Estimating The Effect Of Newly Proposed Transportation Planning Development For Congested Urban Areas In Greater Cairo Case Study: El Fardous Axis, New Cairo., Ahmed Mohamed, Ahmed Hassan, Abd El Zaher Mostafa, Ahmed Abd Elghani
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This research aims at developing a transport model helping in conducting demand predicting for a newly proposed corridor, El Fardous axis, connecting East and downtown Cairo. The transport model is first calibrated and validated for existing traffic conditions and then, it is used to predict the future traffic conditions in the study area, as well as an assessment of the impact of planning data changes, including any proposed development. First, a study area was determined; then, a transport model was developed as a tool for the estimating the demand on the corridor at opening and future modeling years. The data …

Deep And Transfer Learning Approaches For Pedestrian Identification And Classification In Autonomous Vehicles, Alex Mounsey, Asiya Khan, Sanjay Sharma
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Pedestrian detection is at the core of autonomous road vehicle navigation systems as they allow a vehicle to understand where potential hazards lie in the surrounding area and enable it to act in such a way that avoids traffic-accidents, which may result in individuals being harmed. In this work, a review of the convolutional neural networks (CNN) to tackle pedestrian detection is presented. We further present models based on CNN and transfer learning. The CNN model with the VGG-16 architecture is further optimised using the transfer learning approach. This paper demonstrates that the use of image augmentation on training data …
Post-Application Factors Affecting Community College Enrollment, Kyle L. Mccarrell
Post-Application Factors Affecting Community College Enrollment, Kyle L. Mccarrell
Dissertations, 2020-current
For many open-enrolled higher education institutions, including community colleges, enrollment is dropping each semester creating significant financial challenges. While much research literature focuses on four-year colleges, little is known about the students who seek to enroll at community colleges. What is known is often evaluated using college choice theoretical models, e.g., Hossler & Gallagher (1987), that focus on a limited, and often linear, student experience. Contemporary evaluation models, including Perna (2006) and Iloh (2018), seek to expand college choice understanding by incorporating contextual matters that include the diverse experiences of potential students as they consider college. These contextual theories, with …
The Negative Impacts Of Social Media Use On Adolescent Social-Emotional Development, Jill E. Funk
The Negative Impacts Of Social Media Use On Adolescent Social-Emotional Development, Jill E. Funk
Masters Projects
The topic of this project is to inform all caregivers- educators, administration, parents/guardians- including students themselves of the negative impacts social media use can have on the social-emotional development of adolescents. This project involves teenagers also known as “iGen”, their social-emotional development, appropriate use of social media, and digital citizenship. In developed countries where teenagers frequently use social media, there is a great need to be aware of the risks that can result from this usage such as poor body image, self-esteem issues, depressive symptoms, cyberbullying, and sometimes suicidal thoughts. Parents/guardians, teachers, librarians, school counselors, and school administrators who are …
Functional Structure Of Biomacromolecules In Plant Biomass Using Solid-State Nmr And Dynamic Nuclear Polarization, Alex Kipchirchir Kirui
Functional Structure Of Biomacromolecules In Plant Biomass Using Solid-State Nmr And Dynamic Nuclear Polarization, Alex Kipchirchir Kirui
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation summarizes the recent findings on complex biomacromolecules in cell wall of plants and fungi which perform important roles in cell recognition, structural build up, and energy storage. Because of the technical difficulty in characterizing these biomacromolecules, which are often polymorphic and disordered in structure, the functional structure of these biomacromolecules remains elusive. In this dissertation, I present two solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) studies of carbohydrate-rich biosystems: the energy-rich plant biomass and disease-relevant, pathogenic fungi.
First, we have investigated the secondary cell wall of plant biomass which is a carbohydrate-rich biosystem using solid …

