The Role Of Hardiness And Autonomy Support On College Student Engagement, Kevin Douglas Cherry Jan 2021

The Role Of Hardiness And Autonomy Support On College Student Engagement, Kevin Douglas Cherry

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The gap between college student enrollment and graduation rates remains a problem for college students and administrators. Literature on persistence in college suggests that factors such as hardiness and autonomy support may contribute to student perseverance through degree attainment. The current study focused on these constructs using a framework based on self-determination theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 1985). Factors related to student persistence, namely hardiness and autonomy support, were expected to positively predict college student engagement. Furthermore, hardiness was expected to moderate the relationship between autonomy support and college student engagement. College students from a university and a community college …

Wingate Muscular Power Test Reference Values For Active Healthy Adults Ages 19-29: Normative Data And Differences Between Sex, Levi Basist

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The Wingate Muscular Power Test (WMPT) has existed for several decades and to this day is considered the gold standard for evaluating an individual’s muscular power. However, the utility of this test is predicated on having accurate and relevant normative data with which to compare individual results. At present, the existing literature on this subject is either several decades old and/or inclusive of only specific subject groups (i.e. men only or sport-specific athletes). This study presents WMPT normative values for active healthy adults ages 19-29, separated by sex. The sample consisted of 330 active healthy volunteers (186 men and 144 …

Laboratory To Landscape: Mycorestoration, Riley Sanae Allen Jan 2021

Laboratory To Landscape: Mycorestoration, Riley Sanae Allen

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Mycorestoration is the use of saprophytic fungi to remediate pollutants from land and water. To address contaminant presence in non-point source pollution primarily from agricultural runoff, we worked towards identifying the community-scale implementation process of mycofiltration, a type of mycorestoration that filters contaminants from water, in Arcata, California. This place-based study used Participatory Action Research (PAR) to collaboratively conduct Transdisciplinary Research (TR) to collect baseline qualitative and quantitative data that did not exist for Arcata’s context. These data have been compiled into a written implementation plan which is intended to exist as a living document that is referenced and transformed …

The Politics Of Biomass Energy In California: How External Benefits Are Used To Support An Economically Marginal Sector, Dana L. Dysthe Jan 2021

The Politics Of Biomass Energy In California: How External Benefits Are Used To Support An Economically Marginal Sector, Dana L. Dysthe

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Since the 1990s, there has been a decline in biomass energy generation in California. In order to promote state governmental policies aiming to increase biomass energy generation in California, the sector has been linked to a series of external benefits that biomass energy purportedly brings. Through document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation, five distinct external benefits were identified that have been used to promote the biomass energy sector. These external benefits are: renewable energy generation, air quality improvements, promotion of forest restoration and fuel removal projects, disposal of wood waste from agricultural and forestry sectors, and rural economic development. …

Spatiotemporal Patterns In Water Yield From The Humid Puna: A Case Study In The Agrarian District Of Zurite, Perú, Wyeth Wunderlich Jan 2021

Spatiotemporal Patterns In Water Yield From The Humid Puna: A Case Study In The Agrarian District Of Zurite, Perú, Wyeth Wunderlich

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The humid puna is a seasonally dry alpine grass- and shrub-land biome that exists at the altitudinal limits of plant survival, hosts peat-forming wetlands known as bofedales, and yields water to streams used by small and large communities throughout the central and southern Peruvian Andes. Despite the importance of the humid puna in supplying water resources, particularly to perennial streams, few studies have quantified water yield and no studies have explored relationships between the structure of puna landscapes and spatial patterns in water yield. Zurite (population: 3,640, elevation: 3,011 m.a.s.l., annual precipitation: 855 mm) is an agrarian district in …

Hydraulic Assessment Of Traditional And Fish-Friendly Tide Gates In Humboldt Bay, California, Marcela Anne Jimenez Jan 2021

Hydraulic Assessment Of Traditional And Fish-Friendly Tide Gates In Humboldt Bay, California, Marcela Anne Jimenez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Tide gates are common hydraulic structures located throughout coastal and estuarine areas that prevent tidal waves from flooding previously converted tidally influenced areas. As restoration efforts increase, more “fish-friendly” tide gates that allow for larger openings and longer opening periods are being installed to improve habitat for threatened or endangered species. The purpose of this thesis was to determine discharge and head loss coefficients for traditional and side-hinged tide gates that could be inputs for hydraulic models and improve tide gate sizing and design. The study sites included Gannon Slough and US 101 Slough in Humboldt, California that represented a …

"It Kind Of Polishes All Your Flaws Away": Long-Term Experiences With Psilocybin Mushrooms And The Influence Of Set And Setting, Danielle Nicole Daniel Jan 2021

