Where Next For The Design, Delivery, And Evaluation Of Community-Based Physical Activity Prescription? Emerging Lessons From The United Kingdom, E. J. Oliver, B. Buckley, C. J. Dodd-Reynolds, J. Downey, C. Hanson, H. Henderson, J. Hawkins, J. Steele, M. Wade, P. M. Watson

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Despite widespread use, community-based physical activity prescription is controversial. Data limitations have resulted in a lack of clarity about what works, under what circumstances, and for whom, reflected in conservative policy recommendations. In this commentary we challenge a predominantly negative discourse, using contemporary research to highlight promising findings and “lessons learnt” for design, delivery, and evaluation. In doing so, we argue for the importance of a more nuanced approach to future commissioning and evaluation. Novelty: Amalgamating learning from multiple research teams to create recommendations for advancing physical activity prescription.

Down To Earth, Ethan Mccullough Jan 2021

Down To Earth, Ethan Mccullough

Architecture Theses

My thesis project dives into the question, “Can subterranean architecture create a more sustainable design?” The idea is to submerge the architecture into the landscape for the purpose of creating designs that can be more sustainable than the typical green design. The best way to answer this question with the chosen site is to design a multi-family housing multi-use facility. An apartment complex with additional purposes could support the community to achieve a healthier relationship between landscape and urban spaces. The research methods that will be used to answer this question will consist of an emphasis on case studies to …

The Reversible Edge: Traces Of Alterity At The Site Of Loss, Hart Island, New York, Musab Ataelmanan Jan 2021

The Reversible Edge: Traces Of Alterity At The Site Of Loss, Hart Island, New York, Musab Ataelmanan

Architecture Theses

“We cannot overlook the way in which the Industrial Revolution and its technological consequences have transformed the experience of death in people’s lives.” As discussed by the German Philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer, we stand at a point where the relevance of death in our lives has increasingly been excluded from the public realm, as cemeteries and monuments have been displaced from the centers of our cities. This “underrepresentation of death” has had a tremendous effect on the cathartic articulation of the public ritual and the deep human need to reconcile the ephemeral boundaries of life and death. Drawing upon the surrealistic …

Marijuana Legalization Effect On Opioid Abuse: A Synthetic Control Approach, Elisha Kwaku Denkyirah Jan 2021

Marijuana Legalization Effect On Opioid Abuse: A Synthetic Control Approach, Elisha Kwaku Denkyirah

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The opioid epidemic constitutes one of the worst drug crises in the history of U.S. State-level policies, in general, have done little to prevent prescription opioid abuse. A noteworthy exception to other clinical efforts to curb opioid abuse is marijuana. Despite preliminary evidence, many states are hesitant to introduce legislation to expand access to medicinal marijuana or liberalize laws on the recreational use of marijuana, fearing additional research is needed. Utilizing a synthetic control method and annual state-level data from 2006 to 2018, this study examines the effect of recreational marijuana legalization on opioid abuse. The findings strongly indicate marijuana …

Ex-Ante Temporal Optimization In Soybean Origination: An Overdetermined Approach Through Deep Learning, Noah Joseph Carlson Jan 2021

Ex-Ante Temporal Optimization In Soybean Origination: An Overdetermined Approach Through Deep Learning, Noah Joseph Carlson

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Digitization is influencing commodity trading and agricultural markets and as they transition towards extreme liquidity, agribusiness risk exposures increase, and traditional competitive advantages diminish. In commodity origination, logistics and destination basis comprise the most volatile and determinant influences of margin. To capture a consistently higher margin and represent narrowed interior basis, agribusiness firms must manage these risks by optimizing transformations. To accomplish this, ex-ante decision-making is often necessary as forward price clairvoyance is not always prevalent, is risky, or contains premium. Modeling this spatial equilibrium is difficult through traditional reductionist and essentialist application as the overdetermined and convoluted system presents …

Process Development For Effective, Recoverable And Reusable Magnetic Nanobiocatalysts For Biomass Hydrolysis, Ademola Monsur Hammed Jan 2021

Process Development For Effective, Recoverable And Reusable Magnetic Nanobiocatalysts For Biomass Hydrolysis, Ademola Monsur Hammed

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

Recovery and reuse of enzymes can reduce the high enzyme costs that are challenging for cellulosic biorefineries. Attaching enzymes to magnetic nanoparticles to make magnetic nanobiocatalysts (MNBCs) can facilitate enzyme recovery and reuse. One approach for MNBC synthesis is by attaching enzymes to flexible polymer molecules to form polymer-enzyme conjugates (PECs) which in turn can be attached to superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). However, this approach can be complex and unscalable. The research objective is to develop a scalable process to produce effective, recoverable and reusable cellulolytic MNBCs. PECs were produced and tested before incorporation into MNBCs in order to test …

