The purpose of this study is to prepare mesoporous carbon/silica (MCS) nanocomposites using natural rubber (NR) as a renewable carbon source. A series of mesoporous nanocomposites based on NR and hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS), prepared via an in situ sol-gel process, were used as precursors, which were then converted into the MCS materials by carbonization. The sulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous carbon/silica (MCS-SO3H) was prepared by direct sulfonation with H2SO4 solution. The silica surface of MCS-SO3H were then grafted by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane to produce the acid–base catalysts (MCS-SO3H-NH2) and used as the solid catalysts in glucose conversion. The aims of this study are to produce and characterize mannanase from the selected Thai Aureobasidium strain and use the enzyme for hydrolysis of spent coffee ground extract (SCGE) to prepare mannooligosaccharide (MOs). The optimum condition for SCGE extraction by hot water was 1:30 solid to liquid ratio with 60 min incubation time at 121°C 15 lbs per in2. The maximum yield was 9.5 g/100 g substrate. The second dominant composition of SCGE was hemicellulose at 28 %. Aureobasidium pullulans NRRL 58524 was selected as the best mannanase producer with 8.07 U/mL. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is currently the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US. Although surgery remains the most effective treatment option, only a few PDACs are resectable at diagnosis. Further, only a few PDAC patients respond to conventional chemotherapy making long-term survival notably challenging. Therefore, the identification of novel therapeutic targets is needed to improve PDAC treatment efficacy. Here, we investigated the role of glutathione S-transferase pi-1 (GSTP1) in PDAC pathogenicity. The relationship between court transfers and punishment differences, as well as changes in recidivism, have been seldomly researched. This paper adds to the body of research by comparing punishments from DUI cases heard in municipal court and DUI cases heard in district court. The differences in recidivism between the defendants whose cases were heard in municipal and district court are also compared. A systematic sample of DUI offenders from Fargo and West Fargo, North Dakota make up the experimental and control groups. North Dakota implemented two pieces of legislation in 2009 and 2013 to reduce property tax burdens. These policies encouraged local school districts to lower their property-tax mill rates and provided intergovernmental grants to school districts to replace the missing revenue. In this study I examine the effect of this change in policy on total school district expenditures. I employ panel econometric methods to analyze the effect that these property tax relief interventions had on county education expenditures in North Dakota. Results from wilt pathogenicity and race evaluations for 25 North Dakota Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. pisi (Fop) isolates conducted in the greenhouse indicated all Fop races exist in North Dakota. Race 2 isolates were more frequently recovered from plants with root rot symptoms. Root rot assays also conducted in the greenhouse demonstrated that most Fop isolates were as aggressive as F. solani and F. avenaceum based on increased root disease severity. The literature review showed very few organization-wide Total Quality Management (TQM) implementations and mixed opinions regarding its compatibility in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Considering the human-centric nature of HEIs this study investigated the interrelationship between the Soft TQM Factors, Faculty Satisfaction, and Student Success. A survey was designed to assess respondents’ perceptions regarding the implementation of Soft TQM Factors and satisfaction among faculty. Analysis of the responses revealed a clear positive relationship between Soft TQM Factors and Faculty Satisfaction. Several efforts have been made to model the degradation behavior of capacitor considering either physics-of-failure models or statistical models and subsequently estimate its reliability and lifetime parameters. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of PCD will fill key knowledge gaps in regard to plant development or resistance mechanisms. Balaam, the non-Israelite who prophesied positively about the Israelites, remains an enigmatic biblical figure, at least in part, because we cannot fully or confidently answer several important questions about him. The account of Balaam in Numbers 22–24 is oddly unique and reads like an independent unit, but it connects in several ways with the content and themes of the rest of the book of Numbers. So, however this account developed and was incorporated into the book of Numbers, it can at least be appreciated as part of the organic whole of the book.

When we read Jesus’s pronouncement in 3 Nephi that “great are the words of Isaiah” (3 Nephi 23:1), prophecies about the Messiah and the scattering and gathering of Israel are what may quickly come to mind. However, the book of Isaiah also contains important passages addressing the treatment of the poor and needy. These passages, which particularly focus on one of the many social ills in ancient Israelite society, range from condemning the unrighteous treatment of the poor to promising how the Lord will (eventually) deliver them.1

Measurement is a fundamental part of accounting. A primary purpose of measurement is to provide more concrete representations of abstract strategic objectives. A potential consequence of using measures to proxy for less-tangible strategic constructs is the tendency for managers to fall prey to surrogation, losing sight of strategic constructs and behaving as though measures are the constructs of interest. We show that surrogation is a nonconscious process. We also extend understanding of the conditions necessary for surrogation to occur by showing that mere awareness of measurement (even absent compensation) is sufficient to induce surrogation. Many question the value of accounting scholarship to society. We compared the attention the general public, policy makers, and academics give to academic accounting research relative to other business disciplines and other more general disciplines (economics, psychology, and other sciences). The results indicate that accounting research receives significantly less attention from the general public than all other disciplines and also performs relatively poorly in receiving policy makers’ attention compared to both economics and finance. Articles in other disciplines’ elite journals cite relatively little of accounting’s elite-level publications, but non-elite journal articles cite accounting research in similar numbers to other disciplines. …

Auditors increasingly employ technologies to improve audit quality. Using a design science approach, we examine whether using drones and automated counting software can improve audit quality and thereby improve financial reporting. We assess three dimensions of audit quality—efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of audit documentation. We provide evidence that auditors can perform inventory counts with these technologies much more efficiently than they can with manual techniques, decreasing count time in our study from 681 hours to 19 hours. At the same time, auditors can maintain or improve audit effectiveness with these technologies, decreasing error rates in our study from 0.15% to …

The Demand For Public Information By Local And Nonlocal Investors: Evidence From Investor-Level Data*, Travis Dyer

I examine the demand for public information by local and nonlocal investors. Using novel data on institutional investors' requests for financial information from the SEC, I document that investors acquire approximately 20% more financial information for their local investments. This pattern holds after controlling for investors’ 13(f) portfolio holdings. I further demonstrate that this pattern is concentrated in stocks eliciting behavioral biases as well as among investors with strong company relationships. Consistent with public information acquisition being more beneficial to local investors, I find that local investors exhibit both enhanced timeliness in acquiring public information and superior portfolio trading decisions …

Quantitative investing relies on stable data generating processes and limited human involvement, which could create lower flexibility in the face of changing economic conditions. In this study, we examine quantitative investors’ ability to navigate a common and material change to the financial data generating process: new accounting standards. We find that returns of quantitative mutual funds temporarily decrease following the implementation of standards that change the definition of key accounting variables. The lower performance we document is relative to more traditional “discretionary” funds that rely heavily on human skill and judgment to make day-to-day investment decisions.
