Exploration Of Dark Chemical Genomics Space Via Portal Learning: Applied To Targeting The Undruggable Genome And Covid-19 Anti-Infective Polypharmacology, Tian Cai, Li Xie, Muge Chen, Yang Liu, Di He, Shuo Zhang, Cameron Mura, Philip Boume, Lei Xie

Publications and Research

Advances in biomedicine are largely fueled by exploring uncharted territories of human biology. Machine learning can both enable and accelerate discovery, but faces a fundamental hurdle when applied to unseen data with distributions that differ from previously observed ones—a common dilemma in scientific inquiry. We have developed a new deep learning framework, called Portal Learning , to explore dark chemical and biological space. Three key, novel components of our approach include: (i) end-to-end, step-wise transfer learning, in recognition of biology’s sequence-structure-function paradigm, (ii) out-of-cluster meta-learning, and (iii) stress model selection. Portal Learning provides a practical solution to the out-of-distribution (OOD) …

Care And Compassion, Daisy Cuevas

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many students who struggle with behavioral and mental health issues have a difficult time succeeding in school. Harden Middle School’s Wellness Center is where students struggling with socioemotional, mental, and behavioral health can come to receive support. The Care & Compassion program was created to address students who have more than five F’s or a zero-grade point average (GPA) and are failing classes at a high rate. A lack of parental and student engagement in distance learning, as well as depression due to isolation caused students to fall behind, fail classes and increased mental health concerns. Therefore, the Care & …

Queer Generational Connection Panel, Sam Hoffman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This project was completed during my time working with the Epicenter in Salinas in their Our Gente program. Just as the program is designed to strengthen and support the LGBTQ+ youth and community in the area, this project seeks to address a growing gap between generations within the LGBTQ+ community. This gap grows due to a lack of both technological literacy, social in-person isolation, and a lack of accessible LGBTQ+ elders to provide information and oral history to those younger generations within the community. This project aims to address this with the Queer Generational Connection Panel. The Queer Generational Connection …

Rainbow Impostors: Impostor Syndrome In The Lgbtq+ Community, Kira C. Rideout

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Most people do not enjoy feeling like they are not enough or as like they are not a part of their community. As human beings we are social creatures and our communities play an essential role both in our development as we grow up and for our overall emotional well-being as we continue to live our lives. When people feel like they are an outcast or like they are not contributing to the progress of their community it can have a negative impact on their state of mind. This sense of self-doubt can cause individuals to realize their fear of …

On The Role Of Matrix-Weights Elements In Consensus Algorithms For Multi-Agent Systems, Joshua Ogbebor, Xiangyu Meng Dec 2021

On The Role Of Matrix-Weights Elements In Consensus Algorithms For Multi-Agent Systems, Joshua Ogbebor, Xiangyu Meng

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the roles of the matrix weight elements in matrix-weighted consensus. The consensus algorithms dictate that all agents reach consensus when the weighted graph is connected. However, it is not always the case for matrix weighted graphs. The conditions leading to different types of consensus have been extensively analysed based on the properties of matrix-weighted Laplacians and graph theoretic methods. However, in practice, there is concern on how to pick matrix-weights to achieve some desired consensus, or how the change of elements in matrix weights affects the consensus algorithm. By selecting the elements in the matrix weights, different …

Spatially Periodic Vapor Bubble Activity During Subcooled Pool Boiling On 1d Aluminum Alloy Micro-Fin Arrays, Brendon Doran, Bin Zhang, Shayan Davani, Kojo Asiamah Osafo, Owen Sutka, Abigail Walker, Nicholas Mueller, Stephen Akwaboa, Patrick Mensah, W. J. Meng, Arden L. Moore

Faculty Publications

Within the broad field of micro- and nano- scale surface modification to improve pool boiling performance, micro-fin arrays are especially attractive due to their ability to significantly increase wetted surface area with minimal increase in size or weight compared to macroscopic fins. In addition, their regular and repeating geometry enables greater potential for parametric optimization, uniformity, and repeatability as compared to more randomized alternatives. However, the presence of a regular, repeating microscale pattern on a heated surface has previously been shown to create alternating regions of liquid and vapor flow at small length scales which can strongly affect the macroscopic …

Experimental Investigation Of The Aerodynamics Of A Large Industrial Building With Parapet, Aly Mousaad Aly, Matthew Thomas, Hamzeh Gol-Zaroudi

Faculty Publications

The aerodynamic performance of a roof depends significantly on its shape and size, among other factors. For instance, large roofs of industrial low-rise buildings may behave differently compared to those of residential homes. The main objective of this study is to experimentally investigate how perimeter solid parapets can alter the flow pattern around a low-rise building with a large aspect ratio of width/height of about 7.6, the case of industrial buildings/shopping centers. Solid parapets of varied sizes are added to the roof and tested in an open-jet simulator in a comparative study to understand their impact on roof pressure coefficients. …

Terror Tactics: Vehicular Attacks In Israel, Garrett Smith Dec 2021

Terror Tactics: Vehicular Attacks In Israel, Garrett Smith

Honors Theses

Vehicular ramming attacks are a relatively new phenomenon within transnational terrorism. Their use is concentrated heavily within Israel and the West Bank. Using data from the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database, I conduct an analysis of automobilebased terrorist attacks in Israel and the West Bank. I identify examine the relationship between Israeli counterterrorism policy, specifically the institution of barriers to physical movement, and the adoption of vehicle ramming tactics. These walls and checkpoints inadvertently provoke vehicle ramming attacks, even if effective at reducing firearm and explosive-based attacks. Exploration of existing literature on terrorist tactic selection suggests that vehicular attacks …

The Role Of The Serine/Threonine Phosphatase Pstp In The Mycobacterial Cell Wall Regulation, Farah Shamma Dec 2021

The Role Of The Serine/Threonine Phosphatase Pstp In The Mycobacterial Cell Wall Regulation, Farah Shamma

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the causative agent of the deadly infection Tuberculosis (TB). The current standard antibiotic regimen for TB treatment combines fours drugs to be taken for at least six months. Mtb shows intrinsic phenotypic tolerance to antibiotics contributing to the long treatment regimen. In addition, Mtb cells can achieve a non-replicating state exhibiting antibiotic tolerance, reduced metabolism and altered cell wall staining. The changes in the cell wall and reduced permeability to antibiotics in stressed cells suggest that the regulation of the cell wall is a major contributor to antibiotic tolerance. The mycobacterial cell wall consists of covalently …

Local as well as national economy and safety depend on the network characteristics of the transportation infrastructures. Destruction of transportation infrastructures causes the direct cost of the reconstruction as well as indirect cost due to loss of mobility. In addition, emergency response and recovery cannot be rendered if access to the affected community is hampered due to a damaged transportation network. Hence, researchers as well national and international organizations are focusing more on a resilience-based approach instead of a traditional recovery-based approach for the transportation infrastructures recently. As a result, there exist a high number of research articles that developed …