Using Uas Images To Remotely Estimate Soil Moisture Content In The Red River Valley, Talon Clancy Mack Jan 2021

Using Uas Images To Remotely Estimate Soil Moisture Content In The Red River Valley, Talon Clancy Mack

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

Accurate measurements of soil moisture in a timely manner are necessary in making critical management decisions, but it is often very difficult to obtain. Even though soil moisture can be measured on the ground using various methods, or estimated via satellite imagery, soil moisture conditions at a field scale can be more beneficial. Since Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) technology has become an effective tool in many different ways for producers and researchers, the spatial and temporal gaps between the ground and the satellite approaches can be fulfilled with the use of UAS. In this study, multi-spectral images were collected over …

Lakeshore Design Intervention, Jacob Miller Jan 2021

Lakeshore Design Intervention, Jacob Miller

Landscape Architecture Theses

This study will quantify the Minnesota County's concerns with shoreline development and private landowner's concerns with the unauthorized use of purchased land due to regulations and wildlife preservation. This study aims to determine what will satisfy the needs of private interests versus the public good in relation to the common Minnesotan lakeside real-estate development problems. This study will investigate the county's concerns with shoreline development on wetlands and bluffs. The reason this study is being conducted is since landowners who want to develop their shoreline cannot do so since the state or county has all the jurisdiction in what they …

The Effect Of Climate Change On The Predatory Success Of Sharks, Melina Kuerschner Jan 2021

The Effect Of Climate Change On The Predatory Success Of Sharks, Melina Kuerschner

Natural Resources Management

This literature overview focuses on how shark species, are faring with the anthropogenically induced climatic changes. The ocean is drastically affected by this, which has major implications on the aquatic life. Some effects include increasing temperature, carbon dioxide and acidity levels. This has led to shifts in the predatory success in sharks, which will only increase in severity as climate change intensifies, because changes in climate induce other changes in most aspects of the shark’s life. These can be grouped into three categories: shifts in body functions, behaviors and habitat. Some changes in body function include difficulty integrating sensory cues …

Nitrogen Uptake Effects On Potato Yield And Quality, Enise Ayyildiz

Plant Sciences

Nitrogen (N) is one of the vital elements for potato production. As well as common synthetic fertilizers, turkey manure compost (TMC) is more commonly used as a source of N for potato production in Minnesota. The aim of this study was to compare traditional N sources and applications (urea broadcast, Environmentally Smart Nitrogen (ESN) broadcast, and ESN banded at hilling) to TMC broadcast prior to planting on yield and quality of Russet Burbank in Minnesota. The TMC treatment resulted in a similar marketable yield compared to the urea and ESN treatments. The TMC also increased the percentage of the >170 …

What’S The Church’S Official Position On Official Positions?: Grappling With “Truth” And “Authority”, Trevan Hatch Jan 2021

What’S The Church’S Official Position On Official Positions?: Grappling With “Truth” And “Authority”, Trevan Hatch

Faculty Publications

In the previous essay, Dr. Rabbi Peter Haas considered how some of our Jewish friends have approached the issue of authority in their search for truth. During my engagement with such approaches as a student at Baltimore Hebrew University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago, I have wondered how this approach might inform my own quest for truth within the context of my faith tradition. As a Latter-day Saint, what authorities should I consult? Where do I turn for truth? How can I know whether a certain claim is an “official position” of …

Teaching Italian Romanticism Through Philately And Choral Works, Ilona Klein Jan 2021

Teaching Italian Romanticism Through Philately And Choral Works, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Philately and choral works can be excellent integrative pedagogical tools when teaching Italian Romanticism at the undergraduate level. In the classroom, postage stamps provide an historical narrative for students and can help clarify the political, artistic and cultural mood of the time. The intrinsic symbolism of stamps represents the way a nation wants to be seen by the rest of the world. Instrumental and choral music, in their infinite combination of tones, combine sound with sung words, creating an artistic subtext that reveals the complexity and variety of human aesthetic expression. For the current generation of students accustomed to visual …

Exploring The Effects Of Interleaving On Mind-Wandering, Alyssa Lynn Miller Jan 2021

