Industrial Control System Data Resiliency, Daniel A. Bovard Aug 2021

Industrial Control System Data Resiliency, Daniel A. Bovard

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This thesis identifies and fortifies against a critical vulnerability in industrial control system (ICS) security. A properly designed ICS security framework consists of a multi-layered approach starting with heavy fortifications in information technology and ending with control information of operational technology. Currently, ICS security frameworks lack visibility and place blind trust in devices at the lowest level of the control hierarchy. Attaining control data visibility at the lowest level of the control hierarchy is critical to increasing the resiliency of an ICS security posture. This thesis demonstrates how this data can be captured at the lowest level of the control …

Corridors For Coexistence: Evaluating Spatiotemporal Impacts Of Livestock On Wildlife Community Dynamics, Edward Trout Aug 2021

Corridors For Coexistence: Evaluating Spatiotemporal Impacts Of Livestock On Wildlife Community Dynamics, Edward Trout

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Livestock depredation by carnivores is a globally pervasive and detrimental interaction that leads to economic loss and retaliatory killings. Livestock trailed annually on US Rangelands impact wildlife communities- competing with ungulate herbivores for forage, disrupting predator-prey dynamics, and shifting community structures. In order to promote coexistence in these human-wildlife systems, a better understanding of how these processes interact is needed. However, studies on the topic fail to fully capture both the spatial and temporal signals of moving livestock herds.

In this study I investigated the effects of sheep grazing on a wildlife community in the Big Wood River Valley, Idaho. …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The field of technical and professional communication (TPC) is solidly within the social justice turn that encourages TPC practitioners and scholars to consider how their work, if left unchecked, could perpetuate oppressive societal norms, such as racism. Increasing awareness of how technical communicators can combat oppression through coalitional action and through centering multiply marginalized and underrepresented (MMU) voices and experiences through inclusive research methodologies are important components towards equity in TPC. This dissertation presents five accepted publications that demonstrate how narrative methodologies and coalitional work function to enhance scholarly activism and work towards equity. These five publications are thoroughly introduced …

Cannibalism And Synchrony In Seabird Egg-Laying Behavior, Yosia I. Nurhan, Shandelle M. Henson Aug 2021

Cannibalism And Synchrony In Seabird Egg-Laying Behavior, Yosia I. Nurhan, Shandelle M. Henson

Faculty Publications

During years of high sea surface temperature, food resources for glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) are scarce. In response, male gulls cannibalize the eggs of neighbors. When this occurs, female gulls in dense areas of the colony adopt a tactic of egg-laying synchrony, in which they lay eggs synchronously on an every-other-day schedule. Field observations show that the first-laid egg of each clutch is the most likely to be cannibalized. In this paper, we analyzed a discrete-time model of egg-laying behavior that tracks egg order in the nest. Using Jury conditions, we found that the equilibrium destabilizes into a two-cycle as …

Rediscovering Hope: An Empirical Phenomenological Exploration Of The Veteran Peer Support Provider Journey Through Recovery And Beyond, Bobbi Smith

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this empirical phenomenological study was to gain an understanding of the experience of United States military veteran peer support providers. Veterans are an at-risk population when it comes to mental illness, substance use, and suicide. Veterans in recovery for mental illness or substance use can become peer support specialists and use their own recovery as a model to help other struggling veterans. However, providing peer services exposes veteran peer providers to the traumatic stories and suffering of their peers. Per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5, such exposure can cause secondary trauma symptoms in the provider. Person-centered …

Quantum Chemical Investigation Of Novel Noncovalent Interactions Utilizing Vibrational Spectroscopy, Seth Francis Yannacone

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

Theoretical/computational methods have been utilized to investigate a diverse array of questions currently at the forefront of modern chemistry research. The focus of this work is Local Vibrational Mode (LVM) Theory, originally formulated by Konkoli and Cremer, and under continuous development by the CaTcO research group. Derived from LVM theory, local stretching force constants (ka) represent physically meaningful measurements of chem- ical bond strength. Decomposition of normal vibrational modes into LVM contributions, also called characterization of normal modes (CNM), is another powerful manifestation of LVM theory; most notably when applied to the analysis of theoretical/experimental IR/Ra- man spectra. Recent developments …

Multi-Scale And Multi-Group Modeling Techniques Applied To Cholera And Covid-19, Conrad Ratchford Aug 2021

Multi-Scale And Multi-Group Modeling Techniques Applied To Cholera And Covid-19, Conrad Ratchford

