School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ability of plant species to adjust key functional traits through intraspecific variation may determine their success in persisting on our planet in the future, especially in unstable habitats, such as the Amazonia–Cerrado transition zone. We assessed intraspecific variation in 12 leaf morphological and anatomical traits for four tree species along a savanna–forest gradient, including rocky cerrado, typical cerrado and woodland savanna. Generally, all evaluated species showed great intraspecific variation. Our findings demonstrate that trees occurring in the woodland savanna are potentially more vulnerable to climate change, while in the cerrado the individuals presented higher tolerance to water deficit and …

Assessment Of Engineering Methodologies For Increasing Cubesat Mission Success Rates, Abdulaziz Alanazi Jan 2021

Assessment Of Engineering Methodologies For Increasing Cubesat Mission Success Rates, Abdulaziz Alanazi

Computer Science

In the last twenty years, CubeSat Systems have gained popularity in educational institutions and commercial industries. CubeSats have attracted educators and manufacturers due to their ability to be quickly produced and their low cost, and small sizes and masses. However, while developers can swiftly design and build their CubeSats, with a team of students from different disciplines using COTS parts, this does not guarantee that the CubeSat mission will be successful. Statistics show that mission failure is frequent. For example, out of 270 “university-class” CubeSats, 139 failed in their mission between 2002 and 2016 [1]. Statistics also show that the …

A New Structural Feature For Lysine Post-Translation Modification Prediction Using Machine Learning, Yuan Liu Jan 2021

A New Structural Feature For Lysine Post-Translation Modification Prediction Using Machine Learning, Yuan Liu

Computer Science

Lysine post-translational modification (PTM) plays a vital role in modulating multiple biological processes and functions. Lab-based lysine PTM identification is laborious and time-consuming, which impede large-scale screening. Many computational tools have been proposed to facilitate PTM identification in silico using sequence-based protein features. Protein structure is another crucial aspect of protein that should not be neglected. To our best knowledge, there is no structural feature dedicated to PTM identification. We proposed a novel spatial feature that captures rich structure information in a succinct form. The dimension of this feature is much lower than that of other sequence and structural features …

A Comparison Of The Quality Of Image Acquisition Between Two Different Sidestream Dark Field Video-Microscopes, Jonny Coppel, Vassiliki Bountziouka, Daniel Martin, Edward Gilbert-Kawai

Peninsula Medical School

AbstractSidestream dark field (SDF) imaging enables direct visualisation of the microvasculature from which quantification of key variables is possible. The new MicroScan USB3 (MS-U) video-microscope is a hand-held SDF device that has undergone significant technical upgrades from its predecessor, the MicroScan Analogue (MS-A). The MS-U claims superior quality of sublingual microcirculatory image acquisition over the MS-A, however, this has yet to be robustly confirmed. In this manuscript, we therefore compare the quality of image acquisition between these two devices. The microcirculation of healthy volunteers was visualised to generate thirty video images for each device. Two independent raters, blinded to the …

School of Health Professions

Abstract Background Diabetes related foot complications are increasing in complexity, frequency and cost. The application of self-management strategies can reduce the risk of individuals developing foot complications. The type, range and nature of the literature focusing on interventions that support patients with diabetic foot self-management is unknown. This scoping review aimed to i) identify self-management actions and risky behaviour avoidance strategies within interventions, ii) map the theoretical functions through which these behaviour change interventions have an effect, iii) display gaps in the research. Methodology Arksey and Malley’s (2003) 5 stage framework was followed to conduct the scoping study. This methodological …

New Algorithm For Optimised Fitting Of Dic Data To Crack Tip Plastic Zone Using The Cjp Model, B Yang, Z Wei, Fa Díaz, Z Liao, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The work presented in this paper provides guidance in optimally determining the appropriate fitting region used in digital image correlation (DIC) when fitting a crack tip field model to DIC data. In this work, the technique is applied to the CJP crack tip field model and uses the Levenberg-Marguardt (L-M) iterative method to solve for the crack tip position. This is combined with an error analysis of the main term of the Williams series expansion for crack tip stresses and the extrapolation of Saint-Venant’s principle to determine the optimum fitting region for use in DIC fit with the multi-parameter solution …

