Mixing Temperature, Binder Content, And Dust Content Effects On Stone Matrix Asphalt, Abhinash Subedi

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the effects of mixing temperature, binder content, and dust content on the performance of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Mixes produced at different mixing temperatures and with or without added polymer modified binder (Pb) and/or bag house dust (BHD) were evaluated. Two different types of specimens: laboratory mixed laboratory compacted, and plant mixed laboratory compacted were evaluated by Cantabro Mass Loss (CML) testing in an unaged condition or after a laboratory conditioning protocol (CP) was applied. Additional Pb and BHD were added to plant produced mixes in the laboratory before mixing. Results showed that …

Using A Systemic Skills Model To Build An Effective 21st Century Workforce: Factors That Impact The Ability To Navigate Complex Systems, Morteza Nagahi

Theses and Dissertations

The growth of technology and the proliferation of information made modern complex systems more fragile and vulnerable. As a result, competitive advantage is no longer achieved exclusively through strategic planning but by developing an influential cadre of technical people who can efficiently manage and navigate modern complex systems. The dissertation aims to provide educators, practitioners, and organizations with a model that helps to measure individuals’ systems thinking skills, complex problem solving, personality traits, and the impacting demographic factors such as managerial and work experience, current occupation type, organizational ownership structure, and education level. The intent is to study how these …

Torque Vectoring To Maximize Straight-Line Efficiency In An All-Electric Vehicle With Independent Rear Motor Control, William Blake Brown Dec 2021

Torque Vectoring To Maximize Straight-Line Efficiency In An All-Electric Vehicle With Independent Rear Motor Control, William Blake Brown

Theses and Dissertations

BEVs are a critical pathway towards achieving energy independence and meeting greenhouse and pollutant gas reduction goals in the current and future transportation sector [1]. Automotive manufacturers are increasingly investing in the refinement of electric vehicles as they are becoming an increasingly popular response to the global need for reduced transportation emissions. Therefore, there is a desire to extract the most fuel economy from a vehicle as possible. Some areas that manufacturers spend much effort on include minimizing the vehicle’s mass, body drag coefficient, and drag within the powertrain. When these values are defined or unchangeable, interest is driven to …

The NTh-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology For Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (NTh-Casam-L): I. Mathematical Framework, Dan Gabriel Cacuci Dec 2021

The NTh-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology For Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (NTh-Casam-L): I. Mathematical Framework, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

Faculty Publications

This work presents the mathematical framework of the nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (abbreviated as “nth-CASAM-L”), which is conceived for obtaining the exact expressions of arbitrarily-high-order (nth-order) sensitivities of a generic system response with respect to all of the parameters (including boundary and initial conditions) underlying the respective forward/adjoint systems. Since many of the most important responses for linear systems involve the solutions of both the forward and the adjoint linear models that correspond to the respective physical system, the sensitivity analysis of such responses makes it necessary …

Cross-Platform Methods In Computer Graphics That Boost Experimental Film Making, Yue Zhang

Theses

Computer graphics arts such as animations, video games, and special effects in live-action movies have become essential for people seeking entertainment and education. This study aims to explore the potential for experimental film in presenting scientific theory as well as assessing different production strategies in 3D image creation. To invite people into some abstract or complicated scientific topics more readily, non-narrative film form is a viable method to relay this type of information. It's crucial to look at how independent filmmakers employ various ways to fulfill their particular creative purposes. I’ll be demonstrating how these processes worked in making my …

Is Activation Of Gdnf/Ret Signaling The Answer For Successful Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease? A Discussion Of Data From The Culture Dish To The Clinic, James A. Conway, Edgar R. Kramer Dec 2021

Is Activation Of Gdnf/Ret Signaling The Answer For Successful Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease? A Discussion Of Data From The Culture Dish To The Clinic, James A. Conway, Edgar R. Kramer

Peninsula Medical School

The neurotrophic signaling of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) with its canonical receptor, the receptor tyrosine kinase RET, coupled together with the GDNF family receptor alpha 1 is important for dopaminergic neuron survival and physiology in cell culture experiments and animal models. This prompted the idea to try GDNF/RET signaling as a therapeutic approach to treat Parkinson's disease with the hallmark of dopaminergic cell death in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. Despite several clinical trials with GDNF in Parkinson's disease patients, which mainly focused on optimizing the GDNF delivery technique, benefits were only seen in a few patients. …

Spiritual Struggle And Spiritual Growth Of Bereft College Students In A Christian Evangelical University, Melinda G. Rhodes, Andrea C. Walker Ph.D. Dec 2021

Spiritual Struggle And Spiritual Growth Of Bereft College Students In A Christian Evangelical University, Melinda G. Rhodes, Andrea C. Walker Ph.D.

Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling

This article examines spiritual struggle in bereft Christian evangelical students and how struggle might potentiate spiritual growth. The death loss of a close person can result in shattered assumptions about the world that trigger spiritual questions and struggle and spiritual struggle can be a catalyst for growth. To our knowledge, spiritual growth has not been measured utilizing the actual voices of those struggling with the loss, nor has it been measured in Christian evangelical populations who may find it more threatening to yield to spiritual questioning. The Spirit-centered Change Model guides our conceptualization of spiritual growth from a Christian evangelical …

Rube Burrow, "King Of Outlaws," And His Florida Adventures, William Warren Rogers, Jr. Dec 2021

Rube Burrow, "King Of Outlaws," And His Florida Adventures, William Warren Rogers, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Allen and Martha Burrow named their second son and fourth child Reuben Huston. Born in northwest Alabama’s Lamar County sometime in 1854 or 1855, Rube, as he came to be called, grew up working on the family farm. He loved to hunt and fish, and reportedly had a quick wit about him. Burrow was not enthusiastic about attending school, and, for reasons unknown, about 1874 left for Texas. Besides the legitimate avocation of farming and the less respectable occupation of bartending, Burrow adopted another more dangerous way of making a livelihood-train robbing. When he returned to Alabama late in 1887, …

Florida, "Our Own Italy": James F. B. Marshall's Post-Civil War Letters To Edward Everett Hale, Patricia P. Clark

Florida Historical Quarterly

While touring Florida during the winter of 1867 as agent for the New England Emigrant Aid Company, which hoped to revitalize its pre-war colonizing efforts, James F. B. Marshall regularly corresponded with company officers: Thomas B. Forbush, secretary, and Edward Everett Hale, vice-president. His letters to Forbush were shared with prospective emigrants and used in the secretary’s publication, Florida: The Advantages and Inducements Which It Offers to Immigrants. In writing to Hale, Marshall offered more confidential observations relating to people he contacted, especially politicians, businessmen, government land agents, large property owners, and speculators, in short, anyone who might be able …

Jacksonville As A Nineteenth-Century Railroad Center, Herbert J. Doherty, Jr. Dec 2021

Jacksonville As A Nineteenth-Century Railroad Center, Herbert J. Doherty, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The earliest railroad building in Florida, as in most parts of the United States, was premised upon the idea that the railroads were an adjunct to water transport and that their primary purposes were to connect interior commercial or agricultural centers with seaports or to bridge land barriers between waterways. The notion that railroads alone might connect so as to provide an inland transportation system was not readily grasped by many early businessmen and politicians, most of whose economic horizons were parochially oriented. Indeed, pioneer railroad interests in Florida were so disturbed by the thought that Georgia railroads might drain …

Charlotte Harbor Division Of The Florida Southern Railroad, Vernon E. Peeples Dec 2021

Charlotte Harbor Division Of The Florida Southern Railroad, Vernon E. Peeples

Florida Historical Quarterly

The first railroad to span the Florida peninsula was completed between Fernandina and Cedar Key in 1861. This line aided the development of the coast south of Cedar Key, although the Civil War disrupted service for a time. Coastal vessels called at the small villages and carried products to the railroad terminus where they were transported to the North and/or the Gulf coast. Inhabitants in southwest Florida began agitating for a line down the peninsula after the Civil War, and various settlements in the area competed to become the terminus for such an operation. As early as 1866, Tampa was …

St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, Eugene F. Provenzo, Jr. Dec 2021

St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, Eugene F. Provenzo, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line operated between St. Petersburg and Tampa, Florida, for three months between January 1, 1914, and March 31, 1914. The Line is commonly recognized as the world’s first regularly-scheduled passenger and commercial freight airline. The idea for the airline originated with the Florida engineer and businessman, P. E. Fansler. It was while experimenting with speed boat racing that he became interested in flying as a way of achieving even greater speed. When he heard about the record-breaking long distance flight made by Antony Jannus in a Benoist flying boat between Omaha and New Orleans in the …
