This paper develops a composite absolute paleointensity record for Holocene paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) from central North America. Twelve full-vector (inclination, declination, paleointensity) PSV records were assessed in order to build the composite record. Nine of the paleointensity records come from sediment paleomagnetic studies and are considered relative in intensity. Three of the paleointensity records come from absolute paleointensity measurements of archeological materials and lava flows. This paper develops a new method to normalize the sediment relative paleointensity records to the absolute intensity records. The final composite paleointensity record describes intensity variability over a region of Central North America delineated …

Either the triggering of large earthquakes on a fault hosting aseismic slip or the triggering of slow slip events (SSE) by passing seismic waves involve seismological questions with important hazard implications. Just a few observations plausibly suggest that such interactions actually happen in nature. In this study we show that three recent devastating earthquakes in Mexico are likely related to SSEs, describing a cascade of events interacting with each other on a regional scale via quasi-static and/or dynamic perturbations across the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. Such interaction seems to be conditioned by the transient memory of Earth materials subject …

Quantifying Nitrogen Fixation By Heterotrophic Bacteria In Sinking Marine Particles, Subhendu Chakraborty, Ken H. Andersen, André W. Visser, Keisuke Inomura, Michael J. Follows, Lasse Riemann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Nitrogen (N 2) fixation by heterotrophic bacteria associated with sinking particles contributes to marine N cycling, but a mechanistic understanding of its regulation and significance are not available. Here we develop a mathematical model for unicellular heterotrophic bacteria growing on sinking marine particles. These bacteria can fix N 2 under suitable environmental conditions. We find that the interactive effects of polysaccharide and polypeptide concentrations, sinking speed of particles, and surrounding O 2 and NO3− concentrations determine the N 2 fixation rate inside particles. N 2 fixation inside sinking particles is mainly fueled by SO42− respiration rather than NO3− respiration. Our …

Entrepreneurship Education And Founding Passion: The Moderating Role Of Entrepreneurial Family Background, Younggeun Lee, Andrés Felipe Cortés, Minjoo Joo Dec 2021

Entrepreneurship Education And Founding Passion: The Moderating Role Of Entrepreneurial Family Background, Younggeun Lee, Andrés Felipe Cortés, Minjoo Joo

WCBT Faculty Publications

In this paper, we examine the relationship between entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial passion. Despite the advancement of entrepreneurship education literature and the increasing focus on entrepreneurship education in business schools, we lack empirical exploration on how entrepreneurship education can impact students’ passion for founding new organizations. We hypothesize that students who take entrepreneurship classes would develop high levels of founding passion due to a great perception of skills and abilities that increase positive emotions and decrease negative emotions about the entrepreneurship process. Moreover, we draw on the literature on role models to suggest that students’ entrepreneurial family background (students whose …

A Pipeline For Enhanced Multimodal 2d Imaging Of Concrete Structures, Sina Mehdinia, Thomas Schumacher, Xubo Song, Eric A. Wan

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present an imaging pipeline to achieve enhanced images of the interior of concrete from ground penetrating radar (GPR) and ultrasonic echo array (UEA) measurements. This work lays the foundation for an advanced yet practical imaging tool to assess concrete structures. Specifically, we propose an enhanced two-dimensional (2D) total focusing method (XTFM) to reconstruct images from raw GPR and UEA data. The proposed XTFM algorithm integrates total focusing method (TFM) and synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) concepts to post-process large independent and interelement measurements from both modalities in a computationally efficient way. Furthermore, we introduce a novel 2D image fusion …

The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of household responsibilities on working fathers’ experiences of work-family conflict and well-being, and to consider potential moderating effects of gender role ideology and identity salience. Results supported a positive relationship between household responsibilities and perceived stress in working fathers. …

Writing Black Characters Out Of The Margins Of Fantasy With Secrets Of Candeo, Julienne Parks Dec 2021

Writing Black Characters Out Of The Margins Of Fantasy With Secrets Of Candeo, Julienne Parks

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The crawling pace that the production of diverse fantasy books has set for itself continues to reveal that Black characters and the representation of Blackness in fiction is lacking in a detrimental way. Specifically speaking, this thesis focuses on the prevalent lack of Black characters in the fantasy genre, where Black people are cast as minor characters to a white protagonist’s story like Angela Johnson from Harry Potter; cast as abominations of anti-Black stereotypes in monsters like the Uruk-hai of Lord of the Rings; and cast as side(kick) characters like Vetch from Earthsea, aka Black characters who are …

Lgb Employment And Civil Rights Protections: Emphasizing Existing And Potential Policy For Improving The Lgb Hiring, Alexa Nicole Massiquet Dec 2021

Lgb Employment And Civil Rights Protections: Emphasizing Existing And Potential Policy For Improving The Lgb Hiring, Alexa Nicole Massiquet

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Much of the LGB employment research addressing discrimination suggests culture and policy changes for attracting more and retaining their current LGB employees. Some research suggests a cyclical nature between the acceptance of progressive policy and inclusive culture. While many researchers discuss the need for policies protecting LGB employees, little has been written about exactly how to do that. One method is to emphasize LGB non-discrimination policy and already existing gender non-discrimination policy during the hiring process. I built upon the work of other researchers, who emphasized LGB nondiscrimination during the hiring process by additionally emphasizing protections for employees based on …

Classifying Electrocardiogram With Machine Learning Techniques, Hillal Jarrar

Master's Theses

Classifying the electrocardiogram is of clinical importance because classification can be used to diagnose patients with cardiac arrhythmias. Many industries utilize machine learning techniques that consist of feature extraction methods followed by Naive- Bayesian classification in order to detect faults within machinery. Machine learning techniques that analyze vibrational machine data in a mechanical application may be used to analyze electrical data in a physiological application. Three of the most common feature extraction methods used to prepare machine vibration data for Naive-Bayesian classification are the Fourier transform, the Hilbert transform, and the Wavelet Packet transform. Each machine learning technique consists of …