"It Kind Of Polishes All Your Flaws Away": Long-Term Experiences With Psilocybin Mushrooms And The Influence Of Set And Setting, Danielle Nicole Daniel

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study explores the experiences and motivations of people who take psilocybin mushrooms long-term. Little scholarly attention has been given to the psilocybin experience outside of a clinical setting. Likewise, there is a dearth of research examining the factors that lead to first-time and ongoing experiences with mushrooms. I conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 18 informants who have taken psilocybin mushrooms at least 10 times and for over three years. I encouraged open dialog and storytelling to gain a deeper understanding of their mushroom experiences and motivations to take long-term. Using a grounded theory approach, I identified the following patterns …

Do Aces Moderate Expressive Writing Outcomes? Examining The Relationship Between Exposure To Adverse Childhood Experiences And Expressive Writing Outcomes, Nick Vasquez Jan 2021

Do Aces Moderate Expressive Writing Outcomes? Examining The Relationship Between Exposure To Adverse Childhood Experiences And Expressive Writing Outcomes, Nick Vasquez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Repeated exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increases risks for various physical and mental health problems during adulthood. While research and policy decisions have focused primarily on early interventions and preventions, less research to date has looked at treatment options for adults with high exposure to ACEs. Cognitive behavioral therapies are viewed as an effective alternative; however, the high costs of therapy and limited efficacy for physical health problems warrant research into alternatives. Expressive writing is a well studied alternative to traditional talk-based therapies with limited demographic moderators. However, no research to date has looked at the role of ACEs …

Hózhó, “To Walk In Beauty And Balance”: Indigenous Writers Decolonize Theories Of Myth, Aaron Laughlin Jan 2021

Hózhó, “To Walk In Beauty And Balance”: Indigenous Writers Decolonize Theories Of Myth, Aaron Laughlin

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In this project, I argue for an Indigenous theory of myth in order to reconsider popular and academic paradigms about myth and its function. My goal is to articulate how Indigenous understandings might revise these paradigms by emphasizing myth as a means to foster ethical relationships of health and balance within ourselves and in the world. Inspired by the Indigenous writers Leslie Marmon Silko, Thomas King, and Gerald Vizenor, I outline how these authors think, write, and talk about the concept of myth. I explain prevailing academic paradigms, including the term’s long history of associations with old-fashioned, “primitive,” superstitious stories …

Caution Fatigue: Group Identification And Disgust Provide Protection In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Logan F. Ashworth Jan 2021

Caution Fatigue: Group Identification And Disgust Provide Protection In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Logan F. Ashworth

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The current Coronavirus pandemic has yielded an abundance of concerns regarding the psychological effects of isolating a highly social species through widespread lockdowns and enhanced social distancing. Research show that many are suffering from mental health crises, while also refusing to isolate (Brooks et al., 2020; Czeiler, et al., 2020). These behaviors combine to increase risk of viral infection. An emerging term to explain this paradox is “Caution Fatigue”. Yet, there is no research that outlines its specific underlying mechanisms. The goal of this paper is to propose a series of models that delineate caution fatigue through the effects a) …

Assessing California Commercial Fishing Community Well-Being In The Context Of Marine Protected Area (Mpa) Formation, Samantha Cook

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Marine protected areas (MPAs)—defined geographic areas where fishing and harvesting activity is limited or restricted—have emerged as a popular marine biodiversity and climate resilience strategy worldwide. MPA monitoring efforts often follow MPA designation to help inform the adaptive management of MPAs and MPA networks. In 2012, California completed the largest statewide system of MPAs to date, consisting of 124 MPAs covering 16% of state waters. Following MPA implementation, the state initiated a long-term monitoring program (2019-2022) to help inform the 10-year MPA management review. This two-chapter thesis presents findings from a state-funded project to conduct long-term socioeconomic monitoring for human …

Transforming Agriculture In The Pilbara: Interpretation Of Airborne Electromagnetic (Aem) Data, Aaron C. Davis, Mike Donn, John A. Simons, Christopher Schelfhout Dr, Olga Barron

Natural resources commissioned reports

This report focusses on hydrogeophysical and geological interpretation of the inversion results of an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey conducted north of Newman, Western Australia, in October and November 2019. The interpretation of the inversions is regional in scale, although we pay specific attention to interpretation of the near-surface transported cover sequences north and west of the Fortescue River. Specifically, we attempt to locate aquifers and near-surface geological structures that are likely to provide good quality groundwater for future extraction and storage. Analysis of the electrical conductivity structure of the ground also provides an estimate of the depth of the groundwater …

Post-Quantum Cryptography: An Implementation Of The Linear Equivalence Signature Scheme, Deanna Easton Jan 2021

Post-Quantum Cryptography: An Implementation Of The Linear Equivalence Signature Scheme, Deanna Easton

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

As quantum computers gradually become a part of our reality, standard security systems will be at risk and new post-quantum security systems are needed. One such system, the Linear Equivalence Signature Scheme (LESS), promises to offer a solution. Since it is a scheme that relies on the hardness of linear equivalence for codes, it has the potential to be secure against classical and possible quantum attacks. In this paper several programs as possible implementations of LESS have been written. We will describe LESS and present the codes that go along with it.

