector. A narrative inquiry approach was used for this study to bring in-depth meaning to the experiences of informal entrepreneurs in Haiti. For this study, 18 individual interviews of Haitian or Haitian descendant …

Trauma Barriers To Substance Abuse Treatment Engagement Among Formerly Incarcerated Males, Eleonora Vlasta Juliana Jan 2021

Trauma Barriers To Substance Abuse Treatment Engagement Among Formerly Incarcerated Males, Eleonora Vlasta Juliana

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study explored treatment engagement among formerly incarcerated adult males in a community-based substance abuse treatment program who experienced barriers related to sexual and violent trauma histories. Fully engaging in treatment requires a readiness to become and remain sober, and for those who suffer from trauma, such readiness may be absent, and continued substance use may be their way to cope with pain. This study explored a gap in the literature concerning how sexual and violent trauma might play a role as barriers to engaging in substance abuse treatment among formerly incarcerated males. Understanding how such traumas impact treatment engagement …

Predictive Applications Of Debarment List In Public Procurement, Nester Oluwafemi Komolafe Jan 2021

Predictive Applications Of Debarment List In Public Procurement, Nester Oluwafemi Komolafe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Predictive applications of a debarment list involve gathering historical data in the list to capture the relationships between the relevant variables in the data to predict the most likely future outcomes. Exploring whether the data in the debarment list could produce predictive analytics, which agencies may use to deter contractors from committing fraud, is unknown. This study closed the literature gap through a quantitative nonexperimental analysis of secondary data, inspired by real-life administrative decisions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the City of Chicago's debarment list to determine the statistical probability of business entities that may be debarred …

Knowledge Sharing Among Finance Employees In The U.S. Banking Sector, Russell Lascko

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractBanking is one of the most knowledge-intensive sectors, relying heavily on accrued knowledge and the experiences of employees. Knowledge sharing is the most crucial, yet most difficult, process in knowledge management due to human behavior. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the factors that influence finance employees in the banking sector to participate in knowledge sharing with their colleagues. The overarching research question focused on these factors. The conceptual framework included the self-determination theory, theory of planned behavior, Vroom's expectancy theory, and the socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization model. Criteria for the selected participants included more …

Impact Of Social Barrier Removal On Primary Care Use By Managed Care Enrollees, Pamme Lyons-Taylor Jan 2021

Impact Of Social Barrier Removal On Primary Care Use By Managed Care Enrollees, Pamme Lyons-Taylor

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Personal health represents a complex relationship among social, physical, and emotional factors that can be influenced by health-seeking behaviors. Prior research indicates that greater use of preventive services leads to longer life and lower healthcare costs. For some populations, evidence suggests that social barriers hinder access to preventive services. To better understand the relationship between social factors and the other personal-health factors, de-identified healthcare claims and social service encounter data for 4,480 low-income individuals enrolled in Medicare Advantage or Managed Medicaid at one national health insurance were examined using a retrospective, quasi-experimental design for services rendered between October 1, 2014 …

Strategically Revealing Intentions In General Lotto Games, Keith Paarporn, Rahul Chandan, Dan Kovenock, Mahnoosh Alizadeh, Jason R. Marden Jan 2021

Strategically Revealing Intentions In General Lotto Games, Keith Paarporn, Rahul Chandan, Dan Kovenock, Mahnoosh Alizadeh, Jason R. Marden

ESI Working Papers

Strategic decision-making in uncertain and adversarial environments is crucial for the security of modern systems and infrastructures. A salient feature of many optimal decision-making policies is a level of unpredictability, or randomness, which helps to keep an adversary uncertain about the system’s behavior. This paper seeks to explore decision-making policies on the other end of the spectrum – namely, whether there are benefits in revealing one’s strategic intentions to an opponent before engaging in competition. We study these scenarios in a well-studied model of competitive resource allocation problem known as General Lotto games. In the classic formulation, two competing players simultaneously …

The Art Of Concession In General Lotto Games, Rahul Chandan, Keith Paarporn, Dan Kovenock, Mahnoosh Alizadeh, Jason R. Marden Jan 2021

The Art Of Concession In General Lotto Games, Rahul Chandan, Keith Paarporn, Dan Kovenock, Mahnoosh Alizadeh, Jason R. Marden

ESI Working Papers

Success in adversarial environments often requires investment into additional resources in order to improve one’s competitive position. But, can intentionally decreasing one’s own competitiveness ever provide strategic benefits in such settings? In this paper, we focus on characterizing the role of “concessions” as a component of strategic decision making. Specifically, we investigate whether a player can gain an advantage by either conceding budgetary resources or conceding valuable prizes to an opponent. While one might na¨ıvely assume that the player cannot, our work demonstrates that – perhaps surprisingly – concessions do offer strategic benefits when made correctly. In the context of …

Partnership, Democracy, And Self-Rule In Jewish Law, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 2021

Partnership, Democracy, And Self-Rule In Jewish Law, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Touro Law Review

Liberal political theory has long relied on a metaphor of contract: autonomous adults coming together to agree, by unanimous consent, on the basic structure of a just society. But contract is a strange metaphor with which to explain society. Contract law is based on a morality of strangers acting at arms-length. In contrast, decent societies and the governments they set for themselves must be based on a commitment of mutual responsibility. What makes us fellow citizens—fellows of any variety—is accepting that we are all in this together. Jewish legal and midrashic traditions can be a useful corrective to the atomistic …
