Silk Fibroin Supraparticles Created By The Evaporation Of Colloidal Ouzo Droplets, Ashley Lamb, Fengjie He, Shengjie Zhai, Hui Zhao
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
Due to its high biocompatibility and biodegradability, supraparticles made from silk fibroin—produced from Bombyx mori (B. mori) cocoons—can find various applications in biomedical fields. The evaporation of Ouzo droplets by not requiring energy nor a surfactant is an environmentally friendly, easy, and cost-effective strategy to fabricate three-dimensional supraparticles, tackling the so-called “coffee ring effect” associated with droplet evaporation. Silk fibroins are dissolved into quaternary droplets, comprised of ultrapure water, ethanol, trans-anethole oil, and formic acid. The Ouzo droplet is able to form an oil ring that facilitates the droplet contraction to create a three-dimensional supraparticle. Using the Ouzo effect to …
Heterogeneity In Multiple Inositol Polyphosphate Phosphatase1 (Minpp1): Identification And Characterization Of An Isoform-2 In Exosomes, Mohd Zubair
Theses and Dissertations
In pursuit of understanding the heterogeneity and physiological significance of multiple inositol polyphosphate phosphatase 1 (Minpp1), we have studied its isoforms for distinct motifs, subcellular distribution, and enzymatic potential. Initially, we took a Bioinformatics & Computational Biology approach exploring the proteome diversity of the Minpp1 utilizing the current NCBI database. We noticed three different minpp1 variants translated into three isoforms of Minpp1 proteins with varying molecular weight. A link between the minpp1 variant-2 gene and ER-stress, using real-time PCR, suggests a functional similarity between minpp1 variant-1 and variant-2. A detailed study on motifs revealed Minpp1 isoform-2 as the only other …

Exploring The Experience Of Anxiety Among Final Year Students At University: A Thematic Analysis, Catriona Keane, Daniel Waldeck, Andrew Holliman, Simon Goodman, Kubra Choudhry
The Qualitative Report
The transition from undergraduate study to a postgraduate career can be an anxiety provoking experience for many students. In this study, we explore the shared experience of five “anxious” undergraduate students as they transition from higher education towards their postgraduate careers. Using a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five female undergraduate students from different courses at a UK university. A thematic analysis revealed two overarching themes: perceived pressure without sufficient support, and concerns about next steps. The findings suggested the final year is emotionally demanding, and students felt as though there was a lack of provision to manage …

Agriculture has adopted the use of smart technology to help meet growing food demands. This increased automation and associated connectivity increases the risk of farms being targeted by cyber-attacks. Increasing frequency of cybersecurity breaches in many industries illustrates the need for securing our food supply chain. The uniqueness of biological data, the complexity of integration across the food and agricultural system, and the importance of this system to the U.S. bioeconomy and public welfare suggests an urgency as well as unique challenges that are not common across all industries. To identify and address the gaps in awareness and knowledge as …

Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis Induced By Cetuximab, Sadia Masood, Mohammad Rizwan, Saira Fatima, Palwasha Jalil
Department of Medicine
A wide variety of diseases and drugs can cause cutaneous pustular eruptions. Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a unique drug-induced dermatosis clinically presented as erythematous papular and pustular eruption, usually caused by certain systemic drugs. We are presenting a very rare association of AGEP with a biological agent, cetuximab. A male aged 66 years, who was recently diagnosed with a case of squamous cell carcinoma of glottis, presented in the dermatology clinic with a recent onset of fever and widespread pustular eruption over the face, trunk, and limbs. The eruption was noted after the injection of cetuximab given for …

Faculty Publications
Scholarly requirements have led to a massive increase of transcriptomic data in the public domain, with millions of samples available for secondary research. We identified gene-expression datasets representing 10,214 breast-cancer patients in public databases. We focused on datasets that included patient metadata on race and/or immunohistochemistry (IHC) profiling of the ER, PR, and HER-2 proteins. This review provides a summary of these datasets and describes findings from 32 research articles associated with the datasets. These studies have helped to elucidate relationships between IHC, race, and/or treatment options, as well as relationships between IHC status and the breast-cancer intrinsic subtypes. We …
Doing Gender And Reshaping The Self: The Rehabilitation Narratives Of Tbi Survivors, Paola Tine
Doing Gender And Reshaping The Self: The Rehabilitation Narratives Of Tbi Survivors, Paola Tine
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
This article provides a review of selected studies conducted in recent years on the relationship between gender identity and recovery following traumatic brain injury (TBI) with the goal of determining whether gender constructions play a role in the lived experience of TBI survivors. The studies reviewed show that psychosocial issues resulting from perceived difficulties in doing gender can be a burden to successful recovery and that addressing these constructions can have a positive influence on long-term results. Consequently, the author argues that gender should be considered a critical element in the aetiology and management of psychosocial issues following the injury …

Gene (Co)Expression Networks And Alternate Transcripts Induced In Cotton In Response To Aspergillus Flavus Infection, Mohit Verma
Gene (Co)Expression Networks And Alternate Transcripts Induced In Cotton In Response To Aspergillus Flavus Infection, Mohit Verma
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L) is an economically important crop that generates billions of dollars in annual revenue worldwide. However, contamination of cottonseed with a highly carcinogenic aflatoxin produced by Aspergillus flavus limits the use of cottonseed in the oil and animal feed industries. Much success has been achieved by the application of atoxigenic strains of A. flavus for controlling aflatoxin contamination in cotton, peanut, and maize. Understanding the gene (co)expression network in response to A. flavus infection with both toxigenic and atoxigenic strains of A. flavus pericarp and seed of cotton through genome-wide transcriptome profiling will not only unravel …

Current State Of Seagrasses In Zanzibar: Impacts Of Coastal Economic Activities And Marine Protected Areas On Seagrass Cover, Danielle Purvis, Narriman Jiddawi
Capstone Collection
Seagrass meadows are located abundantly in Zanzibar, Tanzania and provide essential ecosystem services, such as sediment nutrient enrichment and blue carbon sequestration. However, seagrasses have been less researched or protected than other marine ecosystems. Although environmental variables affect seagrass health, evidence suggests that anthropogenic impacts are their greatest threats. The rapid expansion of seaweed farming and tourism and widespread use of harmful small-scale fishing practices in Zanzibar have contributed to the degradation and removal of seagrass meadows, disrupted coastal marine food chains, and reduced local biodiversity that seagrasses support. Public or private marine protected areas (MPAs) protect most of Zanzibar’s …

Optimization Of Corrugated Bulkhead Forms By Genetic Algorithm, Joe-Ming Yang, Cheng-Neng Hwang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this research, the optimal design of corrugated bulkheads being used in ship structures is explored by means of the state-of-theart genetic algorithms. The influences of genetic parameters, such as population sizes, crossover probability and mutation probability, on the optimal design of corrugated bulkheads are carefully examined. An objective function defined for the cost of materials and labors is to be minimized to attain the least cost of panel production. The obtained optimal values of each design variable must satisfy the predescribed constraints and some restrictions on fabrication. The optimal values of minimum weight and minimum cost of a panel …