Florida Bonneted Bat (Eumops Floridanus): Feeding Activity And Bright Stadium Lights, Selena Harman Jan 2021

Florida Bonneted Bat (Eumops Floridanus): Feeding Activity And Bright Stadium Lights, Selena Harman

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

The Florida bonneted bat (Eumops floridanus) is an endangered species found only in southern Florida. There is little ecological information known for this species, making conservation work difficult in protecting it. What we do know, however, is that they are large, insectivorous, high-flying mammals that can travel over vast distances in a single night. With these characteristics it made me wonder if E. floridanus would find baseball stadiums an acceptable hunting ground. They have wide-open spaces, the bright stadium lights attract insects, and the field lights themselves are hundreds of feet high. To test if this is true, I set …

Artificial Intelligence And Robotics In The Healthcare Industry, Isabella Lago Jan 2021

Artificial Intelligence And Robotics In The Healthcare Industry, Isabella Lago

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Artificial intelligence and robotics are still relatively new and being introduced, although they have been making headway into the healthcare industry. Over time, there have been many improvements, constant updates, and changes to better the technology. There are many different ways this technology has been introduced and implemented into the industry. These innovations are not within one country, but throughout the world. A large concern with this level of technology is that humans will not be needed. However, caregivers are important in providing a connection with patients as well as running the technology. Patients and caregivers differ in their views …

Dietary Analysis Of Malaclemys Terrapin Tequesta, James Porter

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) the world’s only exclusively estuarine turtle are listed as threatened and endangered through much of their range from Massachusetts to the east coast of Texas. Malaclemys terrapin is divided into seven subspecies based on geographic location and variations in physical appearance. For my research, I examined the diet of the Florida East Coast Diamondback Terrapins, M. terrapin tequesta, in the Indian River Lagoon near Vero Beach, Florida. I analyzed 13 terrapin fecal samples. Of these, all but one contained the remains of decapod crustaceans, the most common of which was the mangrove tree crab, Aratus pisonii, …

Therapeutic Uses Of Cannabidiol (Cbd), Georgia Thomas Jan 2021

Therapeutic Uses Of Cannabidiol (Cbd), Georgia Thomas

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Cannabidiol (CBD) and its related derivatives are chemicals produced by Cannabis sativa plants (hemp and marijuana). One form of CBD has been approved in the U.S. for use as a drug to treat some types of epilepsy syndromes that often do not respond to other antiseizure medicines. In recent years, many different forms of CBD have been promoted as treatments for a wide variety of other health problems, but evidence for their effectiveness is limited. For my thesis, I examine what forms of CBD are currently being sold, how are they are administered, in what dosages, and for what purpose. …

Ethical Issues Concerning “Savior Offspring.”, Jemima Dorcin Jan 2021

Ethical Issues Concerning “Savior Offspring.”, Jemima Dorcin

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Tissue transplantation is a procedure used to treat a wide range of medical disorders. Suitable tissue for transplant, however, is often in short supply. Thus, some people conceive offspring for the sole purpose of harvesting compatible tissue, e.g., for transplantation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells in a sibling or parent. A 2004 survey found that most Americans approve of using genetic testing of in vitro fertilized embryos to allow for the selective implantation of an embryo with compatible tissue for use in a sick older sibling. However, while using stem cells from the umbilicus of a newborn for medical treatments …

The Vexed Application Of The Social Contract Theory On Black People, Aaron Chichester Jan 2021

The Vexed Application Of The Social Contract Theory On Black People, Aaron Chichester

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

The Social Contract details the liberties of members in society; those willing and able to consent to the contract were afforded the luxuries of protection and assistance through the government. I draw on the theory of Charles Mills in The Racial Contract, which argues that the black life was never intended to fit into the Social Contract. During the early stages of it’s inception, black people weren’t regarded as valid members who enter the contract. Disagreement about the validity of frustration felt by the Black community as a result of this exclusion has created a social and political divide. I …