Exploring The Effects Of Interleaving On Mind-Wandering, Alyssa Lynn Miller

Psychology

Research has shown that interleaving (a study technique where two topics are practiced in an alternating fashion) enhances learning and memory. However, it is unclear whether interleaving impacts the frequency of mind-wandering. The current research explores the extent to which interleaving reduces mind-wandering using a between-subjects design. Participants completed the experiment remotely and learned 40 bird images from 8 distinct families. Bird images were presented in pairs from two different families (e.g., interleaved) or individually from one family (e.g., blocked). After a brief distractor task, participants completed a final classification test. Participants also completed a post-assessment questionnaire regarding the level …

Investigating The Effects Of Alternative Reclamation Practices On Recently Reclaimed Grasslands, Maureen Puffer Jan 2021

Investigating The Effects Of Alternative Reclamation Practices On Recently Reclaimed Grasslands, Maureen Puffer

Range Science

Surface mining operations in the Northern Plains result in complex grassland ecosystems being dismantled and later systematically reclaimed. Such processes can create long-term challenges with regards to the ecological recovery of reclaimed grasslands, prompting the need to find alternative reclamation practices that improve plant community dynamics and soil properties. We assessed both plant community characteristics (i.e., species richness, diversity, abundance, and community composition) and soil properties (i.e., penetration resistance and volumetric soil moisture) of reclaimed grasslands with alternative reclamation practices. Early findings showed that certain alternative reclamation practices may aid in the initial recovery of reclaimed grasslands by supporting desirable …

Restoring Heterogeneity-Based Management To Rangelands For The Benefit Of Grassland Birds And Floral Resources, Cameron Albert Duquette Jan 2021

Restoring Heterogeneity-Based Management To Rangelands For The Benefit Of Grassland Birds And Floral Resources, Cameron Albert Duquette

Range Science

Worldwide grassland loss necessitates careful consideration of management practices occurring on those grasslands that remain. Concerns with overgrazing in the early twentieth century led to overcorrection via uniform, moderate stocking. While these practices reversed some forms of rangeland degradation, they also suppressed variability in vegetation structure that is characteristic of native systems. Reduced heterogeneity resulted in biodiversity declines across many trophic levels. In an effort to restore heterogeneity, we reinstated the historic processes of fire and ungulate grazing. We studied the impacts to grassland birds and floral resources, as the Northern Plains are valuable landscapes for breeding grassland birds and …

The Use Of Land Management Practices To Reclaim Brine-Affected Cropland Soils And Restore Shrub Invaded Rangeland, Dylan John Bartels Jan 2021

The Use Of Land Management Practices To Reclaim Brine-Affected Cropland Soils And Restore Shrub Invaded Rangeland, Dylan John Bartels

Range Science

Land management techniques can enhance altered ecosystems on a variety of landscapes. In the Williston Basin of North Dakota, brine ponds created 50 years ago still cause problems today. We applied six treatments to reclaim the A-horizon of brine-affected soil on six legacy brine ponds and monitored soil nutrients until 23 months after treatment. We found that from 0-15 cm, all treatments were significantly better at reducing electrical conductivity than the control. In addition, sodium adsorption ratio was reduced at all depths over time. In Southcentral North Dakota, we monitored the effects of fire and grazing on colonies of western …

Application Of Pyric-Herbivory In The Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie To Enhance Biodiversity, Michael Charles Hamel Jan 2021

Application Of Pyric-Herbivory In The Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie To Enhance Biodiversity, Michael Charles Hamel

Range Science

Pyric-herbivory is a naturally occurring disturbance that historically created shifting mosaics of heterogeneous plant communities and vegetation structure, supporting a biodiverse Great Plains ecosystem. Present land management has decoupled this interactive disturbance leading to homogenous grasslands, resulting in a reduction of biodiversity, which is exasperated by the dominance of non-native grasses. We believe reintroducing this disturbance will increase heterogeneity and enhance biodiversity. First, we compared the effects of a season-long grazing and two patch-burn grazing systems on plant communities. Second, we evaluated how small mammal communities were affected by each grazing system. Our findings show re-establishing pyric-herbivory, via patch-burn grazing, …

Pollinator Response To Annual Forb Plantings And Self-Pollinating Dry Bean Crops In Agroecosystems, Savannah Shay Adams Jan 2021

Pollinator Response To Annual Forb Plantings And Self-Pollinating Dry Bean Crops In Agroecosystems, Savannah Shay Adams

Range Science

Intensive agricultural systems have had several ecological effects on the surrounding ecosystem, including contributing to widespread pollinator declines. In order to help supplement bee communities and potentially improve crop production, we set out to study annual forb plantings adjacent to dry bean crops to determine the pollinator response to both plantings and any potential effects on dry bean yield. We found that annual forb plantings provided continual floral resources throughout the sampling period, which can support bees and their pollination services in agroecosystems. We also found cross-pollination had no effect on dry bean yield in Carrington and a negative effect …

