Design And Development Of 2d Functional Semiconductor Nanocrystals, Andrew Hunter Davis Aug 2021

Design And Development Of 2d Functional Semiconductor Nanocrystals, Andrew Hunter Davis

Dissertations - ALL

Anisotropic nanocrystals (NCs) have become of keen interest in recent years, especially for applications in optoelectronic devices due to their directionally oriented emissions, narrow emission spectra, and suitable morphologies for device integration. Of the desired anisotropic NCs, two-dimensional (2D) NCs are of profound interest, due to their impressive optical and electronic properties as well as their prospective advantages towards applications in layered optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells. However, 2D NCs face many challenges, including limited synthetic derivation, as well as decreased stability and optical response, due to their large surface-to-volume ratio and reactive planar surface increasing surface defect state …

How Do Immigrant Older Adults In The United States Fare In Later Life? Examining Differences In Immigrant Status And Life-Course Timing Of Migration On Late-Life Disablement And Mortality, Rebecca Wang

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation focuses on immigrant older adults in the United States and their experiences with late-life disablement. Specifically, this dissertation examines immigrant status differences in late-life disability among immigrants compared to non-immigrants and investigates how life-course timing of immigration shapes late-life disability among immigrant older adults using data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) 2011-2016. Drawing from life course and segmented assimilation theoretical frameworks, this research is guided by two broad research aims: 1) To determine if the immigrant health and mortality advantage extends to late-life disablement, 2) To examine how life-course timing of migration affects late-life …

Background: Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide. There is increasing evidence showing that depression is associated with the pathophysiology in amygdala; however, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood.

Method: We established a rat model of chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) and conducted a series of behavior tests to observe behavioral changes. Then liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics and isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based proteomics were employed to detect metabolomes and proteomes in the amygdala, respectively. Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) and other bioinformatic analyses were used to analyze differentially expressed metabolites and proteins.

Results: The …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Programmed cell death pathways eliminate infected cells and regulate infection-associated inflammation during pathogen invasion. Cytomegaloviruses encode several distinct suppressors that block intrinsic apoptosis, extrinsic apoptosis, and necroptosis, pathways that impact pathogenesis of this ubiquitous herpesvirus. Here, we expanded the understanding of three cell autonomous suppression mechanisms on which murine cytomegalovirus relies: (i) M38.5-encoded viral mitochon-drial inhibitor of apoptosis (vMIA), a BAX suppressor that functions in concert with M41.1-encoded viral inhibitor of BAK oligomerization (vIBO), (ii) M36-encoded viral inhibitor of caspase-8 activation (vICA), and (iii) M45-encoded viral inhibitor of RIP/RHIM activation (vIRA). Following infection of bone marrow-derived macrophages, the virus initially …

The Impact Of Adaptive Learning In Principles Of Microeconomics, Doris S. Bennett, Cynthia S. Mccarty, Michael S. Carter

Southwestern Business Administration Journal

Abstract

The spread of Covid-19, which forced almost all learning to move to online in March, 2020, abruptly increased the number of undergraduates taking at least one online course by approximately 177% between the fall of 2019 and the spring of 2020 (Koksal, 2020; Carey, 2020; National Center for Education Statistics, 2020). Even without the Covid-19 disruption, online education has become increasing prevalent due to the decreasing allocation of resources to higher education and the pressure on college administrators to make a college education effective, affordable, and accessible for more students. Originally online instruction differed from in-class instruction only be …

Painting Outside Of The Lines: How Race Assignment Can Be Rethought Through Art, Giovanni Mella-Velazquez

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

For centuries art has been used to make us think about our own human experiences. Unfortunately, works usually reflect the era which they were painted in; this has led to various artists showing, maintaining, and therefore reinforcing racist thoughts in our cultures. Art can be used to create a new narrative for our race assignments and their meanings. The idea of loving one's roots has been prevalent in many cultures, but in art form a disconnect between history and the everyday experience can arise which could miss the mark in helping us redefine our own race. Therefore, artwork which empowers …

Naturalistic Child Observation, Rachel Bradley

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

Among the many different research methods available naturalistic observation is one of the oldest forms. In this paper advantages and disadvantages of naturalistic observation will be discussed, followed by observations of two preschool children to determine which developmental stage they place in Piaget’s cognitive development theory. The results found that each child fit within Piaget's cognitive development theory with each exhibiting different spheres of the preoperational stage. Further research could look at gender differences or certain behavioral incidences only.

