Animal Assisted Intervention And How It Can Improve Attention And Positive Emotion, Alexis D. Mcintosh
Animal Assisted Intervention And How It Can Improve Attention And Positive Emotion, Alexis D. Mcintosh
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to determine if animal-assisted intervention, known as ATT, can improve a person's attention span and assist with a better emotional state. In this study, attention is being measured by a facial recognition attention task, and emotional state is being measured by a portion of the Watson and Clark (1994) Emotional State-Adult Protocol. Animals may not have words with which to communicate; however, they can, and do, respond to emotional distress when they have been correctly trained. There have been numerous studies in which this kind of therapy has successfully helped a client to improve …
Immortality Through Mind Uploading And Resurrection, Adam M. Leis
Immortality Through Mind Uploading And Resurrection, Adam M. Leis
Masters Theses
Technology in the last century has flourished exponentially. Previous fantasies are becoming cutting-edge discoveries like global communications, encyclopedic knowledge at the average person’s fingertips, and even medical advances used to improve and extend one’s quality of life and life expectancy. As technology pushes the boundaries of what is possible, ambitious visionaries look to solve the arguably greatest problem known to humanity: death. Transhumanists aiming to use technology to overcome this great human limitation, mortality, present the newest proposed solutions to life’s oldest challenge. One of these solutions, mind uploading, is perhaps the most ambitious, but it is not without its …