Development Of Nano-Architecture Systems For High-Efficiency Tumor-Targeted Drug Delivery, Babak Mamnoon Jan 2021

Development Of Nano-Architecture Systems For High-Efficiency Tumor-Targeted Drug Delivery, Babak Mamnoon

Pharmacy

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy and the second leading cause of death among women in the United States. The commonly used breast cancer treatment strategies include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormonal therapy. Since chemotherapeutic agents do not adequately differentiate between normal and cancerous cells, systemic toxicity and adverse effects associated with these anticancer drugs limit their therapeutic efficacy. In addition, uncontrolled cell proliferation and insufficient blood supply produce low oxygen partial pressure or hypoxia in almost all solid tumors. Hypoxia increases cancer cell survival through aggressiveness, metastasis, and resistance to chemotherapy, leading to poor clinical outcomes. Targeted drug …

Fighting Tigers With A Stick: An Evaluation Of U.S. Army Recruitment, Training, And Their Combat Outcomes In The Korean War, Jonathan Banks Jan 2021

Fighting Tigers With A Stick: An Evaluation Of U.S. Army Recruitment, Training, And Their Combat Outcomes In The Korean War, Jonathan Banks

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

After the Korean War, most people regarded the performance of the U.S Army in that conflict as largely checkered. It had not once, but twice retreated disgracefully, losing to theoretically inferior third world armies. Its soldiers often performed poorly, not just in battle, but also prison camps. Many scholars, military commentators, and journalists have since tried to dissect the failures of the U.S. Army in Korea. Some have examined whether or not American GIs received proper combat training before and during the war. Indeed, problems existed with American infantry training before and during the early phases of the Korean War. …

Centennial High: A School For Hope And Growth, Augustina Teuber

Architecture Theses

In this paper, high school design is evaluated in order to better support the mental health of its occupants. The alarming rise in anxiety, depression, and violence among youth over the past few decades demonstrates the importance of changing society’s current trajectory. Thus this paper aims to clarify the extent design impacts users and how educational buildings can benefit adolescent mental health. Literature analysis from a diverse range of fields guides these conclusions. Additionally, case study analysis and logical argumentation are employed to identify practical solutions. Ultimately, an example design for a mental health conscious public school is purposed.

Connecting Us, Taylor Ford Jan 2021

Connecting Us, Taylor Ford

Architecture Theses

Imagine experiencing multiple different cities and cultures within a single day. In Europe, this is easily accessible, partly because of the close proximity and small scale of countries, but also because of their means of travel. The ease and speed of their train system make traveling between countries almost effortless, so what has prevented the United States from doing so as well? The distance, as the crow flies, from London to Paris is about 212 miles, similar to Fargo to Minneapolis at 207 miles. However, the drive from Fargo approaches four hours, whereas a train ride from London barely breaks …

Redesign To Protect: Constructed Wetlands For Flood Mitigation, Education, And Wildlife Habitat Along The Red River, Alexandra Kotte Jan 2021

Redesign To Protect: Constructed Wetlands For Flood Mitigation, Education, And Wildlife Habitat Along The Red River, Alexandra Kotte

Landscape Architecture Theses

The Red River runs north through the hearts of two densely populated urban cores in North Dakota, Fargo and Grand Forks. In 1997 and 2011, the Red River hit the 50-year floodplain and in 2009 reached the 100-year floodplain. The neighboring cities of Fargo, ND and Moorhead, Minnesota, bordered by the Red River, have currently implemented flood control and protection through dike, levee and wall construction, but has led to a large displacement of residential and agricultural properties within proximity to flood infrastructure. The controversial proposal of the FM diversion has been the only analyzed solution to the inevitable flooding …

Returning To Earth: Natural Design For A Cemetery In Otter Tail County, Mn, Amy Kronbeck Jan 2021

Returning To Earth: Natural Design For A Cemetery In Otter Tail County, Mn, Amy Kronbeck

Landscape Architecture Theses

As awareness of human impact on the environment grows, ethical concerns are raised over the exploitation of natural resources by traditional cemetery design, and burial practices come into question. America’s parks first began within cemeteries where people enjoyed the serene settings of nature in well-designed rural burial landscapes. In the early 19th century, Mount Auburn Cemetery was built in Massachusetts serving as passive recreational and gathering spaces for a wide variety of users and introducing Americans to the value of public green space. People traveled from the congested city to Mount Auburn’s tranquil rural cemetery setting to enjoy walks and …