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Cholera is an acute intestinal illness caused by infection with the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. The dynamics of the disease transmission are governed by human-human, environment-human, and within-human sub-dynamics. Specifically, the within-host dynamics incorporate virus and immune cell interaction with the vibrios. One model is presented to incorporate all three of these dynamical components. This model is extended to consider the case of a sub-divided population interacting in a spatially heterogeneous environment. In particular, we find that the between-host reproduction number is shaped by the collection of the disease risk factors from all the individual host groups. These multi-patch techniques are …

Localized Bands And Their Effects In The Strongly Correlated D And F Electron Systems: A First Principles Study, Hori Pada Sarker

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Strongly correlated materials such as d and f-electron systems manifest a broad range of interesting phenomena such as metal-insulator transition, high temperature superconductivity, topologically insulating behavior etc. Due to the highly localized nature of d and f-electrons, they are tightly bound about the associated atoms within the crystal lattice and hence strongly interact with intra-site electrons and the corresponding ionic cores. Such a strong localization of electrons results in the creation of polaron quasi-particles in strongly correlated system like BiVO4, a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for H2 fuel generation using solar irradiation. Using first principles density …

Role Of Caspase-8 On Human Retinal Microvasculature Endothelial Cells (Hrmec) Migration In Hyperglycemia, Paola A. Campano

Theses and Dissertations

Pathological angiogenesis is the hallmark of proliferative diabetic retinopathy that results from the advanced stage of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR). In response to prolonged tissue injury, retinal microvascular endothelial cells form new blood vessels to ensure the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the eye; however, progressive fibrovascular proliferation can eventually lead to retinal detachment and blindness. Caspase-8, the responsible protease for apoptosis has also been shown to modulate pathological and developmental angiogenesis but whether it exerts this role in a hyperglycemic environment has not yet been explored. Here we demonstrate that Caspase-8 decreased cell viability and was upregulated in hyperglycemic …

Empirical Bayes Estimates For The Reproduction Number Of Epidemics, Elijah Lee Hight Aug 2021

Empirical Bayes Estimates For The Reproduction Number Of Epidemics, Elijah Lee Hight

Theses and Dissertations

Epidemic outbreaks can be modelled as a branching process in which the total progeny or outbreak size, follows a Borel-Tanner (BT) distribution. Following a procedure described by Liang (2009), we construct empirical Bayes estimates for when the initial number of infected is a specified value r. Following the construction, we then simulate data and perform a numerical study, assuming BT distribution for the parameter θ, the reproduction number, with an initial outbreak size of three. Simulation results indicate that the empirical estimator suffers from “jumpiness.” We then proceed to monotonize the empirical estimate via a method outlined by Houwelingen (1979). …

Theses and Dissertations

The stress axis of the endocrine system allows for animals to respond to environmental stressors in contextually appropriate ways. Elevated levels of the stress hormone corticosterone (CORT) in male songbirds can result in compromised song learning ability. Parrots form a sister group to songbirds, but it is unknown whether CORT affects vocal development in parrots. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of CORT supplements in green-rumped parrotlets (Forpus passerinus), a free-ranging parrot species in Venezuela. Bouts of vocal babbling were extracted from nest box videos and analyzed. CORT supplementation resulted in differences in babbling …

Bioprinting A 3d Tubular Structure With Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells To Observe The Process Compatibility, Taieba Tuba Rahman Aug 2021

Bioprinting A 3d Tubular Structure With Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells To Observe The Process Compatibility, Taieba Tuba Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

Printability is the ability to print a reproducible structure using the bioprinting technique. Constructing the relationships between printability and printing parameters of the extrusion printing process is difficult because of the presence of too many independent and inter-correlated factors. For this reason, it is necessary to identify and limit the number of significantly influential factors. In addition, Scaffold based blood vessel fabrication is a key challenge in 3D Bioprinting. As vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMCs) is a major component of blood vessels, the investigation of the behavior and orientation of VSMCs after printing is required to better understand the 3D …

Theses and Dissertations

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a highly charged long and semi-flexible polymer of which length is much longer than cell dimensions at least by 1,000-folds. A long linear DNA turns into a crumpled structure to fit into a tiny cell volume by the process known as DNA compaction. In nature, DNA fits into the volume of the cell using DNA compaction by packaging genome material. Various types of protein are involved in DNA compaction. To experiment with various proteins as DNA compaction agents, DNA needs to be stretched out. In our thesis, the effect of temperature and buffer viscosity on DNA …
