Effect Of Sowing Time On Phytomass Production During Early Growth Of Two Varieties Of Stylosanthes Guianensis (Aubl.) Sw., M. L.S. Paterniani, T. J. D. Rodrigues, G. T. Pereira, L. R. A. Rodrigues
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this research was to determine the effect of two sowing times on phytomass production of two varieties of Stylosanthes guianensis (var. pauciflora and var. vulgaris). Two experimental periods were studied (1: January - May/1998 and 2: November/1998 - March/1999) using a completely randomized factorial design 2 x 2 x 14 (two periods, two varieties and fourteen ages of evaluation), with four replications. The results showed a difference between the periods concerning the growth and development of Stylosanthes, and that period 2 was the most favourable to this forage plant. There was, also, different adaptability between …

The novel use of ionic liquid as a solvent for biodegradable and natural organic biomaterials has increasingly sparked interest in the biomedical field. As compared to more volatile traditional solvents that rapidly degrade the protein molecular weight, the capability of polysaccharides and proteins to dissolve seamlessly in ionic liquid and form fine and tunable biomaterials after regeneration is the key interest of this study. Here, a blended system consisting of Bombyx Mori silk fibroin protein and a cellulose derivative, cellulose acetate (CA), in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAc) was regenerated and underwent characterization to understand the structure and physical …

AIMS: Sex differences have been consistently identified in cardiac physiology and incidence of cardiac disease. However, the underlying biological causes for the differences remain unclear. We sought to characterize the cardiac non-myocyte cellular landscape in female and male hearts to determine whether cellular proportion of the heart is sex-dependent and whether endocrine factors modulate the cardiac cell proportions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Utilizing high-dimensional flow cytometry and immunofluorescence imaging, we found significant sex-specific differences in cellular composition of the heart in adult and juvenile mice, that develops postnatally. Removal of systemic gonadal hormones by gonadectomy results in rapid sex-specific changes in …

High levels of anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) are often observed prior to a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We undertook a replication study to confirm CpG sites showing evidence of differential methylation in subjects positive vs. negative for ACPA, in a new subset of 112 individuals sampled from the population cohort and biobank CARTaGENE in Quebec, Canada. Targeted custom capture bisulfite sequencing was conducted at approximately 5.3 million CpGs located in regulatory or hypomethylated regions from whole blood; library and protocol improvements had been instituted between the original and this replication study, enabling better coverage and additional identification of differentially …

Rab GTPases are essentially molecular switches. They serve as master regulators in intracellular membrane trafficking from the formation and transport of vesicles at the originating organelle to its fusion to the membrane at the target organelle. Their functions are diversified and each has their specific subcellular location. Their expression may vary significantly in the same cell when the level of protein production is significantly different in different physiologic status. One of the best examples is the transition from fetal to mature status of cells. Expression and localization of Rab GTPases in mature and developing brains have not been well studied. …

Liquid perfluorocarbon-based nanodroplets are stable enough to be used in extravascular imaging, but provide limited contrast enhancement due to their small size, incompressible core, and small acoustic impedance mismatch with biological fluids. Here we show a novel approach to overcoming this limitation by using a heating–cooling cycle, which we will refer to as thermal modulation (TM), to induce echogenicity of otherwise stable but poorly echogenic nanodroplets without triggering a transient phase shift. We apply thermal modulation to high-boiling point tetradecafluorohexane (TDFH) nanodroplets stabilized with a bovine serum albumin (BSA) shell. BSA-TDFH nanodroplets with an average diameter under 300 nanometers showed …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system that shares similar immunopathogenic mechanisms with chronic plaque psoriasis, such as the overexpression of the Th17 pathway. We report the case of a patient with multiple sclerosis and severe chronic plaque psoriasis successfully treated with ixekizumab (anti IL-17A and IL-17A/F monoclonal antibody). The treatment achieved a complete skin clearance (PASI 100 response) with no adverse events or evidence of progression of the neurological disease.

