Moderated Longitudinal Associations Between Peer Rejection And Weight Concerns In Primary School Children, Emily N. Herrmann Jan 2021

Moderated Longitudinal Associations Between Peer Rejection And Weight Concerns In Primary School Children, Emily N. Herrmann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Weight concerns challenge the well-being of many children and adolescents. As many as 70% of children report body dissatisfaction (Tatangelo et al., 2016). By adolescence, weight concerns are normative (Davison et al., 2003; Field et al., 1999). Negative weight-related cognitions are troublesome because they lead to emotional and behavioral maladaptive functioning and most importantly, unhealthy weight-control behaviors (Neumark-Sztainer et al., 2006; ter Bogt et al., 2006). Rejected children are especially at risk for body dissatisfaction, however the order of effects is not clear (Mikami & Hinshaw, 2006; Rancourt & Prinstein, 2010). Regression analyses were conducted to test the hypothesis that …

Nuclear Halo Effect And Field Size Factor For Pencil-Beam Scanning Proton Therapy, Atdhe Beqiri Jan 2021

Nuclear Halo Effect And Field Size Factor For Pencil-Beam Scanning Proton Therapy, Atdhe Beqiri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In proton therapy systems with pencil-beam scanning, output of Halo effect is not necessarily included in Treatment Planning System (TPS). Halo effect (low-intensity tail) can significantly affect a patient’s dose distribution. The output of this dose depends on the field size being irradiated. Although much research has been made to investigate such relation to the field size, the number of reports on dose calculations including the halo effect is small. In this work we have investigated the Halo effect, including field size factor, target depth factor, and air gaps with a range shifter for a Varian ProBeam. Dose calculations created …

Monitoring Wading Bird Colonies Using Acoustic Sampling And Regional Shifts In Wading Bird Nest Abundances In A Pulsed Wetland System, Rachel C. Larson Jan 2021

Monitoring Wading Bird Colonies Using Acoustic Sampling And Regional Shifts In Wading Bird Nest Abundances In A Pulsed Wetland System, Rachel C. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Wetland loss and degradation have led to the development of restoration programs worldwide, many of which monitor wading bird populations as indicators of wetland quality. Therefore, efficient, standardized monitoring is integral to restoration progress. I tested the use of passive acoustic monitoring to estimate nest abundances and provisioning rates in wading bird colonies and examined regional nesting dynamics in the Florida Everglades, where a long monitoring record enables analysis of nesting patterns relative to hydrologic changes. I found that call rates can serve as indices of colony nest abundances and begging call rate and timing are indicative of provisioning events. …

The main investigation relied on a survey in Phase 1 to collect quantitative and qualitative data, followed by a multiple-case study in Phase 2 to collect qualitative data to gain deeper insights into the overall organizational context and capacity for SDL implementation at the local level. Two cases for Phase 2 were identified through analysis of …

Out Of Style: Hegemonic Constraints On Fat Man’S Selfpresentation Through Fashion, Cassio Marques Jan 2021

Out Of Style: Hegemonic Constraints On Fat Man’S Selfpresentation Through Fashion, Cassio Marques

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Fashion has functioned to produce and maintain hegemonic discourses of beauty and size by privileging thin, white, upper-classed and heteronormative standards. While fatness opposes these expectations, past research has yet to fully account for fat men who take an active role in using fashion. Neither their purpose nor their reasoning for using fashion has been extensively detailed. I ask three questions: (1) Are fat men able to manage fat stigma through their engagement with fashion? (2) How do fat men use fashion as part of their presentation of self? (3) What role does intersectionality play as these men use fashion …

On The Topic Of Aerosol Generation And Propagation, Jesse H. Schreck Jan 2021

On The Topic Of Aerosol Generation And Propagation, Jesse H. Schreck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In this research, three methods of aerosol generation, and their subsequent propagation, are investigated experimentally. These experiments provided insight into the potential risk aerosol can have pertaining to the spread of infectious disease such as COVID – 19. The first of which investigated an alternative generation route that may exist given the discovery of small numbers of viable viruses in urine and stool samples. Flushing biomatter can lead to the aerosolization of micro-organisms; thus, there is a likelihood that bioaerosols generated in public restrooms may pose a concern for the transmission of COVID-19, especially since these areas are relatively confined, …

Re-Imaginando Utopías: La Desilusión Porteña De Borges, Mitchel Baccinelli Jan 2021

Re-Imaginando Utopías: La Desilusión Porteña De Borges, Mitchel Baccinelli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Borges’s literary production, particularly between 1923 and 1955, drastically changes in its depiction of Buenos Aires. The city that Borges considered his home was the center of various political and cultural changes in Argentina during those years, and the more that Argentina changed, the deeper Borges’s disillusionment became. Examining these changes in the depiction of themes such as city, community, and history, we can better understand the process of disillusionment by which Borges begins with a utopic view of Buenos Aires that becomes dystopic before it is abandoned in order to imagine a new utopia.

Switching Learning Management Systems: Comparing Effects On Student Perception, Todd Price Jan 2021

Switching Learning Management Systems: Comparing Effects On Student Perception, Todd Price

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The computer industry does not understand how adults learn (Knowles, 1983). A profound statement made nearly 40 years ago. With the advancement of technology and the tremendous growth of online learning, the learning management system (LMS) has become the tool for delivering distance education. E-learning platforms have witnessed exponential uptake by the education and corporate sectors over the past three to five years (Wadhwani & Gankar, 2020). From this author's experience in the field of instructional design and online instruction, all LMSs are just a "database with a different user interface (Price, 2016)". But are there opposing perceptions from the …

The Assesment Of The Role Of Microsaccadic Eye Movements In Bistable Motion Perception, Darwin Romulus Jan 2021

The Assesment Of The Role Of Microsaccadic Eye Movements In Bistable Motion Perception, Darwin Romulus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Even during fixation, the eye is rarely still, as miniature eye movements continue to occur within fixational periods of the eye. These miniature movements are referred to as fixational eye movements. Microsaccades are one of the three types of fixational eye movements that have been identified. Microsaccades have been attributed to different visual processes/phenomena such as fixation stability, perceptual fading, and multistable perception. Still, debates surrounding the functional role of microsaccades in vision ensued, as many of the findings from earlier microsaccade reports contradict one another and the polarity in the field caused by these debates led many to believe …

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acarina: Ixodidae), is the most abundant tick species found in Arkansas and is involved in the trans-mission of pathogens of medical and veterinary importance. When not feeding, most non-nidicolous tick species shelter in the soil and leaf litter where they may be exposed to and potentially infected with entomopathogenic fungi that reside naturally in the soil. Entomopathogenic fungi in the genus Metarhizium Sorokīn (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) have shown promise as biological control agents of ticks. Here, the first study to isolate and identify Arkansas-derived isolates of Metarhizium from A. americanum ticks is presented. We …