This thesis has two components: a practical part and a written part. The practical part is a 2D side-scrolling game titled Elisabeth Scrivener and the Great Library. It is an adaptation of the bestselling novel Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. Like the novel, the game is set in the Great Library of Summershall. This is a place where magical grimoires of varying strength and benevolence or alignance are managed and contained. The player character is Elisabeth, an apprentice librarian and the player follows her as she progresses through the library taking advice from benevolent grimoires and defeating and containing …

Polystyrene: Light In Weight, Heavy With Environmental Implications, Briana Frey Jan 2021

Polystyrene: Light In Weight, Heavy With Environmental Implications, Briana Frey

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

This past year has seen an exponential increase in the amount of polystyrene foam products utilized for convenience purposes. Home food delivery services, takeout, and packaging from the surplus of online shopping are major contributors to the overall presence of polystyrene foam products polluting the environment. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), is made from petroleum, like most common plastics. However, polystyrene (PS) foam comprises over 90% air which makes it difficult to recycle due to its lightweight and bulky nature. The polystyrene foam is therefore discarded with trash or littered in the environment. The foam products become lost in the environment and …

This ray-finned fish has a silvery elongate compressiform body with magenta coloring along its dorsal side. My thesis examines three juvenile specimens of Parazen pacificus to provide the first description and illustration of the juvenile stage of this species.

Recent Advances And The Ethical Implications Of Anti-Aging Research, Christine Phelan Jan 2021

Recent Advances And The Ethical Implications Of Anti-Aging Research, Christine Phelan

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Throughout recorded history there have been accounts of trying to slow and reverse the natural aging process. From the quest for the Fountain of Youth, to the discovery of telomeric degradation, aging has been a hot research topic for centuries. Due to an aging population, anti-aging research has become a magnet for geneticists and researchers. There is great hope in the strive towards anti-aging therapies, and a variation of methods have been developed that have experimentally slowed aging. Yet the biggest hurdle for anti-aging researchers is to try and balance improving lifespan without compromising, or even ignoring, healthspan. Quality of …

The Response Of Halodule Wrightii And Halophila Johnsonii To Acute And Chronic Glyphosate Stress, Owen Silvera Jan 2021

The Response Of Halodule Wrightii And Halophila Johnsonii To Acute And Chronic Glyphosate Stress, Owen Silvera

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Seagrasses are essential habitats for many species and provide critical ecosystem functions. Globally seagrasses are declining at an alarming rate. Locally, seagrass loss is concerning because of the magnitude of habitat loss as well as the uncertainty surrounding the mechanisms driving seagrass decline. We exposed two prevalent seagrasses in the IRL to the terrestrial herbicide Roundup QuikPROTM (active ingredient 73% glyphosate) and quantified seagrass response over 53 days in a closed tank system. Direct application of 112 mg glyphosate (15mL of 7.5 g/L) onto Halodule wrightii and Halophila johnsonii, simulating overspray during low tide, yielded persistent concentrations of 2.58 mg/L …

Identification Of Notes And Structures In Music Through Fourier Transforms, Andy Romero Jan 2021

Identification Of Notes And Structures In Music Through Fourier Transforms, Andy Romero

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Can we use the mathematical rules that govern waves to characterize notes and chords from a sound sample? For this project I designed a python program that uses Fourier transforms, a mathematical technique to extract the frequencies that make up a sound wave, to do just that. I will describe the method and explain how this can be used to identify musical structures in a piece of music.

Batman Can Be Anybody: Self-Transcendence And Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy, Alec Borislow

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight Trilogy examines the origin and evolution of Bruce Wayne, and his hero vigilante alter ego, Batman. The trilogy consists of Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Bruce's post-traumatic journey for physical and mental excellence results in transformative and personal discovery, leading to self-transcendence. The personality trait of self-transcendence is the apex of psychologist Abraham Maslow's lesser-known and amended hierarchy of needs. It is the highest level of human consciousness and development. Bruce's unwavering morality, intrinsic motivation, and spirituality are characteristic of both humanistic and …

Unequal Justice In Applying The United States Death Penalty, Camilla Andrade Jan 2021

Unequal Justice In Applying The United States Death Penalty, Camilla Andrade

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Several studies reveal a connection between a victim’s skin color and the probability that their aggressor will receive the death penalty. Other studies conclude that a defendant’s race will be a factor in determining whether or not they are sentenced to capital punishment. Despite the evident racial discrimination that plagues capital cases, Ernest van den Haag contends that “unequal justice is still justice” and that if someone is guilty of a capital offense, they don’t deserve any less punishment simply because the death penalty is applied disproportionately based on race. I argue, against van den Haag, that unequal justice violates …