Role Of Microrna In Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Clinical Evidence And The Development Of Preclinical Animal Models., Kanika Suri, Jason A. Bubier, Michael V. Wiles, Leonard D. Shultz, Mansoor M Amiji, Vishnu Hosur

Faculty Research 2021

The dysregulation of microRNA (miRNA) is implicated in cancer, inflammation, cardiovascular disorders, drug resistance, and aging. While most researchers study miRNA's role as a biomarker, for example, to distinguish between various sub-forms or stages of a given disease of interest, research is also ongoing to utilize these small nucleic acids as therapeutics. An example of a common pleiotropic disease that could benefit from miRNA-based therapeutics is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is characterized by chronic inflammation of the small and large intestines. Due to complex interactions between multiple factors in the etiology of IBD, development of therapies that effectively maintain …

While recent research has provided increasing insight into ocean ecosystem functions and rapidly improving predictive ability, it has become clear that for some key processes, including grazing by zooplankton, there simply is no currently available instrumentation to quantify relevant stocks and rates, remotely or in situ. When measurement capacity is lacking, collaborative research between instrument manufacturers and researchers can bring us closer to addressing key knowledge gaps. By necessity, this high risk, high rewards research will require iterative steps from best case scenarios under highly controlled and often artificial laboratory conditions to empirical verification in complex in situ conditions with …

Hematology/Oncology Articles

Primary cilia protrude from the apical surface of many cell types and act as a sensory organelle that regulates diverse biological processes ranging from chemo- and mechanosensation to signaling. Ciliary dysfunction is associated with a wide array of genetic disorders, known as ciliopathies. Polycystic lesions are commonly found in the kidney, liver, and pancreas of ciliopathy patients and mouse models. However, the pathogenesis of the pancreatic phenotype remains poorly understood. Chibby1 (Cby1), a small conserved coiled-coil protein, localizes to the ciliary base and plays a crucial role in ciliogenesis. Here, we report that Cby1-knockout (KO) mice develop severe exocrine pancreatic …

Multi-scale calcium (Ca2+) dynamics, exhibiting wide-ranging temporal kinetics, constitutes a ubiquitous mode of signal transduction. We report a novel endoplasmic-reticulum (ER)-targeted Ca2+ indicator, R-CatchER, which showed superior kinetics in vitro (koff≥2×103 s−1, kon≥7×106 M−1 s−1) and in multiple cell types. R-CatchER captured spatiotemporal ER Ca2+ dynamics in neurons and hotspots at dendritic branchpoints, enabled the first report of ER Ca2+ oscillations mediated by calcium sensing receptors (CaSRs), and revealed ER Ca2+-based functional cooperativity of CaSR. We elucidate the mechanism of R-CatchER and propose a principle to rationally design genetically encoded Ca2+ indicators with a single Ca2+-binding site …

Predicting Infection-Related Organ Failure: Expansion Of Sofa Algorithm To Include Nursing Documentation, Tanna L. Nelson Aug 2021

Predicting Infection-Related Organ Failure: Expansion Of Sofa Algorithm To Include Nursing Documentation, Tanna L. Nelson

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Sepsis, a life-threatening syndrome, is a factor in more than 1.3 million hospitalizations each year and is the single most expensive condition to treat in the U.S. Mortality increases 8% for every hour sepsis goes untreated. Thus, it is crucial for clinicians to detect sepsis early, a significant challenge because no gold standard exists. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential to use nursing assessment findings routinely documented in the electronic health record (EHR) to aid in the early identification of infection-related organ dysfunction. The aims were to identify (a) which specific nursing assessment findings were reliable …
