The Gibraltar Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Albert Manucy
The Gibraltar Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Albert Manucy
Florida Historical Quarterly
A hundred years ago the United States was suffering frequent growing pains. The Louisiana and Florida cessions had uncorked the Mississippi, and the hardy pioneers of its valley were floating tons of produce down-river to New Orleans. From that growing port Yankee merchantman, flying Dutchman, and British brig edged out into the Gulf Stream and headed for the narrow mouth of the Gulf where they swept through the Straits past Tortugas with the Havannah to starboard, and the two scarce thirty leagues apart.

Open World Regulation: The Urgent Need For Federal Legislation On Video Game Loot Boxes, Alex Reyes
Open World Regulation: The Urgent Need For Federal Legislation On Video Game Loot Boxes, Alex Reyes
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Loot boxes are items in video games that contain randomized prizes that players can purchase with real-world money. In recent years, loot boxes have come under scrutiny because the relationship between behavior and the underlying mechanics of loot boxes are similar to that of addictive behaviors associated with real-world gambling. Many papers suggest solutions focused on industry changes without direct regulation. However, these papers neglect the enormous profit incentive to maintain a business practice which can have detrimental behavioral effects on children. The United States federal government must take example from a growing number of European countries and ban the …

Recent advances in natural language processing have enabled automation of a wide range of tasks, including machine translation, named entity recognition, and sentiment analysis. Automated summarization of documents, or groups of documents, however, has remained elusive, with many efforts limited to extraction of keywords, key phrases, or key sentences. Accurate abstractive summarization has yet to be achieved due to the inherent difficulty of the problem, and limited availability of training data. In this paper, we propose a topic-centric unsupervised multi-document summarization framework to generate extractive and abstractive summaries for groups of scientific articles across 20 Fields of Study (FoS) in …
Temple Of Peace : International Cooperation And Stability Since 1945, Ingo Trauschweizer
Temple Of Peace : International Cooperation And Stability Since 1945, Ingo Trauschweizer
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
This collection raises timely questions about peace and stability as it interrogates the past and present status of international relations.
The post–World War II liberal international order, upheld by organizations such as the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and similar alliances, aspired to ensure decades of collective security, economic stability, and the rule of law. All of this was a negotiated process that required compromise—and yet it did not make for a peaceful world.
When Winston Churchill referred to the UN framework as “the temple of peace” in his famous 1946 Iron Curtain speech, he maintained that international …
British And Spanish Fortifications Of Pensacola, 1781-1821, Stanley Faye
British And Spanish Fortifications Of Pensacola, 1781-1821, Stanley Faye
Florida Historical Quarterly
Late in the war for the independence of the United States, Spain joined France and this country in their contest with British power. The Spanish commandant of St. Louis sent a. company across the Illinois prairies to attack a British post beyond Lake Michigan; a larger force from New Orleans occupied the district of Baton Rouge and other western regions of British West Florida, and in March 1781 the governor of Spanish Louisiana came by land and sea and laid siege to British Pensacola.

Spanish Fortifications Of Pensacola, 1698-1763, Stanley Faye
Florida Historical Quarterly
Spain knew toward the end of the seventeenth century that her enemy France soon would be colonizing the Mississippi valley. Wilderness guarded Mexico (New Spain) from an attack by any French soldiers who should garrison the future posts of Louisiana. In order that a hostile fleet might not sail against Spanish ports of the Gulf, Spain took steps to occupy the one still unoccupied Gulf port deep enough to serve as base for such a fleet. 1 So in April of 1693 a Mexican mathematician, Don Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora, led an official expedition into Pensacola bay to investigate …
The Confederate Baggage And Treasure Train Ends Its Flight In Florida: A Diary Of Tench Francis Tilghman
Florida Historical Quarterly
Editor’s note : The widespread interest aroused by A. J. Hanna’s latest publication FLIGHT INTO OBLIVION suggests that readers of the QUARTERLY will wish to read the diary of Tench Francis Tilghman on which a chapter of that book is based. In editing the diary Professcr Hanna* has used the mass of materials he assembled through years of research for his book to give us a picture of conditions in Florida in 1865. For this he has a noteworthy heritage, as each branch of his family came to Florida before the War, and two of his great-grandfathers were here before …

Research On The Method Of Operational Concept Description Based On Sysml, Siming Peng, Xiao Gang, Qingzhang Yu, Zeming Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: For the convenience of understanding and communication between researchers among different domains, the standardized method for operational concept description is preferred. Hence, based on the principles of systems architecture, the System Model Language (SysML) is proposed for the visualized and standardized description of operational concept. The form of combination for Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) and SysML during the description of operational concept is analyzed, and the multi-view point products are used to descript the operational background, capability requirement and systems architecture as well as the operational activity of operational concept. The "Distributed Lethality" is utilized as an …

Combined with the requirements of the system countermeasure for the fidelity, real-time and accuracy of the air vehicle modeling, based on the original air vehicle motion model, by reducing variables, simplifying parameters, equivalent calculation and other methods, a fast flight maneuver simulation modeling method is derived, which can realize the correct modeling of the trajectory and attitude of the aircraft, conform to the general flight physical laws, meet …
Spanish Contributions In Florida To American Culture, Verne E. Chatelain
Spanish Contributions In Florida To American Culture, Verne E. Chatelain
Florida Historical Quarterly
Among the numerous steps taken by Spain during the sixteenth century in its efforts to establish dominion over the New World, none are deserving of greater attention from the standpoint of our own national history than the founding of St. Augustine in the year 1565. The fact that this little settlement which was only one of approximately 200 Spanish towns and cities then existing in the Indies, remained a Spanish colony for nearly two centuries and was always an indispensable factor in the defensive strategy employed by Spain for safe-guarding its commerce as well as in perpetuating its control over …

The Florida Militia And The Affair At Withlacoochee, Samuel E. Cobb
The Florida Militia And The Affair At Withlacoochee, Samuel E. Cobb
Florida Historical Quarterly
Many varied types of organizations, generally spoken of as the militia, came into existence during the Seminole wars in Florida. They ranged from ephemeral units, organized for a particular purpose and at a particular time which were disbanded after a retaliatory attack had been made on the Indians, or the raiding Indians had been dispersed to the fairly well organized military unit, mobilized under the authority of the territorial and national governments and attached to the Federal army.