Fight Navigator: Exploring The Feasibility Of A Retaliatory Violence Prevention Program To Help Youth Manage The Code Of The Street, James Barrett, William Pollack, Elizabeth Janopaul-Naylor, Marvin So, Vincenzo Teran, Elizabeth Stilwell
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Violence remains the leading cause of injury and death for people between the ages of 15 and 24 and presents a challenge for communities of color. Better understanding of the context surrounding violence is critical in order to develop effective prevention interventions. We conducted a two-phase, qualitative, feasibility study to develop and initially evaluate a retaliatory violence program, Fight Navigator. Focus groups (n=20) and semi-structured case vignette interviews (n=20) were conducted with the target population that were analyzed using a consensual qualitative research approach. Findings suggest that participants were more likely to believe that conflicts could be resolved without violence …
Improving Housing Services For Youth Survivors Of Sexual Exploitation: An Exploratory Study, Danielle B. Groton, Tomi Gomory
Improving Housing Services For Youth Survivors Of Sexual Exploitation: An Exploratory Study, Danielle B. Groton, Tomi Gomory
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Children who have been commercially sexually exploited are a vulnerable population, often in need of housing services. However, little is known about housing services for this population. To address this gap, the current study aims to further the understanding and knowledge about housing services for children who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) in the U.S. Through a structured online search and review of the research literature, we identified 56 programs thought to be serving children who have experienced CSE in the United States. Agencies were asked to complete a brief semi-structured survey on their services for youth who have …
An Investigation Into The Social Interaction And Demonstration Of Preference For Location Of Cows In A Commercial Dairy Herd., Joanne Vincent
An Investigation Into The Social Interaction And Demonstration Of Preference For Location Of Cows In A Commercial Dairy Herd., Joanne Vincent
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Under free-ranging conditions cattle live in social groups because it is beneficial to them in terms of risk of predation, breeding synchronisation and collective intelligence, amongst others. However, current dairy cattle management practice is not geared toward management of the cow for her social wellbeing but rather for the ability to feed and manage appropriately and meet the cows’ main needs that affect productivity and profitability. Domestic dairy cattle do not have free ranging opportunities. Heifers are managed in cohort groups from birth to calving and have little, if any, interaction with the adult herd until they calve. This study …
Stratifying Ischaemic Stroke Patients Across 3 Treatment Windows Using T2 Relaxation Times, Ordinal Regression And Cumulative Probabilities, Bryony Mcgarry, Elizabeth Hunter, Robin Damian, Michael Knight, Philip Clatworthy, George Harston, Keith Muir, Risto Kauppinen, John Kelleher
Stratifying Ischaemic Stroke Patients Across 3 Treatment Windows Using T2 Relaxation Times, Ordinal Regression And Cumulative Probabilities, Bryony Mcgarry, Elizabeth Hunter, Robin Damian, Michael Knight, Philip Clatworthy, George Harston, Keith Muir, Risto Kauppinen, John Kelleher
Conference papers
Unknown onset time is a common contraindication for anti-thrombolytic treatment of ischaemic stroke. T2 relaxation-based signal changes within the lesion can identify patients within or beyond the 4.5-hour intravenous thrombolysis treatment-window. However, now that intra-arterial thrombolysis is recommended between 4.5 and 6 hours from symptom onset and mechanical thrombectomy is considered safe between 6 and 24 hours, there are three treatment-windows to consider. Here we show a cumulative ordinal regression model, incorporating the T2 relaxation time, predicts the probabilities of a patient being within one of the three treatment-windows and is more accurate than signal intensity changes from T2 weighted …
Virtual Tutor Personality In Computer Assisted Language Learning, Johanna Dobbriner, Cathy Ennis, Robert J. Ross
Virtual Tutor Personality In Computer Assisted Language Learning, Johanna Dobbriner, Cathy Ennis, Robert J. Ross
Conference papers
The use of intelligent virtual agents in language learning has increased in recent years. Studies into several aspects of personalisation aiming to increase user engagement are an ongoing research topic with avatar personality being one such aspect. As a step towards our development of intelligent virtual avatars, we present two of our initial experiments to explore differences in user interaction with two contrasting avatar personalities -- P1: open-minded, friendly and sociable and P2: closed-off, curt and distant. Each user interacted with a single personality in a video-call setting and gave feedback on the interaction. Our expectations, that P1 would be …
Physiological Measurements For Real-Time Fatigue Monitoring In Train Drivers: Review Of The State Of The Art And Reframing The Problem, Bojana Bjegojevic, Maria Chiara Leva, Nora Balfe, Sam D. Cromie, Luca Longo
Conference papers
The impact of fatigue on train drivers is one of the most important safety-critical issues in rail. It affects drivers’ performance, significantly contributing to railway incidents and accidents. To address the issue of real-time fatigue detection in drivers, most reliable and applicable psychophysiological indicators of fatigue need to be identified. Hence, this paper aims to examine and present the current state of the art in physiological measures for real-time fatigue monitoring that could be applied in the train driving context. Three groups of such measures are identified: EEG, eye-tracking and heart-rate measures. This is the first paper to provide the …
Underestimation Bias And Underfitting In Machine Learning, Padraig Cunningham, Sarah Jane Delany
Underestimation Bias And Underfitting In Machine Learning, Padraig Cunningham, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
. Often, what is termed algorithmic bias in machine learning will be due to historic bias in the training data. But sometimes the bias may be introduced (or at least exacerbated) by the algorithm itself. The ways in which algorithms can actually accentuate bias has not received a lot of attention with researchers focusing directly on methods to eliminate bias - no matter the source. In this paper we report on initial research to understand the factors that contribute to bias in classification algorithms. We believe this is important because underestimation bias is inextricably tied to regularization, i.e. measures to …
Injurers Versus Victims: (A)Symmetric Reactions To Symmetric Risks, Francesco Parisi, Alice Guerra
Injurers Versus Victims: (A)Symmetric Reactions To Symmetric Risks, Francesco Parisi, Alice Guerra
Articles
Tort models assume symmetry in the behavior of injurers and victims when faced by a threat of liability and a risk of harm without compensation, respectively. This assumption has never been empirically validated. Using a novel experimental design, we study the behavior of injurers and victims when facing symmetric accident risks. Experimental results provide qualified support for the symmetric behavior hypothesis.
Early Repayment Of Loans Under Eu Law: The Lexitor Judgment, Enrico Baffi, Francesco Parisi
Early Repayment Of Loans Under Eu Law: The Lexitor Judgment, Enrico Baffi, Francesco Parisi
Articles
Recent changes in EU law provide flexibility and protection to consumers, facilitating early repayment of loans, when the consumer is no longer interested in continuing a credit relationship. From an economic point of view, early repayment of loans should be facilitated, because it allows money that is no longer needed to be put to other desirable uses. Under current EU law, as recently interpreted in the Lexitor judgment by the Court of Justice of the European Union, upon early repayment of a loan, consumers can obtain a pro-rated reimbursement of all the up-front and recurring costs of the loan, including …