Limitations Of Small-Scale Yielding For Fatigue Crack Growth, B Marques, Mf Borges, Fv Antunes, Jm Vasco-Olmo, Fa Díaz, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The work described here has led to a simple criterion that defines the boundary of the small-scale yielding, SSY, regime to avoid invalid use of the LEFM parameter, ΔK, as the characterising parameter for fatigue crack growth rate. The approach proposed is based on the analysis of crack tip opening displacement, CTOD, and its separation into elastic and plastic components. SSY conditions are shown to dominate when the elastic component of CTOD is >75% of the total CTOD measured at a distance of 8 μm (the finite element mesh size) behind the crack tip, i.e., Δδe/Δδt > 75%. Large-scale yielding, LSY, …

Centennial High: A School For Hope And Growth, Augustina Teuber

Architecture Theses

In this paper, high school design is evaluated in order to better support the mental health of its occupants. The alarming rise in anxiety, depression, and violence among youth over the past few decades demonstrates the importance of changing society’s current trajectory. Thus this paper aims to clarify the extent design impacts users and how educational buildings can benefit adolescent mental health. Literature analysis from a diverse range of fields guides these conclusions. Additionally, case study analysis and logical argumentation are employed to identify practical solutions. Ultimately, an example design for a mental health conscious public school is purposed.

Connecting Us, Taylor Ford

Architecture Theses

Imagine experiencing multiple different cities and cultures within a single day. In Europe, this is easily accessible, partly because of the close proximity and small scale of countries, but also because of their means of travel. The ease and speed of their train system make traveling between countries almost effortless, so what has prevented the United States from doing so as well? The distance, as the crow flies, from London to Paris is about 212 miles, similar to Fargo to Minneapolis at 207 miles. However, the drive from Fargo approaches four hours, whereas a train ride from London barely breaks …

This paper investigates the effect of varying solid alkali activators on the fresh and hardened properties and microstructural changes of one-part geopolymers (OPGs). Single and binary solid alkali activators were used to activate high calcium fly ash. The alkali activators were either solely sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3) or a combination of sodium aluminate (NaAlO2) and sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3). The OPG activated with anhydrous Na2SiO3 achieved an excellent 28-day compressive strength of 83.6 MPa while OPG activated with NaAlO2 and Na2SiO3 attained a compressive strength of 45.1 MPa. The Na2SiO3-activated OPG demonstrated better fluidity than the OPG activated with NaAlO2 and Na2SiO3 …

Mild Cognitive Impairment: The Manchester Consensus, Ra Dunne, D Aarsland, Jt O’Brien, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Given considerable variation in diagnostic and therapeutic practice, there is a need for national guidance on the use of neuroimaging, fluid biomarkers, cognitive testing, follow-up and diagnostic terminology in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MCI is a heterogenous clinical syndrome reflecting a change in cognitive function and deficits on neuropsychological testing but relatively intact activities of daily living. MCI is a risk state for further cognitive and functional decline with 5–15% of people developing dementia per year. However, ~50% remain stable at 5 years and in a minority, symptoms resolve over time. There is considerable debate about whether MCI is a …

Living Streets Within Downtown Fargo: A Living Street That Focuses On The Pedestrian, Environmental, And Social Design Elements In Downtown Cores, Matthew Keller

Landscape Architecture Theses

With downtown Fargo continuing to change with new multi-use buildings and parking garages, the focus should now be on the streets. Over the past couple years there has been multiple parking garages built within a mile of downtown Broadway. The question then came to me, was the street parking necessary and what could the street scape look like if the parking were removed. This thesis is to create a potential model for a living street scape in dense downtown city bodies. The design focuses on pedestrian, social, environment aspects of the street. These design aspects will provide opportunities for the …
