Cultivating Financial Literacy Through Secondary School Economics Education: Access To Powerful Knowledge, Emanuel Mizzi
Cultivating Financial Literacy Through Secondary School Economics Education: Access To Powerful Knowledge, Emanuel Mizzi
International Journal for Business Education
‘Powerful knowledge’ is disciplinary knowledge that when learned, empowers students to make decisions in a way that will influence their lives in a positive way (Young, 2008). In this paper, the researcher employs this construct to explore the financial literacy education arising from studying secondary school economics. It emerges from the author’s research aimed at exploring teaching and learning in secondary school Maltese economics classrooms. The underlying conceptual framework for this study is critical realism. The study design consisted of interviewing and observing 14 economics teachers, together with four focus groups interviews with students. Data were analyzed by employing thematic …

Gun violence drastically increased in urban cities following the ease of shutdown restric-tions associated with the Coronavirus Pandemic. The association of gun violence and COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of taking a public health perspective, particularly as it relates to impacts on the Black community. In this article we discuss macro-level factors and community traumas in the city of New Orleans, an area that has had longstanding issues related to gun violence. Community structural issues, traumatic stress from disasters, and recommendations to address disparities in social determinants of health are discussed.

Study Design: Retrospective Review. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and magnitude of pedicle asymmetry as well as spinous process deviation in the healthy lumbar spine. Summary of Background Data: Minimally invasive spine surgery relies on fluoroscopic imaging as bony landmarks used for instrumentation are not exposed. The precision of techniques used to determine vertebral body rotation intraoperatively may be confounded by anatomic variation or pathology. Here, we investigate the physiologic variation in different anatomic structures of the lumbar spine used for percutaneous pedicle screw placement. Methods: 100 normal lumbar CT scans, without evidence of …

Background: Convalescent plasma is being used widely as a treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the clinical efficacy of COVID-19 convalescent plasma is unclear. Methods: The Passive Immunity Trial for Our Nation (PassITON) is a multicenter, placebo-controlled, blinded, randomized clinical trial being conducted in the USA to provide high-quality evidence on the efficacy of COVID-19 convalescent plasma as a treatment for adults hospitalized with symptomatic disease. Adults hospitalized with COVID-19 with respiratory symptoms for less than 14 days are eligible. Enrolled patients are randomized in a 1:1 ratio to 1 unit (200–399 mL) of COVID-19 convalescent plasma that has …
Alterations In Excitatory And Inhibitory Synaptic Development Within The Mesolimbic Dopamine Pathway In A Mouse Model Of Prenatal Drug Exposure, Taylor Boggess, James C. Williamson, Ethan B. Niebergall, Hannah Sexton, Richard D. Egleton, Larry Grover, Chris Risher
Alterations In Excitatory And Inhibitory Synaptic Development Within The Mesolimbic Dopamine Pathway In A Mouse Model Of Prenatal Drug Exposure, Taylor Boggess, James C. Williamson, Ethan B. Niebergall, Hannah Sexton, Richard D. Egleton, Larry Grover, Chris Risher

The rise in rates of opioid abuse in recent years in the United States has led to a dramatic increase in the incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Despite improved understanding of NAS and its acute symptoms, there remains a paucity of information regarding the long-term effects of prenatal exposure to drugs of abuse on neurological development. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the effects of prenatal drug exposure on synaptic connectivity within brain regions associated with the mesolimbic dopamine pathway, the primary reward pathway associated with drug abuse and addiction, in a mouse model. Our secondary …

Neuronal CaMKII holoenzymes (a and b isoforms) enable molecular signal computation underlying learning and memory but also mediate excitotoxic neuronal death. Here, we provide a comparative analysis of these signaling devices, using single-particle electron microscopy (EM) in combination with biochemical and live cell imaging studies. In the basal state, both isoforms assemble mainly as 12-mers (but also 14-mers and even 16-mers for the b isoform). CaMKIIa and b isoforms adopt an ensemble of extended activatable states (with average radius of 12.6 versus 16.8 nm, respectively), characterized by multiple transient intra- and interholoenzyme interactions associated with distinct functional properties. The …

As universities and colleges begin to define ways to move forward in a post-COVID year, Psalm 23 offers some thoughtful practices for how to return to a new normal while still dealing with the side effects of pandemic pivoting. This article considers what provisions the Lord offers through the paradigm of Psalm 23. This Psalm offers helpful perspective, context, an overarching vision of life, and specific steps that are vital in recovering from valley experiences as people move towards a restored and flourishing new normal.

Librarians have an opportunity to assist faculty and students in adoption and use of OER, or Open Educational Resources. Faculty and students present differing perspectives and responses to OER that may inhibit their use. Libraries are known for providing access to resources and educational training or workshops on the use of new technologies and existing or new resources. Libraries are also accustomed to providing proxied access to online resources, hosting repositories and developing policies for management, curation and collection of a wide array of materials and resources. By helping to develop and organize an OER initiative of any kind at …

Difference Makers: A Faith Integration Art And Writing Project, Jennifer Blair
Difference Makers: A Faith Integration Art And Writing Project, Jennifer Blair
The Christian Librarian
An internal faith integration project grant at a private, Christian evangelical Southern California University was awarded to one library faculty member in the university library. This grant funded a faith-based art and writing project in the library based on the theme of being a difference maker, a part of the university’s mission for undergraduate and graduate students over the course of one traditional academic year. The grant funded supplies towards the project and scholarships to participating students. The project was led in the library to: enhance student engagement, integrate faith and art, and provide a shared experience with students. Inquiry-based …