Parents' Attitudes And Beliefs Towards Dietary Behaviors Of Children With Autism Aged 5-13 Years, Subashree Narayanan
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability that may affect nutritional management of children with autism. Parent’s attitudes and their behavior towards healthy eating reflects on the child’s eating habits and thus, their nutritional health. This study aimed to describe the diet quality of children with autism using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scores. It also aimed to assess the relationship between parent’s perceived barriers and self-efficacy and children’s dietary behavior and dietary intake (age 5-13 years). The relationship was assessed using 2 questionnaires, Nutrition and Health Awareness and BAMBI questionnaire for parent’s attitudes and beliefs and dietary behavior, respectively. Dietary intake …
Beyond Plea Bargaining: A Theory Of Criminal Settlement, Richard Lorren Jolly, J.J. Prescott
Beyond Plea Bargaining: A Theory Of Criminal Settlement, Richard Lorren Jolly, J.J. Prescott
Articles
Settlement is a term rarely used in criminal law. Instead, people speak almost exclusively of plea bargaining—i.e., enforceable agreements in which a defendant promises to plead guilty in exchange for a prosecutor’s promise to seek leniency in charging or at sentencing. But a traditional plea agreement is just the most visible instance of a much broader class of possible criminal settlement agreements. In terms of their fundamentals, criminal settlements are indistinguishable from their civil counterparts: through either an atomized or comprehensive bargain, parties exchange what they have for what they want, advancing their respective interests in cost minimization, risk mitigation, …
On The Influence Of Incentive Mechanisms For China’S Current Mixed Ownership Reform On Corporate Performance, Hui Yong Ren
On The Influence Of Incentive Mechanisms For China’S Current Mixed Ownership Reform On Corporate Performance, Hui Yong Ren
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Since the Central Economic Work Conference set the mixed ownership reform as where China’s state-owned enterprises (SOE) can make breakthroughs on reforms in early 2017, enterprises at all levels, from central to local state-owned, have continuously introduced new measures and new deployments involving the reform. The mixed ownership reform (hereinafter referred to as the “mixed reform”) introduces flexible market response mechanisms and innovative management systems from private enterprises into state-owned enterprises to enhance the market awareness of state-owned enterprises, to increase their own competitiveness, vitality and creativity. It aims to build a system that conforms to modern corporate governance and …

How Filipino Youth Identify And Act On Bullying And Harassment On Social Media, Cheryll Ruth Soriano, Jason Vincent A. Cabañes, Jan Michael Alexandre Bernadas, Maria Caridad H. Tarroja, Kimberly Kaye Mata
SDRC Projects
This study examined how Filipino youth identify, experience, assess, and respond to bullying and harassment on social media. It approached these phenomena as communicative and socially constructed, shaped by young people’s relationships, cultural contexts, and use of multiple interconnected digital platforms. The study drew on online in-depth interviews with 152 Filipino youth aged 15 to 24 from Metro Manila, Batangas, Negros Occidental, and Misamis Occidental, including both school-going and out-of-school youth. The findings show that social media bullying and harassment are shaped by the youth’s use of polymedia and by the interaction of three key dimensions: targets, acts, and spaces. …
Can Mind Perception Explain Virtuous Character Judgments Of Artificial Intelligence?, Daniel Burton Shank, Mallory North, Carson Arnold, Patrick Gamez
Can Mind Perception Explain Virtuous Character Judgments Of Artificial Intelligence?, Daniel Burton Shank, Mallory North, Carson Arnold, Patrick Gamez
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
People tend to attribute less of a virtuous or unvirtuous characteristic to artificial intelligence (AI) agents compared to humans after observing a behavior exemplifying that particular virtue or vice. We argue that this difference can be explained by perceptions of experiential and agentic mind. Experiential mind focuses on one's emotions, sensations, and past experiences, whereas agentic mind focuses on one's intentions, capacity for action, and behaviors. Building on person-centered morality, virtue ethics, and mind perception research, we argue that both agentic and experiential mind are possible mediators of behavior-to-character attributions. We conducted two experiments (n = 613, n = 584) …

Humans Are Perceived As Better, But Weaker, Than Artificial Intelligence: A Comparison Of Affective Impressions Of Humans, Ais, And Computer Systems In Roles On Teams, Daniel Burton Shank, Madison Bowen, Alexander Burns, Matthew Dew
Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Attributions of affective meaning – goodness, power, and activity – are important for understanding how people interact with both human and technological agents. Recent evidence indicates that labels of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer system differ in affective impressions, but it is unknown if people perceived affective differences when the AI or computer is an agent with a specific human-like role. For humans, roles (e.g., an online recruiter, a product assembling employee, a resource distributor) have stable affective meaning creating a stable social structure and predictable interaction patterns. In this paper, we examine how the 59 roles affectively differ based …

Rising Above The Stigma: Developing Young Leaders Through Peer Mentoring, Shawn Miller
Graduate Research Papers
Permanence is ideally the ultimate goal of the child welfare system, however it is unrealistic to believe that every young adult transitioning out of care will not only find a permanent home, but have had the opportunity to build the social capital needed for a successful transition in today’s society (Scannapieco, Smith, Blakeney-Strong, 2015).