The Power Of Outdoor Learning Experiences: A Narrative Inquiry, Vincent M. Case
The Power Of Outdoor Learning Experiences: A Narrative Inquiry, Vincent M. Case
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Outdoor learning experiences offer schools an initial avenue to address global community issues, including climate change, natural resource depletion, disconnection from nature, and the current global coronavirus pandemic. This narrative inquiry study, grounded in the theoretical work of Vygotsky, Cajete, Brody, and Kahn, seeks to understand how children’s perceptions of their outdoor learning experiences provide insights into their learning processes. This study’s findings suggest that regardless of the location (mountains, home, school campuses, local natural areas), students say that they: experience positive affect and enjoyment; observe through their senses to explore, discover, inquire, change their behavior, and build deeper relationships …

Convergence Properties Of Solutions Of A Length-Structured Density-Dependent Model For Fish, Geigh Zollicoffer
Convergence Properties Of Solutions Of A Length-Structured Density-Dependent Model For Fish, Geigh Zollicoffer
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
We numerically study solutions to a length-structured matrix model for fish populations in which the probability that a fish grows into the next length class is a decreasing nonlinear function of the total biomass of the population. We make conjectures about the convergence properties of solutions to this equation, and give numerical simulations which support these conjectures. We also study the distribution of biomass in the different age classes as a function of the total biomass.

Between 1933 and 1940, and continuing through World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt spent billions of dollars through a number of agencies on a variety of relief and recovery measures. Persuading Congress and the American public that mammoth appropriations were necessary to ameliorate the privations suffered by the bottom third of the nation required a constant lobbying and educational effort. To show the needs of the ill-housed, ill-fed, and ill-clothed during the Great Depression, and to record the progress made by the New Deal, a documentary photography project was established in 1935 in the Resettlement Administration (RA), and became …

The Seymour Decision: An Appraisal Of The Olustee Campaign, William N. Nulty
Florida Historical Quarterly
Just before seven A.M. on February 20, 1864, Colonel Guy V. Henry’s mounted brigade, the advance guard of the Union forces commanded by Brigadier General Truman Seymour, departed Barber’s Ford, Florida, heading west on the Lake City and Jacksonville Road. Composed of the Fortieth Massachusetts Mounted Infantry with the First Massachusetts Independent Cavalry attached and Captain Samuel S. Elder’s Horse Battery with four pieces of artillery, the mounted men soon outdistanced those marching in brigade columns. The sky was clear and gold sunlight was just starting to filter down through the pines. In a report written two days later, Seymour …

Conservation And Reutilization Of The Castillo De San Marcos And Fort Matanzas, Luis Rafael Arana
Florida Historical Quarterly
On July 10, 1821, at four o’clock in the afternoon, Spanish gunners in the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine fired a twenty-one gun salute. On the last round they lowered the royal colors and marched out of the fortification, abandoning twenty-five pieces of unserviceable artillery. Passing in front of the line of American soldiers waiting to enter the Castillo, the Spanish soldiers exchanged salutes with the representatives of the new proprietors of the Florida territory. Five days earlier, ruined Fort Matanzas, some twenty kilometers south of St. Augustine at Matanzas Inlet, had been evacuated by its three-man garrison, …

Jacksonville In The Progressive Era: Responses To Urban Growth, James B. Crooks
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the first two decades of the twentieth century, Jacksonville, Florida, became a substantial southern city. Its population more than tripled from 28,428 to 91,558, as it jumped from the nineteenth to the twelfth largest city in the Southeast. Construction, after the great fire of 1901, of skyscrapers, a new city hall, court house, library, high schools, modern department stores, and a palatial railroad station created a cosmopolitan downtown. Expanding suburbs in Riverside, Murray Hill, Springfield, and across the St. Johns River in South Jacksonville provided the physical and social separation of work and home life that characterized cities across …

