In Fall 2016, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) initiated a study to determine if the Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces Placement, Preparation, and Learning test (ALEKS PPL), given under proctored conditions, can be an effective tool for measuring student preparedness and predicting success in Calculus I while controlling for enrollment and demographic information. The study includes 583 students who took a Calculus I course in Fall 2016, Fall 2017, Spring 2018, Fall 2018, Spring 2019, and Spring 2020 semesters and took a Proctored ALEKS PPL test (PAPL). Spin-dependent properties are the heart of spintronic devices. Spintronics exploits electron’s spin, in addition to charge, to process and store the information. Recently, antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics has emerged as a subfield of spintronics, where an AFM order parameter (the Néel vector) is exploited to control spin-dependent transport properties. Due to being robust against magnetic perturbations, producing no stray fields, and exhibiting ultrafast dynamics, antiferromagnets can serve as promising functional materials for spintronic applications.

AKI is a global healthcare burden associated with high morbidity, mortality, and increasing cost. Currently there are no effective pharmacological treatments available. Apoptosis induced by p53 has been demonstrated as an important pathological mechanism for the development of AKI. Replicative DNA polymerases ε (Polε) and δ (Polδ) achieve high fidelity DNA synthesis through a precise balance of polymerization and exonucleolytic proofreading. Errors that escape proofreading are corrected by DNA mismatch repair (MMR). Ultramutated human cancers with proficient MMR carry alterations in the exonuclease domain of Polε, which were initially predicted to abolish proofreading. However, functional studies in yeast of the most recurrent Polε-P286R variant suggested defects beyond a loss of exonuclease activity. Indeed, biochemical analysis of the yeast Polε-P286R analog revealed increased polymerization capacity in addition to decreased proofreading, which enables efficient mismatch extension and bypass of replication-blocking non-B …

Chlamydia trachomatis is a highly evolved obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen. During infection, organisms reside within a host epithelial cell in a membrane-bound vacuole called the inclusion. The inclusion membrane contains both pathogen and host components, including unique chlamydial type III effector proteins called Incs and host lipids like cholesterol and sphingomyelin. The inclusion membrane serves as the main barrier between the bacteria and the host cytosol, and thus, functions as the platform supporting host-chlamydial interactions. Synthetic biology often relies on the design of genetic circuits, utilizing ‘‘bio parts’’ (modular DNA pieces) to accomplish desired responses to external stimuli. While such designs are usually intuited, detailed here is a computational approach to synthetic biology design and modeling using optimization-based tools named Eukaryotic Genetic Circuit Design and Modeling. These allow for designing and subsequent screening of genetic circuits to increase the chances of in vivo success and contribute to the development of an application development pipeline. Members of the protein kinase C (PKC) family of serine/threonine kinases are involved in regulation of fundamental cellular functions, including proliferation, differentiation, survival, migration, and transformation. Increasing evidence points to anti-proliferative and tumor suppressive role of PKCs. Our laboratory and others have reported that the classical PKC isozyme, PKCαnegatively regulates proliferation and tumorigenesis in the intestinal epithelium. Our laboratory has further determined that PKCα signaling induces a program of cell cycle withdrawal in intestinal epithelial cells that involves downregulation of the pro-proliferative proteins, cyclin D1 and Id1, and upregulation of the cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor, p21^Cip1. Self-determination is accepted as an international right of all people, yet in many cases it still takes decades of struggle to achieve it. Through comparative analysis of the selfdetermination and independence struggles of East Timor and Western Sahara, conclusions can be drawn as to why some former colonies are able to achieve these goals while others do not. Problem: In the span of a nine-month period, the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) in a singular perioperative unit reached 13. SSIs have been linked with negative consequences for both the patient and healthcare system, decreasing quality of life and increasing costs.

Context: The 20-bed post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) primarily serves adult patients in the East Bay Area, where a variety of surgeries including elective and emergent procedures are performed. How counselors should make ethical decisions frequently differs from how counselors actually make ethical decisions, which is often a non-linear process. Social Intuitionist Theory (Haidt, 2003) suggests this process entails a socially influenced intuitive judgment followed by post hoc rationale. The purpose of this study was to examine whether moral dumbfounding, which entails maintaining a moral judgment without supporting reason, occurs with practicing counselors. The results of survey data and open-ended coding showed that 58.5% of counselors were dumbfounded at least once when presented with four moral or ethical vignettes. This article examines the extent to which entire agreement clauses (EACs) and non-reliance clauses (NRCs) are enforceable to preclude actions for negligent pre-contractual misrepresentations. It is argued that courts could improve legal certainty and contractual fairness by adopting two distinct legal rules to be applied, respectively, to contracts between sophisticated parties and in adhesion contracts. First, it is suggested that in contracts between sophisticated parties only specific contractual barriers to actions should provide a complete defence against negligent misrepresentation claims.