Analysis Of Assessments On Secondary Students' Development And Interpretation Of Models, Alaina L. Appley
Graduate Research Papers
As districts are making the shift to three-dimensional learning the development of a coherent set of high-quality task-based assessments has been a challenge. For this research I collected and analyzed twelve of my district's assessments over the scientific skill of modeling from grades seven through 12. The analysis involved two tools developed by NGSS and Achieve.org to determine the extent to which the assessments ask students to perform tasks that are driven by phenomena and use the three-dimensional in service of sense-making, the Task Screener and the Framework to Evaluate Cognitive Complexity in Science Assessments. The findings support what …
The Influence Of Camera Perspective And Viewer Attitudes Towards Police On Perceptions Of Police-Civilian Encounters, Anna-Louise Skidmore
The Influence Of Camera Perspective And Viewer Attitudes Towards Police On Perceptions Of Police-Civilian Encounters, Anna-Louise Skidmore
Theses : Honours
Research suggests there may be a Camera Perspective Bias (CPB) effect across different camera footage types which influences viewer perceptions of police use of force encounters. Police body-worn camera (BWC) footage presents a first-person perspective from the officer’s point of view which predominantly captures the civilian. It is suggested that viewing an encounter from this perspective elicits a positive bias towards the officer when compared to CCTV footage. Additionally, research also shows that attitudes towards police influence perceptions of a filmed police-civilian encounters. This research aimed to investigate the effect of different camera evidence types (i.e., CCTV, BWC without audio …
The Challenge Of Sustainable Consumption For Governance And Policy Development—A Systematic Review, Vivienne Byers, Alan Gilmer
The Challenge Of Sustainable Consumption For Governance And Policy Development—A Systematic Review, Vivienne Byers, Alan Gilmer
Articles
The modern industry discourse on sustainability is the idea of ‘green growth’, which is described as the paradox of the continuation of increased economic growth, at the same time as increasing sustainability. Policy makers face the challenge of how to encourage and sustain appropriate levels of individual behavioural change to manage consumption in a changing environment. In addressing this challenge, this study seeks to move beyond discrete elements of human consumption behaviour and develop a better understand of the wider inputs including culture, societal norms, institutions and governance. The research methodology adopted uses a systematic literature review approach coupled with …

Responding To Stigmatization: How To Resist And Overcome The Stigma Of Unemployment, Paul Donnelly, Lucia Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia Sell-Trujillo
Articles
Organization research on stigma has mostly focused on the stigmatized, limiting the scope for exploring what is possible and lacking recognition of the structural conditions and unequal power relations that create and sustain stigma. Consequently, it overlooks how actors can organize to resist and potentially overcome stigmatization altogether. Addressing this question empirically, we studied the long-term unemployed in Spain using a longitudinal qualitative research design. We develop a typology of responses to stigmatization – getting stuck, getting by, getting out, getting back at and getting organized – that advances our understanding of stigma in several ways. First, our typology captures …

Negative or evenly paced racing strategies often lead to more favorable performance outcomes for endurance athletes. However, casual inspection of race split times and observational studies both indicate that elite triathletes competing in Olympic-distance triathlon typically implement a positive pacing strategy during the last of the 3 disciplines, the 10-km run. To address this apparent contradiction, the authors examined data from 14 International Triathlon Union elite races over 3 consecutive years involving a total of 725 male athletes. Analyses of race results confirm that triathletes typically implement a positive running pace strategy, running the first lap of the standard 4-lap …

Business As Usual: Hobby Lobby And The Purpose Of Corporate Rights, Dalia Tsuk Mitchell
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This article explores the interdependence of the discourse of corporate rights and the law of corporate purpose. I argue that the history of corporate rights reflects changing reactions of the U.S. Supreme Court to social, political, and cultural concerns, each reaction offering a different purpose for corporations in our modern society. At the turn of the twentieth century, in response to fears about the advance of socialism, the Court used liberal assumptions to justify protecting the publicly held corporation’s property rights as derived from the rights of individual shareholders. In so doing, the Court helped turn the corporation, with its …
The Influence Of Body Size On Metabolic Rates, Scaling, Telomere Dynamics, And Metamorphosis In Megachilid Bees, Courtney Corinne Grula
The Influence Of Body Size On Metabolic Rates, Scaling, Telomere Dynamics, And Metamorphosis In Megachilid Bees, Courtney Corinne Grula
Biological Sciences
Body size is related to many aspects of a bee’s life history including foraging distance and pollination efficiency. Megachile rotundata, and Osmia lignaria are agriculturally important, solitary pollinators. Adult body size in solitary bees is variable because it is determined by the quantity of food available to the developing larva. The goal of this dissertation was to determine the effect of body size on metabolic rates, scaling, telomere dynamics, and entry into metamorphosis. Body size was manipulated under laboratory conditions by manipulating the amount of food provided during the final larval stage. First, I tested the effect of body size …
