Rhodopseudomonas palustris CGA009 is a metabolically robust microbe that can utilize lignin breakdown products to produce polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), biopolymers with the potential to replace conventional plastics. Our recent efforts suggest PHA granule formation is a limiting factor for maximum production of the bioplastic poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) by R. palustris. The Phap1 phasin (phaP1) from the PHBproducing model bacterium Cupriavidus necator H16 was expressed in R. palustris with the aim of overproducing PHBV from the lignin breakdown product p-coumarate by fostering smaller and more abundant granules. To investigate the influence of lime content on loess strength and its microscopic mechanism, different proportions of lime were used to improve loess. Through direct shear test, mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy, the strength characteristics and microstructure changes of compacted loess and modified loess with different lime contents were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, and the microscopic mechanism of lime-improved loess was analyzed in depth. The results show that the shear strength parameters of lime-improved loess increases first and then decreases with the increase of lime contents. This research explores three case studies of IMF programs in Tunisia, Jordan and Egypt, and examines how the process of designing and implementing social protection programs has changed after the Arab Spring. The Egyptian case study provides an in- depth analysis of the design of Takaful and Karama in particular and its implementation. Coal and gas outburst induced by mining disturbance is one of the main gas dynamic disasters in coal mine production. In order to systematically explore the evolution characteristics of coal damage and the law of gas seepage under mining disturbance, the whole stress strain–seepage experiment under different gas pressures was carried out. The generalized Hooke's law was modified by considering the effects of gas adsorption and thermal expansion, the plastic deformation-based constitutive relation of coal damage was established, and the piecewise permeability model considering the damage was further constructed. There is currently an unsolved problem in the legal literature regarding the role cost-benefit analysis should play in determinations of breach in negligence cases. Additionally, despite extensive writings, the relationship between duty and breach in negligence cases remains unclear. At the core of the problem lies the inadequacy of our understanding of breach, which, currently established through a number of independent constructs, lacks a fundamental conceptual base. This note analyzes Gore, et al., v. Lee, et al., a case challenging Tennessee's birth control policy which explicitly prohibits trans people born in Tennessee from correcting their gender marker to accurately reflect their gender identity. The note begins with a description of the issues the lawsuit hopes to address and continues with a description of the parties, history of anti-trans birth certificate jurisprudence, an analysis of lawyering strategies, and concludes with First Amendment strategies which may be used to fight state laws requiring trans citizens to complete gender confirming procedures in order to correct their birth certificate gender markers.

n Hernandez v. Mesa, the Supreme Court denied the petitioners the opportunity to seek a Bivens remedy for a constitutional violation by a federal official. The Court appears like it will soon remove Bivens remedies entirely. This article analyzes the case and argues that the Court correctly decided the issue. Current literature decries this decision as ignoring precedent but fails to analyze the framework for deciding Bivens cases fully. The article further adopts the stance of the concurrence to argue that Bivens remedies violate the separation of powers, have failed to achieve their stated purpose, and should be completely abolished. …

Children, a natural consequence of sexual activity, are often negatively affected by the lack of a supportive family structure in single-family households. To correct this, courts often order child support to be paid from one parent to another, usually through the State. This is why paternity determinations are an important court function. Disorderly conduct is usually a misdemeanor statute that criminalizes a broad range of behavior. Law professors have recently called for the abolition of such statutes, arguing that the police are surveilling African American neighborhoods “for signs of disorder” and using the statute “as a means of social control against people of color.”This Article investigates this claim of racist policing by examining a sample of disorderly conduct cases. The sample confirms that African Americans are indeed charged at a disproportionately high rate relative to their percentage of the population. The suite of derived human traits, including enlarged brains, elevated fertility rates, and long developmental periods and life spans, imposes extraordinarily high energetic costs relative to other great apes. How do human subsistence strategies accommodate our expanded energy budgets? We found that relative to other great apes, human hunter-gatherers and subsistence farmers spend more energy but less time on subsistence, acquire substantially more energy per hour, and achieve similar energy efficiencies. These findings revise our understanding of human energetic evolution by indicating that humans afford expanded energy budgets primarily by increasing rates of energy acquisition, not through energy-saving adaptations such …

Glioblastoma (GBM), the most aggressive brain tumor, is associated with a median survival at diagnosis of 16–20 months and limited treatment options. The key hallmark of GBM is altered tumor metabolism and marked increase in the rate of glycolysis. Aerobic glycolysis along with elevated glucose consumption and lactate production supports rapid cell proliferation and GBM growth. In this study, we examined the gene expression profile of metabolic targets in GBM samples from patients with lower grade glioma (LGG) and GBM. We found that gene expression of glycolytic enzymes is up-regulated in GBM samples and significantly associated with an elevated risk …

A non-linear isotropic finite element model of an elastic arterial wall is developed within the ANSYS commercial software package. While progressively increasing complexity of the model, it is validated with analytical theory. Geometric nonlinearity is investigated and an iterative convergence method for the calculation of a solution-dependent axial force, which increases with artery deformation, is presented. Neo-Hookean hyperelastic material models are fitted to existing uniaxial, biaxial, and shear experimental data from literature for both rubber and polyurethane elastomer to introduce material nonlinearity into the arterial wall model. The important questions laid out by the Appeals Chamber in this case highlight the need for the proper delineation and interplay between mental illness and criminal responsibility under international law. Specifically, this case represents a watershed moment for the Appeals Chamber to set a framework for adjudicating mental illness in the context of collectivized child abuse and trauma.