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Simple Summary
Human land use has removed habitats, separated habitats into small and disconnected fragments, and introduced foreign species, which all harm wildlife. South Texas is highly diverse and home to many endangered species, but human disturbance threatens its wildlife. In south Texas, we poorly understand how different aspects of human land use influence wildlife diversity and abundance. We studied this by surveying plants and butterflies in 24 habitat fragments in south Texas that differed in size, shape, type, and land use history. Human disturbance was extensive, and foreign and weedy species were dominant in most habitats. Habitat types had …

Influence Of Water Stress On Protein Concentration In Themeda Triandra Forsk. In A Semi-Arid Climate Of South Africa, I. B. Oosthuizen, Hennie A. Snyman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of four water treatments (T1 = 75-100%, T2 = 50-75%, T3 = 25-50% and T4 = 0-25% of Field Water Capacity) on the concentration of water-soluble protein as growth reserve during three growth stages (vegetative, pipe and reproductive) in three plant parts (roots, stubble and leafs). The water-soluble protein concentration (WSPC) in the plants under the four water treatments differed (P≤0.01) among the plant parts as well as among growth stages (P≤0.05). WSPC in leafs increased (P≤0.01) with increased water stress from T1 to T4 for the pipe growth stage. …

Effects Of Photoperiod, Low Temperature And N Nutrition On Vsp Accumulation In Taproot Of Alfalfa, J. C. Avice, C. Noquet, A. Ourry, J. J. Volenec
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In Medicago sativa L., vegetative storage protein (VSP), specifically accumulated in taproot, are strongly involved in nitrogen storage. How the accumulation of such VSPs is regulated remains largely unknown. Experiments were designed with non-nodulated alfalfa to determine if length of the photoperiod, a decrease of temperature, or high availability of mineral nitrogen may induce the accumulation of VSPs. 15N labelling was used to quantify nitrogen uptake and its further relative translocation within the plant while VSPs accumulation was analysed by ELISA quantification. Results showed that environmental factors such as shortening daylength or low temperature changed biomass allocation within the …

Fructans From Elongating Leaf Bases Are A Source Of Carbon For Regrowth After Defoliation In Lolium Perenne, A. Morvan-Bertrand, J. C. Avice, M. P. Prud'homme
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A detailed study of carbohydrate metabolism in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) during the first 48 h of regrowth showed that the decline in fructan concentration occurred not only in the differentiation zone (30-60 mm from leaf base), but also in the elongation zone of the elongating leaf bases. Unlike other soluble carbohydrates, the net deposition rate of fructose remained positive and even rose during the first day following defoliation. FEH (fructan exohydrolase) activity, which was maximum in the differentiation zone before defoliation, increased in all segments but peaked in the elongation zone after defoliation. Taken all together, these …

The objective of this experiment was to determine the environmental influence on seedling emergence of alfalfa and fescue in mixture. We hypothesized that the temperature and precipitation data could be used to estimate field emergence of alfalfa and fescue. A field trial was carried out at Zavalla, Argentina and consisted of sowing a tall fescue – alfalfa mixture at different seeding date (March, April and June). Relationships between the range of temperature, rainfalls and alfalfa and fescue seedling emergence were described by linear regression models. Patterns of emergence and death of alfalfa and fescue seedling were found in the different …

Preparation Of Meta-Nitrobenzoylhydrazone Ferrocenoylacetone And Synthesis On Its Basis, Zilola Abduraxmonovna Sulaymonova, Bako Bafayevich Umarov Doctor Chemical Science, Professor
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
β-diketone-ferrocenoylacetone was obtained by Claisen condensation. Meta-nitrobenzoylhydrazone of ferrocenoylacetone (H2L) was synthesized by the interaction of meta-nitrobenzoic acid hydrazide with ferrocenoylacetone. On its basis, complexes with copper(II) and nickel(II) ions were synthesized. The obtained compounds were characterized by the methods of elemental analysis, IR-, 1H NMR andelectronic spectroscopy. The research results showed that H2L in solution exists in the form of a tautomeric mixture: hydrazone, α-hydroxyazine, and cyclic 5-hydroxypyrazoline forms. According to the results of IR and 1H NMR spectra, the complexes were assigned a planar-square structure, and in them the doubly deprotonated …

Growth, Maturation, And Weight Status: Insights From A Longitudinal Cohort Of Nebraska Youth, John William Masker
Kinesiology and Sport Sciences Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Pediatric obesity continues to be a major public health concern in the United States, with well-known short-term and long-term consequences. In efforts to combat pediatric obesity and identify children at high-risk for potential health problems, physicians and health professionals widely practice screening and classifying weight status using age-and-sex-specific body mass index (BMI) percentiles. However, some studies suggest the use of BMI for establishing weight status in relation to health risk in youth is problematic, especially during the period of the adolescent growth spurt. More importantly, maturation-related misclassification may result in overestimations of overweight prevalence among early-maturing youth, and underestimations of …