Brokers, Binders, And Builders: Greater Miami's Boom Of The Mid-1920s, Paul S. George
Florida Historical Quarterly
Six decades have passed since greater Miami and all the rest of Florida were immersed in an orgy of land speculation and a vast array of construction projects referred to as the boom. Miami and its environs were the storm center of the boom, which began to reach fever pitch in 1924. This speculative period crested in the latter part of 1925, when the price of land rose to unheard of heights, and construction commenced on a myriad of ambitious building projects. The boom ended in 1926.
Steamboat Activity In Florida During The Second Seminole Indian War, Edward A. Mueller
Steamboat Activity In Florida During The Second Seminole Indian War, Edward A. Mueller
Florida Historical Quarterly
A significant stimulus to the development of steamboat activity in Florida was the Second Seminole Indian War (1835-1842). The war was a difficult one for the United States to wage. Transportation by water played a key role. The conflict involved a substantial number of steamboats. Because of a lack of roads, they served as logical and logistical answers to military needs. Army facilities located on or near navigable waters, like the St. Johns River and its tributaries, could be supplied by steamboats. With few exceptions steamboats were primarily used for military purposes and usually did not cater to civilians. However, …

Development Of The Plan Of Pensacola During The Colonial Era, 1559-1821, Robert B. Lloyd, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
The plan of present-day Pensacola reflects the influences of such colonial powers as Spain, France, and Great Britain. While all shared a common debt to ancient Roman practices of city design, each culture had its own idea of city planning that developed from its own particular history. The imposition of these ideas on Pensacola, and the accommodations that each culture had to make for the preceding one, led to an interesting and unique plan.

A Great Stirring In The Land: Tallahassee And Leon County In 1860, William Warren Rogers
Florida Historical Quarterly
On the eve of the Civil War Tallahassee and Leon County were the center of Florida’s economic, political, and social life. Tallahasseans read about themselves in their two weekly, and decidedly political, newspapers: the strongly Democratic Floridian and Journal (circulation 1,500) and the Whiggish Florida Sentinel (circulation 1,000). As a national force the Whigs had disintegrated, but the Florida Sentinel retained the party’s principles. Local people kept further informed by talking among themselves. Conversations ranging from philosophical discussions to plain gossip were held on street corners, at stores, at churches, and at meetings of clubs and fraternal orders such as …

"In The Public Interest?" Ed Ball And The Fec Railway War, Burton Altman
Florida Historical Quarterly
Historians describe the Florida East Coast Railway strike of the 1960s as one of the longest labor disputes in United States history. It was also one of the most violent episodes in recent American labor history. Expected to last only a few weeks, it began in January 1963, when 1,640 workers walked out, and did not end until late 1974. The early years of the strike were punctuated by numerous violent acts, particularly derailments and dynamitings of FEC railway freight trains. On October 20, 1963, four diesel locomotives and fifty-two cars piled up just south of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. …

Silence In The Kitchen: How Students Innovated And Created Despite Covid-19., Anna Cruickshank, Pauline Danaher
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
The COVID-19 lockdown has changed the educational landscape forever; everything that we thought we could not do online, it turned out we could. When the Irish Government announced that all third-level educational institutes were to close in March 2020 and that lecturers would move theory-based lectures online, it seemed a daunting challenge. Most lecturing staff had little experience of lecturing with online platforms and no time to prepare the students for new ways of working and attending class. Little did we know that twelve months later, as the crisis raged on, that an even bigger decision had to be grappled …

Dependent Or Independent: Exploring The Culture Of Local Coffee Shops In China, Hui Zhi, Huan Chen
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
Despite the short history of coffee in China, the Chinese coffee market has been expanding and gradually becoming an important overseas market for coffee transnational corporations such as Nestlé and Starbucks since the 1980s. Meanwhile, the number of independent coffee shops owned by individuals in China is inflating in response to the increasing demand of high-quality coffee. The popularity of independent coffee shops reflects a struggle between local and global cultures. Although previous studies about independent coffee shops in other Asian countries and areas, such as Japan and Taiwan, are abundant, no study has yet addressed independent coffee shops in …