Next year marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the convention which framed Florida’s first constitution. The legislature at its last session provided for the celebration of that centennial at the site of old St. Joseph, where on December 3, 1838 there gathered a body of Floridians which has never been equalled in prominence and ability*. In the last issue of the Quarterly the known facts were told of the decision to hold the convention, the election of delegates, the preparations made for the meeting, and the first day’s proceedings. The account will be continued through the next several numbers. It is …
An Epistemological Account Of The Logic Of Propaganda, Michael Badalamenti
An Epistemological Account Of The Logic Of Propaganda, Michael Badalamenti
Proceedings of GREAT Day
Propaganda is an un-avoidable feature of modern society. It has been identified with multiple global conflicts, oppressive totalitarianisms, and misinformation campaigns that threaten democracy. Despite the world’s popularization in discourse, it remains somewhat ambiguous, begetting many attempts to define and analyze the concept of propaganda. This project contributes to this effort by examining how propaganda involves itself in logical forms of reasoning and judging its value from an epistemological perspective. Propaganda can be interpreted through logically argumentative forms. These arguments are always improper, involving an invalid form or false proposition; therefore, propaganda cannot directly provide real knowledge. Nevertheless, it succeeds …

“Natural Ties For Patriotic Purposes": The Committee On Public Information, Americanization, And Swedish-American Transnationalism, Race L. Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
The Committee on Public Information (CPI) was the official propaganda agency of the United States during the First World War, seeking to homogenize American public opinion and spread American ideals across the globe. Through a case study of Edwin Björkman’s work among Swedish Americans, this thesis illuminates how the CPI approached its work among immigrants, engaging questions of Americanization and transnationalism. Through an analysis of the John Ericsson League of Patriotic Service and the Scandinavian Bureau—both its domestic and foreign operations—this thesis argues that Edwin Björkman and the CPI promoted cultural pluralism rather than assimilation to a dominant Anglo-American culture. …

This research is one of the important researches that examines the methods of propaganda of the Iraqi political discourse through the study and the analysis of the content of the Iraqi Prime Minister's speech at the weekly conference. The researcher finds that there are a number of propaganda methods used by the Prime Minister to convey his idea in a way that suits the objectives that he seeks to achieve through political discourse directed to the Iraqi nation. This sample represents a four-month study by the fact that in each month there are four press conferences held by the Prime …

Purdue University Press Books
Pioneer Science and the Great Plagues covers the century when infectious plagues—anthrax, tuberculosis, tetanus, plague, smallpox, and polio—were conquered, and details the important role that veterinary scientists played. The narrative is driven by astonishing events that centered on animal disease: the influenza pandemic of 1872, discovery of the causes of anthrax and tuberculosis in the 1880s, conquest of Texas cattle fever and then yellow fever, German anthrax attacks on the United States during World War I, the tuberculin war of 1931, Japanese biological warfare in the 1940s, and today’s bioterror dangers.
Veterinary science in the rural Midwest arose from agriculture, …
Practicality Or Principle: A Comparative Study Of The Origin Of Legal Protections On Gun Rights, Robert (Rj) Haskin
Practicality Or Principle: A Comparative Study Of The Origin Of Legal Protections On Gun Rights, Robert (Rj) Haskin
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This study examines the legal protections of the right to bear arms as an extension of John Locke’s principles of government. Whereas most studies of the right to bear arms focus on the contemporary practical consequences of an armed populace, I focus on the foundations of the right and how it has been exercised across the diverse circumstances of the U.S. and Azerbaijan to achieve the ideal of self-determination. Specifically, I detail and compare the political histories of each country leading up to their independence and how they obey Locke’s precepts. Given that the chief commonality between the two countries …

Are Terrorist Networks Just Glorified Criminal Cells?, Elie Alhajjar, Ryan Fameli, Shane Warren
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
The notions of organized crime and terrorism have an old and rich history around the globe. Researchers and practitioners have been studying events and phenomena related to these notions for a long time. There are pointers in the literature in which it is misleading to see the unfair comparison between terrorist and criminal networks with the argument that all actors involved in these networks are simply evil individuals. In this paper, we conduct a systematic study of the operational structure of such networks from a network science perspective. We highlight some of the major differences between them and support our …

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) emphasizes drug product development by Quality by Design (QbD). Critical material attributes (CMAs) are a QbD element that has an impact on pharmaceutical operations and product quality. Pharmaceutical drugs often crystallize as needle-shaped (a CMA) particles and affect the process due to poor flowability, low bulk density, and high compressibility, and eventually the product performance. In this study, the product obtained from crystallization was needle-shaped Ciprofloxacin HCl (CIPRO), formed lumps during drying, and compacted during processing through feeders. To delump small amounts of materials and break the needles, multiple available devices (mortar-pestle, Krups …

William Augustus Bowles accompanied by William Cunningham and a band of Indians made up of Cowitas, Broken Arrows, Hitchetas, Ufales, Chichas, and Ousutches captured the Apalachee trading post of Panton, Leslie and Company on the 16th day of January 1792. This event was one of the most important incidents in the commercial warfare waged by the merchants of New Providence against the house of Panton.
