For civilization and citizenship: emancipation, empire, and the creation of the black citizen-soldier tradition examines the origins and evolution of black military service and its relation to how black and white Americans understood citizenship from the Civil War Era to the First World War. This dissertation analyzes how different generations of black soldiers pursued full, civic citizenship through their military service and formed their own vision of citizenship rooted in military service and how the War Department sought to deal with the tensions created by a biracial Army. Written from a Zambian perspective, this leading study shows how the British colony of Northern Rhodesia (later Zambia) organized and deployed human, military, and natural resources during and after the Second World War.
The Second World War brought unprecedented pressures to bear on Britain’s empire, which then included colonial Northern Rhodesia. Through new archival materials and oral histories, War and Society in Colonial Zambia tells—from an African perspective—the story of how the colony organized its human and natural resources on behalf of the imperial government.

Real-time water quality monitoring is crucial due to land utilization increases which can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems from surface water runoff. Conventional monitoring methodologies are laborious, expensive, and spatio-temporally limited. Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), equipped with sensors/instrumentation, serve as mobile sampling stations that reduce labor and enhance data resolution. However, ASV autopilot navigational accuracy is affected by environmental forces (wind, current, and waves) that can alter trajectories of planned paths and negatively affect spatio-temporal resolution of water quality data. Terminal ballistics study multivariate behavior and aftermath of projectile and target interactions. Tests and models are often based on monolithic armors, however, layered and spaced armors are common in real world applications. Such configurations add complexities that require research to understand their effects on terminal ballistics. The ballistic limit velocity (V50) represents the speed where armor perforation probability is 50%. It is used for quantitative comparison of protection capabilities for different armors. This research studied the V50 of spaced and layered A36 steel armors against fragment simulating projectiles (FSPs). Four methods for estimating armor V50 were evaluated and compared to …

Strivings For Sovereignty: Alexander Mcgillivray, Creek Warfare, And Diplomacy, 1783-1790, Thomas D. Watson

The outcome of the American Revolution left the Creek confederacy in a perilous state. Most Creeks had sided with the British and were dismayed when they learned in 1783 that Britain had bought peace largely at their expense. Alexander McGillivray, the half-breed Creek, spoke for his people when he conveyed their anger to British authorities at finding their “country betrayed . . . and divided between the Spaniards and Americans.“

Fun Behind The Wire?: Francis “Huck” O’Neill And The Canadian Pow Experience In Hong Kong, 1941-1945, Michael B. Pass
Canadian Military History
Many prior studies of Canadian POWs during the Pacific War have focused on the sadism and mistreatment of their Japanese jailors, helping to make this a dominant image of the conflict. This article moderates this view by discrediting the notion that Japanese soldiers were motivated by an omnipresent belief in “bushido,” as well as by studying newly discovered documents produced in captivity by Canadian Auxiliary Services Officer Francis O’Neill. It argues that Japanese conduct towards POWs was more variable than previously recognised and highlights moments of levity and fun as O’Neill and his fellow prisoners organised sporting events, games and …

The significance of the navy’s role in the Second Seminole War has often been overlooked, especially its impact upon the Seminole nation through the many naval canoe expeditions into the Everglades during the last years of the war. Yet the fact remains that these incursions caused the Seminole people to break up their their war bands and resort to small family groups to avoid the pursuing sailors and marines. Such dispersal destroyed the Indians’ ability to maintain an effective military posture against the United States forces in southern Florida.
